Are they really that different in size? From what I remember seeing them parked next to each other on the beach they didn't seem that different (other than the obvious length), but this picture from tonkapaparazzi seems to show a decent size difference. Maybe it's perspective?

Yes there is a large difference in beam between them, as well as the length. The seats in the 16 are smaller, so in proportion just sitting there they look about the same, but the 18 spreads out wider. At medium speeds the sharper v on the 16 makes for a smoother ride on rough water.
-
The CVX16 is almost 17 ft so the length difference isn't much but the wider beam of the CVX18 makes a huge difference in interior room. The CVX18 has a wider beam than even the 20' Intimidator.
-
I agree the beam is much wider than a cvx16

I've owned both a CVX16ss & now a CVX-18 and the difference in size is substantial. After loading more than 2 people + waterskiis in the CVX-16 it really started to feel cramped. The 18 also handles choppy water much better. That said the 16 was great on fuel & a little easier to launch/get into the garage.
-
Was fortunate enough to drive one of each @ Red Wing. Liked em both. I'm an OB kinda guy & I travel light so the 16'd suit me just fine. Ya the 18 is roomier and crosses wakes/waves better. (Cuz it's much heavier.) But I prefer small light boats.
The 16 has a "pad", not deep Vee.
-
18 has a pad too, and got to be over (approx) 45mph before it kicks in with trim like another gear. I have 60.7 gps mph with a 21" prop, but took some trial and error to learn to drive it to its potential.
-
The GT150 "Jump Boat" had a pad added. Wish mine did.

Get a bigger motor, work on your's or sometning, it could be running in the 70's, like Jeff's.
Hey Jerry, that GT-150 didn't have a pad, they put a couple "strakes" kinda looking things under it to to keep it from leaning when, it, and after it left the ramp they made for it to make the jump, you Know I wouldn't miss an oppertunity to correct You :D
I Know ... but you'll get over it, you're tuned that way.
-
Jerry, you have a GT150?

Hey Barb, you back in town ?
Beam on the CV-16 is 78 1/4 "I think"
beam on the CV-18 is about 90"
CV-18 with the pad, and about 325 /350hp = about 70mph
CVX-20 "Intimidator" no pad, 350 /370hp 73mph
23ft scimitar, 389cid sbc, 27 pitch PowerTech, 5200 rpm = 78.2 mph

Hot Knots is running mid 60's now.
Barb did build the motor, I just supervised her, got here to do all the dirty work :)
the only thing I done, besides the break-in, was the torque spec's, and a little instruction.

Hi Barb, no GT160 almost the same. when ya look at the jump pic you can see they added something. Call it whatever ya want, I'll call it an add-on-pad. I think it does about the same thing.

The 2x4s screwed into Jame's boat were to keep it level on the ramp. They were not a "pad". A pad's on the bottom of the boat. Where the Vee used to be ...

OK I believe ya.
