Added to the collection, 1974 CV 16!
« on: April 28, 2023, 12:44:02 PM »
Really exited to add this 1974 CV 16 to the collection and finally own a "Classic"!  This will join the 1989 Carlson 18CSS.  I'm really curious to feel the difference in ride/performance between the two
I wasn't expecting/needed to obtain another semi project boat but it was in the right place at the right time and I couldn't pass it up!

The little information I have is it came out of West Bend (north of Milwaukee) Wisconsin must of been a estate sale or donation of some sort.  From what I can tell someone really cared for this boat over the years.  Seats looks original to me, along with most of the interior, gauges etc. It is missing one seat base and foam, but they kept the original vinyl wrap!  Not sure what happened there, if the seat base rotted out or was damaged somehow but my plan is to build a new base with foam and use the original wrap for now to complete the interior.  Carpet I am guessing has been replaced.  I need to verify the wiring because it was a little bit of a mess but the main hookups for the battery are there, trim and crank work.  I may have to rewire the gauges, they appear to be original and I really hope they work! Floor seems solid in the main area but there is a rotten section back under the splash well by the drain bowl.  Seems most CV 16s are plagued with this issue.  The gel is in really nice shape and should clean well with a moderate puff and polish.  Transom from what I can tell is solid, no cracks inside or outside.  Passes hammer tap test well and no flex when bouncing on the motor.

Motor is a 77 115hp and they had it running a week before I purchased, hoping to driveway fire this weekend!  Hoping to try and get it wet next weekend!
Green is my favorite on these models and all signs pointed to yes with this thing so I couldn't say no!

I want to enjoy my project that I am just finishing up a couple years. another will come along.

Seat base's are asymmetric so you have a pattern from other seat base.
I don't think seat vinyl is original .. looks different from side panels ..
You'll pay more for the piece of seat foam, then you did for whole boat ..  :o
Flake looks great ..

Yes that's my plan is to copy a base, get some foam and wrap with the vinyl they saved.

I was thinking the vinyl to be original due to the seat markings on the base but I guess anything is possible.
Herse an example where the seat base has "RR" marked on the bottom.  Not sure if this was typical or not.

Another question, the seams are starting to split and obviously stress when someone is sitting on them.  I was thinking of applying some sort of seam glue or liquid stitch to help keep the seams together and last longer.  Anyone found a good product or tried something like that?
Thanks!

Because of the wood blocks used to hold seats to base's .. One side was a little looser then the other side, so I marked the same on my bottoms.
"L F" = left front ..

I soaked them with many applications of Buckeye 2002 / Protectant 303.
Didn't fix splitting but stop the spread .
You could remove the staples from seat bottom and sew up split seams.

EDIT .. OK blew up picture to see splits in seat bottoms .. not sure what to do about that ..

Jason's 1974 CV16SS original vinyl seats.
Your are redone .. BUT .. bet would cost you over $2000 for just the two seats . Maybe $3000 now days ..
Cost $250 for my vinyl seven years ago

Good to know, Ill have to try that stuff out.  I was thinking of trying a "liquid stich" such as this https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/tape-glues-and-adhesives/glues-and-epoxy/1490796?store=16904&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6cKiBhD5ARIsAKXUdyYLs2LnJB94b8v0vNhjTVX45ZZEyGDPcLcujSDJhtsSparblG-xaqgaArSxEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

To see if that would at least help stop the spread for awhile until new seats can be had.  Luckily for the one seat bottom I am missing they kept the vinyl wrap.  So my plan is to replicate a seat base, get some foam and reuse the wrap.

Just an FYI I used that Loctite seam glue and have had impressive results so far.  Not perfect my any means but it has certainty helped and slowed the spread.  They look much nicer as well.  Ill try to get some photos next time I'm with the boat.
