Title: Let's get to know each other...
Post by: ChfBrianB on April 11, 2008, 09:54:29 PM
I've been contemplating how we can get to know each other by more than a screen name.  The profile is sometimes hard to get it to list the information that you want.

So...  Why not make a post here about who you are, where you are from, the boats that you own, etc.

Then when you post elsewhere onthe board, we can use this as a referance to who we are talking to.

Who knows, I'm the type of guy that likes to get to know people.  Let's see what happens.

Thanks for helping me build this site...  It's been a lot of fun!

Hi All,
I'm Jim,
I have an old 1968 V174 - with a merc 120 I/O.
I purchased it four years ago cause it reminded me of the boats we had growing up in Mound, MN
We try to spend as much time on Minnetonka as weather permits.
My wife Kelly loves to throw anchor or sight see the shore lines. My two teenage girls want to "go fast" or spend the day on the tube.

Hello,

I am Jason.

I have grown up around boats my entire life. Now living in St. Paul (only for 1 more week though) I have my Glastron and love getting out on the water as much as possible. There is no better feeling then cruising down a glass like river at 45 mph with the sunshine on your head and the wind in your face.

Hi There:
Brad here.
I live in beautiful Kelowna B.C. Canada
I grew up around Glastron/Carlsons as my mentor, the father of my girlfriend through highschool,  owned the largest dealership in Western Canada.
Our lake is approx 80 miles by five miles and eventhough we're in Canada we get five or six good months of boating in a year. The Okanagan Valley is located north of Omak Washington and  actually referred to as Canada's Hawaii as we often see temperatures over a 100 degrees in the summer. Our climate is semi-arid (almost desert).
Presently I own a blue 1979 CV23 sterndrive. I'm looking for a project CVX20 as I managed to aquire a rather old but still functioning twin turbo set up for a 460 Ford that actually came out of a CVX23 jet. If anyone hears of a hull and drive, or just hull, in the Pacific northwest give me shout at cv23@telus.net

Hello everyone.  My name is Brian.  I live in West Bend, Wisconsin which is about 25 miles north of Milwaukee.  I own a 1977 Glastron Carlson CVX 16 Deluxe with a 1977 Mercury 1150.  I purchased the boat in 1982 from the original owner in St Paul, Minnesota.  The boat has performed well over the years.  I did have some transom rot a few years ago, but I found a fiberglass repairman in my area that did an excellent job replacing the transom at a reasonable cost.  We have many lakes and rivers in my area and I think I have boated almost all of them.  I figure I have trailered my boat over 35,000 miles on the original 1977 Shorelander trailer.  My favorite places to go boating include the Fox River from Oshkosh to New London; Lake Winnebago; Beaver Dam Lake; the Milwaukee River through downtown Milwaukee; Lake Michigan (on those rare occasions when it is calm); and various lakes around Eagle River, Wisconsin.  I am looking forward to the get-together in August at Lake City, MN.

I'm the third owner and have all doc. of the boat including the Color sales Brochure off the sales room floor.

Hi there!

My name is Nick.  My wife and I live in Hudson and have a classic glastron.  We'd love to get to know more people in the area - we've lived here for 2 1/2 years but hardly know anyone.  If I knew how, I would post some pics of our GT-140.  Thanks!

Hi Nick.

First of all, to post pics, click on "additional options" then "browse" to the location of te picture you want to post. Keep in mind it needs to be fairly small (less then 500K)

I also live in Hudson. Lived here for all of 5 months now and love it. We live near the south end of willow river state park. Would love to catch up with you sometime on the river. There is also a good size lake just north of Hudson I have been dying to check out. Bass Lake I think it's called. My wife and I have a green 1974 Glastron Carlson CV16SS.

Andy from Southern California.  Hope to explore the Minnesota lakes some day. Pictures of your area make it out to be a boaters paradise.

Thanks for letting me look in!

PS: Glastron Scott. How fast are you running with that 150 on the 16. I'm not happy with my 150 set up and am thinking about going back to a 115.

Hi everyone, my name is Richard but also go by Rich or Richie, and I've been weak - oh, wait - not that kind of support group? In that case - I'm in Stamford CT which is about 40 miles east of New York City and right on the shore of Long Island Sound. I currently own two classic Glastrons, a 1970 V176 Swinger and a 1967 V174 Crestflite SuperSport. I did have for a short while a 1969 V142 Skiflite but sold it last summer. I'm also employed as a boat mechanic in Stamford and get to work on customer's boats more than I can get to work on my own. Most of you know me from the CGOA main board and now I've decided to branch out a bit and see what the other boards are doing.

Hope you find this site worth while. It is pretty much the only one I use anymore.

Hi people

My name is Ross and I am new to this, so if my message posts somewhere weird, thats why.  :o
Anyway, I have a 67 V163 Bayflite with a 89-90 100 merc. I originally bought this from my dad, who saw it forsale on the side of the road. The seller bought it just for the motor and pulled that. My dad then bought a wreck 67 Larson All American with a 50 merc on it and put that on this Glastron. I ended up buying the wreck from him back in about 94 and this was my first boat, despite being around boats most of my life as a child. We had a cabin on Knife lake in the 60's. So boat needed total restoration which I did in my spare time. It was a real learning experience, especially sawing out the old rotten floor. I was sure I was going to cut right thru the hull! Long story short, I told my dad if he ever decided to part with that Glastron, he had better give me first crack at it. He finally sold it to me back in about 97. I swapped motors with my old boat because it was newer and ran like a champ but it was too small for this boat. I tollerated it for about 6 years until I came across a guy that was retired and rebuild motors for fun and money. The 100hp merc I bouight from him was basically new including paint and decals and moves the 16 footer along nicely. I have made some mods to it so it is not original. Sorry! Anyways nothing major. New carpet, seats, gauges, added a horn and stereo and replaced the old pulley cable steering. Since I am the one always driving the boat and not having a camera handy at the right time, about all I have are pics of it on the trailer and an old one with the 50 on it which I had to scan. Hopefully I'll get some new ones.  I've at least attempted to load a pic of the old boat (I know its not a Glastron! Just this one time) as well as my current Glastron. Look forward to meeting other members.

Hi
I'm confused, but I am new. Says Gregg at the bottom of your post and your profile says "Woodbury" but I thought I replied to a Dan in Marine on St. Croix? Just trying to keep it straight or I'll never get to know anyone  ???
BTW, I have never had my boat on the river and that needs to change but I am a bit paranoid of hitting logs etc. I know someone that hit a wind dam at high speed. Not good! In a group or with someone else who is "river savvy" I would be ok with that.
you obviously know a good place to put in. What part of the river do you cruise on?

Oh and also, for the record, Shafer is between Taylors Falls and Center City. I am not in Shafer proper. Not much there. A couple of bars and gas stations and a trailer park. I am east of Shafer. Hwys 8 and 95. If you know where the Franconia Sculptor park is, they are basically my next door neighbor. Could be worse. Could be a pig or turkey farm!

Ross...
Ya just say'in Hi !
Dan is in Stillwater. I was looking at your profile and saw Shafer. Not knowing were that was I was going to do a search but after your next post ...I know.
I'm Gregg, Live in Woodbury, Launch at Windmill marine which is a few miles from me.
There was a thread with St.Croix launch sites listed...I'll try to find it...
I know Stillwater has one ...maybe two.
Theres the Hudson launch on the north side of the 94 bridge and Beanie's on the south side of the bridge in Mn.
http://www.boatingatbeanies.com/index.html
Lot of stuff float'in in the river in the spring but not bad by summer. Never heard of a wing dam on the St.Croix. But I've been wrong before...LOL..
We have a great bunch of guys/gals and with old boats it always good to travel in groups.

Doing a search for St.Croix boat launch sites and found this...Kind of cool...

Did You Know?
In the Dakota language The St. Croix River is O-Ki-Zu-Wa-Kpa: To meet or to unite, as the waters of a river gather into a lake or two rivers meet or an area where we planted. Dakota and Ojibwe Indians still live near St. Croix NSR.

Hi Gregg

I'll get it figured out some day  :P
Nice to meet you and thanks for the info on the ramps. There is one I drive by everyday just north of Stillwater too and its city or state owned so its free.
I believe the wing dam they hit was on the way south towards Hastings. I think they were too close to shore going under a bridge but it doesnt sound like it was marked and it distroyed their outdrive. A borrowed boat too!

Have not heard of K bid.  I bought an 86 CVX-18 a couple weeks ago on ebay. It is the red metal flake and tan interior.
You can spend some big$$s restoring these boats. Post some pictures if you can. It gets sort of addicting after a while.

Hi, I'm new to this site, hang out over at  carlsonspeed quite a bit. I farm in so. central MN, but spend most weekends no. of Alex on Lake Miltona in summer. The boat is an '84 CVX18 that was a 350/260,swapped it out for a built 406 sbc in front of an Alpha SS drive. Redid floor and interior 2 years ago over winter.

Sweet boat. I love what you have done to the motor. The diamond plate looks real clean in there too. A little bit of customization but still looks fairly original. Great Job!!!

Hope you can make it to the annual meet this year so we can see it in person.

Is it just me or have CVX18's all of a sudden become very popular?????

Hi Brian,

I just found this site and am very excited to know that there is a group like this in Minnesota and Wisconsin! I have been an avid canoe paddler my whole life but loved water skiing in high school. It's been a whole lot of years since then but I finally broke down a couple of years ago and purchased a 1973 Glastron Bayflite V174 off of Craigslist. My wife and I have welcomed 2, soon to be 3 sons into the world in the last few years so I hate to say that I've only taken it out a handful of times, but can't wait to join this community out on the water some time. Unfortunately I'm filming (I'm an independent film-maker as well as boat enthusiast) or I'd drive the family down to the big Red Wing event!

All the best!

Josh

No, I didn't get that one. I drove all the way to Sioux Fall to look at a 78. That was another disappointment. On the way home my girl friend call about one in Dundas. Not perfect but way nicer than the other two I looked at.

The one in Dundas looked really nice.  In fact, it was for sale at the same time I was selling mine.  I was nervous that it was on the market at the same time since it really looked better than mine.  I was confident in the mechanics on my old rig, but I know that one you got looked pretty good!

I'm excited to see more of your boat!  Jason and I have owned that same setup, (and he still does) so if you need any help with anything, just let us know!

I feel silly...  I didn't see your picture of the CV until this morning.  I would have known it wasn't my old one that way.  Anyway, be careful with that tow strap over the sides.  Usually there are some stainless loops on the transom that work really well with a small ratchet strap.

How does it run?

Looks great! I have to admit someone painted the woodgrain black on your boat and it turned out good! I like it. Hope to see you on the water soon!

Yeah... Its painted black and it does look pretty good from about 10 or 20 feet. The wood grain decals were crack real bad. Do you have any idea where I can find new decals?

hmmm, no idea. Maybe someone else will chime in. Or try some local vinyl printing shops. You might be able to find something close.

Greetings everyone,

I just purchased a 73 Carlson CV-16SS I/O and plan to have the metal flake gelcoat restored.  The current condition is very poor so I believe a new metal flake gelcoat layer/s will need to be sprayed.  I am wondering if anyone could recommend an experienced fiberglass/gelcoat organization capable of this task.

Thanks

Hey, guys.  Brand new here and love my 1984 CVX-17.  Still has the original 115 Merc - although I did change the color of the stripes to better match the color of the boat.  Hoping to get out with it again before the marinas are frozen over.

Hello everyone,

My wife & I are the proud owners of a 1976 T-156 powered by a 1978 70 HP Johnson power head/exhaust mounted over our original 1976 70 HP Evinrude lower unit. We've probably have owned this boat for about 10 years or so. We got it when the kids were 'prime tuber age' and really enjoyed how the boat pulled our family together over the summers. We enjoy cruising around Lake Minnetonka & Lake Waconia anytime from a Friday afternoon to a Sunday evening.

Sunday afternoon, April 11th, we pulled the tarp off of the boat & washed the dust off of the seats, etc. & took advantage of the early nice spring weather. We put into Lake Minnetonka at the public North Arm launch & headed over to Forest Lake, a nice spot to let our 3 year old grandson steer the boat under low idle. We were chasing some seagulls around at 1 mph. While we were just sitting there enjoying some quiet time with the motor off we got a visit from your club's administrator, Brian Bergstrom, his wife Lisa, who were the guests of Tonka Jim & one of Lisa's friends, Kristen. They politely introduced themselves & let us know about the club & some of the activities & resources. Well we were pretty impressed that of all the little spots we could have traveled to, we wound up about a couple hundred yards away from the club's administrator.

We're thinking we will enjoy our boat even more now having found some like-minded Glastron enthusiasts. We spent the entire summer, last year, getting some reliable power and look forward to actually boating again, now with some of you good people.

Best regards,
Tom & Neysa

Hey everyone,

My name is Paul and I'm a member over at iboats.com and cgoa.com where I met Hyperacme.  I don't live in MN but you guys seem to be more organized and closest to me  ;)

I live in Colorado above 8000 feet of elevation.  I'm an avid bowhunter, outdoorsmen, and family man with a 13 yr old son named Dylan, 12 yr old daughter Ashley, 4 yr old daughter Tess, 2 yr old daughter Ella, and 7 month old daughter Penelope, and a husband to a wonderful wife named Denisa.  I am scheduled for surgery next month....... :o

I picked up this '74 CV16 SS that was cut up and made into an outboard boat for $150 on the trailer.  No interior, no dash, no motor....NOTHING!  I had recently built a '72 Invader SC15 Bowrider with a '73 Evinrude 65hp that was in the same situation.  I had $1000 invested when I was done and sold it for $2000.  This was my fund to build my Glastron!

I picked up a '76 Merc 1500 for $500 off a guy that was hurting for money.....O.K. so I stole it, I feel really bad!  So I've been lurking around the Glastron Carlson sights trying to get insperation for my build up and advice from the guys that have already done it.  I've decided to build this boat as an OUTBOARD boat since someone already cut it in the first place and I figured it would be better to just go with it.

I need help with how to mount my seats to the floor as the angles of the outboards seem to be the hull itself and inspiration for where to get help with this ratty old windshield, decals, badges, etc......

I hope that I can be welcomed here even though I'm a Colorado boy!

Welcome Paul,

The CV16 is a great boat. I myself have a 1974 CV16SS which I pretty much bought the way it is. Steve (74 Carlson) has a 74 CV16 with a power of tower merc outboard on it. I know he has done more work to his and takes the seats out every winter to keep the mice out so he should be able to help you with your seats. If you need any pictures or have any questions don't be afraid to ask. No Colorado is not too far away and hopefully you get the boat done by August so you can drag it down here so we can get a picture of 3 of these in a row at the annual meet!

I go to Pueblo Reservoir half a dozen weekends during the summer and then we go to Lake McConnaughy in Nebraska every year for the 4th of July and the following week.   That's pretty much all the boating I can do in a year!  I'll have my boat on the water in a month........ I'm a disabled vet and I'm not working right now so I do as much work 3 or 4 days a week that my back and left elbow will allow.  I have the motor running great on the stand after rebuilding the carbs and replacing EVERY wire in the ignition, plugs, wires, engine harness, and new boat harness.  I've cut out most of the old wood from the transom and have replaced it with new wood and a cool brace that ties into the floor and keel for added strength for this Merc 1500.   I'm glassing in the floor, transom, dash, and where the exhaust ports were on the port and starboard aft.  Then I'll be painting it.  I know it's green metal flake right now, but since there was so much cut out of the rear of the boat we're painting it a Metallic Purple and going with a 3 tone grey interior.

I'll get pictures posted when we're done in a few weeks.

Glad you made it ! I dont have any pics on how the seats are mounted but I'll try to explain, under each cushion there will be aluminum angle brackets that mount to the floor and the seat base, make sure they are posioned so that they srew into the flat part of the floor. Two under each cushion so a total of 8 then the seats are also mounted with two bolts going through the gunnal on the sides. If you need more I'll try to get pics.

One more thing MUST USE STAINLESS STEEL hardware only- very important. There is no place in any boat for steel except motor parts and the trailer or maybe something that is plated chrome
Title: Re: Let's get to know each other...
Post by: 74CV16 on May 08, 2010, 11:09:41 AM
Thanks Jason and Steve,

That clears up a lot of my question.  I'll be heading down to the hardware store and I'll see if I can find stainless angle brackets to bolt the bases to.

Also, how tall are the bases of the seat and what is the overall height from the flat floor to the top of the seating surface?  I know it's a bunch of questions so far but you guys seem to be more involved over here then other sites I've tried to make my home.  I would love to get this put together and come down for the August run for sure.......

Here are some pictures for you. As you can see, Glastron is not as smart as Steve. They used some steel screws. But who knows, maybe they were replaced at some point. Hope you can see all the measurements too. These pictures are all of the Drivers side. passenger side looks to be a mirror image.

Not quite a mirror image.  Don't forget about the cut out on the drivers side where the throttle handle is.  That's the only part that is different from the passenger side.

I wish I would have had all this information back before I spent $400 on new back-to-back seats from Overtons........

I'm going to start building some Original style seats to put into the boat in a couple of years.  Now I have all the info I need to make them right!  3/4" Oak base and go from there........

I also know how the OEM seats were mounted so I know how to mount these Overton's Deluxe seats.  Depending on how these Overton's seats go, I may keep them till they're worn out and make the OEM seats for when I tear it down and restore the rest of the boat right!   Or until I find that next CV16 that comes along and gets my attention.........

For the seat brackets I would use aluminum angle instead of stainless, Lighter, cheaper and much eazeir to work with.
Title: Re: Let's get to know each other...
Post by: CVX Fever on May 09, 2010, 09:22:08 PM
Yep that's what I did. One of those brackets fatigued on the rear seat of my CVX16 and cracked. I made two new ones this spring out of aluminum angle I got at the hardware store.

And ditto on using SS hardware. I'm amazed at how corroded some of the hardware was on both my CVX's considering they were fresh water boats. I can't imagine what that stuff would have looked like if they were salt water boats.

Thanks for that download Gregg!  What a treat to get....... I ended up rewiring most of my dad's '94 Merc 150hp today.  He kept running it at a slow trolling speed/idle even after the overheat alarm was going off for 30 minutes......the powerhead got hot enough it melted the wiring for the VRO control box and the idle/advance control box!  He's lucky it didn't stop injecting oil and burn up his motor.........

I have to time it tomorrow and I'm done with it so I can go back to working on my boat again.  I'll post some pictures when I get to final assembly.

This is the Intimidator it is alot of fun .
I like it when you outrun the jet skis with 4 people it pisses em off.
It is running 74 gps but im working on that
It was bad when i got it.
Needed stringers - transom - floor - engine - windshield and had no interior but did have the original trailer.

Isn't Minnetonka in two weeks? (26th or 27th)

Sorry, I should have been more clear.
Not this weekend 19/20 but next weekend 26/27.
I'm leaning toward Sunday 6/27, but may move it to Saturday if the weather is better.

Thanks guys
We gotta keep the glastrons going.
The great thing about them is how many times the new boat people complement you on how cool they are.

On rhe pool deal it was neat but had a little problem getting it out had to power it and winch it on the trailer.
And one thing i didnt plan on was the river water in the cooling system playing hell with the pool water.

Hi Everyone.
My name is Brad and I have a 1991 1900 Glastron runabout.  It may not be old enough to be considered a classic, but I'm working on it.  I bought the boat when I turned 40 some time ago.  It was a mid life crisis thing.  Anyway, my family has had many memorable days boating on the lakes and rivers of MN.  I rather be out boating than most anything else!!

Click the " Additional Options ... " in the bottom left corner and add your pictures ... IF there not to big ...
Do you have a Photobucket account ?
Makes it much easier.

Or click on my user name for email address and send them to me and i could post them.
Other users like Picaso better then Photobucket, theres a " How to use " posted ...

Hello everyone! My name is Rob and I live in Elk River MN. I grew up boating with Glastrons with my dad. He had a GT150, then a GT160, and finally his last one was a CV23 jet drive with the 460. My favorite james bond actor is Roger Moore. I love the fact that those movies used production Glastrons! I came to the 2010 meet at the last minute  :-/ but found that river boating is realy fun! Drove my cv16ss up the river through the lock with my friend who owns a regal, but now wants to sell it to get a Glastron! ;D. And if your wondering... Yes this is Brian's old carlson.

Name is Craig Shrom, I am from Lancaster PA. No i am not Amish lol.

I currently own a 79 CVX-18
Past owned A 73 CV-16 witch I had put all new floor and interior in. plus Outboard. I started out with just the hull.
My brother and I are currently in the process of customizing his CV-16 to a I/O. We did new transom, new stringers and floor, custom build area. Currently in it is a 120hp merc 4cyl. will switch to a 140hp merc sometime. We started this project before we even realized that they have already made a I/O cv-16 from factory. But the job is fun to do. and a one off boat when its done. any idea's is welcome. Here are a few pictures of my new boat, old boat and I will get pictures of my brothers boat up too soon

His posts are on here somewhere.

Hello from the Great White North... well, almost.
My name is Elliott Olson and I live near Warroad, MN by Lake of the Woods.

My first boat (20 years ago) was an aluminum (pointed, not square bow) duck boat with 3.5hp Sears OB. I couldn't get it running well at all because it has a bent :P intake reed. I did however get to run it around Bemidji with an electric troller and small oars.

About 8 years ago I got a '64 Glastron Skiflite 142 with 40hp electric-shift Evinrude from my brother. The last time we had run it I noticed water coming up the inside of the transom. The keel has a short crack across it and the transom ply is rotting out. just sitting in the water was fine but running at speed pushed water in the crack to defy gravity and waterline level through the transom. I am now splitting the top off the hull to start rebuilding the transom, and I'll also grind into the keel from the top to glass across the keel crack before fixing the outside. I also need to do some checking on the motor because we could never get it up to full speed. I suspect a missing bolt might be losing crankcase vacuum. The Yacht Club trailer is a little big for it but I can live with it.

Can anyone suggest where I might find replacement lenses for the nav light? The red is broken and severely faded. I actually have two housings (I like them and want to keep the style) but only two green and one (used to be)red lenses. Anywhere I've checked so far has said "no longer available".

EDIT: BTW, how far north do any of your get-together's come?

Oh yeah, I was forgetting another boat, a 15' Wizard I hauled from California when I got a camper-conversion van from Grandma and then found another 40hp Evinrude for $100 to put on it. That OB ran fine after a little ignition work.

My old boat shop used to have a box of old spare lenses, I can check to see if they still have them. I've also seen the same light that your boat has for sale on ebay.

The first one, no, the rest, yes. Even just the lens on the last one... OUCH! $$

As another option, I could get by with a clear lens and put a red theatrical lighting gel behind it, or just use red LEDs. Does the USCG require colored lenses or just colored light? maybe I should ask the local USCG.

As long as you've got red and green and they are visible for up to 2 miles then it doesn't matter how the light is created. The lenses just need to be on the correct side - green to starboard, red to port, like they're shown on the ebay listings.

Hello!
My name is Garrett and just bought my first boat. It's a 1967 Skiflite V-142 with a 2002 50 HP Mercury Tracker outboard on the back. Avacado green with a cream racing stripe. I'm living in Roseville, MN while I attend graduate school at the U of M. I'm looking forward to learning all about my "new" Glastron  :)

Does anyone know a good way to fix minor cracks? I have one on the inner gunwale by the throttle.

Thanks,

I'm jealous, I need to rebuild the transom and glass across a transverse keel crack on my '64 Skiflite. I think I also have some ply between the floor and hull that should be replaced. I'll know for sure when I open up the  floor to glass across the keel crack. I'm sure it won't be seaworthy before next summer, if even before the end of fall.

Hi I'm Karen from Alaska.  I just bought a 79 Glastron GT 150.  Hope to polish up the hull this winter and will be looking for advice on how to do so.  It's my first power boat, but it was just too cool a boat to pass up.  Has a 90 hp Mercury motor.  Not sure the year, but old.  Everything works, but some sun fading and will redo the seats this winter. Very excited to own this boat - went waterskiing with it last weekend to try it out.

WELCOME!  I would think that you are our first ever Alaskan member!  LOVE it!  Congrats on the cool GT150!  Keep those pictures coming.  Even though many of us live in Minnesota, the thought of watersking in Alaska gives me shivers.  Funny...

Congratulations on the boat Karen!!

My wife and I are fairly new to this group as well, but I've owned a 1977 GT-150 since the very early 80's and put more piloting hours in it than I should probably admit to! It's been stored now for about 15+ years waiting on a few repairs - but in it's own way it was one of the most fun boats I've ever owned - in fact I'm still getting used to our more recent purchase partially because it's mannerisms are so much different than that GT "spunkyness" I was so familiar with - not that the CVX isn't spunky in it's own way, it certainly is, just in a different manner, if that makes any sense.

You are in for a lot of fun times ahead with that model GT!!!   :)

Welcome to the group Karen! These guys and gals know more about our boats than anyone I've ever met. They can diagnose pretty much anything just based on a description!

I'm originally from Minnesota and my mother still lives there.  Off to head to the lake this weekend.  A beautiful 70 degree weekend predicted for the Valley north of Anchorage.  Will hopefully be able to attach pics of my Rocky Lake speedster in action.  I should be passing through Minneapolis at least once this Sept.  is there a good marine store where I can get advice and materials for polishing up the faded fiberglass?

Welcome!

We would love to see more pictures of your boat in the water out there too. I think a GT150 on the water with mountains in the back ground would make a pretty good picture!!

Hi Karen,

I should go look since I just purchased some yesterday, but I've always had good luck with a boat fiberglass color brightener and then boat polish that you can get at the Fleet Farm stores. I think Star brite is the brand name and they have quite a few different boat cleaning products. I'll try to check and update this a little later. (Just checked and what I purchased yesterday to get ready for next week's event was Star Brite Sea Safe boat wash, Star brite fiberglass color restorer with PTEF, and Star brite presoftened boat wax)

I don't remember if there are "Fleet Farm" or "Farm & Fleet" stores in the Minneapolis area, but those two chains carry much of the same merchandise. There's probably other similar stores that carry those types of products also.

If any others have had problems with these products or know of some better, please jump in, but so far I've had pretty good luck with what I get from Fleet. I used to use rubbing compound for the difficult stuff, but you have to be real careful not to overdue it on the Gelcoat.

I probably should have done this before even commenting, but one super nice thing about this forum and the ClassicGlastron forums that I love is that if you do a search on something like this, the topic has likely come up before with all kinds of helpful advice! And as you've seen, there are many generous (and far more knowledgeable) people who will try to help in any way they can!   :)

Thanks for the posts and advice.  I will definitely be in Minneapolis sometime in September and since my Mom lives downtown will check out your store and get instructions.  I will try and post action photos from this weekend in Alaska.  Will use all of your advice to fix up my boat this winter.  Right now I am just enjoying trying it out. Only a few weekends left for us before it's too cold to boat.  (besides things freeze by October).

I have my "79 Gt 150         tied to the dock.  It appears to be leaking through the stern area soemwhere.  Pumped it out and the water came back to the same level -just the transom area right away.  It looks like someone tried to calk the rubber ring around the boat and did a lousy job.  Was thinking that it may be leaking thru or around that strip on the stern as it seems to sit just under the water when the boat is tied up.  (I did check the drain plug and it seems tight - also water does not run out while the boat is running.  Is this possible? I figure I will figure this out when I take the boat out of the water for the winter in a few weeks.  Thanks.

Pull it out and let it drain and dry out, then put it back in and see if you can find where water leaks are.

Hello from Texas!

Didn't know this site existed, but I'm sure glad it does! Got a small project on my hands and in the search for parts, I stumbled across this place.

I've got a 1986 Carlson Intimidator that's been in my family for a little over 20 years. My dad bought this boat when I was about 10 or 11 and he recently has allowed me to make the necessary repairs to get it back on the water. I guess it's not entirely necessary to say, but I love this boat. It's the one I learned to ski behind, the one that I learned to drive, and now the one that I get to learn how to fix up. Not sure I'll be able to get it back to looking brand new (probably not), but it's already water worthy with the exception of a little trim issue that I'm working on. Got a trim motor and adapter on order, and I really hope they fit properly.

The lower unit went out on it the better part of a decade ago, and in the back of my dad's place it sat for that time. The windshield is history, and it will need some small fiberglass touch ups in the future, but that's about it. I hope to have the trim working again in the next week so that I may be able to take advantage of the end of the boating season before winterizing. We'll be enjoying time out on Lake Dunlap here in New Braunfels, TX...just about the best wakeboarding one could hope for in this area or any other. I'm sure I'll be driving out to Canyon Lake as well, since my kiddos will probably want to do some tubing....not cool on Dunlap.

I got it running again a little over a month ago, and I have to admit, I like just listening to this old engine even it's just sitting in the driveway. lol

Anyways, hello to all....and of course, happy boating!

Hi to all,

I'm a new 'kid in town'. My name is Stefan, 41 years old and live in the Netherlands/Europe. My Glastron is a 1972 V-164 with a VOLVO PENTA AQ130C and a 270 heckdrive. My wife and I have been looking for a good Glastron for almost a year and three months ago we found our current boat; a good barnfind.
The Glastron has been sitting in the barn for more than 30 years and is in good shape. Original gelcoat, no anti-fouling, the upholstery is still pretty good (only two minor cuts) and I'm just missing a few parts; steering wheel inserts, Glastron emblems (the small metal ones) and three interior stickers.
The motor is still good but I will take him out and give him a good tune up.

I hope I will get the boat ready for the summer of 2013 so that we can enjoy the good life on the water.
It is good to know that there are still a lot of enthusiastic Glastron people all over the world.
The problem in Europe is that the availability of parts is pretty dried up; that is why I search the internet (ebay,..) looking for Glastron parts. Not only for me but also for the Glastron community. To preserve and sustain the classic Glastron.

In Mai next year we have our first Glastron get together in Rotterdam/the Netherlands with a total of +/- 30 boats. I'm looking forward to that!
It would be great (only very expensive) if one day we could set up a worldwide Glastron event. I dream on...ok?

Greetings, Stefan

Looking forward to seeing pictures and progress report on your V-164.
Stickers/decals are easy to find, members might have some of them and you could get a local sign shop to make the interior ones.

Hi Brian,

I am a first time Glastron owner.  I grew up with them in Northern North Dakota spending summers on Lake Metigoshi skiing, fishing, and finally driving an old Glastron.  After all of these years away from the Glastron pruduct, I finally had to have one.  lol

I just purchased a 1 owner 1971 v156 w a matching year 65 Merc w trim.  I have had a few boats, from fishing to large cruisers, and know my way around the local lakes and rivers, but couldnt be more excited to finally own something that I grew up with, my first Glastron!!

Its a nice little boat and cant wait to put a shine on her in the Spring.  I am looking forward to learning more about the club.  Please advise.

thks,

Beautiful lake country up there!  I have family all over that state.  Welcome to the club, it would help to know where you're at...but, we have a lot of group outings planned, read up, ask questions!  The 'big' meet is in Red Wing in August, and our kickoff meet is in southern Iowa in June.  Enjoy your boat!

Welcome to the CGOAMN group of Glastron lovers.  Glad that you could pick up a old glastron and live out your younger years.

If you can make one of the meets it would be fun meeting you.  There is a member that lives in Grand Forks (Grinder, screen name) that is going to try to make the Red Wing meet this year.

Hello fellow Glastron Members.
My name is Eugene Alden and I live in Wasilla Alaska. I am married to "the lady who lets me live with her" Vicki for the past 20+ years. We have 5 children from the ages 23 to 14. I have worked in the Telecom industry since I was a kid. I have lived in Alaska since early 70's.  I recently purchased my first and only Intimidator in may of 2012. My dad owned the boat when it was new, when he died it got handed from my mom to my sister. My sister used it for a year or so and parked in outdoor storage where I found it 10 years later. I have always wanted this boat. I went with my dad to pick it up at Montgomery wards marina in Anchorage Alaska. he had a choice between the gold Intimidator or the Gold Scimitar. I can remember pulling up to the store and seeing that boat, it was a Lamborghini made for water. I feel like I paid top dollar for the boat, but the truth is I didn't care what the price was, I wanted my dads boat. I drug the boat home on the original trailer and I began the quest to get her going. I knew this boat was a one of a kind and has a long history along with the other Carlson's. Looking for help and ideas I cam across olered.com and that gentlemen has helped me since the day I decided to pull her apart(Robert). he pointed me this direction and here I am. I hope I can be as much help and inspiration to others as you have been to me. Thank you for the wonderful website and community. I hope to meet others up here in Alaska who share the same enthusiasm for a great American boat the Glastron Carlson.

Hi - I'm Karen - way west of all of you in Anchorage, Alaska.  Never owned a power boat before.  (I own lots of sea kayaks).  bought a lake place, has a lovely dock and just the right size for water skiing  so I went on craigs list and ended up with a 1979 gt-150 by luck knowing nothing about them.  From Minnesota originally so found this site last fall to try and figure out how to shine up the outside and fix the shoebox seam leak.  We may only get 3 months of boating time - the lake is still way frozen --but I intend to be coolest old chick on the lake with my Rocky boat.

I've never put a boat in rocky lake and am anticipating your reply, because that's where I will be heading to get my boat in operating condition again.

Hello!

I'm in Ottertail County, in west-central MN.  I have a '74 SV184 (not completely sure abut the "S") with a 188hp Merc Ford 302 I/O.  Bought it back in '96 after it sat "out to pasture" over the winter in a field on the route I take to work.  I have kept it running right all of these years and our kids have many good memories of the times we had with the old boat.  Other than a slightly faded gel coat and some splits in the drivers upholstry, everything else works top notch.  It has a really efficient stainless steel prop that gets the big boat right out of the water, holds awsome in the turns, and will push mid 40s with the whole crew on board.

I would like to get a better ladder system for the back.  We have always used the top of the drive to step up onto the ladder.  I'm also looking for new ventilation louvers.

New to forum,
PeterJ

Thanks Hyperacme,

Yes, that is the boat I have.  I have the two step ladder.  Problem is getting up to the bottom step.  The only way to do it is off of the drive unit.  I have traction tape on it and instruct people carefully to place their foot across the lower unit.  No climb in issues in 17 years, but it is difficult for guests to master.

I have viewed the CG site several times over the years.

I think SLP has some vents that are designed for snowmobiles that would be very close to the original vent louvers, but I haven't chased down the exact measurements.  I just run the fan alot.

I take some pics when I pull the old boat out and post them!

My name is Kelvin.  I live in West-Central IL.  I have a 77' Carlson 16.5 ft with the 77 Johnson 115 outboard.  I am like the third owner. The boat is basically stock/original with the exception being the original owner (who bought it new and sold it in the late 90's) replaced the floor/carpet/etc... after many years. It still looks original to me (just re-upholstered) from the pictures I have studied. They also added a ski tripod/mounting system that is removable/stowable.  All electronics works except the MPH.

I have loved Glastron's since I was a little kid.  I like the classic speedboat look.  I grew up on the Mississippi (Savanna IL) and have been around water/boating/fishing my entire life.  I consider myself a recreational boater.  I am not a mechanic by any means - but I try to do most easy stuff myself (changing lower unit/power trim fluids, spark plugs, etc...).

My boat runs pretty strong and sounds good.  I have friends who still like to tube and I can throw them all with ease  ;) and have no issue pulling up skiers.  I have a lot at a private lake with horsepower/size restrictions so I was kinda limited in what I could buy.  Bought this boat from a High School buddy - who promised me he would sell it to me before asking anyone else (2 yrs ago) and here I am.  I found the forum when searching for Glastron related stuff.  I have looked at some of your boats and I am supremely envious.

hey,

My names Ian Anderson, I have rescued my families boat from the land of craigslist where it was destined to end up last fall.
shes a 72 cv16 s/s with a cracked block and a cracked head. but after some searching i found a B20 aq130 vovlo penta and am ready to drop it in to restart her heart.  The boat has been in my family since 1971 thanks to my Grampa (Ol Coot) where it lived on warner lake and then made its way up to hayward on big round. It was the first boat i remember riding in and hopefully the last.  I cant think of any shape or style of floating device id rather be on.. (well a good water chair is pretty sweet, but it must have a sturdy beer holder.)  But truthfully I am honored to be in posession of the boat and will be sure to pass it along to my kids one day.

I will see you all on the river when i get a chance ill post up a good pic.

things im looking to learn.
gelcoat oxidization repair
and the horn differences of the boats, some of you have a giant black horn on the bow, mine is non-existant not sure why.

That is a sweet shot of the boat! I also have a CV16SS and love it. HA! Have not heard from Shorty in a while. Miss seeing him. Tell him Jason says hi. The oxidation does not look bad. A good wet sanding should bring it back. SOME TIME we will get a step by step thread going on bringing on the wet sanding and buffing process.

Hi Brian,
I'm an old member but just got updated and have had my boat (62 Jetflite)
for 46 years....That must be some kind of record.  I am looking to sell her
this Spring, complete with Spartan trailer, 68 Merc 35 HP and the boat (red &
white) as I have only been able to take her out a few times each year and it
is time for me to sell her to a good home.  The engine has been tuned and works fine, the lights need to be fixed, but other than that she is a sound boat.  I am
asking $2,500 for her.  Please pass this along to anyone who might be interested.
Thanks

Bill

I live in northern Alberta so our boating community leaves a little to be desired as our lakes are far and few between.
My boat is all original and is pretty cherry , found a real survivor and she still turns heads at the marina,

Howdy! Mike here from hudson wi. I have a 72 GT 140, just purchased a couple weeks ago from my neighbor nick ( search old posts here as he loaded a bunch of pics in 08' when he purchased it)

I live a couple hundred yards from the Croix near the ferry landing. I've been fishing and recreating on this river for 30 plus years, including quite a few years guiding out here. I'm a bit of a boat junkie, my other boat is a Towee skiff, TN made flat bottom with a 15 Merc mounted on a panther fixed jackplate. Runs about 25 with 2 guys and gear, in 6" of water. Will eventually add a 25 jet for shallow water muskie fishing.

We love the 140, despite its diminutive size, runs great on the river, turns heads everywhere we go and gets me and the gal out to enjoy the water, she's not too interested do in fishing but digs boat rides. Looking forward to seeing some other old boats out, if anyone has any questions about the river, or access, beaches etc don't hesitate to ask!

All,

New to this website attaching in honor of my father-in-law's passing, a picture of his GX-150 with my son driving it a number years back.  His cabin in Northern WI. gave our family a lot of wonderful memories.  This one still has less than 100 hrs. on it.  Hoping to perhaps take it to Glastorn events in the future.   Time spent in this area resulted in our two sons (now in their 40's) to love fishing and now participate in Musky tournaments.  They each have Ranger boats. Keep up the good work.  Enjoy reading all the postings.

Regards,
Gus

My name is Mike and I was invited to this group years ago apparently, but never made it over here until I was going through my resto thread and saw the link again.  Someone had reminded me that the group did the river run and it probably had happened already ( it did! ) and I just got my boat on the water for the first time since owing it for 9 years.  It's a V178 with a 125hp Force and though it's not complete, it at the bare minimum runs, is registered and has faired well on her first sea trial.  She ran straight and true, no porpoising and a half an hour of putting it through its paces ate up about 3 gallons of gas!  :P I'm going to have to get used to that!  Usually I can spend half the summer on 6 in my 25hp 14 ft fishing boat....but baby, this ain't no fishing boat!

Yeah, I'm looking forward in participating in a river run, though it's a bit of a trek from Isanti down to where you guys usually boat.  Just have to make sure the hubs are lubed up well and check the tire pressure.  I still have the entire interior and wiring to finish on the boat still.  I'm hoping to get some stuff done over winter, since sewing and such won't stink up the house like fiberglass work and painting does.  Currently working on a new fiberglass dash...just pulled the glass off of the old plastic dash and have started the finishing work, which is going to take a while.

Hello everyone ,

My name is Rock and I am now the proud owner of a CV 23 jet . Yeh ... I am originally from Northern Illinois and am now stuck in Central Florida   :-/  I love old hand laid bass boats and merc towers of power ... Especially when they are combined in one solid unit . So my attraction to Carlsons / Glastrons is real easy. I acquired / rescued this latest project with the drivetrain removed and the hull stripped . Its like getting a puzzle and not having the picture to go by . When I say stripped I mean the top and bottom shells only no stringers, cleats, bulkheads, controls ... nothing . So this will be a ground up full restoration . I hope to be starting with composite stringers and aluminum engine rails ... no wood under the floor with foam dampening where needed. I might even get bold and convert it to an open bow rider  ....  Maybe .

Seeya on the flipside , Rock

Jessie Crane here.  I just registered a couple of weeks ago and have been a boat owner since the week before that! I have never really even driven a boat so I am trembling in fear, anticipation, and excitement. I purchased a '77 SSV77 Glastron with 140 Mercruiser. Right now it is sitting in a friends yard while I am trying to get all my ducks in a row. I want to fix a couple of chips on it, get in winterized and figure out exactly where to store it for now. Oh, and trailer lights need to be worked on and also Craiglist shopping for lifts. So, I have read more info on boats and watched more U Tube  in the last couple of weeks than I knew was even out there. I do own a cabin on Long Lake in Washburn County, Wisconsin, but live in Rochester, MN. Whew! Winter is going to come way to fast.

I just met Brian yesterday and found out about this group.  I do not own a Glastron, but my interest stems from having been an Design Engineer with Larson/Glastron, when the company was purchased and moved to Minnesota.  I worked on many of the newer Glastron projects in the early 90's.  I was fortunate to meet and become friends with Art Carlson, while working on the prototype tunnel hull project in late 1990's.  i am still an engineer with another boat company and am still very interested in the Glastron line. I hope to find and restore one some day.  Anyway, thanks for allowing me into this group.  I'll watch from the sidelines for now, but hope to see some of these boats in person this summer.

Greetings! My name is Dave. I'm 62 yrs old and I'm a first time owner of a boat. I purchased a 1988 Bayliner last week and now I'll be trying to get it ready for launching. I started the engine and it ran beautifully. All the lights and controls work as well. I do have a problem. There's a leak. It appears the motor wasn't raised when the boat was brought in and that resulted in the fiberglass cracking at the lower bolts. How do I repair that?

Hi, my name is Pete. I've owned a few boats in the past but I worked on them more than enjoyed them. I was done with boats until I saw my 1980 Glastron CVX 16. Orange metal flake, shag carpeting, inboard 2.5 Iron Duke motor.  I love this boat. I've had it out a couple of times since I bought it and every time someone has come up to me and asked me about it. That's cool. I live in the Chicago area so there are plenty of rivers to explorer.

Welcome Jeff!

Really, its pretty simple, just call the number listed in our 'Save the Date' thread, if there are hotel rooms left in our block of rooms, you may still get one.  Otherwise, if you're campers, there's tons of room at the campground!  There are other hotel's in the area as well.

Just com'on down, and drive to the marina at Treasure Island and we should be able to help!

Welcome to the forum Jeff !
Hope you can make it to this years event ...

Treasure Island set aside a block of rooms for us, not sure how many are left.

Hi Glastron Classics! Last spring I found a neat ski boat, a 1980 Carlson CVX16. The perfect river runner. I am always happy to trailer out to the water and enjoy it. I find myself on the lookout for a project Carlson on craigslist. One to ride and one to bring back to life. Hope to get to know you fellow enthusiasts...Paul from Eau Claire

 Welcome Paul
Do you run on the Chippewa, we went to Eau Claire to pick up a trailer last month, and as we were going over the Chippewa I wondered if it was good boating.
We spend almost all of our water time on the rivers here in the Twin Cities, but always looking for a great place to go boating with cool people

Same here ...
I know around Durand WI. you see a lot of air boats, assumed it was shallow with wing dam's and sand bars ?
Also few small fishing boats.

Figured I've been around here for a little bit since acquiring our 1st boat last fall and now that the family are hooked on boating don't see myself going anywhere in the near future.

I'm Andy I'm 35 years old and we are based out of Alberta Canada , this is our 1st season as a new boating family.  We have a 1983 Glastron SSV-151 with an 82' Evinrude 90HP out back.   I'm a back yard mechanic who likes & enjoys wrenching in my spare time and workong on my own projects as much as possible.  Other activities we enjoy are Jeeping although the boat like has taken over and out trail jeep is currently sitting idle.  We have 3 jeeps  And currently looking for another Grand Cherokee to replace our 2000 grand Cherokee so we can turn it into a family off road vehicle as the TJ is a little small to haul the whole family around with.

Other than Jeeping and our new found boating hobby.   We enjoy the out doors greatly weather it be spear fishing, or fishing with a rod and reel, Camping, hiking and of course caving and tracking down old abandoned mines and adits in the British Columbia mountains.  We also enjoy snowboarding and spend most of our winters in the mountains of Banff Alberta shredding up the slops.

I have bitter sweet feelings about winter that will be fast approaching.  Will be the end of boating season but over the winter I hope to find the time to redo the interior of our Glastron SSV-151.  Mainly new fabric and have been trying with the idea of changing the seat layout into an L shaped bench with a driver seat.  Have Also been toying with the idea of upgrading our engine to a different powerhead found a company out of Denver Colorado that offers Evinrude V4 powerheads with higher horsepower ratings.

Still have a good 2 months of boating weather so still trying to figure out what the past is for winter wrenching this year.

Look forward to learning from everyone off this forum and maybe one day we will be in a better position to do some traveling and maybe make it out one year for a meet.

Nor can I find any Data Plate on the boat. Can anyone tell me where to find the data plate and if this was a popular boat. Im new here and will post pics of our boat as soon as I can get them on.

Hi. My name is Steve. We have a place on Forest Lake, in Forest Lake, MN. My parents got a brand new 1978 cvx16 when I was 5 years old. We grew up waterskiing and cruising the lake. About 5 years ago we bought a 1977 cvx20 with the original Johnson 200 hp motor. We mainly use it for cruising now, since the kids aren’t as interested in water sports and I had a knee replacement. I’m torn between keeping and selling because we just don’t use it much anymore. On the other hand, I LOVE the boat. Nice to meet you guys and your cool boats!

Hi there, I'm a newbie here, and have been reading through a lot of information on here, which is absolutely amazing.
Middle of last year we purchased a CVX 20 jet, such a cool boat. However I'm not sure what year it is and how to spot the differences 76, 77 or 78?
I'm sure someone can help me out.

Certainly draws a small crowd when launching the boat, then their eyes pop when it fires up.
Thank you again, really appreciate all your knowledge.

Hey everyone, my name is Scott Brown.  I am just shy of 40  :o (when did that happen), I am a transplant to central MN, originally from a small town in SW MO and lived in Tulsa from 01 until December 31 of 2014 when we moved to MN (moving to MN in the winter is NOT a good idea btw).  I grew up on a small farm, hunting and fishing in the fields and ponds I could walk to.  Since moving to MN I have rekindled that love of hunting and fishing with my amazing wife encouraging me the entire time (anything to get me out of her hair lol) I have never owned or even driven a boat, but hopefully the weather holds and I can pick up my first boat in a few days, a 1979 HPV 165.  I have a 7 YO son that can't stop talking about the boat and how many fish we're going to catch now.  Thanks for everything so far.

My names Mel. I have been posting elsewhere on my rebuild of a 1973 v179.I have found this forum extremely helpful. I have had a few boats before but never had to get in to it like on this one.  I also ran a small boat in the US Army at one time. I live in Northern Utah which has weather somewhat like  Minnesota. We often have long winters ( up to nine months and our record low in the mountains was -63 in 1985 )-I live in a mile high mountain valley with several streams and lakes nearby. Camping Fishing and outdoors are a passion and I also gold prospect and rock hound. I also keep a pretty good size garden each year.Im still exploring the forum for hints and ideas when I can. Here is a picture of my home town which I love

After significant efforts and searching, I scored my 1977 T166 and she’s undergoing a complete re-fit.  I’m not hands on with the project due to time constraints and lack of expertise.  However, I’m intimately involved in the project details (ohhh, and paying the bill ;)

Really glad to be on the forum and hope to add value.  Any tips, suggestions on the rebuild- please, please, please feel free to share.

Hello All !

My name is Neil and I live in southern MN near Mankato.

I grew up in Northern MN on the water and my parents had a 1965 Glastron Futura 500 (110hp Mercruser I/O).
My father was very particular that we put the boat on the lift (with cover) and hose off the hull every time we were done for the day.
Before my father died last year he gifted the boat to my son and he now has become a serious Glastron fanatic.

From what we can tell, this boat is quite rare and probably the only one that is all original including the fully adjustable aluminum trailer.  My son has spent a ton of time on this site and insisted that we attend the summer gathering.

We are both looking forward to spending the weekend with fellow Glastron enthusiasts.

Your close to the twin cities. Hope you will be able to attend the glastron meet in August.

Quite often they the summer several people will meet on the river on a Saturday. Most often somebody will post that there going out.

Hey. I am Harby. Since I was 13 I have wanted a glastron Carlson. I have looked for years to find the one that was perfect. Several weeks ago I thought I had found it. This boat was described as perfect and from all the pictures it looked it. So for the first time in my life I bought something from someone I didn’t know and that I hadn’t seen. Needless to say it was not as described. It is a 1973 CV 19 jet with a 455 olds engine. I think the bones are good but I paid too much for a project. Neither the carburetor or distributor are correct and I have ordered new. Compression is good all around so I think I have something to work with. The interior looks good but needs some work to make it right. The gauges are there but don’t work. With all that said I look forward to getting everything fixed and would appreciate any help.

Hey ! Happy to be a new member here from Montreal. Purchased a CV23HT (I think) and looking forward to getting to work on it. Saw some amazing threads on rebuilds but I don't believe I will be taking it that far. Previous owner put a clear coat over the gel with a paint brush so I'll have fun taking care of that and will probably need to reupholster the seat. Haven't started it yet but was winterized properly. Looking forward to the summer!

Hey all,

I'm Jay and I live in Dodge City, Ks.

Just bought my 1st Glastron 1986 HPV 175.
Getting on here to find information on restoration of it.

The previous owners did not take of her, the great thing is the engine has less the 200 hrs.

HEY,my name is Scott I live in the heart of the Adirondack mountains,Saranac Lake.
My home is actually accessible by boat or snowmobile only. I'm 4 miles up the lake on a waterway that is 14 miles long with two sets of locks. My Glastron is a 1986 CVX 18 with a 350 in it 260 horse. I've owned a couple other Glastron thru the years started with a GT 150 with 70 on it had a tri Hull also don't remember the model of that jumped up to a Switzer with a 235 on it then went to a checkmate tri mate ll with a 150, currently have for boats in the water including an airboat. My very first boat I bought when I was 13 had a10 Merc hurricane on that one totally wasted the motor but I do still have the boat which I am currently rebuilding  it is an 11 foot Runabout. IM RETIRED AN JUST HAVING FUN.

Hi folks!

I just picked up my first boat - a 1975 V179 with the Volvo AQ130C inboard/270 outdrive.  No seats, remaining upholstery is a mess, the original gelcoat is tired (needs a reaaaaaaal good polish), and the motor was partially disassembled by the previous owner a year or so ago, but it was $300 and it floats.  I'm partially excited for this project, but wondering if I bought off more than I can chew since in the past 3 days I've been unable to find any rebuild kits for the motor or people willing to work on these boats.  I've registered the thing, but waiting on spending any more money until I find one of those two things.  Hoping to get a classic back out on the water, so any help y'all can offer is welcome!

John (Wichita Falls, TX)

Welcome to the forum John !
Have you tried GLM ?
https://www.glmmarine.com/

Any soft spots in floor ?
Most 40 plus year old Glastron's need floor, transom & stringers.
Title: Re: Let's get to know each other...
Post by: dublinbu on June 11, 2020, 05:54:37 PM
I checked for leaks this morning and thankfully the hull is solid, but I also found 2 soft spots on the floor near the engine.  Unless I find some more economical options to fix the engine, I'll probably be passing the boat off and looking for one in better condition...  :(  I'd love to make this classic run again, but it's looking pretty bad right now.  Finally found one guy who could work on it, but I'd be looking at 2K+ for a rebuild or engine swap.

Welcome John.

Glad you got the itch for an old Glastron. Sounds like you got quite the project. The V179 is not uncommon and pretty easy to find. You can find a pretty nice original one for not much more than $2k so paying for a rebuild is probably not worth it. There is nothing wrong with the Volvo set up other than parts are harder to find and I don’t think you get power trim. The Mercruiser 140 is also offered in those boats. Much easier to find parts. I’d look for something else and now you know what to look for. And bring a screwdriver to poke the transom and check for soft spots as Gregg mentioned. A wet sand and polish will go a long way to bring the finish back.

Hello, All:

Steve here. I live in Chisago City and just picked up a lovely and well-maintained 1974 GT-150 with the original trailer and original Evinrud 70. All were well cared for by the previous owner who bought it from the original owner in 1981. The engine was completely gone over with new pistons, rods, and various other parts in 2016, with very few hours since then. I’ve had it out so far on Prior Lake with my daughter, who couldn’t stop smiling and loved driving it, as well as on the Whitefish Chain, putting in at the Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Cross Lake. Immediate plans are to keep it available for use as long as possible this fall, then do some minor work over the winter to clean up the motor mount.

As you all know, these things are like go-karts for the water, and it’s been fun getting “thumbs up” from other boaters old enough to remember...looking forward to many more years of acting like a kid again!

Hi,
I have recently purchased a GC 537 Metric Series with a Mercrusier 485 and Alpha 1 leg.
It has had a paint job during its 41 years on this planet and lost a few of its decals but all in all, a great boat, I have seen 48mph on the clock but who knows how accruate that is. Working to bring it back to original (if that is even possible).
Any one with info, particualrly any one who worked in the Anaheim factory in 1980/81, if you have any history on these boats I would love to hear from you.

I think they (C537) were only made for two years .. 1981 & 1982.
Look on right side of stern under rub rail for "HIN" the last four digits are year and month built.
I asked John Carlson why the Metric series only lasted for a short time, he wasn't sure but thought it was politics among management.

Good evening from North Carolina, I recently bought a 1974 Glastron CV 16, it needs a complete restoration. I would like to ask for resources for parts, replacement decals, stringer specifications, everything bow to stern. The windshield frame is good. The rub rail is great. I plan on separating the top from the bottom, removing fuel tank. I could go on. Please provide resources and contacts for advice. I?m excited to begin.

Hypeacme, thanks for responding.  I will get more info next week when i am with the boat, but funny enough, there are two of boats in my life.  One is a 89 and the other is a 91 like you said.  I assumed this one was the '91 (picture attached). you can see the Carlson logo on it like the pictures in the brochure.  Based on the brochure, is the Tiel color standard?  any info is greatly appreciated.  I will post more when i am in front of them.  thanks again

About 8 years ago I saw an add for a '78 GT-150 for sale 30 miles Northwest of Rochester.  To be honest, I didn't know if it would float!  It had all the pieces, albiet some of it crumbled in my hands.  Well, the darn thing followed me home!   I've been working on it on and off ever since.  At this point, I'm hopeful it will be on the water Spring 2023!

I'd like to make it to your annual meet next summer:)

Hello All,

New to the forum.  My name is Roger and I'm an automotive engineer from Grand Blanc, MI.  I grew up on a small lake during the hot boat era......Checkmates, open header jet boats.  But always wanted a Glastron Carlson.

Almost 50 years later, I saw an ad on Craigslist for a 1973 CV21, and bought it.  I think the hull and interior will clean up well, but that windshield. Yikes!  Once the basic boat is in good shape, I will tackle the empty motor compartment: old school Olds 455 or a more modern marine powerplant (I already have a 2004 Four Winns with an 8.1L Chevy.....hmmmmm)?  I will no doubt be asking this forum for technical advice and even some opinions!  Finding a mint CV21 nearby would be great for photos and measurements as I restore mine....I'm just north of Detroit.

My automotive background is body structures, exteriors, and interiors, including color and trim engineering.  I'm a licensed mechanical engineer with the state, and a member of the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council), so don't be afraid to pick my brain too.
