Gregg my Saturday is pretty full otherwise I'd come help. Maybe Tonka Jim will bring some of his Bloody Mary mix over to help sooth your nerves a little when you split the deck and hull and your thinking this thing will never get back together! :o.....LOL     No worries with Jeff running the show!

Anyways, try and hurry your project up. I know a guy that needs a new floor and transom in his CVX18 and I need to borrow Jeff!.....LOL

Doran I knew the floor was toast when I bought it. Jeff helped me pull the motor, drive and transom assembly in March. I had suspected transom rot and with everything removed there was no question. Not too bad but no sense putting it back together like it is.

Looks like Gregg has plenty of help this weekend!

Joe

what all the post are about is that it has been a question asked by many people on the use of treated plywood for use in boats.

And the answer on this forum and others has been not to use it. As may epoxy ( yet another debate) will stick to treated wood, with the use of polyster resin it will look like it will stick at first but with very little time you  could grab it and pull it off the treated wood very easily. The treated wood in most cases still contains moisture and maybe some chemicals that does not react with poly very well.

As for wood will leave it at just plywood and let everybody decide for them self what to use.

Hope this will end the fireworks

It was fun to hang out with other "boat people" and work towards getting Gregg water ready, especially after what feels like a long winter. The grinding dust in every orifice of the body is not fun however. My eyes just about sealed shut by the time I got home.

We all had our turn at grinding. I did wear a respirator when I was actually doing the grinding but took it off when not. There was still plenty of that stuff in the air even when nobody was grinding. I've got a killer sore throat. It might be all the smoking too.
Yeah you dont get much fiberglass thru one of the filter tip respirators. Pretty small intake. lol

Went over to Jeff's yesterday (and didn't get lost, thanks iPhone) to pick up a grinder, rivet gun and resin ... Well forgot the resin ...AAARRRGGGH ...
Hope to get fuel tank hooked up, old carpet glue ground out, horn installed, trim on stern, drain plug installed and soak drilled holes in wood with resin I forgot to grab at Jeff's ...
Went with this drain plug, part's guy said Ranger uses them on the boats ...

Got the rub rail cleaned up and "Buckeye 2002ed" last week and some other small stuff done ...

You probably know it's wise to borrow a drilling template from a dealer.  Mount it high enough not to plow water.  Min 3/4" up.  I'm sure you know all this.
About the plug. In our younger days we put the plug on the outside and it rotated and flipped out.
Had to keep on plane to get the water out.  The boat store was open that day, Sat.

Forgot something. Gregg, I noticed on CGOA you had long mounting bolts.  You can put 1" plastic spacers if you can find something. Take a close look at my pics on 1980 cvx.  I think Belwood_laker has a pic of a good jack plate.  Your motor is light and you definitely will get improvement by going back and up with the V in the way  on the CV 16 now.  You want to at least match  David. Your motor dynos out stronger. Your retro is looking impressive.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on May 05, 2013, 10:04:48 PM
I went with two 3/4 pieces of wood sandwiched with fiberglass so bottom motor mount bolts shouldn't be to long any more ...
On the top motor mount I got a T & H transom plate, so should take up some slack in the top motor mount bolt.
I'm gonna raise motor to the second from bottom hole and see what happens, maybe next year I'll look into a jack plate ... Not in the budget this year ...
I'm not a speed demon, I would be happy with 53 mph if it handled nice ...

This will cover the scars from the old Merc clamps and trim cylinder holes ...

The white I ward on mine was "tractor paint" from fleet farm, it was left over from something I did years ago, it stuck just fine to both the new and old glass as it was, no sanding.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: WetRaider on May 06, 2013, 08:24:59 AM
Your paint should stick just fine.  I'd wipe it down, first, just as you thought.  It will have whatever texture is there, the only prep you should need is to create the surface you want to see when the paint dries.

Gregg, maybe some kind of a round rasp file would work. At work they use this to file the welds down on the joints of railings, powered by compressed air:

Dynablade Mini-Dynafile II Abrasive Belt Tool
    .4 hp, 7 Degree Offset, 25,000 RPM, Rear Exhaust, for 1/8"-1/2" W x 12" L (3-13 mm x 305 mm) Belts

Grinder would have to fit between transom and stringer and grind at a 90 degree angle.
Bottom of well is only about six inches.

" Can you drill a hole using a long wooden drill bit from the outside of the boat through the drain plug, at an angle? "
Nope ... Transom drain is angled and to high to angle a screw driver down to knock glass out of drain holes in stringer.

Like this with the 90 degree adapter in center of picture ...

Gregg -
Dremel sells a "wand" attachment.  I had one but have worn it out and haven't replaced it.

My "Pit Crew" stopped by this afternoon ... Jim, Ross and Jason ... Can't thank you guy enough !
Jason brought his engine hoist and Jim brought his dremel tool with wand attachment ...
Every thing went pretty smooth ... except I put the splash well drain in and when the motor squeezed the glass and wood it pop out, so will have to be reset.
Jim's dremel cut through the over lapping fiberglass in bilge drain and trimmed some of the aluminum on the motor plate.
I now have the motor 2 1/2 inches above transom ... Might have gone to high ... LOL

Well Gregg, we have the props that can handle motors raised off the transom, such as your Laser II, and my Ballistic XL and the Quicksilver Hi-Performance 2-blade bronze that is meant to run at 5" off the transom. Watch the water pressure gauge readings and for a strong water discharge. I imagine that there are still things to button up on your boat, but things are coming together.

You used carpet tape? I tried it on the 175. I had 2 brands because I ran out and one worked and the other didnt so I pulled it all up and glued it down. The mess type I got from Menards didnt work too well. The black foam stuff I had laying around was better.

I think it was this stuff, but it was $7 for 75 feet.

Cleaned surfaces with acetone ...
Stuff is like glue, stick it to floor and peel backing off, it not like tape but more like glue with a backing paper ...
Also stapled to wood deck joint.
I cut tape with a scissors and it took some effort with a acetone soaked rag to get it off scissors !

Details, details, details. Looks good Gregg. Have you decided on the steering system yet? I sold my old V-153 to someone who was tired of working on boats. What caught his eye in my ad for the sale of the boat was "turnkey" "needs nothing".  Thats what I thought I was buying with the CVX16. LOL. The fun is the satisfaction of doing a good job, and seeing the finished product. But, this will be my last boat.

Don't wanna cut any more holes in boat ...
I budgeted for it from the start ...

Ross

Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: David CVX-16 on May 18, 2013, 08:49:15 PM
Gregg, is it possible to use a spashwell brace and have the cable connect to the tongue in front of the motor like my system? The hydraulic system sure is nice though. Smoother and easier to turn than the mechanical system.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on May 18, 2013, 09:10:13 PM
That wouldn't work, angles are to much and I would still have a Non - NFB system ...
I would still have the steering torque ...
Should solve two of my problems ...
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: David CVX-16 on May 18, 2013, 09:12:49 PM
Read that the hydraulic system needs a 3 inch hole in the dash. Is that correct and what size hole is now in your dash?
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on May 18, 2013, 09:30:41 PM
Daximus installed one on his CVX17 with very good results ...
Dash has a 5 inch opening for helm ...
Splash well has 3 plus inches of clearance, with motor all the way down on transom, over 6 inches where it sits now ...

Hundreds of problems yet to sort out ... LOL
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: WetRaider on May 18, 2013, 10:14:16 PM
I've got a hydraulic system on mine that I wish I didn't.  At least I think it'd be better off without it.

Never fails, a couple times a year, there is a seal that sits around the steering shaft - the helm piece is the reservoir for the oil, that seal pops out of it's seat and I lose half a quart of power steering fluid all over my flip flops.  Seems to me the guy who put it together kinda rigged it silly at the motor.

Biggest problem I wish I could solve, is that when I tilt that motor into trailering position, it kinks the hose right at the fitting.  I'm just waiting for oil to start squirting out of there one day.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on May 18, 2013, 10:23:44 PM
They have done two updates, one was to fix seal. Might just be seal it self, think it's about $100 though ...

Did you mess around with resin today ?

I did and had some trouble getting it to kick. I know I know, its science. lol
Maybe I had the mixture of acetone to resin not right. I was winging it of course. Added probably twice the hardener initially, then had to add more, then more. It was a small batch but at least 3 times what I needed to bond dowels into old motor holes and coat the inside of the used holes. I think part if it was the temp. It was cool in my shop (61) but I didnt want to open the door and let all that hot humid air in. When I walked outside, my sunglasses fogged up it was so muggy.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on May 19, 2013, 11:09:46 AM
Maybe to cool, should be 65 degrees or more according to Express Composites data sheet ...
Could be old resin, can't remember how long ago you said you got it ...
When we did my transom at Jeff's house every batch kicked in the 10 to 15 min. time frame ..
We were adding hardener with syringe so had to be very close to perfect ratio ..

I did a test batch with out acetone and kicked in the 10 to 15 min. range ...
Should have got epoxy ...
... LOL

Looks great. You have enough space to put the Baystar steering system? I though it needed 32" of space in the splash well. I want to get one on my CVX but that measurement is what has kept me from doing so. Once you drive a boat with hydraulic steering you'll never want anything else.

In all my dealings with Hannay's, it has been top drawer. Joe, the accessories man, several times spent alot of time over the telephone and in person, helping me to choose the best steering system and advising on anti-seizure solutions. When I purchased a non-spill gas tank with a defective nossle, they exchanged the tank and nossle for a new one on the spot. Their showroom and shop are very clean. The employees are involved in fishing and boating, using the products they sell.

While Greggs boat was in one of the local racers stopped by, the boat obviously caught his eye as he mentioned it and if my memory is working I think he said "top shelf"....anyway he felt the boat was very nice and it is.  Thank you Gregg, would be great to see that boat at the store again during St. Anthony Days.......

I agree. I'm not fond of using Scotchlocks and butt connectors so I try to solder everything. I'm a bit far away to help but I think Joe could show you how to do a T tap and Western Union splice. A little rerouting of wires and some soldering and you'll have that "Rats Nest" removed.

On the 1988 Mercury 115 HP, the connections on the motor for the power trim are hooked up wrong. Pushing the down botton trims out the motor, and pushing the up botton trims the motor in.

Gregg, if you put in a bilge pump, you want that spot open. Maybe next year I'll put in a bilge pump. I left out the fiberglas container insert under 1/2 of the back seat to get more room. Always a question of how to use the limited available space in these boats. Need room for tools, extra prop, fenders, life preservers, fuel, food, and anchor. Taking the VRO oil reserve freed up alot of space.

Spent some time at Greggs today cleaning up the rats nest under the dash. Could have done more but not having wire colors that I would have liked to use kind of limited what was done. There were wires under there that changed color 3 times. I just went by the factory harness as to what they were but would have liked to change them to the correct color. Also, there is no uninterrupted power under his dash, unless the key is on. I believe my 163 was like that and added a terminal block to change the order things were getting powered.  Everything works so....
Dash lights are on as long as the key is on and 12V socket is only hot with the key on.

Looking really good !!  You might be me to the water, Gregg, and I've had a year's head start.

I had the color changing wires, too.  Yanked 'em all out, threw them in the trash, ordered a bunch of Ancor Marine Wire in appropriate gauges and colors and made my own harness.
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Rosscoe on June 22, 2013, 06:55:08 AM
Could have easily spent more time under there changing wires back to the correct color codes but only had white, red and black on hand. Speedo light wasn't working either and that was due to it not being grounded. No return wire there at all. Wonder where it went. Still lots of jumpers/daisey chaining off the gauges but that is how it was done in the day and I didn't have a terminal block to use for distribution but really, all that does is move the jumpering from the gauge to the block. Also nothing was/is fused. I did manage to eliminate several butt connectors and scotch locks but not all. At least now, you can follow a wire if there is an issue. New horn installed as well and some wood cut for under splash well.

Gregg, does not seem like anything is the same on the left and right hand side of boats. My V-153 seats were different. Paul had to mark all the wood on the seat bases to make sure. I bet the Glastron factory takes a stock seat base and conforms it to the boat configuration seat by seat. With the different stringers, depths of fiberglass coatings, different carpet depths, there is give and take. We think it is exacting from the factory. Bass and Walleye Boating magazine would test identical boats, but the weight would vary maybe 50 pounds from boat to boat.

Something does not add up. Mine were 100% the same on both sides. The cutout is on the upper part not the base of the seats..... Maybe the old one was modified. I don't see why an outboard version would be different either. Maybe I  just don't understand the problem.

Yea I dont know why they don't mount them over there in the first place. I did move mine in the 175 but its still Starboard. I'm not going for any speed records. This one has plenty of extra weight on it anyways. Toolbox, battery jumper air compressor etc.

Battery tray on drawer glides !?!?  GENIUS !

Yeah but I ended up spending way too much time on that. I ended up having to raise the fuel line, wiring harness, blower hoses and bilge line to get the battery under them. Its very crowded in that area! Also the stern light will not go all the way down now but thats fine. I put some quick disconnects on the light incase I want to remove it but my cover is not "custom" so I dont think it will be a problem.
I also ended up mounting that jump seat on hinges so the battery could be accessed without unbolting it from the floor. Turned into a much bigger job, just to move the battery out of the bilge area.

Time is a good thing to spend on your own projects ... it's done & awesome ... and it didn't cost you a ton of money, either.  That is one idea I will certainly copy whenever I do another.  I'll budget for the time - looks worth it.

I've got my battery down inside one of those Attwood battery boxes.  I can just BARELY get the top on when the box is in place.  The main battery disconnect switch has been good to me.  Before that, even in my last boat, I would need access to the battery so I could take the wing nut off the ground wire and pull it free as part of my routine when pulling out of the lake and rigging to the trailer.  Seemed like every time I forgot, I also forgot the radio, or lights, or something else that drained my battery and it was dead the next time I wanted to go out.

Thanks Steve .. I didn't know that ...

Got all SS hardware to put seats back together, mounting plates painted, boxes bottom & top edge sealed with resin/acetone, etc. etc.
Burlwood vinyl should be here Monday.
The 3M resin is very hard to work with ... Had to use 4 times the amount of MEKP the instruction state, and even then it set up tacky ...
I'm going to Express tomorrow and getting resin, measuring cups & syringe to do the glassing around seat base's inside corners right ...
Seven drops per ounce ain't cutting it !

Any one want a almost full quart of 3M resin and a empty tube of MEKP ?

Needed more supply's so went to Express and talked to Tomas about the 3M resin, he thought it must be old stuff and said I should shake it up and mix it with styrene instead of acetone, then mix it with the recommend amount of MEKP ...
Finished up all the important stuff with the good resin and whipped up a batch of 3M resin and styrene ( 50/50 ) and had a senior moment ...
Added 5cc of MEKP instead of 2.5cc ...    HA HA ... Almost burned my hand !   Check out picture of mixing cup ... LOL

Jerry's right ... This stuff is chemistry !  Mixed right, with a syringe it works great !
7 drops from a tube aint' cutting it ... LOL

The battery mounting block didn't come out lookin' so good ... have to rethink it ...
Getting closer to done ...

Looks like a leaker to me.
I have an idea as to how to fix your tray. Either build a small box to replace the 2x4 "U" shaped with the open end towards the existing tray, then cut a piece to enclose the front or stack pieces of plywood replacing the 2x4 and enclose the end as above, OR leave the 2x4 there and enclose the front. Not even you will see it.

Got one side done ...
Only got 8 T nuts, should have got 16 ...
CRS is getting worse every day ...
The burl wood vinyl is kind of stretchy and not as bad as I thought it would be ...
Hope to get the other side done tomorrow ...

That looks really slick, Gregg.
How do you like that vinyl ?
I bought a piece of black plexi for my instrument panel, but I know it will scratch to the max when dust settles on it - had looked at that vinyl, thinking it would go down on the plexi nicely - you might have "talked" me into it with those pictures.

Wow Gregg, all the work is paying off. Looks like your boat is moving down the Glastron/Carlson factory production line with the steering system, carpeting, seats bases, and vinyl covering. Do you have a launch date? I got a season pass at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park (family picnic). A just a few boat trailers in the parking lot on Friday no doubt due to the no wake rule on the St. Croix River. Sad for the owners of the high performance Baja being wiped down in the parking lot.

Gregg
Is that burlwood sticky back or dry?
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on July 07, 2013, 03:10:43 PM
Yes ... Sticky backed ... But not to sticky ... While wrapping seat base, some of the sticky sides touched the other sticky side and thought I was screwed !  But they peeled apart pretty easy.
It's also kind of stretchy so you can get the bubbles out.
I was very happy with it !

I'm worried that Gregg's boat is now faster than mine with the motor raised 2." Thinking I should not let him test my Mercury props. LOL

Gregg, let me know when you want to prop test.

Dave
I'm pretty sure your hull will always be faster and more stable then mine ...
We lost 12 more people at work, so I'll be going to second shift with Fri. & Sat. off ...
Not what I was hoping for ... but at least I got some of the weekend off and can take vacation days on Sunday if needed ...

I'll still need some help getting transom wedge's in ... Any one care to hold a motor while I slip some wedges in ? ... LOL

That sucks! Guess I wont be applying there. At least you're still working.
Transom wedges ???

" Transom wedges Huh? "

To set motor back a half inch so splash well will drain ...
Motor sits up tight against it and it's a plastic drain tube so makes a good seal ...

Bet you're getting excited about trying the boat with the new steering and raised motor.

Did you have to remove the bolts and reseal again? How did you get them in place with the weight of the motor on the transom? Sledge hammer?
Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...
Post by: Hyperacme on July 11, 2013, 09:34:25 PM
Put a block of wood under skag and jacked trailer until weight was on skag/wood, backed off nuts and pulled back on motor enough to get wedge's on two top bolts, then did same to bottom bolts.
Went pretty easy, cept for the climbing in and out of the boat ...
Could only seal bolt on inside of transom, but bolt holes in wood are sealed with resin.
I shouldn't have any issues for at least 30 years ... LOL

Dave did you and Joy get out today ?
Sure was a nice day !

I'm hoping that between the rotted transom, soft floor and rotted rear stringer that was barely connected to transom my handling should improve. The BayStar will be the icing on the cake ...
Bet there will be a few other things to sort out yet ...

Title: Re: CV glassin & grindin' ...

It was a perfect day but Joy and I did not go boating. Instead fixed things around the house.

"a few other things to sort out yet..."  can also be determined by a shake down cruise.  All the planning and fixing and adjusting are fine, but the maiden cruise will turn up something else that needs fixing and adjusting.

Yes, moving the motor higher should eliminate some of the torque forces of the Laser II and the Baystar will eliminate the steering wheel from turning.

I sold the Ballistic 22" XL prop, but I think your Laser II is a better prop.

The 21" and 22" 2-blade bronze props I still have and can be tested.

Ya that's what I'm saying ...  that I'm going to have some other thing to do after first outing ...
Hope I'm wrong ... LOL

When you are ready for the wet "dry run" let me know and we can test it out - White Bear Lake might be ideal for the initial run - no debris and no swift current.

My next project is setting the trim tab to eliminate the torque of the Raker prop. Thinking of mating a bigger fin on the exisitng base.

These pictures are from White Bear Lake the spring of 2012.
