On August 16th my wife, Nancy, and I plan on leaving Red Wing and heading north on the Mississippi River in our boat and going to the twin cities, traversing all 3 locks, and ending up in downtown Minneapolis.  We hope to leave around 9 am and plan to stop for lunch  somewhere during our trip.  We can bring our own, or, stop at a restaurant as a group to eat.  I'm just putting this out there so people who want to go can try and make arrangements.  I believe it's about 40 miles one way.  I've talked to a few members about doing this and they were interested.

Oh man. That sounds really fun. I wish I could make it but will only make Thursday this year for the meet.

There are two more locks in downtown Mpls and are worth going through but you can't go more than a 1 mile past them as the river gets real shallow. The lock in Redwing and Hastings are really the only two that get barge traffic. I have never seen a barge go through lock and dam #1 (Ford bridge) and only ferry boats in the two in downtown mpls.

St. Anthony falls in Mpls in between the last two locks.

I'm sorry to hear you won't be able to make it Jason.  Are you sure you can't come Friday instead?  It sounds like you know the area very well.  I do have a few questions for you, are there any refueling locations north of Prescott? Restaurants?  A place to stop for a picnic?

I might make Friday after work but won't have time for this trip.

Best place to stop in eat is at Muddy Water's in Prescott. There is a dock you tie up to right where the St. Croix and Mississippi join. Otherwise there is Willies in St. Paul Park but it's not a real nice place.....
Best park or place to stop for a picnic would be Harriet island in downtown St. Paul. Nice free dock to tie up to, beautiful area, and plenty of picnic tables.

There is fuel at just about every marina on your way up. Look in the guide below. This will help you A LOT. Has all the no wake zones, fuel places, channels, ect. I believe you can order a hard copy from the MN DNR website for free also.

Like Jason said there are two more locks after L&D #1 upper and lower st. anthony falls locks. I have also been through them many times and hope to be able to join you this summer. The only obstacle is barge traffic, apparently sometimes you may have to wait a few hours. Checking the lock schedules before hand is a must.

No idea of who is going Joe.  Looks like Brandon and Amber, Sean, Nancy and I.  As far as agenda, stopping to eat along the way is all I have in mind.

Amber and I are in for sure. Since we will be leaving Sunday morning we want to lock through so we can say we have done it. Plus I want to see that beautiful scenery in person that I see so many pictures of on here!

I am planning on going too.  Don't know how far North I'll go, maybe as far as that lunch place, then head back.

I really should get a marine radio I suppose...

From island campground to ford dam is 58 miles, factoring in 2 locks it will probably be a 3 hour trip 1 way. Where were people planning on stopping for lunch?

We might be up for it if my boat is running. Might be too much gas however. It sounds like a great trip!

I dunno how far up I'll go, maybe somewhere for lunch like Hasting, then heading back.  We'll see...I could be talked into a brunch at the Casino too.

Hastings is a couple of miles upstream from Prescott.

Prescott has a dock you can use where as I do not think Hastings does could be wrong.

Most places to eat in Prescott are right on the river.
