Title: 1981 ski machine
Post by: Pelican Bay on December 01, 2022, 09:56:59 AM
Tracking a 1981 glastron carlson CVX20 ski machine with Johnson 175 outboard
This boat is supposedly all original which on its own brings some issues for a 41 year old boat
Vinyl and carpet although in reasonable condition definitely showing age ie rips tears and staining
Biggest concern is engine which apparently has at times difficulty developing enough power to get up on plain
Owner I think has been chasing this problem for a while ie carbs rebuilt, new power packs, new plugs and wires
Still has problem he?s saying just needs some adjustment ???
Boat is 15 hours from my location so difficult to put eyes on it.
Wondering what you folks think a fair value would be for a boat like this?
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Original vinyl will be good for patterns of new interior .. But will be very expensive, unless you can do it yourself.
Same with floor, stringer & transom .. Might not be totally rotted but will need rebuild soon ..
Might be a bad mechanic or might be a bad motor, a lot of shops won't even work on older motors.
If flake is good and your looking for a project, sounds good ..
Any pictures of boat or link to ad ?

A person would have to assume the worst with out proper documentation.  As the stringers, tramsom and floors needing replacement.  I am not a outboard guy but same goes there.

If interior is all there like Gregg says good for patterns.

Trailer first thing would be new tires.

Well, price is everything.   Quite a distance to travel, figure that on the cost.   It might be best to find one in better shape, they do exist, and more money paid up front generally means less time fixing and more time enjoying.

So still looking for a value guide ie how much do you think is a fair price for what I have described
Owner thinks it?s a very rare boat hard to find
He?s thinking 10 to 12 K US ??

Depends on if you are a DIY type person and willing to do most if not all the work yourself.   If you plan to farm it all out, and give 10K up front, I'd take a guess you'd have 25k+ in it.    Needs floor, stringers, interior, OB work, and quite possibly finish/gel work, and quite a trip to get it.  I would be hard pressed to offer $1500, maybe more, but no way 10-12K.    For reference I gave $700 for an 85 intimidator that was over 1000 miles away and came with Glastron trailer.    Bottom line, like Jeff said, assume everything is bad price from there

This I would consider a more resonable price, and far less work.   Keep looking

Hear rumors that the Evinrude Ficht Ram Injection system was reason OMC went bankrupted in about 2000, think BRP got them around that time.
Many problems and recalls .. You see ton's of old 3 and V4 OMC for sale, but not many old Ficht motors.
10K to 12K would be a pretty nice boat in MN.

To give you a idea 4yrs ago I paid $3500 for a 1984 intimidator that needed everything. Floor, stringers, tramsom, interior and all new gel. Also sat on factory Glastron aluminum trailer.
The motor was freshened up and ran very well.  Outdrive was resealed.
Depending on who you talk to the intimidator is probably a more sought after.

With distance being a factor in not being able to look it over it is a big guess on price.

Offer any where between $3000 and $5000.  What ever your comfortable with without looking at it.

Where are you located?  I looked through the posting but didn't see where you live or where the subject is at.   Might be some areas of the country where the asking price is fair?
