...a regulator regulates the voltage and a rectifier only changes the voltage from DC to AC if I remember correctly.

AC to DC.

My 77 Merc 115 ran like crap on Tuesday when I took the boat to Oshkosh to watch EAA planes flying over Lake Winnebago.  Been noticing some carb problems for about a month now.  Carbs were rebuilt about 12 years ago so it's time to do it again.  Hopefully 3 carb rebuild kits will arrive at my local Merc dealer today so I can (with the help of a retired auto mechanic) get it done before the weekend.

When was the last time a compression test was performed? Wouldn't be a bad idea to do a spark and compression test befor you do a carb overhaul, would be worthless to go through them and then find out that one cylinder is low.

Good idea.  It's probably been 10 years since I had a compression check.  The carb rebuild kits didn't come in today anyway.  Merc dealer says they will be here tomorrow so I'll do compression and spark tests before working on the carbs.

Been busy working on my '77 1150 lately.  New fuel pump, rebuilt carbs, new distributor cap and rotor, new upper and lower bearings in distributor.  All 6 cylinders passed compression test.  Replacing the rotor was a pain.  Had to remove flywheel.  The rotor and shaft is one part.   When I removed the old rotor shaft, I found the upper and lower bearings didn't look good so I replaced them.  Couldn't get cap and rotor from Merc anymore so had to go aftermarket.  Got bearings from Merc dealer, but was informed that they will soon be discontinued.  Motor runs great now.
