I more than likely will make it. We're going to Arkansas the last week of July, so I should beable to get the ok from the wife to make it. Besides, my daughter's best friend moved to Hudson so I have a reason to go!

Great Dan!  WHat type of boat are you driving again?  Are you thinking of tenting or staying elsewhere?
I'll update the list, although I was optimistic and already have you on it!   ;)

Thanks,
Brian

I'll have my 74 CV16 with a 150 Merc out back. We'll be in a tent, the kids love it that way, but the wife doesn't!!!

I plan to be there and am hoping my brother will come as well with his Intimidator. We'll probably show up Friday, tent it Friday night and then head home on Saturday.

Just an update...  We have quite the response so far for the meet in August.  I would like everyone to start thinking about it a bit more as the time approaches.  I talked with Glenn (Gdubya) from the Texoma meet, and he said that all in all he spent about $2500 on their meet of equal size.  I would really prefer not to have to spend that much money, but rather I would like to have everyone plan to bring items so that we can all share in the expenses, and no one has to spend more than what would be a normal camping weekend.

I am willing to be responsible for 2 meals.  I can take care of a group meal on Saturday morning, and a group meal on Saturday night.  I work in catering, so that shouldn't be too hard for me.  Beyond that, I think that we could all plan to have a light lunch at noon on saturday (on the river) and Sunday we can fend for ourselves.

Also, please bring whatever camping stuff that might make the group more comfortable.  Of course we are going to be HQ'd at a tent campground where vehicles need to be in the parking area.  However, if anyone has awnings, camp chairs, portable stoves (for making coffee on Saturday and Sunday morning), etc.  This would be a big help.

I would really like to make this a "everyone bring what you like, and a little more for others" type of thing.  I have some lawn games, but that would be a good thing to bring too.

Here is a tentative (and flexable) schedule.

Friday afternoon and evening...  Arrive and set up camp.  Meet and greet everyone.  Group Campfire / Games / Show off the boats /  etc

Saturday Morning...  8:30am-10:00am  Group Breakfast and social time

Saturday Mid-Day... 10:00am-4:00pm Group river run with lunch somewhere... picnic / restaurant?

Saturday Dinner...  5:00pm-6:30pm  Group Dinner Cookout at campground

Saturday Evening...  7:00pm-9:00pm  Sunset river trip / Games / Campfire till whenever...

Sunday Morning... Your Choice till we pack up and head for home

Let me know if you have thoughts as we begin to plan...  As you all know, this is my first time planning this event.  There have been a few in the past, and I would very much like to make this an annual tradition.  As years go by, we can change time of year, campground, part of the state, etc.  However, I would like to get us off the ground with this event, and see where we can go from here!

Thanks for the assistance in planning, and this is going to be a great event!

Title: Looking for a hotel in Lake City?
Post by: ChfBrianB on July 27, 2008, 04:13:26 PM
For those of you who look at camping like it's a disease...  I found that Lake City has an AmericInn.

Not the best reviews on the planet, but I'm sure they mean well, and we are not talking about Downtown Chicago facilities here either...

I'm sure that it will be great and there might even be less mosquitos!  :)

As of 7/27 it seems that there is availablilty Friday night but possibly not Saturday night.  Get the reservations now if you need them!

Greetings all!

Now is the time to start thinking about the meet.  It is two weeks away.  My questions to you are...

1)  What can you bring that will make a fun time for everyone?

2)  Do you have extra chairs, awnings, lawn games, etc.?

3)  Do you want to bring some dishes to pass for any meals? (I plan to do the main meals on Saturday    breakfast and dinner, but any food, any time is welcome!)

4)  Does anyone want to look into places on the river to visit that are within the Lake Pepin area?  Stockholm is just across the river and has a nice park...  What else is there for us to do on Saturday?

5)  Will a group of people be willing to be on the welcoming crew?  I'm looking for parking assistants, launching assistants at the ramp, anyone who is willing to be a set of extra hands to help people find what they need and get to the places they want to be on Friday as we all begin to arrive.  Let's make everyone feel welcome!

6)  How about firewood?  I'm not sure if we can bring it in... Can we look into that?

7)  Are there extra things that we need to consider?  Supplies, games, 2 cycle oil, anything...

8.  Is anyone willing to contribute to the food and camping expenses?  Maybe you can't bring chairs or food, but might be able to chip in financially.

9)  Did you remember to go to the link and pick up a t-shirt???  http://www.cgoamn.com/12.html (http://www.cgoamn.com/12.html)

Let's make this the best meet possible!  It's all about the fellowship and the fun!  Please let me know if you are not on the attendance roster, and let's go boating!!!

Hey Brian,

I have a 10x10 Easy up that I will bring, and have a couple extra coolers and chairs if you need them. We will most likely stay at the Americ inn Friday Night and head out after the Saturday night sunset run.

Let me know what my wife and I can help with? Parking, greeting, launching, drinking your beer..ect...

Great!  If you would be willing to arrive a little early on Friday Afternoon (Whenever works for you two) and then you could help me with getting people into the ramp and parking trailers, that would be great.

We could also help people unload their gear and get people organized.  I could use about 4 mor people for these things too!

The camping gear and coolers sounds great too!

Thanks for your willingness to help out!  I think it's going to be a nice touch!

Feel free to bring anything that you would like...  Food would be great...  Snacks, bars, beverages...  Whatever!

That goes for everyone!   I'll take care of the main portions of the meals, but please feel free to bring sides to pass or whatever you like to make!

I think that it would work well to bring what you like for yourself, and a little extra to pass.

Thanks for the offer!
Title: Saturday Menu...
Post by: ChfBrianB on August 05, 2008, 09:42:49 PM
Here is the menu that I have planned for Saturday!

Ok, for those of you that have been following the schedule of events, here is the latest update!

As I mentioned in a previous message, I am happy to be responsible for two meals on Saturday.  I would like to provide breakfast and dinner.

Breakfast will be from 8:30am to 10:00am.  To be honest, I'll most likely have to food ready by 9:00am, but should have the coffee ready by 8:30 for those of you that really need it!

Breakfast - 8:30-10:00am
Hot Coffee
Brian's Breakfast Potato's (Cubed baby reds, with diced sauteed onion and green pepper.)
Fire Grilled 2oz sasage links
Family style scrambled eggs with melted cheese and sauteed onions
Fresh apples (for breakfast and to take with on the boat trips)

Lunch will be a bring your own picnic or a stop at a lake side restaurant (Which ever you choose)

Dinner - 5:00-6:30pm
Traditional Lake side fish fry! (I am going to use my own beer battered cod)
Jo-Jo's (Seasoned and fried potato wedges)
Fresh made coleslaw
Fresh cut fruit (watermelon, cantelope, honeydew, etc.)

That's my plan...  I encourage everyone to bring anything that might go along with this.  Snacks for through the day, smores for the campfire, etc. anything that you like.  If you don't want to pack anything, feel free to donate to the food fund, and I will have enough for everyone!  As I mentioned before, this is what I do for a living, so it's very exciting for me!

Also,  Please consider bringing any lawn games that you have.  I have a few, but have limited space to pack everything.  Here is a list of some things that might be useful...

Tarps, awnings, for wind or rain.
Camp chairs.
Portable radio
Coolers (full or empty)  Pop, Beer, NA Beer, etc.
Picnic stuff, Ketchup, Salt and Pepper, Plates, Napkins, table cloths, etc.
Lawn Games, croquet, bochi ball, beach balls, volleyball, horseshoes, etc.
Extra Anchors (for if it's windy)
2 cycle oil
Can someone please bring a good socket set and a tool kit???

I'm starting to get excited!

Please post a reply if you know what you might be able to bring so that we don't get too many duplicates.

Thanks!
Brian~

Well Brian, I sure hope to be bringing just what the family needs. The CV16 doesn't have much room to carry much else. My painter assures me that he'll get the boat done for me. He'd better.

I will bring some side dishes, not sure yet.  I will be bringing many large bags of Oke-Doke prepopped popcorn for the evening campfire or whenever someone needs a snack.  The menu you prepared sounds great.  I'm a terrible cook.  Am beginning to prep the CVX 16 for the 250 mile trip from West Bend, WI.  Glad I made a reservation a while ago at the AmericInn for Friday and Saturday night as the place does appear to be booked for Saturday.  Anyone else staying at the AmericInn?

I will be attending with my friends Robert and DeeAnn Kaiser.  They don't own a boat but have boated with me for years and are looking forward to the meet.  They booked a suite with a jaccuzzi (I'm jealous).  All I have is a standard room.  Nice to know other Glastron owners will be at the AmericInn.  See you in Lake City,  Brian Bondehagen

We might be staying at the Sunset Motel. If not we will be camping. Camping might be difficult for us because we will have to buy all of our food in the States (meat products that is) to avoid any trouble at the border. Either was we will have a good time I'm sure.

Lake City is on Highway 61 which you can pick up on the SE side of St. Paul.  If you are riding in on 94 going east, I would go through both Minneapolis and St. Paul.  On the East side of St. Paul you will see and exit for Hwy 494.  494 is the southern belt loop that goes around the cities.  So, take 494 south and that will intersect with hwy 61 going south toward Hastings and Lake City.

Let me know if that makes sense!

Okay so my boat will not be ready :( My dad tried his best to get it ready before he had to leave, but it did not happen. He was supposed to come with me but had to change his plans. He really wanted to come. The boat broke a rocker arm and then bent a push rod. We have fixed that problem but have not had enough time on the water making sure everything is okay since the repair. I can't work on the boat because it is three hours away from where I live and I don't have enough time off between now and the meet. It is a huge disappointment to not be able to bring it. But I still want to come to the meet. My family was going to stay in the Sunset motel but now that I am not bringing the boat I will probably bring the trailer and stay at the RV campground. I really hope that there is enough room in one of the boats for my wife, son, and myself.

Not looking good for me this weekend :'(. My boat's still not gel coated. I think if my buddy doesn't have it done by Tuesday, I may try it myself. It looks real bad now, all sanded down and waiting. We had a string of family dying lately, keeps us from getting together to do it, and we work together ???. First, I had an uncle die, didn't get it striped down and sanded for him to get to it. Then we had a run on people wanting their cars painted, gotta get the bills paid, customers first. Then one of his uncles died, he left Thursday be back in on Monday. I had another uncle die on Saturday. I really hope the funeral is during the week, my family has a thing with Saturday funerals :-\. I'll know some time tomorrow what's going on.

So, we are 4 days away...  Here is the plan that I'm thinking about for the Saturday morning run...  I think afterlooking at the map it would be best to go north from the campground on the river (lake pepin) heading towards Redwing.  This would put Frontenac state park in the middle with a beach and activities there as well.  Then depending on how far we want to go, we could head into Redwing.

It's a nice historical area, and seems like it would be a nicer ride (past maiden rock, etc.)

In the southerly direction the first thing we would run into is wabasha, and I don't think there is alot to see or do in that direction.

So, for now, the plan is to head NORTH from the Campground as a group at 10:30 am.

There is a winnery some where on the Wisconsin side, not sure were or if it's accessible by boat. I'll try to get the info.
We are in the Americinn in Red Wing with a pool if any kids are interested. Thanks for all the organization!

My brother also wanted to come but his Intmidator has been with the gel coat guy since Feb! :o  I plan to bring my boat home in a couple of weeks in hopes that I can meet up with you guys some weekend on the river late August/early September. When we actually stay in town for a weekend.

Awesome job planning this event!  I'm bummed that I'm not going to be there so take lots of pictures so I can pretend I made it. You guys will have a blast I'm sure. Hopefully you or someone else will have the energy to do another one summer of '09.

Brian, Hope to be there by 9:00am. I'm going to trailer to Lake City, if I drive in the camp ground can I drive over to you guys, or won't they let me. If I can does the road loop back around so I can get out, or will I have to turn around. If I can't drive in, is there a parking lot out front so we can park and walk in. Or should we put in at the Lake City marina and drive the boat over. Should be 3 or 4 boats in our group including Scott G. and Tom V. Hopefully light winds and sunshine. You can boat most everywhere on the lake, CAUTION, almost everywhere. I know the lake fairly well, at least I know places I would not take my boat. This should be fun meeting people and having a good time, hope to talk to everyone there.

Hey Mike, great to hear from you!  You would have to look at the map of the campground.

http://lakecitymn.govoffice2.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={71FDED36-92EE-4AA9-AB35-6A1FF61B4145} (http://lakecitymn.govoffice2.com/index.asp?Type=B_BASIC&SEC={71FDED36-92EE-4AA9-AB35-6A1FF61B4145})
It looks like there is a turn around at the landing, but I can't promise what the parking looks like.  I know you can drive around the campground, but that's for loading and unloading only.

If I were you I might call the campground office and ask them their thoughts, they were very helpful to me when I set up the reservations.  I'm sure they can give you all the specifics.

I'm really glad that you are coming!  I haven't had a chance to see you this year!

I went to the campground this earlier this year. I don't think there will be enough room to drive your truck with a boat attatched (especially a CV27) and turn around. The sites are kinda in the woods so there are a lot of trees to dodge and the "road" that goes by the sites is more of a walking path then a road. There is a HUGE parking lot for all of us to leave our boats on the trailers with our tow vehicle.

Boat landing is not really part of the campground. You have to drive out of the campground to get to it. Also, the our campground sites are on the water but the shore is all boulders so you won't be able to pull your boat up there. There is a nice beach at the campground where boats could be beached but not necessarily near our sites (your boat will sit alone in the river, scary).

Brians map may help explain this.

We hope to leave Fargo early enough to avoid heavy traffic around the Cities. What?s the forecast for the weekend? Look forward to seeing everyone.

Hi All - Just popped onto the forum here for the first time in a while.   Hope to catch up with everyone on Saturday, but plans are a bit up in the air at this point.

A couple of tidbits on running down the lake to Wabasha, if anyone is interested.
   - Lake Pepin can be a bit of a bear sometimes, depending on the wind.  Plan accordingly.  If the wind is from the North, the North side of Pepin will be fairly calm and you'll have an easy run down the lake.  Coming back up will be a different story.    :)

   - Places of interest on the South side of the Lake and down river a little:
           - The Pickle Factory in Pepin, WI  http://www.pepinpicklefactory.com/  -- This is on the Wisconsin side of the Lake, towards the South end.   This is a bar/restaurant with a dock on the south side of the sailboat marina.   An easy way to find the place is to look for the sailboat marina.  You can see that from quite a ways away.  Shoot for that, then head to the south side of that and you will see the dock for the Pickle Factory.   Has outdoor seating.
           - Slippery's in Wabasha.  http://www.slipperysumr.com/    Yes, this is the Slippery's from Grumpy Old Men... sort of.   It's right on the channel of the river, in the no wake zone.   A tip on docking here... there's usually a fairly decent current at this point in the river.  If coming from the North, it's usually better to pass the docks, then turn around and approach the docks while motoring against the current.   Also has outdoor seating.
           - The National Eagle Center in Wabasha.   http://www.nationaleaglecenter.org/   Also in the no wake zone at Wabasha.   The docks here are just past the Wabasha bridge, on the south side.   This place is brand new and pretty neat to take in.   A heads up -- There is an admission fee to this.
           - Also in the channel on the south side of the lake, there are many sandy banks and dunes to pull up to.   Good for hanging out and letting the kids play in the sand.   For those not familiar with river boating, be aware of wing damns beneath the water surface.   These are large rock piles which are built in a straight line, perpindicular to the channel.   They keep the flow of water going through the channel.   These wing damns can take out a prop or lower unit in a hurry.   Never boat outside the channel, unless you are familiar with the water.    If you are going to head to the shoreline from the channel, do so in a perpindicular line from the channel.  This will greatly reduce your odds of hitting a wing damn.    :)

If I think of anything else, I'll add it later.

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Another thought... When heading up river to Red Wing, from Lake City.... make sure your fuel tanks are topped off.   ;D   There aren't many/any stops along the way.

At this point, the weather looks great!  Mostly sunny all weekend, saturday is supposed to be a 4mph wind out of the west.  Should be fairly calm water!

Sounds like it couldn't be much nicer!!!

Yup, that should make for pretty clean water on the MN side of Lake Pepin

Just got back from Big Marine Lake, made a few adj. and checked the choke operation and that is working fine. Still running like crap when on a long Idle, carb will have to come off take a 3 day bath and get all new guts. Will there be many no wake zones in our travels on Pepin?

Not on Lake Pepin.

If you head down to Wabasha, there is a no wake zone around the bridge there.

Ok, here is the last post before I hit the road in the morning...

The weather looks great for the weekend!  Winds are mild out of the west which will mean that the west side where the campground is located should be calm.

I would like to head out to the north (heading towards Red Wind) on Saturday morning around 10:30am.  It sounds like there are some places where we could dock or beach the boats in downtown Red Wing so that we could take a walk through downtown.  It's a very historic area.  We could pick up lunch there too.

I'm going to bring a 1 person towable tube and ski ropes if anyone is interested in using it.  If not, I'm just going to float around!  :)

I'm not sure if anyone is going to bring a tool kit yet, but if you have one, please consider bringing it.

I'm very excited, and thank God that it's supposed to be great weather!!!

Rememebr to bring your camera!  This is going to be the gathering of the year!!!

Does anyone have a video camera to take some film?

My cell is 651-260-5266 if anyone needs more information.

Brian~

Ok people, plans have changed. No longer going to visit the kids friend, so I'm looking for a hotel in the area. The wife really wants a room, but if we need to, I'll bring the tent, any openings in the campground yet? We're going to drive to Tomah and spend the night at my dads place, then head out in the morning for the lake. I still have to mount the windshield, and I want to sand it down to 800 and buff. I'll be up all night again.

By the way, this'll be the first time in the water for me this year!

Glad you will be able to make it!! Brian reserved an entire chunk of the campground. There will be room for you. I don't think there are too many motels in the area. An Americinn but it sounds like it's full. Red wing might have something but thats 15 minutes away.

I will be heading out as soon as I get out of the office here in a couple hours!!!

I'll bring a tool kit, although it's been around for years and missing some wrenches and drivers and some sockets.

Should have pretty much everything we might need though.

I'll be there in the morning. Hopefully in enough time to catch you guys before you set sail/trim............

Daughter will be with me so I don't htink I'll have her open a 46MPH trying to catch up if I'm running late.

:) Thanks, Brian and Lisa for a great event. For a first time or anytime, it was a huge success!!  Dee and I enjoyed meeting everyone, and though we don't own a Glastron, felt very much part of the group.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again, and wish all the best.
