Time for a tune up on the CV-23
« on: July 08, 2015, 09:59:46 AM »
Mike (Plugcheck) and I will be tuning up the 460 tonight.  New plugs, check compression and timing, check for oil leakage at oil pressure sender, new battery and cable.  I thought I saw somewhere that the plug gap was supposed to be .035.  The guy at O'Reilly's said .044 or .045?  I don't listen too well when I'm mentally disagreeing with someone.  Lol.  Any recomendations on plug gap and timing?  Any other hints for performance or fuel efficiency?

seems to me that most spark plug gaps are around .030 to .035. If the people at your oreillys are anything like mine I wouldn't trust what they say one bit, of course I have never done a tune up on a 460 either.

Hope you can get her running and starting better.

Well, it wasn't what I was hoping for but we found the issue, so now I can get it fixed.  We checked compression and found 2 cylinders had 0 compression!  The others were from 40-80.  We had the heads pulled off in an hour and found the intake valves in the dead cylinders were sunk way in.  Several of the others were in bad shape also.  The heads are going to the machine shop Monday and I should have it back together before T.I.  Mo money, mo money.  ::)

It is likely that we will pull the engine over the winter to go through it should the compression not improve drastically by doing the heads.  The cylinder walls have a nearly circular ball home pattern that barely broke the glaze.  Generally this occurs when a diy'r attempts to complete a ring job without performing a complete glaze breaking hone.  The new rings will not seat correctly.  At least with the heads done, we can get it back to firing on 8 cylinders.  Curious to know is anyone has any fresh 460 heads for sale?  Might be cheaper than having these done?

Update: Both heads are cracked, valves were ground, springs were worn out.  I"m looking for a replacement set if anyone has any leads.

Do you have a valve in the water supply line to the motor? If you use it to control your water temp it could have caused your problem.

Update:

I found a pair of rebuilt heads for $130!  They were from an old hot rodder who used to do heads and was cleaning out his shop.  They're the same casting # as mine but with dual springs.  The guy didn't want to crate them up for shipping so I decided to take a road trip out near Denver.  Mike and I left early Saturday and made the 525 mile journey without issue, except trying to eat breakfast at the local truck stop which wasn't open yet at 5 am.  We made it to Mead around 1:00.  We chatted with the guy a short while and he even fired up his 340 Duster for us.  Another uneventful trip back.  We stopped at Quaker Steak in Grand Island for some wings and a beer.  Upon arrival back at Sapp Bros. in Omaha there was police tape around the entire truck stop (Mike's car within).  There was a briefcase left unattended or something like that so it was a bomb scare.  They finally let Mike in to get his car.  After that we regrouped at my house and discussed the plan of attack over a few more beers.  Sunday evening we met at my place and got the engine back together in about 3 hours.  Confident it would start right up with all the new stuff we were sadly disappointed with it not even coming close to firing.  After much head scratching and double checking things Mike realized the engine was turning the wrong direction.  The new starter was standard rotation.  Now I need to locate a counter rotating starter and it should be good to go.  I don't have much free time before T.I. but I'm confident it will be ready.

I was having problems on my 23 starter and there are many choices online you can by. However mine was just a bad solenoid and I bought a new solenoid at the auto parts store and just bolted a new one on my old starter motor.
