CGOAMN.com needs your help! Its free!
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:23:11 PM »
No...this isn't a plea for money.

Our forums are out of date, and for a number of reasons need to be migrated to the newer version.  They cannot be upgraded 'in place'; instead they need to be moved to a new location on the server and then upgraded to the newest version so that going forward we can keep them current.

(If you want all the technical details, see the 'Details' paragraph.)

I have built a test site featuring all the latest & greatest Simple Machines Forums (SMF) has to offer.  I did it on an Iowa domain I own because a) its free and b) I'll never use it except for testing patches for the CGOAMN site.  I needed a place to practice & play that doesn't risk CGOAMN.com.

http://forums.classicglastronia.com

What we need from you:

Register, Login, Use, Use, Use.

** BUT!  THE DATA WILL NOT BE SAVED!  THIS IS A TEST SITE ONLY, IT WILL BE DELETED! **

Continue to use CGOAMN.com for any and all posts as you normally would.  We'd love it if you'd post
the same threads on both forums for a week or 2 or 3...(click Modify on your thread, copy everything, paste over on the test site) :D

Why?

When we upgrade the real site to SMF ver 2.0.2, we can turn registration back on with the added security.  Embedded videos from over 200 sites work, galleries work, added security from a Moderator perspective, forum themes that you can choose individually from, tapatalk mobile site support (is already working), and we'll be able to keep the site current on security updates.

My promise:

This will not happen to the main site until I'm 100% confident it can be done with NO LOSS OF DATA.  I have no intention of risking a good thing, but, we have to get current on our security patches.  I do expect that during the migration things will need to be set to a 'Read Only' mode on the current site until the new one comes up.  (1-2 hour window.)

Details:

1&1 (Our forum hosting company), offers a number of services that are included whenever you register a domain with them.  One of them is called 'Click and Build', which does what it says...Click 'Install SMF Forum software' and it does just that.  However, when it does this, it doesn't grant our service account (ftp id) full rights to the forums software objects that its installed.  Key modules are locked down as (0444) on the Linux box.  Normally, that's good!  However, in this case, that security prevents us from being able to update the SMF software.  We don't own the objects that 1&1 installed and we can't grant access to the modules, therefore, we can't run the updates to change objects we only have 'Read' access to.

So...1&1 can do the updates right?  Nope.  1&1's Click & Build feature is a 1 time only, take it or leave it (forever) install.  They don't support it beyond the initial install, and they won't grant read/write/execute access to our own service account.  Sound silly?  Yep, it is.  I spent 2 hours with 1&1 tech support during the Daytona 500 Fireball/jet dryer incident discussing this with them.  While they agree with me completely, they can't/won't change it.  Their recommendation is to backup the forum & delete it then build SMF ourselves (which I did on the test glastroncarlsonia.com forum site.

Essentially, I'm going to back up the forum directories & database, reinstall the same SMF version 1.1.11 using our service account, (so we own the objects), then put back objects & DB into a new installation.  Then...upgrade that clean install to SMF 2.0.2.

Hey Doran,

I tried to register, and one thing I noticed is that after a single failed register attempt (invalid captcha) my IP was blacklisted as spam and not allowed to try registering again.  I'm a PHP programmer by trade - let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks Mike!  I'll let you know.  SMF is a pretty straight forward piece of software, just had the spammer login threshold set a 1 failed attempt blocked you for 1 hour.  There's actually zero coding with SMF, its all loading packaged scripts that modify the .php files for us...but yeah, we may need you.

I've uninstalled the Avatar Verification package from SMF, seemed to be causing all kinds of havoc for the login.  Should just be agree to the acknowledgement now, entering the security string and answering the 1 challenege question...

Its working for me in the following Win7 browsers: Chrome, Safari, IE7, IE8, Firefox and Opera.  Mac: Safari, Firefox and Opera

Care to try it again?

I tried to register this morning Doran, but "an error occurred".  It said I was a spam address?

*deleted*

(I trust you guys, but if it's a bad idea to post that IP address please delete it from my post!  - I don't know much about these things, obviously.)
