SOLD ... 1976 CV16 ... SOLD
« on: September 10, 2023, 06:13:49 PM »
Talked to cousin today .. He said the transom snapped ( ? ) on the CV16 and he's thinking about parting it out and taking hull to dump.
Anyone need parts ?
He's by the Phalen / East side area.

To start with, sorry to hear that Gregg. Can't be fixed I guess?

I am trying to put together my 74 CV-16... my original dash was busted up pretty bad, but we repaired it... it is OK, and painted. If your dash and gauges are good, I would be interested in those primarily. I think my steering and helm are good.

Thanks, Mark

I haven't seen the boat in over two years .. so not sure of condition.
He said the whole transom let loose ?
I had replaced it and it was solid .. I thought ?

Rivits would have to be drilled for removal ...
I'll talk to him tomorrow

Can't see from the pics, but is the "Jetson" style stern light available?

Same as one you could buy at Walmart.

I'm saddened by the thought that such a beautiful boat has deteriorated so far that the only option is scrapping?  Is he keeping the outboard?

Hello!

I have been following the rebuild form of this boat by "theduceman" but just came across this.  Towards the beginning you say the "transom let loose" was there visible cracking or what happened?  Was the boat taking on water? Just curious on the failure mode.  Maybe that Mariner was just too strong! haha
Glad to hear it will be back on the water soon!

Okay, but was there a visible crack on the outside of the transom or how did he know it was bad?  Motor moving?

The transom was flexing quite a bit, you know the test where you have the trailer hooked to a car and you pushed down on the lower unit when the motor is tilted up, there was probably a inch of flex, you can see a couple small cracks on the top of the transom in the rebuild thread pictures Those were there from the first time the transom was replaced, but they got pretty wide when you push down on the motor. PO had it out on the water like that. He said it was pretty scary.

First transom ...
There was no rot on top of the transom, it was on left side were water got behind faired out hull and transom wood.
Also where screws to hold pilot tube for speedo had let water in and rotted wood down and over to drain hole.
You can see the white line on transom (red arrows) .. wood was rotted and screw driver went right through.
The cracks in deck under trim pieces were from stress at rivet holes .. transom was not flexing even with stand and jump on motor test.
