So...got the tank cleaned. Marine Clean + hot water = very clean tank... w/4 leaks! Holy cow. If not for all the varnish on the tank...I could have had some real problems...only thing between me and gas in the bilge was the varnish!
Whew. Its time to ditch the aluminium and get a plastic one. There's quite a bit of corrosion in the metal...something got to it!
Jerry - Would you trust sealing this up? Not sure I do...

There's quite a bit of this:

'lil bit of JB WELD would take care of that Doran. Not sure why you're so fast to pull the trigger on a plastic one? J/K Doran, glad you found it while out of the boat instead of out on the water.
Terry

if you give the dimensions and a photo of the filler location i can check the one in that cobalt the motor is coming out of.
-
Doran... go plastic! think about it... only takes a VERY small piece of ANYTHING to clog a jet or line, create a lean situation, and trash your fresh motor. No warning. Done. Filter it if you want to, but that's temporary, it'll get ya. Plastic! save the powerplant! ;D

Yeah...after seeing the corrosion...I just can't see trusting it. A new plastic one is the only way to go. Its too serious not to.
Plus...$300 to seal the tank, $120 in Gas just to take it and pick it up, I'm $420 in already...probably 1/2 way there (or more) to a new tank.
-
That looks nasty. ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
-
Thanks Jerry.
Joe - here's the tank. Filler location is Port side towards the bow. Dimensions are 81" L x 19" W x 5" D (Max Depth)

Oh man, Doran. Glad that was discovered before having some major issues.
I wouldn't hesitate on the plastic tanks ... if you can find one with the right dimensions. I took a quick look and can't find a below deck tank with your shape that is less than 7.88" deep ...
-
Doran, ya might give Tank ReNu a call and talk to them.
-
From a "chronic do-it-yourselfer" :o
you can buy the KREEM product, it dosent that hard to do. J&P cycles handels it (on a side note i designed and installed the controls for their distribution center)
or have patches welded in if the bad spots are localized (i have been known to do some tig welding) ;D
i will let you what the tank i have looks like on Sunday.
-
I would go with plastic too. Just looks like a custom made tank to me where it will be nearly imppossible to find the correct size tank. I am worried you would need to have a new aluminum tank cutom made to match the old.
I don't know of anyone else that makes the plastic tanks other than Moeller / Tempo and they don't have a direct fit. If you can put in somthing wider you might make something work. http://www.moellermarine.com/aftermarket/fuel_storage_tanks/permanent_tanks/ (http://www.moellermarine.com/aftermarket/fuel_storage_tanks/permanent_tanks/)
-
I'm planning to call Moeller and see what they think. I know they can make almost any shaped tank on the fly based on their manufacturing process. Others have had it done on iboats.
The tank itself cleaned up really nicely. All the varnish is gone and all the debris is washed out, I'd feel very comfortable with putting it back in and running the boat with it.
However, with the corrosion...I'm concerned with weak spots. The one leak appears to have been punctured by one of the pieces of junk that was under the tank. (I found several old rusty screws and other junk sitting under the tank when I pulled it out.)
If all else fails, I'll get the tank lined, and then have the exterior Line-X'd to protect it from any future corrosion and/or damage.
(Lining might prove difficult as I've discovered the tank has baffles in it.)
And if that fails, I'll put a new tank under the bench seat and use the space in the floor for storage...which is exactly how my '96 Glastron was set up.
-
Hey Doran i will check with my brother he made the tank for the 66 out of stainless steel and the machine to bend it. The new tank was perfectly the same size and shape as the old one.
I will put a call into him and ask if you want me too.
Tom

Thanks Tom, I'll keep that in mind if the need arises! Good to know!
-
Looks pretty crappy. Yea, I would think it would be nearly impossible to get another that size.
-
Yep, and the bottom of the tank isn't uniform, it narrows on the bottom from bow to stern.
Didn't get time to talk to Moeller today, gonna try tomorrow.
-
I pulled this tank out yesterday, along with the motor for Brandon and various goodies.
the tank was over half full :), so bonus i filled my V8 explorer (gas hog).
from what i could see through the sending unit opening the inside is shiny and clean, outside looks solid.
the bottom seems to be coated with an oily substance ???
size is 21" (at the top) x 48" x 7 1/2", and its capacity is 28 gal.
if you're interested, and don't think you could make the configuration work as is, i would be willing to move the fittings for you.
-
Bummer Joe. Its too wide & too deep...the tank has to fit between the stringers, and I don't have 21" to play with...20" would work, but not 21".
-
I might be interested in that tank joe, what do you want for it? I should know in a month or so...need to make some more progress on my projects.
-
well... i was gonna say $50, this dude had his for $95 (i refuse to ask inflated CL prices)
but he dropped his price to $25 so i guess 25 it is. his are different size may want to check them out too.

Update on the fuel tank. My only real option was to get the leaks (2) patched up. That's been done, tank has been cleaned out with Marine Clean and I'm pleased to report has no more leaks.
I had the tank completely sealed up on the outside to further protect it against any more corrosion or damage as well:

-
Looks nice, Doran... did you go with RhinoLiner for the tank?
-
Much better now D, no worries for future fuel leaks. Are you planning on an access door/panel ? (Seems like I read something about future access planned.) Hope your weather holds out long enough to finish up any 'glass work you may have. (Sincerely, not being a smart xxx.)
-
Did you take it in or do something to it yourself? Curious about the inside sealing.
-
I ended up doing it myself.
Mark - The CVZ's had removable floor access, so yeah, I'll be putting that back. Its probably a blessing anyway, I'll be able to always make sure air can dry everything out.
-
Ok...got a little free time today. Painted the tank area. I know no one will see it but me, but, I like knowing its painted anyway:

Looks good Doran, are you planning on using any foam or rubber strips or something to "nestle" the tank in?
-

Yes. Underneath the tank were rubber strips for the tank to sit on. I'm going to glue them down and then put the pink foam around the tank to lock it all in place.
-
BTW...got a quote back from Moeller. $3-4k for the mold...then $1k+ for the tank...that was if they agreed to do it.

Gasp...Gasp...Choke....Cough.......I think I better get one more can of Red-Kote to do a second coat on the Phoenix Rising Tank.
Wow! That is pricey!
-
Are ya gonna have them do it so ya have a spare ?
OK ... Maybe NOT !
WOW .... A $5000 tank ...
Bet to have some one weld one up wouldn't be cheap ether ...
BUT not that bad ..
Bilge looks good ...
-
The solution should the tank not work out (I fully expect it will)...but...the fix would an off the shelf tanks hidden under the bench seat or possibly a couple of small ones under the bow seats.
It is what it is...I suppose, I could find junked CVZ-18 as well.
-
I would think you could have someone weld you up another aluminum one also if you still have problems.
-
Finally got by Joe's house on our way home from Lutsen. I now have a spare tank should my in floor tank prove to be unreliable.
Thanks a ton Joe!
A little spring break skiing...was an awesome trip all around!
-
Lutsen is awesome for the Midwest. We were up there this time last year snowboarding. It was 70!

Yeah, we had an awesome ski trip. 1/3 the cost Colorado, 3 hours less drive time, 8 inches of fresh powder. I'd forgotten about the plunge down the Mtn. when returning on the gondola.
-
I am/was an intermediate skier at best and was concerned about how I was going to get down some of those hills after making the trip up. Haven't skied in years and am now afraid of something snapping like a toothpick if I took a fall. I seem to recall being higher then some clouds looking out over lake Superior.
Beautiful place for sure.
Messed up one knee once taking a tumble that eventually led to surgery. When I moved up here almost 14 years ago, I was happy to find I was only a few miles from Wild Mountain. Never made it over there.
Oh this was about gas tanks. :P
-
Its cool Ross!
I am still skiing on some mid-90's Dynastar's that are total pos's. I think they make it harder for me then it should be. I'm hoping to pick up some used shape skis & boots over the summer when prices are low. My stuff is junk right now...but at least I don't have to worry about someone stealing it.
I ski maybe 1x a year now that I'm in Iowa...and that's only at Mt. Kato when we're at Mom's.

True story;
Around 1970 I had a bunch of kids working for me that loved to ski, so I took them and their girlfriends to Buck Hill for an evening of swooshing. I paid for all the lift tickets, I think there were 10 of us. Dottie and I had never skied, so we rented some boots and skis, and headed outside. First off, my feet are not parallel, they point out, so I knew this would be a problem. I asked one of the staff where the “Bunny Hill†was and he pointed to the far right side. There was a tow rope, and while we were standing there looking at this MOUNTAN they call a bunny hill and wondering if we could make it up, let alone down, we watched a young kid come straight down the hill, gaining speed all the way. It was obvious he had no idea how to stop. He flew past us, through the snow fence right into the parking lot with the ski patrol on his heels. We looked at each other, turned around and took the rental stuff back, and spent the evening in the chalet, by the fire. Never tried it again.
-
I never tried triple black diamond "The plunge". I was going to do it a couple years ago on my snowboard, but after seeing it was a CLIFF OF ICE, I turned around....... Glad you manned up to it Doran!
Best part about Lutsen is the views.

Oh, sorry, I used to do 'The Plunge' back in the day. Not this trip, I meant the huge drop off when returning back to the lodge on the Gondola.
-
Good choice Jason, I did a double black diamond in Colorado called "ripsaw" (beaver creek) it was ok until the cliff. I tumbled the whole way down, thankfully I was like 13 so I just found my skies and I was good to go.
-
I knew i had a picture of the plunge!
-
Yep, still looks the same.
I went down it 1x, making tight half 'S's and stopping...took forever. I'd never try it on a board...but I'm sure people do it.
I wish we'd stayed another day or 2, but I'm ready for summer already!
-
Not sure about Lutsen but Afton's ski shop rents high end stuff, not cheap but if ya only go a few times a year it's not a bad deal.
-
Yep, we got a nice spring deal, $950 for 4 nights + all Lift Tickets incl. Andy and I own our equipment, only needed to rent Marissa's skis @$60 for the entire stay.
Really nice deal and we're making plans to go back next year.
