Emerald 1980 Intimidator restoration project
« on: May 10, 2022, 10:16:44 AM »
Hi guys,

My uncle bought an intimidator in 1988, and I bought it in december after he passed.  Unfortunately he converted it to an outboard motor so the boat is not in its original form.  The engine is a 200hp 1988 yamaha 2 stroke with only 412 hours.  So, what's the project involve?  The floor and bottom are in good shape, no need for a full restoration. The deck isn't soft although there's signs of wear.  Most of all, it needs a new interior and new top gelcoat.  I'm thinking of keeping the original exterior colors, but redoing the interior differently.  Where I'm keeping the boat there is a lot of humidity, so it could take weeks for the carpet to dry.  I'm opting for either finishing the floor in gelcoat with anti-skid or vinyl epa wood simulation flooring, but not sure.  Recommendations welcome.

The engine is finally in working order, I replaced all the electrical parts and she fires right up.  We're at high altitude at 6200ft of altitude, so we lose about 20% of power on the 200 Yamy.  Not sure what prop yet since I my odometer is shot, and I'm not sure it's jetted right for the altitude.  The current prop is a 21-M, but I think it runs out of In any case, I'm uploading the pics as an eye opener.  All suggestions are appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Speedy G  !

I think 1986 was last year for the Timmi's.
Look on right side of stern, under rub rail for the HIN, last four digits are year & month built.
M = model year
XX = year built
X = month built ..  A = Aug. / B = Sept. / C = Oct. / D = Nov. / etc.

Most of the 1980's blue metal flake gel faded to a green over time, check under a cleat or bow light for original color.
Do you want to do original style and color of vinyl ?

Most prop mfg. have a prop calculation chart on there web site.
You could take a test run and see what RPM's your running with the 21 P prop first, it could be right.

Interesting project, converting a Timi into a Sprint.   Hard to grasp the amount of time required to do that.   The splash well is nicely grafted in.    As for exterior finish, if the metalfake is still good, you could spray a gelcoat, maybe with some tint to resto it.   Just plan on sanding a lot.   Removing the carpet and using awl grip or vinyl would prolong the floor since carpet would hold water longer.

Well if you want to go another route.......I have a couple things you may be interested in, three actually.   One is a mold for the intimadator hoods to,  two is an original overhang that would hold the exhaust tips, three is the exhaust exhaust tips.  If your interested let me know.

Thanks for the welcome guys!  I thought about trying to restore the gelcoat but there's bad repairs and also a lot of spiderweb cracks.  Also I'm fine with the current motor so no Timi rear, although I'd love it.  I know if I were to go that way I'd probably end up supercharging the V8 and get into too much trouble.  For now it's a sprint wanna be.  Thanks for the info!!!

OK .. Sept. 1980 would be MF Laser Blue / Blue.
Are you going with original button style seats or something different ?
Tim went with a brown pleated style

For your flooring look up marine decking.  There are a bunch of choices.

Louisiana plate on the trailer, I suspect a gator got the bow?  I suppose that might be a way to restore a Timi converted to OB, but that would be a huge project.  I didn't say impossible, but certain a challenge.

Hi guys,

A few questions regarding Metal Flake.  I've read the metal flake specific posts, but I'm wondering a few things.  First, I'll be using a flake king 1000 gun.  Second, I saw the picture I attached below.  I prefer the blue over the green that my boat has.  The metalflake I'm thinking of using is the following:  https://www.vintagepaint.biz/blue-rhythm-0.025-.025-metal-flake-glitter.html

I'm wondering how much metal flake takes to paint the deck and the sides with this flake?  I saw 2 pounds somewhere...  That sounds like too little.  Anybody have an estimate?  Also how many coats of clear + metal flake?  Finally, what background color, black?

Thanks guys, will keep everyone posted as much as I can.

I am guessing 2lbs would be enough. I did my timi with 2lbs.
I used vintage paints .015 square flake.

Hi guys,

Finally started the restoration.  First week went by, basic disassembly and top sanding.  Boat will be upside down for sanding and painting this next week.  Here's some pics:

Bottom's done!  No structural issues were found.  She's keeping her transom and stringers.

Interior is now being modified. I know it's a sacriledge to modify the interior for more seating, but this Timy was already modified beyond the point of no return.  I need it to hold 8 people and the advantage of an outboard is space in the back.  Also I'm adding two under-seat food storage compartments by adding the lateral seats (24" wide x 18" deep).  The middle of the couch will open up for inspecion of battery, fuel filter/ bildge pump.

More pics next week.

The metal flake looks great with 2 layers.  We're applying dry flake with the Flake King 1000 gun.

Currently we're working on the Interior mods before painting.  As said before we cut out the inboard-ouboard trunk since this is a sprint wanna-be and pushed the bench back.  The middle section of the bench can be removed for access to the bilge pump and battery.  The removable box will be a dual 10" subwoofer box (Polk).  The side benches I'm adding will double as coolers.  The side benches backs will have a cutout  since I'm adding a 6.5" speaker on each side and 2 cup holders.  The side benches turned out to be 27 long, which is a good comfortable number.  Depth is same as rear bench.

The floor is going to be white gelcoat with non-slip pattern, maybe the non-slip will be a different color.  In general, the interior gelcoat will be white and the upholstery also white.  I like the pleated pattern mine has, just not the color or the material.  I don't like the button look.

First, a pic of the interior mods and how they're looking  I love opinions, so let me know what you think.  After that I've enclosed pics that have inspired me.  One has the side bench back cutouts with the speaker and cup holders, another shows the pattern that I like in white.  And last but not least is a more modern Glastron's U shaped rear bench.  Last but not least, I was inspired by other boats that I like, the classic Donzi 16 and 22.

Personally, I like the wraparound look like the first Donzi picture, and I think the U-shaped seating in the back is going to be really cool for having a lot of people.
When I redid our BalHarbor, I decided I hated carpet so I gel coated the floor white. Laurie took one look and said that is just not gonna work. Too hard to keep clean she said, so I added some color and got more of a tan look. It was nice. I used a awlgrip, but I rolled it and that didn?t work very well. I do believe using awlgrip and spraying would give you a nice nonslip texture.

I like the Donzi 22 wrap around rear seat, but I wonder if room exists to do that?  May sound odd but I kinda like more of a bench for the front seats since there isn't much room for the to swivel in my CVZ, maybe the timing is wider?
