Speed from 130 Volvo in 1974 V-174
« on: March 19, 2014, 03:10:29 PM »
Hello and thanks for all the posted info.I am a first time user on any owners site so please beAR WITH me.We have had many boats 8'-39' but the small ones have been the best fun. Just perchaced a 1974 V-174 / aq130 with trailor for a great deal. Have not launched ityet ( Too COLD ) but she runs great. My Question : For top speed only what prop size ( Not S.S ) would you guy's recomend ? I have a 14x13, 14.5x16 . Would a 14x21 or 23 aluminum be too much for the 4 cyl. motor ? Boat will only have on light seat for the speed run. Thanks for your recomindations if any. Regards Chris, Boston, Mass.

Chris Welcome.

I own the tri-haul verson for the 174 with a mercruiser 120. I run a 21 pitch prop with no problem.
Also, please post some pics if you could.

Best bet is to try the different props to see which one gives you the best speed vs. engine rpm. You'll want to prop the boat to have a maximum rpm of around 4500. I think a 23 pitch prop may end up being too big and you won't reach top rpm and the engine will strain to hold speed, take-off acceleration will also suffer. The larger the pitch, the less rpm you will reach.

Thanks for the welcome and sujestions. I'll get some pix togeather . Your video guy is great. That GT deck cam was pretty steady. I'll get some forward facing and outlooking transom wake movies this summer. Looking forward to an early launch.  Going to explore your site further. Congrat's on your group effort.
