New Transom
« on: May 18, 2013, 01:21:05 PM »
I have been surveying what clamps I have in anticipation of glassing in a new transom.   My question is "do you want to get as much pressure as possible for a strong laminate like when you glue wood together or is the goal to just snug it up firmly to the original fiberglass hull?"  I was wondering if it would be possible to clamp it too tight which would compress the chopped strand mat or push the resin out.  I have some U-clamps that have a 12" reach which will get me to the center of the transom and I also made some that have 24" inches of reach by using 48" 2 x 4's and all thread.   And then I can clamp through the bilge drain and splash well drain.   I'm just trying to figure out how much to do because I have been known to go overboard (no pun intended).

When I put the new transom in Phoenix Rising I clamped it in as much as I could. I had resin squeeze out, but I knew there was plenty in there because I coated the inside of the transom, the inside of the wood and soaked the fiberglass after it was installed. here is what I did.

I liked Brandon's clamping - I'll follow something similar the next time I get to do one.
I used fender washers and screws from the outside .... set the transom in place, very wet, started screwing at the bottom - finished at top.  At least in my mind, I felt that squeezing resin out would also squeeze air out ... I wanted the resin oozing when I tightened those screws.

Jeff just used two boards ...As long as all voids are filled and there some pressure, it should be OK ..
As long as it's tabbed to hull, floor and stringers that would be where your strength is, on the hull/transom side your just bonding it to outer hull on back.

Hey Don ... me and the fox is planning a trip to lake of the Ozarks this summer, maybe Fall, thinking about taking the little house boat.  Barb and Kat is up there now for a few days, maybe we could meet up when we get to go.

Ole Red,

You'll have to stop by!   Mark "Cathnedge" has been through here.   My sister's house is a mile away and has a nice big boat ramp and I have a dock with an empty slip floating out in front of the house.   You can look at some of my "junk"....I mean "projects."   Hopefully I will have made some progress on the GT160 by then.   I'm trying to sell my 85HP Johnson off of it before I tear into the boat in a couple of weeks.

September and October at the lake are super.  Warm days, cool nights, and the lake settles down.   All the crazy people disappear after Labor Day.

Might have to if my local shop that does gel and fiberglass repair refuses to work on Fawkes. They have already refused to work on Phoenix Rising when I first got her for a bellows job.

Ole Red,

Cap N Rons is right around the corner but I'm boycotting them because they raised the price of Bud Light to $4!   Hah.   Your 50MPH houseboat will fit right in....you may create a new category.   The pontoons with twin 250HPs are the ones that are really nuts.  If you like fast boats, it's the place to be.
