Title: Tell me about how you removed your cap
Post by: melinprov on January 24, 2018, 10:11:10 AM
I'm getting ready to remove my cap  ( on a 1973 V 179 ) , does anyone have any pictures and advise? How do you insure its integrity for re installation. I plan to do body work and filling on it when it is removed-or should I wait until it is whole again with the bottom?

I removed windshield then rub rail and screws holding deck to hull, flipped deck and set it on packing blankets to grind out resin plate on splash well. I replaced transom and rear two feet of floor and bilge well. Half's were only separated for eight hours so wasn't worried about hull spreading.  Others have lifted deck and left suspended from garage ... Or removed and set on a trailer (snowmobile) ...
Some have screwed two by fours between hull so it wouldn't bow out, other used ratchet straps to hold shape.
Other build cradles to support hull shape.
If possible replace stringers / floor before removing deck.

Shawn built a frame attached to stringers so he could flip and work on bottom of hull.

Lots of ways to accomplish removing the cap. Pull the windshields, use the tie down points and rails to provide lifting points.  Friends, engine lifts, crane, hoist, or equivalent.  Really not too heavy, four people can easily lift it off if you provide something to hang onto.  I would fix the edge of the cap off the hull, but wait until reattached to work other imperfections.   Seams like always something needs touched up after wrestling it back on.

Two by four's for keeping hulls shape

Shawn's frame / stand for working on hull's bottom.
The day he flipped it ... 23's are BIG hulls !

Great Ideas! How do you fix the 2x4s--before removing the cap or after-do you measure before? and the same with the ratchet straps? I originally wanted to lift the cap to get to the flotation boxes as well as some loose d rings and filler on spider cracks and other work. I think it looks easier ( with my boat ) to do the stringers first while the cap is still attached and then lift the cap and do the rest. I have already removed the window, engine, drive and rub rail and screws and rub rail frame but the back end is still solid and attached--will that be OK if I proceed to the stringers and deck or should I build some more support. I was going to build a cradle support on the frame but I just found out today while under the boat that I have a different hull than the one I was going to use  for the plans for a support on the trailer. I am also thinking it would be a good idea to put a support up front on the hull / bow. In the picture with the foam boards are those being used as a template? I also like the frame in the boat which is then flipped, I do have some minor repairs underneath as well as painting planned for the underside. I also just readjusted the bunks and rollers and it is pretty solid on the trailer right now

Nice trailer! I am currently rebuilding an identical trailer (except its single axle) to put under my V-179, except I am converting to full bunks so the keel isn't resting on the rollers.

The only thing I would add for support is a couple boards on each side of the keel to take the weight off of the keel. Other wise it looks pretty good.

I would imagine leaving the cap on to do the stringers would help to keep the hull in alignment.   You could add  2x6's temporarily for additional hull support if you think it is needed, certainly would not hurt.    Some bottle jacks, floor jacks or blocks underneath to support the temp 2x6's?  As for the trailer keel rollers, I guess I've always been under the impression they are for use when loading and unloading, but generally not in contact with the keel when fully up against the bow stop.  Looks like your making fair progress.

Would be best when pulling deck to put in two by four or straps in as soon as possible.
Yes .. Foam boards are templates.

Mike, every 179 and 178 I have seen on the trailer is sitting on the keel rollers with just vertical bunks holding the rear outer section of the hull like this one is. must be the fact that the aqualift 2 hulls have more rigidity to them.

all right I am going forward then--- to remove the deck and maybe the stringers...its too cold to glass right now,I'm in the corner of Utah next to Idaho and WY and live in a mountain town 1 mile high. I think I will add a little more support just in case and   75 Starflight  my trailer is a Dilley trailer out of Texas> I have some plans for rebuilding it also but it seems fairly good as is, its hard to get under the bottom though because the axles are so close to the ground.

I cut out and ground wood & glass on mine, in MN over the winter, unheated garage, would work an hour or two.
By spring it was ready to pull deck and start glassing.
Plan to have more rot then expected ...

It is a lot nicer to grind when its colder. That way when you are all bundled up to protect from the dust you don't get so warm.

Ba Ha Ha...I look like the Michelin Man when I'm working on mine, but I wont go out in the garage if its below 20 degrees!

Hyperacme...you are so right! I went out to start the easy places on the deck and hit my first stringer cross brace--I knew it would be bad because of the deck ( about midship ) but sheez. I still have hopes for some solid pieces forward because the deck is solid about 6 inches from here, this is also the one that had the rolled fiberglass. I also found a red putty knife below the deck. Hmm. I measured this and logged it into a book I'm keeping and will put the top brace in a protected corner of the garage for now.

and this is full of metal staples too and some kind of tacks?

Those tacks are from when it was attached to the edge of the floor during the building process. My 179 did not have these along the gunnels, so I did not install them when I put the new floor in mine. On a side note, I do not have any floor flexing along the gunnels after 5 years.

so I started on the rest of the deck today and pulled out the foam and removed the last cleat, the stringers are a mix of dry and wet and although some water was in there--there was more gas than water-- I still need to get the gas tank out so I'm going to let it dry out awhile before doing that and cutting out the stringers and making new ones, it was a great day to do it--we went up to 51 degrees today--very rare here. I was able to keep about 1/2 my foam ( if I want to use it for anything ) but here's the bad stuff

Great work so far! To give you a lesson I learned on removing the gas tank during demo, remove the kick boards And the boards on both sides of the tank. It will be much easier to disconnect the hoses.

so I let it sit for a week and today we had sunshine so I put it outside to dry more and to put in some "helper" bracing. I thought it was pretty solid before ..but now its like its sitting on the ground...it does not move at all. I put in temporary bracing up front and on the sides and under the sides- I still have to get a few bigger and better c clamps and so I used my wood clamps for now. Its simple but it works. I used a level front and back
