Steering - Rack and pinion VS. Rotary
« on: May 14, 2017, 09:13:31 PM »
Hey all, I noticed on the '73 that the steering wheel is a BEAR to turn.. the cable is need of being replaced but also the rack feels like it's worn. Before I get some parts on the way have any of you converted to a rotary style steering? Pros/Cons? Opinions? Thanks in advance!

The cable should have a part number on the end.  Replaced mine in the cvx18 it also was hard to turn replaced with a rack and pinion same that was in there world of difference with new steering cable.

Good! (Sigh of relief) right now the steering is a shade under dangerous. You'll be going straight and turn one way or the other to cut waves and go to turn back and have to really give'r until it the pinion pops and you're able to counter steer. I should just order original and be done with it. But I'm just curious if anyone's tried a rotary style, they claim it's easier steering vs. rack and pinion.

Had the same problem with mine years ago and a new steering cable fixed the problem.

The cable number is about 6 in. from the stern end of the cable . Mine was 11111A17.
These Ride Guide cables are no longer made, you will have to find a NOS one . That 17 ft.
cable is very hard to find. The steering shaft on those racks have a square shaft and the new
style are round shaft.  Some type of adaptor would have to be used for the original wheel to
fit if you change racks. About 100- 150 dollars if you can find a new cable.

Make sure there's room for a rotary behind dash, my fuel gauge was in the way, so only a rack style would work.
