Title: Brand New Member...... I just bought a CVZ 19 Bowrider project boat
Post by: chipbeal on February 25, 2014, 05:54:21 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm new here.  I just bought a gold and bronze CVZ 19 from Texas.  It has a Merc 175 Black Max.  I left to get it just after a snow storm last Friday and got back Yesterday (Monday.) It was 80 degrees in Austin on Sunday. Zero here in Wisconsin today.  I got back late last night.  I look forward to summer and reading and posting on this site.  Boat will be ready to go by summer.

Hi All,
Thanks for the warm welcome.  Here is a pic I took in Austin a few miles down the road.  I will send more pics as this project develops.  Yes, now the boat has a ton of salt on it.  I won't be able to wash it until it gets warmer and some snow melts.  Maybe June the way things are looking right now.. . I hope that is a joke!  Not sure....

The motor needs carburetor work and the top needs a clearcoat (Texas sun harm,) and the interior needs some minor work, but other than that it's in pretty good shape.  The floor and interior was replaced in 2011.  The big wheel trailer (unknown brand and no vin) is in great shape.  Heavy duty... Good and solid.  I had to look back a few times while driving to make sure it was hooked up to my truck!

If you don't mind a little hard work, I brought mine back without clearcoating.

Oh my!  Please share your secret!  I don't mind hard work at all.  As soon as it gets a little warmer and I can take the cover off the boat I will send pics of the gel coat on top.  It's pretty rough in several spots. By the way is yours a CVZ-19?  Would love to see pics of the whole boat....

Take off some of the deck hardware (Cleat or Bow light) to see how faded your flake is and post a picture.
If it's not to bad compound might fix it.
If bad ... Wet sanding should help.
If to bad (flakes coming through gel) you might not be able to save it.

Wet sanding with courser to finer grit paper works wonders, as you can see by Doran's CVZ.

This sounds great.  I don't have a heated garage and can't even back my boat into my garage right now because of the ridiculous amount of snow we have.  I will get on this as soon as the weather permits.  Thanks for the tips.  I will send pics as soon as I can.  Come on spring!!!

Hi All,

It's been awhile since I posted.  Snow is still deep in Duluth/Superior.  My CVZ-19 hasn't moved.  But, it is thawing out.  I get out and remove the cover and snow when it gets kinda warm so it will dry out inside, then more snow!!!   I have taken a real close look at the gel coat and think I can restore the finish with wet sanding, polishing compound, and a good paste wax, without clear-coating.  I just wish it were really spring so I can start on this project.  Thanks for all of your comments.  I will send pics as soon as I get going on this project.

It's been nice around here (St.Paul, MPLS) high 40's and said to get to 70 today ...
We did my flake with (if I remember right) 800,1500 then 2000 wet sand, then 3M compound then 3M FI2 and a waxing.
After doing Tim's boat with 3000 wet sand (3M just came out with it shortly after doing my boat) his looked so good , I stripped hardware and did the 3000 wet sanding and compounding, FI2 and wax.
Worked wonders, bet it will do the same for your ...

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your ideas. I have been working several hour on a small portion of my bow.  I have used 600, 800, and 1000, wet sand paper.  I have also used rubbing compound, polishing compound and a really good carnuba wax. I have actually spent about 4 hours on this little section.  As you can see, in the pics, I have a white blotchy thing going on that I can't affect with anything I do.  Does anyone know how to get rid of these blotchy areas?

When I was doing my deck with F it 2, I got a 3 inch "Blotch" ...
Not sure why ... Maybe let it get dry, or tried to do to large of an area at one time ?
Had to go back with wet sanding (2000 then 3000) compounding and F it 2 to get it out ...

Where "Blotches" there after wet sanding ?

You probably just need to sand more. Maybe some of the oxidation when deeper in certain spots more than others.

Thanks for the reply..... Blotches were there before, during, and after wet sanding.  They are in the gel coat or perhaps a previous clear-coating. I am very perplexed.  They just won't come out.  I have even gone down to 400, then 600, then 800 and then 100 wet-sanding and they never go away.  Very frustrating.

Do you think it has been clear coated ?

I was also wondering if it had been poli-glow'd or something too...

What is Poly-Glow ?  I have a section on my 16 that has a sort of milky haze on the gelcoat that I cannot quit put my finger on.   Seems more like something was applied or coated over it.   Its not plain sun fade or chalking, its not calcuim or hard water buildup, I dont know what it is.   I was going to go after it with compound first.    It clears up when hit with acid wash, but then back to milky when drys.

What is Poly-Glow ?
I have a theory it's acrylic floor polish but that's just my guess. Google it. It's a sponge/wipe on finish for faded fiberglass. Overall the reviews are purty good IF you prep the surface properly. If'n ya don't it'll magnify areas where you didn't.

Yea that sounds about right.   Its hard but seems softer than gelcoat.  Ill know more when I hit it with the compound and polisher.  thank you.

seems right, it was some kind of acrylic Mop and Glow.  Machine polisher and compound took it off with some work, whats under looks much better.  Just need to hit with fine polish and wax and back to normal.

Hi everyone!
I haven't posted since last summer.  I found the cure for my blotched deck.  First of all, the problem was a bad previous clear coat sitting in the Texas sun.  I had to use a fairly strong paint and varnish remover to get it off.  I had to be very careful but it is working.  I am about 1/3 done.  I can't wait for real spring in northern Wisconsin to start again since I don't have a large enough garage.

It's been over a year since I posted on my project boat. I found out the splotching on my boat was a really bad clearcoat. I was told by a local boat repair shop that there was no hope. I would have to get a whole new paint job. So, I decided to experiment. I got a little bit of stripper and put it on a bad spot, watched it, I then took the stripper and clearcoat off, and it seemed to work. I've been in the process of stripping my entire finish down to the metalflake. It's not perfect but it's  ton better. After I get it totally stripped I will then sand it and wax it. I hope that will work. The boat promises to be  beautiful. After I get the finish done, I will then start on the upholstery. Will send pictures along the way.

If your only wet sanding down to 1000, you need to keep going. I sand mine down to 2500 in 500 changes ... 1000-1500-2000-2500. You can get it to shine like glass if you go that far..

Hey all,
Long time since I posted last. I finally got my boat water worthy last summer after a complete new paint job and new interior. I could never get the original gel coat restored. The blemishes went right down into the metal flake so I went with new flake as close to original as I could find. My pictures aren’t great but you can see what I have done. It’s winter now so I’m stuck not doing anything for the season. I can’t wait for late spring.

Which brand of flake and size did you use?
