Happy fathers day to all you dads/cool dad boating stories
« on: June 14, 2019, 10:10:23 AM »
Hey all you dads, happy Father's Day this weekend!!

Do you have any awesome stories you'd like to share about boating with your dad?

Our family has properry up on the Lac Du Flambeau chain of lakes up in Northern WI. When I was a kid, we would go up there in the summer time and it was always a blast.

Of course, we had a power boat and did all the fun stuff that goes along with that... but my favorite part was kayaking with my dad. We would paddle through the flowage to a small, secluded nland lake, pulling the 2-man kayak over beaver dams as we went.

Its a journey I took my own kids on when they were old enough!

Good thread.

I went with my dad when we bought a 12 foot shallow draft fishing boat with a new 6hp Johnson.  I think I was happier than my dad, not by much though. I’m guessing I was 10 at the time.

Fished for sunfish and northern pike mostly.  Needless to say it opened a whole new world for this farm kid.

As a kindergardener, in our family's 14 ft Larson runabout with a 33 Johnson, I would ride curled up under the bow listening to water splash around the hull. I loved the boat but was afraid of the propeller.   My dad wanted to show me how to ski, but I wouldn't go behind the boat because of that propeller, so my Dad put me in the ski's, and with a little help from Mom to get me up, he ran down the beach pulling the rope, pulling me skiing down the shore in the shallows.

After that, it was so much fun I lost all fear of the Propeller, and would water ski all over the lake behind that little Larson, beginning a lifetime of skiing fun.

Thanks Dad!

Good stories!   8)

My first boat was a 14' tin can with a 25hp Johnson, so I can relate to both stories. My family outgrew it and now we have a real boat with seats and a swim ladder lol

Thanks for sharing and happy Father's Day again, all you Dads!!

My Dad and his Family came from Holland and almost always had a boat. I have this picture of my Father with his brothers on a lake with their sailboat. Later in America Dad had a few boats including a wood runabout in the 50-60s. I wish I could find pictures of those. What great times we had out on the water!

I threw up around a boats as well. My dad had a pretty simple thunderbird 15’ boat. Think it was a72 with a 1965 mercury 55hp motor. We used it quite a bit on White Bear Lake as well as at our cabin in Rhinelander WI. Biggest thing I remember about it the lack of power trim and tilt and my dad running to the back of the boat as we got close to shore to manually lift it. Other thing I remember is always sitting on a cooler between the back to back seats as it only sat 4 and we were a family of 5.

I now share that love affair with boats with my boys. Today it was canoeing on the st. Croix.
