Want to replace bunks and fender carpet at home
« on: October 28, 2019, 02:48:28 PM »
Ok, I don't have a place close enough to put boat in water and then do the bunks and the carpet on the side of the fenders. I have the ocean, but would rather not put in saltwater.

Anyone have suggestions for raising the boat at home and doing the bunks? Where would I lift/support the boat from?

Boat is a 1979 CVX 16 SS with the original vanson steel trailer.

Thanks again.

It all depends on what you have handy.   I use an automotive lift with two straps under the hull.   Some have used cherry pickers, chain lifts, forklift, bobcats, even seen them lifted off trailers from heavy tree branches.   Have some soft materials like foam to set it down.  Really only has to be high enough to sneak trailer out from under boat.    Just be safe, never move or work under a suspended load.  Good luck.

Here is what I did. Really not that hard especially on a smaller boat.

I used a cherry picker and set the boat on styrofoam blocks used to stack small trailers for transport. I got them from Tractor Supply as they usually just throw them out.

For all us rednecks... I used the front yard.. just pull them off the trailer onto the grass. No big deal a couple old tires under the transom so the motor doesn’t dig into the grass and your done. Just use the winch and back under it when the trailer is finished.

You don't actually need to take the boat completely off the trailer do you? If it's only the carpet you want to replace then just jack up the rear on the bottom of the transom, throw a couple board under the outer bunks, and pull the inner bunks off to replace, then vice versa for the outer.
If there is a bulk head at the front put the jack under it for support, but really the front of the boats are light enough I wouldn't worry too much
Good luck!

All of this is solid info.

However, nes-cv23 I think Ill pass on the "just pull them off the trailer onto the grass" only because I don't want to mess up my sprinkler lines.
