Merc Trim Cylinders Rebuild
« on: September 06, 2012, 10:49:34 AM »
Question for those out there who know their trim cylinders ...

Mercury made two rams with the same part number, one has a 3/4" shaft, the other has a 1" shaft.
Currently on the boat, I have the 3/4" shaft rams.  One of the female threads on the body of the cylinder is stripped and I cannot connect my hoses from the pump to the cylinder.

I have been generously given a pair of rams that need seal kits.  The seal kits, according to Mapleton Marine, are $53 per cylinder.  My seals appear to be in good order, at least for now.  The gift rams have the 1" shaft.  I am wondering if I can remove the 1" shaft/piston/seals, etc. and replace my existing 3/4" shaft/pistons/seals.  On cursory inspection from the outside, it appears the only thing else I'd have to do is use the threaded cap from my 3/4", rather than the threaded cap from the 1" gift rams.

Does anyone know whether the inside of these ram housings are the same, or does the 1" shaft contain a larger piston than the 3/4"?  I don't want to open them up until I have the necessary parts to reassemble.

I would call Allen Tucker, owner of Supreme Marine in Mpls. If he does not know, his mechanic Mike Foner should. Supreme Marine's telephone number is 612-588-3456.
