Title: GT150 re-rebuild, or ?Take 2?
Post by: thedeuceman on May 10, 2022, 11:48:37 AM
And some of you recall the GT 150 ?our first boat? that I rebuilt in 2013 or 2014 and came back to us last year.
This is to be our small boat for this year.
Saturday I dug the transom in the bad part of the stringer out.

Unfortunately I will be doing the same with v179 and the incomplete CVZ18. I just have to find the time.

Its amazing what we learn from experience over time on how to do things the right way the second time around.  I am starting to believe this is why I completely stopped working on the CVZ several years ago.

I am weighing which way I would like to go composite board or marine grade ply.

Far worse rot than I'd expect to see in that time frame.    How was it sealed last time around, has me worried that we've been doing it wrong all along?   My CVZ resto was only a few years younger, and the Timing was done the same way.    Thinking a composite build, seacast transom might be the way to go?

Mike,

I believe that Joe and I both used a simple cabinet grade plywood on our builds at the time. Joe did the gt150 the year before I did my v179 and I pretty much followed his build on which materials I used. If my memory serves me correct.

That's what scares me most Brandon, my Z and Timi are both done that way.

I have not had a chance to check the transom on the v179 but I can visually see the water wicking up the transom I put in the CVZ18 that is sealed in fiberglass and resin and no key hole cut but the drain drilled out and sealed with resin.

I can say that Marine Grade Ply is now available at most Menards here in Nebraska. The one in Grand Island carries it.

And the cost is pretty much the same as cabinet grade ply.

It will be mix and match ?
Pouring the transom and gussets with arjay 6011, rear half of the stringer will prob be marine ply between 1/2 Composit. Floor will be marine ply. It?s not going to get paint, at least not at this time.

Well I guess I?m committed, I just ordered 8 gallons of arjay 6011 from true Composits. That will be enough to pour the transom three gussets and the stringer as far forward as I cut it out.
I will use 2, 8 foot pieces of 1/2 inch composite, sistered to the old stringer and creating the form for the poured part. Hopefully I will get to grinding and building some forms next week.

Joe, I am curious on what your process will be for making the form for the transom pour?

I plan to roll out a chunk of biax on a table probably on a sheet of poly and just wet it out, so I will end up with a reasonably flat piece. Figure I can cut it to shape with a scissors or a tin snips and then I?ll just tab it in just like a normal stringer or a transom. I?m planning to put sleeves in for motor bolts and drain tubes ahead of time so the ceramic transom material will form around them, and that will also help hold the two sides of the form so it doesn?t bulge out.
This plan may change as I get into it, but I will try and Capture the process. Doug?s friend Ron did this on his CV 16, I believe Doug?s metric is the same but there?s not too much documentation on the process.

I was wondering how they did those boats like they did. That may be the way I go for both of mine. Just have to figure out the keyhole.

The keyhole is pretty easy to plug up, line it with wax paper, milk jug will squeeze into the bottom, then a 5 gallon pail, or more milk jugs & pop bottles, etc...once it all hardens up, you can easily smooth out any rough spots.  Its thick stuff so its not going to just pour out any minor holes.

So anyways, that picture was taken on Laurie?s way to Home Depot to get a new grinder, she picked the heavy duty, Milwaukee model that thing just tears it up. Spent the rest of Thursday night and all day Saturday grinding and got that all cleaned up.

Sunday after checking the damage to the boats in the collapsed building, Jeff helped me pattern and cut everything required to pour the stringer and the transom. I was planning on using some leftover composite material for the front portion of the center stringer, but Jeff convinced me to just use that for all of the forms so everything?s gonna be pretty heavy duty when it?s done.
My original plan was to lay up sheets of biax on a table and cut them and fit them in for the Forms to pour the transom and gussets, as Jeff pointed out it was a lot easier to just cut this composite material and I had it sitting there.

Had to repair these two spots before pouring the transom
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230204/16ca25bd29977c972fdc50caf3537823.jpg)
I made some 1 1/2? spacers out of 1/2? ID carbon fiber tube to hold the form in place, and they will also form the penetrations in the transom for the bolts
I used a piece of PVC pipe for the splash well drain.

Jeff came over today,
Stringers are glued and tabs in .
All of the glass work under the floor is done in epoxy just because I had a lot of it I needed to use up left over from the V249.
Then we tabbed in the splash, well transom and gussets with regular poly resin.
And we poured the stringer with arjay 6011.

this material that i used ARJAY6011 will indeed pour out of small holes, i did not loose much out of the screw holed in the transom i forgot to tape, but i did have a small space i missed at the lower part of one of the gussets that was bleeding quit heavy, duct tape did fix that.

Note the leakage around the screw holes for the pitot and the speedo tube entry

Post by: thedeuceman on February 06, 2023, 01:58:48 PM
so a quick recap
as stated we built all the forms from 7/16 composite material i had left over from the CV16V8
we tabbed all that in, then capped the open spots with biax and poly resin.
the stringer attachment and tabbing that is under the floor was done with epoxy.
i had this material left over from the V249 and i felt using under floor was "low risk" with regards to the fact that Poly resin wont stick to it.
i chose to terminate the stringer at a bulkhead aprox 12" forward from the transom (differing from the original design where the stringer runs to the transom)
the bulkhead is 1" composite and is 1" above the floor so it has more contact with the gussets for strength.
it was quite interesting using this pourable material and i feel like i would use it again, price wise it would be similar to using Coosa Bluewater at retail price, we used a total of 7 1/2 gallons (i purchased 8 gal, cost was aprox $600

Well done!   Nice feeling to know it will never rot again.    I assume its ok to drill into/through it after it has cured to put the pitot back in?

Post by: Rotek on February 06, 2023, 02:36:57 PM
How much heavier is it compared to wood or coosa?
Title: GT150 re-rebuild, or ?Take 2?
Post by: thedeuceman on February 06, 2023, 04:02:31 PM
1 gal = 7.6 lbs, 231CI
0.0329 lbs per CI
1 sq foot of 3/4 is 108 CI
108CI = 3.55 lbs

3/4 4x8 marine ply 70lbs or 2.18 lbs per sq foot

Coosa Bluewater 26 is 1.65 lbs per sq foot

so i guess its kind of heavy, 2x Coosa
that is assuming that my math is correct

I think you can work at just like any other composite materials. supposed to wait two days before drilling or cutting

Added some small flotation boxes in the back, approximately 4 cubic feet. Also built a battery tray and some Gunnell storage so our junk doesn?t fly all over the boat when we jump wakes.
All of this was constructed using quarter inch honeycomb panels

It?s been a couple weeks. Progress is slow.
First order of business with the boat hanging upside down what is the pour form in the Gunwhale area, I managed to get 3 cubic feet in there.
Unfortunately, all the wood that the vinyl was stapled to was rotten and part of the bottom of the dash so I had to fix that first

The piece of corrugated tubing that I zip tied in there to run the wiring through got pushed up by the foam. If I did it again, I think I would epoxy it or glass it, so it wouldn?t move.

Finally made a little more progress. Got some gelcoat on some of the bad spots on the bottom, I?m going to pick up some thing that?s a little closer to the color of the paint and get one or two coats of that over the top of it hopefully tonight, I only got three weeks to get this thing on the water

Disclaimer, this is not really the right way to fix the bottom of the hull, but instead a stopgap measure to keep the raw fiberglass covered up until I get a chance to do a complete paint job.
Sanded the dark gray and applied the light gray all the way down the keel, and patched a couple other spots.

Being satisfied with the results, the boat is now upside, right.

Looks great, can't wait to see it in person.    Good idea using cardboard to form the pour foam.    I've used a DWV thin wall PVC pipe for wiring, it remained straight after the pour foam, I just used a couple dabs of pl 400 to hold it in place.    Time is running out, will the stereo be installed for Rathbun?    Your enclosures look solid, would luv the hear it rocking!

The only thing left to do to get the stereo working to bolt the subwoofer in.
