CV 21 WINDSHIELD AND FRAME
« on: January 31, 2023, 03:14:50 PM »
I'm looking to refresh an old topic:  where to get a CV21 windshield and upper windshield frame.  Just bought a 1973 with a "shortie" windshield.  Ugh.  Is UPD Plastics still the best place for the plexi?  And some have recommended American Runabouts for the frame, but aren't they in Germany? Even if they could make it, how do you get it to the US undamaged?  As an alternative, I'm an automotive engineer, so I could probably make a form to bend the overall shape, but still need a length of the raw extrusion....I would go about anywhere in the US to pick it up.  And is it one piece from back to front to back?

Any input appreciated, or if you have a CV21 not too far from Detroit that I could take measurements from, that would be great too!

(PS - Disregard the tarp support)

Windshield would be easy ..  Look here for options ..  http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?topic=2901.0

Windshield frame might not be so easy ..  Taylor Made was original supplier.
If you can find a cross section of original frame, you could find extrusions and make your own frame.

There might be other members with CV21's .. but can't remember off hand .
Gil has a CV21 and might be able to help with measurements.
His profile is here ..  http://forum.cgoamn.com/index.php?action=profile;u=67

I have a spare windshield and frame for a 75 cv-18? might be something you could use to make a new one on for a 21.  The 75 has a full length frame that, I think could be cut down to fit he 21..

That's a super nice offer, NES.  But when I look at the windshield dimension tables, the CV21 windshield is 3" longer than the CV18 so the bends at the upper corners of the windshield are going to be in the wrong place, and probably about impossible to straighten and then re-bend.  I'd probably have greater success with bending a fresh piece.

Maybe I'll try Taylor Made, thanks Hyperacme.

When I look more closely at your CV18, NES, I can see that your upper frame has two different sections with a joint at the upper windshield corners.  The CV21 keeps the same section all the way around because it has to frame the top of the windshield and the two small quarter window pieces at the rear.  What I can't tell from any photographs, yet, is if it is one piece all the way around or has a joint, maybe at the centerline of the boat?

I can also tell that the grab handle integrated into the windshield frame in the rear seat area is going to be a problem finding......maybe I can at least get close.

Good to know carlsoncvx18.....I will keep that in mind if I have to go the DIY route.
It will be a few months before I can make a good assessment of how well the gel coat and interior will restore before investing in some of the big missing or incorrect pieces (windshield and frame, engine).

Many thanks to Hyperacme, carlsoncvx18, thedeuceman, nes-cv23, others in my quest to replace the windshield and frame on my CV21, including tipping me off to the posting for a complete used assembly in NY.  Thanks to you all, seller accepted my offer and I am making plans to pick up this weekend.

Which leads to my next question:  Is the upper windshield frame one-piece from from back to front to back again?  That would be one big bent piece!  Or is there a joint either at the center of the windshield or at each corner, making it either 2- or 3-piece?  Would it then be screws or rivets holding it together?  I've looked at a lot of photos and can't tell. I'm trying to get the assembly long and skinny to fit in my Suburban.  Worst case scenario is I have to cut it just aft of the upper windshield corners and fabricate my own joint plates.

I know some of the other CV's have a joint in each windshield corner, but part of that is because the frame section changes.  The CV21 has the unique quarter windows though, so I think it keeps the same glass-retaining upper section front to back.

Appreciate it if anyone knows for sure....

Would guess it's in a few sections.
Best bet would be to message or email Gil.
His email should be in his profile .. If not I can get it for you.

I have several emails into Gil.  He would know the answer to the CV21 upper windshield frame being one-piece or not.

Another question is whether the upper frame is aluminum or stainless steel.  The more I look at Gil's boat, the more I think SS.  I also see photos of a CV21 in Sweden being sold mid-restoration that has the upper windshield frame propped up loose, and looks pretty one-piece to me.  Bottom line is I'm not going to want to cut a one-piece SS frame into multiple sections.

So plan B if it's one piece is to take some 4-6' lengths of electrical conduit with me and use it to strap that big horseshoe to the roof rack of my Suburban after I've taken it off the windshield and rear quarter windows.  It will ride up top while everything else is inside in the back.

Gil says it is, in fact, one-piece and that I shouldn't cut it.  So I will make a frame and fasten it to my roof rack.

Thanks for the offer Glastronjohn18.

It's up in Clayton, NY, on the St. Lawrence.  Probably 1.5hrs north of you(?).  I think I've got a good plan for me and the wife to do some disassembly, strap the big upper piece to the roof, and take in some of the Thousand Islands' scenery.  Appreciate you having my back, though.

I was able to complete the deal on the CV21 windshield and pick it up in NY over the weekend.

A couple details in case you find yourself in a similar situation:

1.) The plexi was held into the frames with screws.  Don't know if that was factory, or if the windshield had already been replaced.
2.)  The only silicone was on the two small quarter windows.
3.)  The upper frame was a one-piece aluminum extrusion, about 20' long bent into a horseshoe shape.  I got it back to MI fastened to a frame made from 3/4" electrical conduit that had been wire tied to my roof.

Thanks to everyone for helping me on my treasure hunt.  I will try to post some pictures.

Got to see about two of the Thousand Islands from Clayton, NY.  Would like to see more, but only if I could be in a boat.....

CV16 has small clips that slid over plex glass, then kind of popped into aluminum frame.
Had a picture of one .. but can't find it ..
That windshield is as rare as hen's teeth .. LOL
