3m buffing
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:07:25 PM »
Stop by my neighbors house this evening,  we are set up for another year of supplies.  1500 and 3000 grits plus a few samples of 5000 to follow in the a short time.

So let the buffing parties begin.

He said that the 500 grit is to take place of the rubbing compound and a new formula of buffing/finnishing compound will be out some time.

They have the cart before the horse as the release of the 5000grit before the buffing/finnishing compound is ready.

By the the way Gregg this is for automotive LOL

My ears perk up at the thought of making things shinier.

It will help out on the shine part, but it might make it a little slower in the water. Take your pick.

Some boat owners roughen up the trailing edge of their boat hull. Allison adds a tiny lip. The topside part of the boat I would think would be faster if polished.

Article on waxing the bottom of a boat.

http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/boats_motors/message.html?message_id=158450

"I have been blueprinting and repairing hulls for 20 years. The answer to the question is no wax and 320-400 grit scratches for maximum performance. In boats that run up to 65-70 mph it makes very little difference. In boats that run 100+ waxing can cause serious problems. What happens is the heat created by the speed can cause the wax to melt and ball up and seriously upset the top speed handling of the boat. The most important thing to remember is to keep the pad of the boat clean and without nicks and chips. If you do not want to sand that shiny bottom thats OK. Once in a while get some automotive polishing compound and buff the bottom. This is not wax but will clean impurities out of the gelcoat."

Sounds like we need to get out the 60grit and get after the bottem of your boat.

Will use your 16 as a test project first and then Greggs report to follow.

The important thing is to have no chips or gouges in the bottom. White Bear Boat Works repaired the back of the pad on my CVX-16. Before the repair, it looked like the back of the boat had been dropped on the ground. Also important is to have a very sharp edge at the back to release the water's grip.

Wow, that explains my 2 MPH gain at red wing I think. I had some exposed glass on the bottom along the keel from the old trailer that came with the boat. So I filled it in with some 3m filler and then sanded with 400 grit. Most of the repairs were at the stern of the hull.

Now that I have flake to clean up I'll supply the Bloody Mary's and food for a buffing party. If it ever warms up that is!

Now that the 23 is flipped over I will be addressing this stuff on the bottom of my hull. There was a pretty good hook in the hull and there are a few spots where it sat on the rollers that distorted the bottom and will take some work to remove. I will be running a long straight edge on the bottom to make sure it is all true and flat with nice sharp edges.
I think this has become an addiction.
