Volvo cooling system?
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:46:42 PM »
The swan is my first Volvo and I’m wondering if it can run on muffs like all the mercruisers I’ve had? Started it up for the first time today and it ran sweet.... but the impeller that is mounted on the motor heated up fast and was junk in no time.... I replaced it and filled the cooling system with water thinking it didn’t prime itself and it ran ok but started to heat up again... I then added a flush t just in front of the impeller and tried again. It ran nice and cool this time...  is there something in between the pick up and the impeller that might be slowing or stopping the water from getting to the impeller?

I had to make an adapter on the engine side pickup hose and run the garden hose directly into the water pump.  I could never get it to suck up water and prime it from the outdrive.

Just like Doran said , hook it directly to the inlet side of the water pump . Adjust water as needed.

I believe even the new Volvos have a hose connection inside the boat for running out of the water.

Replace the seal under the water pipe pickup cover located on the steering fork. If the seal is dried out and broken air will leak into the system preventing the water pump from drawing any water up from the drive. There is an O-ring at the lower end of the water tube that should also be replaced but it's a little harder to do.
