So....what would have been the cause of the sand bar getting that large?  the dredging?

I think mid 1800 to very early 1900's St. Croix was used for logging, pretty sure it was never used for barge traffic.
Early pictures could have been in spring flooding or it was dredged for logging.

Interesting. Almost looks like the sand circles in 1957 were man made. Wonder if they were trying to build more of a controlled passage through there. It does look pretty flooded in the 1947 picture though.
