CVX 18 wont stay running
« on: July 06, 2012, 01:23:01 PM »
Had the boat out on the 4th and just left the dock pulling a tube and the boat just quit. Got it back to shore and seemed like it wasnt getting any gas. Poured a little in the carb and it fired right up. Figured it Vapor locked. ran fine the rest of the day but dies a couple times when i was idleing. Me and My brother went out fishing this morning, started right up no problem went crusing around a little tried a few spots. Kept dieing on low idle. When we went to start it and go back in, it would just fire then die, fire and die could not get it to run. Towed it to shore brought it home and changed the fuel filter. still does the same thing. Any Ideas? I am going out now to unhook the fuel line and make sure the the fuel pump is pumping fuel. It seem fuel related but not for sure figured I would ask and see if anyone had this problem. Let me know. Thanks for any Help got a bunch of family and friends coming tomorrow for a day on the lake/Grad party.
I think this has become an addiction.

Tank venting?

Was there any debris in the fuel filter?

When i had a rusty gas tank, rust was getting past my fuel filters and into the carb clogging the carb.

Could be a fuel pump. You could also try to have it drink from a gas can to see if it's a line/tank problem.

Could also be a float bowl problem in the carb. Not letting in enough fuel.

Did you check the fuel tank/lines? The inside of my tank was really rusty and the draw straws had pinholes in them when I checked mine...

Should be all done tomorrow. Just need to get 2 S pipes made for the thru hull Exhaust. Bad news is I found out that the transom is wet when I cut the holes for the exhaust.
Cant wait to see what she does with the new motor.

Hasnt been mentioned here but running non oxygenated fuel can help eliminate alot of fuel issues.  I'm surprised many boaters still seem oblivious to this.

I didn't think oxygenated fuel was dispensed except between maybe October and April ...
I know that growing up in Texas, there was a label on the pumps that gave the date range in which the pumps would dispense oxygenated fuel.
I haven't noticed any oxygenation label up here in the midwest.  Maybe it's all oxygenated, all the time?  Find that hard to believe, though.

Dan - E-10 is dispensed year round here in Iowa.  However, only the 89 octane 'Mid' Grade is E-10.  The 87 & 91 grades are straight gas.  I run all my cars & the boat on 87.  You can tell this for sure by the fact that the 89 grade is always $0.13 cheaper than the 87 grade gas...the exact federal subsidy for E-10 fuels.

Our '06 Kia runs just fine on either.  My '02 Avalanche however loses 2 mpg on E-10, and doesn't run as smoothly.  I run 87 non-oxy on all my cars and the boat.

I've run E-10 in all my fuel injected cars and trucks without problems. The boat has a concoction of 87 (since I cant always find 91 and don't want to risk e-10 in it) lead additive and octane boost since the plaque on the motor says it's suppose to have 91 octane leaded fuel...

Agreed. Anything with a carb run non-oxy. My weed-wacker, chainsaw, and boats all run better without it. In WI, the pumps are required to be labeled if they DO contain ethanol. Most stations in WI have both.

MN keeps it a secret from you (naughty).......unless you look up the list Jerry mentioned.

Doran ... the volvo says it requires a minimum 91 octane, so I go with Shell Premium.  Courtney puts the cheapest in her car, the Altima.  I find that we get slightly better mileage with the 87 octane straight gas, and that between the 87 and E-10 89, we average a total savings of about $0.60 per tank.  I'll fill hers up with 87 when I do it.  I'd keep the ethanol out of a boat engine made 40 years ago ... For a 2006 car, I don't think it'd make any real difference.

Just to put my 2 cents in on this debate. I have run all my vehicles on E-10 and never had an issue.  I did do an experment once with my 99 yukon and ran it for half the summer on striaght 87 gas for a 45 days and then switch back to e-10 for the next 45 days and had no mileage differance. averaged 18 mpg the whole summer. I did this because a friend of mine claimed he got better mileage on straight 87. Any way, I get 18 mpg with the yukon, and on a good day (very little wind) 42 mpg with my 98 olds achieva both running on e-10. but, the only thing I do put 87 in is the boat, period. I should put a lead substitue in with it but I dont.

so went to Midias this afternoon to pick up the boat. And was at the counter to pay when the guys tells me $371.00 (yes american dollars)  I said out loud are u F**kin kidding me you want 400 dollars to make 2 steel tubes 1 foot long. In witch I got back "didn't you agree to the price" I said no do you think i would agree to a price like that. So he goes out into the shop. I wait at the counter with all the other customers. He comes back and says i can reduce the price down to $187 To witch i replied you want $90 dollars apiece for a 8inch pipe with an elbow on each end. I said i figured $50 $100 at the very most 187 is absurd. So he marks it down to 100 I pay the bill and leave. So I get home and take them out of the boat so I can fix them and make them somewhat presentable. Next I notice that the one I brought as an example to show him what i was looking for. He cut in half and used to make one of his. So they wanted 400 and I provided some of the materials. I attached a pics of the horrible attempt at an S pipe.
I now figured out why I never pay anyone to do anything. I try to do most everything myself.
I think this has become an addiction.
