Wheel bearing info needed asap
« on: August 17, 2011, 08:04:25 PM »
Is there such a thing as a "standard" size for trailer wheel bearings/axel sizes? I'd like to pick up some spare parts before the Red Wing trip.
What would be needed?
Inside and outside bearings and a rear seal?
Can the entire axels be changed fairly easy? Mine seems to be a bit scored.
Thanks
Ross

There are a few sizes available for wheel bearings that come in complete kits for most wheel hubs. There are 1 inch diameter for both bearings, 1 1/16ths inch sets for both bearings, and a set that has a 1 1/16th bearing for the outer and a 1 3/8ths bearing for the inner. See the link below:

Changing an axel is a bit more difficult as some lengths are not often made by trailer companies so it may need to be custom made to fit your trailer. I had a custom axel and springs made for my old Cox trailer about 15 years ago. It came with new wheel hubs too and back then cost me about $450. Usually when providing specs to a trailer shop you have to give them the length between the spring centers, the point at which the spring mounts to the axel. Also you need to provide the distance between the mounting face of the hubs to determine the proper place the wheels will sit within the fenders.

I had it all apart tonight and thought about leaving it apart and taking the hub and bearings with me, but I have to pack for Red Wing after work tomorrow so I greased it all up and put it back together. Its probably fine but when I pulled the hub, the rear bearing and seal stayed on the axel and I had to strong arm the nut off the entire way so its messed up.
I have a spare hub but with out seal and bearings but I dont imagine a shop could tell me what bearings I need based on that. I am sure I'd need the axel dia. and I am out of time to tear back into it. This is what I get for procrastinating. If I hadnt of looked at it, I probably wouldnt be worrying about it now  :(
I think the only way is to tear it apart again. I looked at the tag on the trailer for gross weight etc but all is there are the headings "gross weight wheel/tire size etc and the type has faded to invisible.
I knew there would be 2 or 3 variables at least and I thought maybe I'd grab a couple of different sizes.
I think I can clean up the axel with some emery cloth but the threads are kinda tough and I dont have a die that big.
Thanks Rich

OK yes I'll have a jack, tools, grease and probably bring my spare hub minus seal and bearings.
It should be ok....I hope.
Thanks
