Title: I got a windshield!
Post by: Jerry on March 22, 2012, 05:55:18 PM
Well it took some time. Mainly because I'm a slow learner. I had nothing but pieces to work with so I taped them all together.

Then I made a template or pattern with paper. The hard part was finding 2' wide paper

I laid that on a piece of Acrylic, and cut it out

Well it didn't bend very well even when I heated it up. I tried a second one, but that had checks where I cut it, I was told Acrylic would bend better and Polycarbonate was hard to heat and bend. Well I decided to try it anyway

I tried heating and bending, but it must get to 350 degrees and my "hair dryer" only went to 290, but this stuff cuts like butter, and you can bend it to a right angle cold in a break, so I put some stuff you put windshields in with in the channels,

Stuck it together without pre-bending it, and stuck it together. It should hold when it dryes

My buddy Charles Miller, who has a couple Century's stopped over and got some black goo on his hands. I'm not sure what takes it off I tried everything I had on my hands

Looks good Jerry, is that 1/8" thick polycarbonate?  One person told me to use 3/16", but another said go with 1/8" because you can't bend the thicker stuff without heating?

Lacquer thinner. but if it dries good luck getting it off. Look everywhere and see if it is on the boat that stuff is very hard to get off when it dries.

I've gotten that stuff on my hands too. NASTY. Maybe brake cleaner????? I think I usually just let it wear off over time.

Windshield looks good Jerry!

Looks great Jerry.  That old girl has come a long ways.  Looking forward to seeing it in June.

Oh man, I'm right there with Doug.  I've got packages of all kinds of gloves in random places.

The windshield looks really nice.  Would you expect it to scratch easily?

That's one of the drawbacks with Polycarb, it scratches easy, and he said never use windex. I can tell ya what a little Acetone does. I may have to tint it. LOL

looks Good Jerry, but what happened to the windshield ?  when it left here it was only broke in the middle.
I remember you and I discussed using the 1/8 lexan fot that windshield, because it's so plyable, and you're right, it take's about 350 degree's to be able to form the arcrylic, but about 450 to form the lexan, that's some tough stuff, but it scratches easier than the arcrylic, it's actually softer, kinda funny that it takes more heat to form it, but you can run over it with a bull dozer and not break it.

I used that 3M mediun viscosity sealant when I first put the windshield in my scimitar, the windshield didn't fit properly, stuck up about an inch on each end, I strapped it down, let it seat up about 30 hours, took the straps off and it looked good, but about an hour later, the urethane released and the windshield popped back up on each end, it was easy to remove the windshield, it didn't stick to the arcrylic very good, but it sure did to the fiberglass bed, I cut the urethane out with a sharpened wood chissel, and wd-40, washed the urethane and wd-40 residue off with mek, used industrial grade sillycone to put the windshield back in, let it set about 18 hours before removing the straps and it's still there.  The 3M windshield sealant did not adhere to the Arcrylic like it does glass, and I wiped the arcrylic down with mek before I applyed it to the urethane, I was really disappointed.

WD-40 works well to get it off your hands, but you know I'm a big mek fan, I used it after the wd-40

Mind if I ask how much the Polycarb cost ?

Sticky in the "Windshield section" !

I bought 2 2'X8' pieces of Acrylic at about $26 each. They felt so bad they gave me the polycarb. I think it's around $38. I took it over to show them how well it worked. Actually when it drys that black goo comes off with your thumb nail.

Now it just needs a motor.

Lookin good Jerry! Though Granpappy Jack would say ya got too many guages[sic]. He always said gauges, radios, etc only served to distract the driver ...

My guage package:

I'm with Granpappy, I hate gauges. My 57 Larson has 0 gauges.

The problem is I kept adding crap that needed gauges. Speedo, Tach, Volts, gas. trim, water temp, water pressure, all where I can see them.

To be honest.. When I first saw the pics of that GT 160 with the cut open bow I was pretty sure no one would ever finish that project. But man I have to say that look pretty nice!

Nice work Jerry!
