CVZ18 shift and throttle cable length/type?
« on: August 24, 2021, 02:29:21 PM »
Hi all,
My boat came with a ridiculously long throttle cable (20'!) and a stiff 12' shift cable.
I am having trouble confirming what length the throttle cable should be.
The engine now has a Edelbrock (Carter) 4 barrel on it with the correct throttle cable mount if it makes a difference (I doubt it but...).
I assume they are the same length as for the CVX18? One source says 14'?
It appears that to get the correct ends (threaded on one end) I need the Teleflex 3600 TFXtreme series cables?
If so the 12' is not currently available (hopefully not discontinued)
As always - Thanks a bunch!
Scott

I don't know the answer ... but should be easy to measure like a steering cable.
My old steering cable was 11' and they didn't make them anymore so had to go with a 12' and route it around splash well.

thanks - I should have added that neither the control box nor the engine are in the boat....(but I am hoping for a September reunification!)
EDIT: but obviously that doesn't stop me from estimating the locations/length...

I have a friend who had "Trail & Lake Sports" in northern MN.
He has a Boat Load of controls hanging up in his storage buildings.
If you know what you need he will very likely have a good used one.
Assuming you are looking for original.

BTW, he has more boat parts than you can imagine !
I walked thru his buildings last weekend and lost count of all the stuff.
If you need it, he very likely has several.  Not even joking.
Hundreds of Outboards (+ a big shed full of steel tanks), Countless Outdrives, Manifolds, Carburetors, Lower Units for miles.
He has racks of NOS stuff on shelves for all makes and models, etc. etc.

I also stopped at my favorite Boat Boneyard outside LaPorte and he has LOTS of old boats, including some vintage Glastrons.

Can't find my old order Scott.  I just measured the existing cable and then went 'up' to the nearest teleflex cable length.

Thanks for checking Doran,
I have reasonable confidence I know the right length, and I only see one type that has the ends I have.
I trusted somebody else's PN's and ended up having to return the cables - hence the question here, but I think I've got it!
Thanks everybody else who responded too!

I'll reward you with a recent picture - she is starting to look like a boat again!

I realize this a very old thread but I haven't been around for a while and using the search thing has me wanting...just wondering if there was a cable length for the CVX-18 confirmed...I'm thinking it's going to take a while to track one down and symptoms are telling me I need to plan ahead.

Andy, it's best if you start a new thread on this topic. That said we'll need to know your engine outdrive combo. Is this for the '86 CVX18 ? The length the cable depends on the OEM as the throttle cable on a Mercruiser come around the back of the carb and on the OMC Cobra drive it snakes around the front of the carb.

Here is the OMC setup on my '86 CVX18 before I swapped over to Merc. Just to confuse everyone the PO Installed a Mercruiser engine to a OMC Cobra outdrive. You can see the throttle cable routed to the front of the carb. Quite a bit longer than the Merc. and it pushes the throttle and the Merc pulls the throttle.

Here is the Merc setup on my '86 CVX18. The cable is routed routed to the back of the carb.

Which do you have ?  Let us know, hope this helps.

Hi everyone, I'm still here and still plugging away at this project!
I bought a 12' cable for the shift and 14' for the throttle and they both fit as intended.
