CV21 Winterization (plugs)
« on: October 25, 2024, 01:41:33 PM »
I just purchased a 1973 CV21.  Prior owner says it is winterized.  I am trying verify his winterization.

I have attached a picture of the engine for reference.

I removed the hose from the pump and attached a small shop vac.  I did get a few ounces of water from that.

I removed the rear plug from the exhaust log and attached the shop vac.  No water.  There seems to be four plugs on the log and it seems that the rear plug was different than the rest, so I assume that is the one to remove for winterizing.  Is that right?  Any other plugs to remove on this exhaust or just the one I am pointing to?

I tried to get in to find the plugs on the engine block, but you have to be an acrobat!  I sent my phone down there and snapped a few pictures.
In the port picture you can see the starter to the rear and the motor mount in front of that.  Above the motor mount is what looks to be a hole for a plug.  Is that the right one?  Is that the only one on this side?
In the starboard picture, you can see the motor mount and to the front of that is what looks to be a hole for a plug.  I thought the plugs were in the rear of the motor.  Is this the right plug, and is it the only one on this side of the block?

From chilly North Dakota, thanks for all your help,
Jeff

Yea, prior owner gave me the Berkley owners engine manual.  But #4 is where I am stuck.  Trying to make sure of plug locations on the engine block.

Bonus question of whatzit.  Owner gave me this piece.  Some kind of pressure or temperature relief.  I can see a spring in the brass part.  The knurled part of brass can screw in and out to adjust that spring.

The plugs in the exhaust manifold you removed in pict.3 are to get to the manifold
mounting allen head bolts,no water there. The drain plug is in the bottom of the riser
marked white in my picture 1 . Dont forget to drain the oil cooler if you have one.
Your last pict is of a pressure release valve to limt water pressure in the engine.
Not needed in your application with the open factory manifolds. Used more for over the transom
 water regulated  exhaust.

The relief valve works like the one on a hot water heater tank, most are adjustable.
