Evenrude Etec / GTR 160
« on: February 15, 2022, 09:01:49 AM »
Does anyone recall if there was problems with johnson/evenrude etec motors and what years?  Looks like they were acquired by BRP in about 2003?  I am trying to determine if a 2012 115 evenrude etec is a good unit, and what to check on it if buying?

Thanks

No info on problems ..
Check out history of BRP/Rotax, they build a lot of 2 stroke motor.
I would ask your local dealer about part availability in the future.
There were even Rotax motors in Glastron's !

Do an internet search on etec problems. There are a lot of postings. Then you have to separate the problems that should have been avoided by proper maintenance. Local in the Twin Cities people to ask this question to would be Don Larkins at Hannay's, Jerry Sellner, and Ken Durand who is self employed. Below is just one of the articles I called up on the internet.

Chad,

A good Evinrude dealer should be able to answer questions about a specific year and model as David suggested. I have a 2005 Etec 50 on a pontoon and it has been absolutely perfect. Quiet, sips fuel and oil, has always started instantly and I have never had to restart it, ever. It even winterizes itself.

My cousin has a newer 115 Etec on a pontoon, maybe 2017?  It has been perfectly reliable but doesn't have many hours on it. I believe that a dealer can hook up a scan tool and get a readout of how many hours and at what rpm the engine has run.

thank you all, and after some more research, the thing I feared was Ficht, Etec's look okay.

I have heard the Ficht motors had problems, and were main reason they went bankrupt / sold out to BRP.

Supposedly the ETec had more power and the same fuel economy as a 4 stroke. Think there was a video some where.

The CVX-16 we sold last summer.  You will see it pop up from time to time for sale on Minnetonka, with an optimistic price.

Sorry I've been delinquent as other interests have been taking my time, but I work for an E-Tec dealer and have worked on those engines. For the most part they've been pretty reliable and smooth running as long as it's maintained. I have seen problems with the magnets lining the inside edge of the flywheel come loose and either effect the charging system and/or damage the stator. Replacing the flywheel is the only fix and they're very expensive. Those also have what they call an exhaust gate/valve that opens or closes depending on throttle position, the actuator sometimes fails. And on rare occasions some play might develop in the upper crank bearing. You also want to make sure you don't get any water in the fuel system, the injectors don't like it.

On the snowmobiles, the exhaust vales sometime called power values.  have to always run good quality full synthetic oil, and it helps if you take them off and clean them with oven cleaner every few years.  Is this the same?  Has less than 100 hours.  Any way to check those magnets during an inspection?  Is there scan tool info I should ask for before final inspection approval? sorry all the questions, but appreciate you have 1st hand experience.

Without a laptop and the BRP diagnostic software to monitor the system voltage when running the only way to check the flywheel magnets is visually to see if they're out of place. They're supposed to be all equally spaced. However, if the engine has less than 100 hours on it chances are it's fine and there shouldn't be anything wrong with it.
