New gauges installed!
« on: July 15, 2010, 05:35:34 PM »
I got the new speedometer in from Joe at Ferguson-Poole Marine in yesterday to match my new tach, I think it looks good.  (I know the "purists" won't approve, but I'm doing it the way I want it.)   ;)
If anyone is looking for an Airguide set, the tach was reading high but the speedo worked perfectly,  send me a message.  We'll make a very reasonable deal!

Looks nice Mark. I see that you also have a water pressure qauge. That is quite a feat to install given the plumbing to the outboard's water jacket. Is 45 MPH high enough for your 115 HP Johnson? Nothing like instruments that are accurate and read plainly. I know how difficult it is to install instruments and appreciate the finished product. Joe Poole is great at tracking down old Glastron and Quicksilver parts. He found a Quicksilver square faced speedometer that was original to my 1971 boat.

The tachometer you mentioned might be taken was a possibiltiy for a Glastron member, but he has a different brand name of gauges, Aqua Meter.

Installing the water press. gauge wasn't really that bad once I figured out where to drill and tap for the sender.  It ended up going into the junction (thermostat housing) the two water hoses come to on the exhaust housing.  I'm kind of a fanatic about keeping up with what's going on with the motor.  Right now I'm topping out at 40 MPH, so this speedo should be fine.  I plan on getting a stainless prop later on when I can afford it, but still should be "on the chart" as they say.

Me too, plus now they light up at night which is nice.  (Not that I do that much nightime boating, but it's nice to know you can still see the gauges.)

I know, you don't believe in gauges Doug, distracting I believe you called them.  Different strokes for different folks.  Be nice, or I'll drive down there and put a "Save the Manatee's" sticker on your boat!   ;D

Heh heh heh. Weren't me Mark, Granpappy Jack said it. I'm just carryin on family tradition. He detested 'radios' as well. Always ordered his Chryslers "radio delete". Not kidding!

Edit: For what it's worth your set up looks great. WP gauge is a nice touch.

Doug you have a tach ... You just don't believe in "Red Lines".

Mark
I have my tach turned so 6000 rpm's is at the 12:00 position, easier to see the 5500 rpm's I turning with this prop.
I have to figure out a good place to mount the GPS now ...

I hear ya buddy, and I do respect that no doubt!  (You know I would never deface your fine watercraft with a sticker, right!?)  I've "toyed" with the radio idea, but think I'll just leave it out of the equation.  One of the main reasons I love cruising around in my boat is the solitude (translates to peace and quiet), and besides, my Johnson sings a beautiful tune to me.

I wasn't sure I would like the redline on there, but after running it a little I'm glad it's there.  We used to turn them like you're talking about back in my hotrod days, it does make it easier to keep up with when you're "hammerin'"!  I had a voltmeter in the hole where the WP gauge is now, had to move it to an underdash bracket off to the starboard side.  I just couldn't bring myself to putting another hole in my dash!

My dash is at a weird angle which makes it hard to see tach from seated/driving position.
I trim until rpm's hit about 5500 then check gps for speed and trim in or out till max speed is reached.
Takes three hands to do it ...LOL

I've got a water pressure gauge, just have to mount it ...
Also have a bulge pump, just have to mount it ...
But first have to check on grease stains on right inner wheel of trailer ... Bad seal ?
Always something with old boats ...

Probably a bad seal. Both of my are COATED with grease on the inside. I havent worried about it too much since I usually only go a few miles but now that you guys are dragging me all over the state, I am going to have to pay more attention that that stuff. I did replace one entire hub thingy from Northern. Comes with new bearings and everything.

BTW
Mark those gauges look like they belong there. Nice fit.
I installed a water pressure gauge on my old 50 merc and it was a tight fit. Had to tee into a line and it was tricky to get the cowling back on. I pulled it when I sold that motor but havent installed it.
