Title: Free Miles per Hour
Post by: Retro Performance on November 19, 2013, 05:39:01 AM
Anybody still running? The cold air adds mph. Now is the time to go for GPS speed records.

The water is cold,.....no docks so we tie to anchors in the shallow water......We will be testing a customers boat today on Owasso.

where are you? I'm trying to find a place to run my new cvx-16 around fargo but all the docks are gone and I don't have anyone to run with me to hold the boat or pull the truck and I'm not swimming today unless I FALL in.

I am in the twin cities......last weekend we still had open water on Minnesota Lake X (Secret test site)......today we were on lake Owasso in Roseville. We will be out again Wednesday. No docks so we just use a concrete anchor and tie each boat up in the shallow water and wade to shore. We do get wet but I keep an old blanket in the boat to cover my legs while running. I have some hope to run Lake X this weekend but will have to see if it is still open.

Now THAT'S hard core Don, guess I'd better go sit in the corner with the light weights.  LOL

It is amazing how much difference the cooler air temp makes in power output, almost like adding a supercharger or something!

Don, I imagine that you have bought up all the private party lakeshore lots around secret Minnesota Lake X to keep your boat and prop testing guarded information from the competition. LOL

Get some chest waders. Won't get wet and wind proof.

I thought about taking mine out one last time, just to get a higher MPH number ...
BUT ... I'm a freeze baby & a wuss ...
...LOL

Did you get some good numbers out of them Don ?

I'm searching Google maps now ... Looking for MN. Lake X ....

Don paid Google Maps bigggggggggggg money to keep secret Minnesota Lake X off their maps. Also, any guests of Don's to the lake are blindfolded at the start of the trip out of the Twin Cities. LOL

We only have 10000 lakes in MN.
Shouldn't be that hard to find ...
LOL

You can't do that. That will just add more weight!

Don's boats are disguised as Bayliners as they circle around secret Minnesota Lake X. LOL

Dave ...
That's a two days BAN from the forum for using the "B" word !
Now go stand in the corner and think about what you've just done/said ...

Now let that be a lesson to everyone ...
We will not put up with that language on this forum !

... LOL

From the pictures Don's posted, he already has given us too much information to identify it. Secret Lake X has trees and cabins around it. LOL.

Secret Lake X?... hmmm, sounds like a place ole Carl Keikhafer would have used to test Mercury outboards back in the day... where is my book "Iron Fist".

"Lake X is real! It is located about 10 miles to the east of Saint Cloud, Florida. It is a private lake. All the surrounding property is owned by Mercury Marine. They do have a large test facility there. They do alot of work on racing boats at the facility. It is fenced and guarded. I have been there once, and it is quite a facility. The entire place is focused on testing and development."

No more Lake X

We do not use waders, it may sound crazy but part of the fun is walking in the water. On Minnesota Lake X we keep a fire going on shore to warm up. We plan to run on Owasso this am before the snow gets here. David, those are inflatable cabins and trees used to help disguise the lake. LOL

I should have known you would do something like that Don. Some people will do anything to leave the competition in their dust (or wake).

That's a cool picture !
Kind of cool & cold at the same time ... LOL

How fast is the Missile and what size (HP) is the Johnson ?

" David, those are inflatable cabins and trees used to help disguise the lake."

That's cheating Don !

We will have to put a GPS tracking chip on Don's Dodge truck at Hannay's.

A lil more Merc trivia: They ran a test facility in Placida for many years, near the bridge to Boca Grande. Boats went out first thing in the morning & ran all day long in the Gulf. If the Gulf was too rough they headed east into Charlotte Harbor. Boats were almost always yellow but they did have a couple dark red ones. The place sustained moderate damage from Hurricane Charly in '04 and never reopened.

They still operate a small facility on Manasota Key. Though it's purty boring really. All's they do is hang stuff in the sun & wait for the paint to peel. And soak stuff in saltwater'n wait for it to corrode. WooHoo! There is a "Hustler" hull that's been sitting there for at least 15 yrs but that's bout the only exciting thing about the joint.

I did see a pair of yellow Merc test boats at Stump Pass Marina awhile back, yet I've never seen one on the water. Going over there to bid a job tomorrow so I'll bring my camera & see if'n they're still there.

I ran the Missile in a few different set ups..........These hulls are likely to blow over when run much over 70 mph......early design tunnels with a bit too much air entrapment. The motor in the Owasso photo is a 135 warmed up a bit. Had a lot of fun with this hull, I built my own carbon fiber parts (see dash) for it during reconstruction and Mrs. Retro did the upholstery (original frames and style)......sold the boat when we retired and it now resides in Florida. I do still have two of the engines................Oh, lets just say I think it would have been possible to blow it over with at least two of the set ups.

You blew my disguise.

Lake X is so secret that the county in Minnesota does not know it exists and Don pays no real estate taxes.

Well the lake is frozen and I am looking to make some holiday cash so....... Heres how it works, bring your boat, we "launch" you into the test tank.....you run for 15 minutes for 30 bucks.....for a two dollar tip I will mist you with a spray bottle as well. I raise and lower the bow with the fork lift while you are running. LOL

Gregg......We are loaded up and ready to hit the river Monday....If the cold air=MPH thing is true we should be running right around 200 mph.......will you be able to head out?  If you can do not forget a blanket to put on your legs after you wade out to your boat.
