So I have been working on the boat indirectly for a few weeks. We poured a new 40x16 patio off the back of the house today and as long as they were here...hahahaha.....I had them pour a 21x16 slab on the side of the house where I will be parking my project CVZ18. Have to finish working on the fence this weekend and get the gate finished. I can now bring her home instead of having her parked up at my buddy's shop.

Here is the patio

Here is the new parking pad. Putting a 6' privacy fence up and it will have a 10' gate at the front.

I'll post some more pics during the weekend showing you the progress I have made on the fence.

No, can't do a roof because of building code, to close to the property line, but that is ok. The 10' gate was the challenge. Anyone that has ever had a wooden gate knows that over time, it loses shape and sags. My solution was to get a 10' from Tractor Supply, face it at the top, middle and bottom rails with PT 1x4"s connected with 1 1/4 C straps and then face the gate with the matching 6' slats on the fence. I also purchased a third hinge. Because of the weight, I used a 6x6 for the corner support. These farm gates are very simple but work well. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I built a large wood fence 4 years ago out of green treated and cedar. has a 10' gate. here is how I built mine. Still straight today. I kind of did a lap with my cedar boards. so there are no gaps. This is probably helping to keep the 5' doors straight.

Yes, the guys did an outstanding job with the concrete, very happy with the work. I found the guy on Craigslist, he had about 50 ads on there. Showed up on time to quote the job, been in business for 20 years. He sent me a quote from hi iPad right from the back yard! They showed up on time yesterday morning, worked their butts off and didn't leave any mess behind.

Nice work on that 10' gate, looks good. My challenge is I am building a one piece 10' gate. Once I get it done today I think you guys will be impressed with my design. I am ready to go out and work but I am waiting for the sun to come up.

One piece gate! Can't wait to see the magic behind that!

I derbied that SX4 4 years ago. I thought it would do good with the reliable inline 6, beefy suspension, and tall bumpers but it tore apart worse then anything else I had driven....

The slabs look nice. I am curious...I dont see any posts on one side? Is that side open and you're just trying to hide if from the front?

Also, I know Menards sells a gate kit. I think its made for smaller gates but could be adapted? I think they have a turnbuckle that you can adjust to keep them from sagging.

Check your deed restrictions for the neighborhood ... I believe you might be able to put a roof over if you satisfy both of these conditions: 1) Roof must be free-standing and not permanently or otherwise fastened to your dwelling structure (this is because the easements are often considered utility easements and the city or county utility companies require a "right of way" - should they be required to perform any work, they'll take down fences and put them back up, etc., but they can't do anything to something permanently affixed to the dwelling - insurance and liability reasons), and 2) You must collect and direct rainwater runoff away from your neighbor's property (this is to prevent unnatural erosion because of the runoff from the impermeable ground cover and roof slope - also an insurance and liability reason ... you don't want to be blamed or held responsible for soil washing down a slope over a number of years and some crazy guy blaming the rainwater coming off your roof for making his soil pull away from the basement wall and creating problems for him).

If you really want a roof over it, you should be able to request a "variance" ... submit proper drawings and you're likely to be approved.  Especially if you can make the roof appear to be a "pergola" from the street.

I will have to look deeper into the roof topic, would love to have one. As far as the fence, we are doing the entire back yard but I still need to remove some dirt and do some final grading before I can go much farther. The goal with getting the first 40' in was that we would gain some immediate privacy on that one side and I can get the boat to the house.

Here is where I am at as of this morning. It rained pretty hard last night, and there is a bunch of rain heading in from the west, not sure if I will make any more progress today or at least this morning.

So here is the one piece 10" gate. It is really very simple although it took me a while to think it all up as the right solution. The key to this working is the 6x6 corner post from a support perspective. The gate is a simple 10' galvanized farm gate from Tractor Supply. I purchased a 3rd hinge to add to the support, it opens and closes as smooth as butter. The pins that go in the post are 5 inches long and about 5/8" diameter. As you see, I faced four rows with 1x4 PT wood held on with 1 1/4" conduit C straps, used coated roofing screw to hold it all together. I need to face it now with the matching dog ear slats I am using on the rest of the fence. On the backside of the slats at the top and bottom I am going to attach a strip to keep all the slats nice and straight. I am putting a PT 2x4 at the end where you see the slats run past the metal frame for the keyed gate latch system. To the right of the gate I am closing in also. When it is done, you will never know that it has a farm gate as the foundation and will look like the rest of the fence. Best part, it isn't going to sag.Let me know what you think.

Kicking butt. So you're going to be putting fencing on the gate too. Great way to have a solid gate and add privacy.

Yes, those 4 face boards on the metal gate will get the same 6' slats as the rest of the fence, you will never know the metal farm gate is there. Going to attach them from the front with 16 gauge finishing nails to get them in place and then screw them from the back side to make sure they are firmly secured to the face boards. Didn't want the screw heads showing from the front.

Well here is the almost finished product. Still have to install the locking latch system. By the way, check your local Lowe's these locking latch systems are regularly $71.96, were on clearance yesterday for $7.10....I bough the two remaining ones on the shelf.

Ok, back to the gate. Here are the pictures from today. Came out and works exactly how I planned it in my mind.

The only challenge was to hide hinges somehow to make it nice and clean looking. To open the gate all the way, the gap from the corner post to the first board on the gate was about 4 inches. in the video, keep you eye on the second board in from the left, I hinged that board to the first board on the gate and overlapped it to the corner post board so when the gate opens, it swings itself out of the way. It got dark on me but I will figure a way to put a light spring on it so it will close itself also when I shut the gate.

Here my lovely daughter shows how easy the gate really does swing, it is as smooth as can be. So if any of your need to build a 10' gate that is easy to build, sturdy and won't sag and need constant repairs, now you know how.

Let me know what you think.

Rich that's ingenious! Well Done! The slat that hides the hinge is brilliant!

I've been thinking of doing this for the patio that I built years ago for my boat. The immediate neighbor doesn't care, she grew up around boats and blue boat covers her whole life and thinks the evergreen shrubs I planted around it were a nice touch. I've always kicked around the idea of closing it up more and doing an unattached roof system to get around code issues as well.

Wondering how much the gate/fence ended up costing you?
