Seat Time on White Bear Lake
« on: May 31, 2013, 03:33:29 PM »
Launched boat on White Bear Lake today to burn up 15 gallons of storage gas with Sea Foam in it, try out new Teleflex no-feed-back steering system, and try out used 20" pitch Raker prop bought over the winter. The wind was high and there were white caps on the lake. Hugged the South West shore and went back and forth at about 4,000 RPM running about 36-37 MPH. The steering is nice; can take my hands off the steering wheel at all speeds and it will stay put. The boat runs the fastest with the motor tilted up quite high, and that is when the torque under the old steering system is felt. Prop seems good - will test top speed against another 20" Raker later. Stats: 45 top MPH (not trying for top speed with the old gas), 59 miles traveled, 15 gallons of gas. Missed the hail and the rain. Lost my baseball cap three times, but retrieved it - white caps contrast with the dark blue water. The water surprisingly was not cold.

I'm guessing you could probably pull a barge with that prop on your boat David, or three tubes and five water skiers all at once!  Seriously, Glad to see you finally got her back out on the water though.   ;)

It was a temptation to go wide open throttle, but I was determined to go no faster than 4,000 RPM. Cracked the throttle for that satisfying response. Anxious now to try the Quicksilver 22" Lightspeed prop and Don's super secret Lake R (Roseville) props. Also to get out with the Glastron group for some river travel.

If you can take your hands off the wheel and no torque steer, that is very good. I changed the steering system on the V163 about 16 years ago, I thought it was a NFB but I may have opted for the cheaper model. Think I'll look them up.

Ross, the helm cover will say NFB or say it in words in plain sight. Also helm as viewed under the dash is longer to commodate a clutch inside? If it is NFB, you can not move the outboard motor by tryng to turn it from side to side by hand, it must be done with the steering wheel.
