Title: Just the Bow
Post by: Oldfishguy on April 27, 2015, 07:10:10 PM
Odd how this picture turned out today . . . but I kind of like it.

How about some bow shots, a rainbow of colors please!

Warning though, be careful holding your phone over the windshield while scooting down the lake; bad things can happen.  :)

All great shots guys.

I like bow shots. Especially the ones where the perspective is out of the boat like you are floating above the water looking at the bow.

We have some great photographers here; but then again our subjects don't take much dressing up for great bow shots.  What will be fun is watching the pictures show up as ships take to the water in the next few weeks.  Fun, no doubt.

At the moment of lift off.

I would love to be able to do that with my Brittany spaniel Jake, but he would see a bird on the water and would take the plunge.

The dog pictures made me laugh.  Funny how dogs LOVE being in boats; probably about as much as we do.

I washed the pollen off yesterday.  Pretty easy if the boat has a nice coat of wax on and the interior is treated.  I always like taking pics on an overcast day, it seems you can never take a bad pic in the non direct light.

In a sea of dandelions.  Near the water they lead a chemical free life.

Those are awesome!!

20' seas in a rubber boat is terrifying!

The Diamond Lake shot is about as good as it gets.

I love the duck pic.

The Iowa shot looks great. I think I'd run that thru Lightroom and fix the lens distortion. I know I'm nit picking. Not saying it's bad I love it but if it were mine I would change it just slightly.

Could be the degreaser and paint fume combo I was on earlier in the day.

Either bird it is I dig the head reflection in the water. Great lighting. Hey as long as it's not one of those "rats with wings" sea gull or "grass eating pooping machine" Canadian geese it's good to photograph.

Ya, the picture with the Loon was cool. Odd thing, we went out for an evening run and spotted the pair of Loons with two new chicks in tow, pretty common in our twenty plus years on the water. But this Loon is different . . . as we pulled up to the group I killed the engine and glided in to within 50 feet.  The one Loon stayed put with the chicks while the other one came right at me . . . And then it circled us as you see within about twenty feet.  It took a bit to get my old iPhone 4 up and running in camera mode but I did nab a shot or two.  I think THAT Loon was try ing to indimidate us . . . and they did. :)

Lake Monona in Madison and going through the "lock" that connects to Lake Mendota.  Cloudy with some drizzle today and very little boat traffic.

Monona Terrace and the state capitol in the background.

If you are going to be in the area this year or next, lets plan on meeting.  Several good places to put in, some a lot less busy than others and the lakes are "deep" -

Doran, yes it is.  I wanted her to have her own mode of transportation on the lake while giving her some independence and responsibility.  She has taken very well to it and loves boating.  Amy and I had her in the boat five days after she was born and she has spent countless hours in the spotters seat while I practiced for barefoot competitions(back in the day).  She currently is my main driver for skiing and barefooting and we ski together often.  It's great to see her take to the boating lifestyle and share it with her friends. Her GT is exactly like the boat we had as a family growing up, so that's what we looked for as I  and knew she would enjoy it.  Of course I have to take out once in while to make sure everything is in good working order! Hannah turns 13 next year so she's currently in training.

Warning though, be careful holding your phone over the windshield while scooting down the lake; bad things can happen.  :)

That was my first post on this thread, and what followed through the summer . . . A rainbow of colors, no doubt about that! Every picture is awesome,(sexy . . . ya I think so :)) and some are simply spectacular.

The vibrant colors of our vintage machines, and the classic closed bow are from a different era immediately recognizable at just a glance..

All great shots guys.

I like bow shots. Especially the ones where the perspective is out of the boat like you are floating above the water looking at the bow.

It was a great year for boating in many regards: weather, lack of mechanical issues, enjoyment, etc.
I'd take this every summer.  Waxed today from head to toe, and from top to bottom.  Cleaned and covered then tucked into bed.

And, "Now I lay me down to sleep, I . . . "

Odd picture tonight of the dew on the bow.

I might have it figured out.  Under the bow are foam flotation strips.  This foam also is an insulator and retains the heat of the day.  The non insulated areas temperature drops quicker to the dew point and a fine dew forms on the top deck on this very humid evening.

Either that, or the structure is about to collapse around me.  😊

They slept on the deck, because hold was full of supply's, there meals were rotted meat's ,two month old biscuits and algae filled water by end of there trip.
And no internet access !

I carry the gas in two portable 5 gallon tanks on the back seat to put more weight in the back of the boat. The bow tank is empty. But in my quest to set some high speed numbers, I lost track of how fast the gas was being consumed until I lifted the last tank with my hand, and it had about one gallon of gas - time to head directly to the boat launch.

Curious to know the story on the boat in the pics Jason, doesn't resemble a CV 16 or 23 that I'm familiar with you owning.

It's my dads. Super cool boat. Front of bow opens up then a big ladder folds out. It's an outboard but has a cover that goes over top of it. Looks more like an I/O. Windshield flips up (like in the pic) for venting and access over the bow. Has other neat features like horizontal fins on the rear and a special compartment for the Bimini cover. 17' boat and handles great.

Yes that's right Doran.  Amy's customer mentioned it to her the next day.
Fun to see her take advantage of it and she really enjoys boating.

Doran, I should note, we knew she was out in the boat but didn't know she had sent the pic into the local news station.  Thanks to the iPhone we know where she's at on the lake at all times.

Finally ready for our maiden voyage!   ;D    Lake Havasu AZ, is a 45 mile long lake on the Colorado river, with lots of colorful spots, since it's at the South end of the Grand Canyon, and a special attraction of the genuine old London Bridge, originally built in 1831, and moved to the Arizona desert in 1974!

Nice looking Glastron, but I have to clarify the Grand Canyon statement.  Hoover is roughly 160 miles north, and the Grand Canyon ends at the beginning of lake Mead.  Next up from Havasu is Davis Dam forming lake Mohave, then Hoover.   Lake Powell at Glen Canyon is at the beginning of the GC.    Not to say that Havasu is not a gorgeous pond to play on, just bring plenty of sunscreen, Bimini tops are nearly mandated there.   I spent plenty of time at Parker Dam, but never on the water.  Odd dynamic, College kids and retirees, not much in between.  Just an observation, Mike

Thanks for the compliment, Mike!   It took some work to get it ready for the water!   I had to machine some engine parts to get the '73 Ev useable.      Found a new OEM stator for the ignition system on the Greek island of Cypress.   Ok, my geography might be a little off, but the north end of the 45 mile long "pond" (?) has many beautiful canyons that look a lot like the Grand Canyon!   Sorry you never made it onto the water.   You missed a lot.   Havasu City is a thriving city of 56,000 people (more in the summer)!   A boating mecca, and lots of good restaraunts!

At the moment couldn't think of anything better than being in a Glastron Carlson while watching the Navy Blue Angels here on Grand Traverse Bay.  Was pretty rough day for the little 16' but she did great and was very sea worthy.  On the ten miles back to the launch was actually 5 to 6 foot waves at times, would say sea like, lol.

Good to know! I will have to add burntside to the list! We do get on superior every now and again, we have some property on Madeline island, I have always wanted a larger model to feel comfortable to take out to the apostle islands, maybe someday!
