Title: Trip to Tim's Marine
Post by: Rosscoe on August 02, 2013, 07:21:47 AM
We were out and about yesterday and in the neighborhood of Tim's Marine so I decided to stop in there for once and look around. Joe, you'd love this place. Many many outboards, parts etc not to mention all the boats. From the road, I had no idea as to how many he had. When we showed up Tim was working on a motor with two other characters and swearing up a storm. Asked if we could look around and nodded. Later when he was there alone we ended up striking up a conversation with Tim and he's not as crabby as first thought. Part of it is that his hearing isnt so good, so if he doesnt respond, its not necessarily because he is unfriendly. He started pointing out boats that were "his" and supposedly water ready and had some stories. I got a glimpse of a Hydrostream that I thought had been cut up but Tim said this was a factory bass boat?
Don, ever seen anything like this? He says its based on a Viper hull which is certainly looks like and he apparently uses this one? Who knows when the last time that was.
I guess he has customer boats there too and still does some repair. His old shop that burned down in 95 is still standing and I bet not much different then the day it burned. Says he's been there since 85

I went there in search of a replacement spot light with remote cable I need for the 175 and found at least 4 of them however most of the boats are nasty to crawl into and I had shorts on, not to mention poison ivy and wasps so when I go back, I'll dress for it, bring tools and wasp spray. You never know what's lurking under the bows of these things.
I was hoping to maybe pick up a couple of lights so I had spare parts and could make one nice one out of 2 or 3 but he said "those are not 20-30 dollar items. Think its because someone wants them?
He has a fortune in parts there but doesn't know everything he has or as to its condition. Too bad he doesn't have it cataloged.
Another interesting thing we saw was this outboard with a jet conversion on it.
Joni saw a rat run across the area too. Nice. Tim said if he saw it again he would get his shot gun out.  :o
It was fun to look around and I saw some in there I'd like to rescue but I am sure it all of the sudden would be worth a lot. It was an newer style Larson speed boat that had a slight CV look to it. I believe there was one on our GOTD list at one point. Looked pretty complete. Did not take enough pictures. Think I'll be heading up again next friday.
I saw a Hammond in his collection as well. Pretty tough shape.

Tim Olson is a cool old guy, and the Master of the Mercury. You should have seen that place 10 years ago before everyone found it and it got picked over. I actually got a Johnson short driveshaft out of the old shop after the fire.

That is a fun place. Been about 6 years since we were there. Didn't talk to Tim much though.

He mentioned having some Merc XS lower units. Bet they're worth a few bucks.
Yea he is pretty cool once you get to know him a bit. Came off kinda testy at first but once we started talking boats, he came around.
I think I'll be going back up next friday to get my light(s)
He put up another building that is now his new shop.

His wife peeks out the trailer widow sometimes. He also has a large collection of Mercury cars (that will never get fixed)

Hey Ross,

If you happen to come across a 68 gt160 when you go back Travis is in need of a bow cap.

I didn't see any GT160's when I was last there. Think this one has the same cover?

Hydrostream had at least three different Bass boats models. Varmint 17, Hooker 18, and Vantage 20 were all Bass boats.

the bow cap in that tri hull is the same as a gt 160? Yeah I didnt see any 160's or 150's  but there were some I couldn't get to.
Based on the feeling he gave me, he'd probably want 50.00 for that bow cap!

Cap off a blue tri HAUL huh? I'll look for it.

She called out to him "phone call" and he ignored her. lol Blames it on his hearing.

Spent 4 hours at Tims today. I got some parts I want as well as others. I might have him talked into coming down to the meet.

Brandon

Couldn't find that particular boat shown above. I find it hard to believe it was sold or junked but I did get a bow cap and it looks similar to that. I hope it works for what it is needed.
Tell you one thing, Tim thinks some of the parts are worth a lot. I traded him an entire OMC outdrive (thanks Don/Retro) for about 4 parts.

More pics from today.

Lots of "tri HAULS"

More

BTW I asked Tim how many boats he thought he had and he said he counted 400 at one time. Today was our second trip there and saw some we didn't see the first time. A lot of good hulls if someone wanted to do a total resto on the rest of it. He has a some tunnel hulls and some little 6 or 8 footers I think would be a blast.
I also saw a CVX16 today in pretty poor condition. Shot interior, exposed flake etc.

He has TONS of Merc stuff. It is his motor of preference. No pics but I may be going back.

Dontcha just love places like that? Kinda like hallowed ground. If only those boats or cars or trucks or whatever could talk. What stories they could tell ...

I do Doug. I could spend hours there, well we did spend hours there but mostly removing parts and trying to find the boat again after going back to the Montero for more tools.
We brought wasp spray too because those buggers like hanging out in old boats.

I have a prize for Gregg too if he wants it. Looks something like one I have.
Can you guess what it is buddy?

Last time I was at tanners they said some other glastron member asked them to pull a Jetson stern light off an old boat but never came to pick it up.... It's sitting down behind the parts counter waiting.

Well crap! That makes 3.

I'm not telling Joni. She was kneeling in a nasty boat that was on the ground and sloped to the starboard rear side (where the water was) to get this one out. I was trying to avoid having to get in. We ended up sawing one of the bolts off.

Then I can retire early with all the profits ...
