CVX 20 from Michigan
« on: June 28, 2019, 02:25:01 PM »
Hello guys!

I ended up buying a 76 CVX 20 from northern Michigan a few weeks ago. My wife and I just moved to the west side of Michigan from the Metro Detroit area, a nice change of pace. We both enjoy the 70's style of the C/Gs and really excited to enjoy the boat. It was kept indoors for some years and the fiberglass seems really solid. The engine/jet drive seem a bit tired tho. I replaced the carb and ignition system and she still won't hit over 40 on a good day. She smokes some oil and runs a little rough so I think a rebuild is in my near future. I am hoping it's last a month or two so we can enjoy our short summer! I probably should do a compression test and see where it's at but I am almost sure I have a bad piston or a valve issue. My vacuum gauge bounced around a lot when I was trying to set the carb up. Either way, at least the boat looks good haha!

Welcome! That is one good looking CVX20. And it doesn't look like it came with a windshield from the factory?

Welcome to the forum Rsthurin !
What a cool score !
I was wondering if it sold .. and why it took so long to sell ..
40 plus years and .. No windshield, cleats or navigation light .. WOW !
Vinyl is original or done like original in quilted pattern.

Please , PLEASE don't put a wake board tower on it !

Thanks Hyperacme! Yeah, the styling will stay as is, no tower. We will refresh the vinyl this winter but in the exact same style, same color.

Id like to start pricing out a long block, anyone know where would be a good place to get one near MI?

I am a bit late to this thread. Very nice to see a boat in as close to original condition as can be.

Motor, I fully expect you have nothing more than stuck rings. It is possible there could have been some rust in the cylinders but if it started up easily probably just stuck rings that are not sealing.
many times they can be freed up with solvents.
But it may be best to pull the heads off and take a look. I have worked on a number of engines that simply pulling the pistons out of the bore, freeing the rings up, replace if you chose since we have far better ring choices today. Clean the bores with minimal metal removal and put it back together.
Your simple route could well be to buy a rebuilt engine but that in no way means it is better than what you already own.
The rebuilt engine will not come with the proper camshaft or even the quality of parts that were originally in the hull.
Most reman engines will have low end pistons and rings which are appropriate for loafing down a road but might not be what is needed in a boat running on plane.
And yes you can get a custom built engine, again it might not be better than freshening what you have.
Regards,
Charlie

Way cool rig, congrats!   Your boat is in fantastic condition.

I also own a '76 CVX-20, 455, but in Orange. It also didn't come from factory with a windshield, lights, ski pylon, hand rails, center console, etc., like the later ones did. They built them very simply first year in production... all beautiful hull and motor!!!!  :)  I kind of like it that way.... nice to see yours kept like that.  My boat was modified somewhere along the way with a windshield.  I had to reset it & re-drill the holes as they mounted it leaning down/backwards too much IMHO. If it wasn't for that I would have kept ours original like yours, but did add lights later on.

The interior of your boat looks pretty good, nothing beats original if you can save it... is it not pliable any longer, torn or faded?  Looks pretty good in the pics!
