Motor cart
« on: November 25, 2015, 07:45:03 PM »
Anyone have any experience with this type of cart? I am looking for a way to be able to move a V8 around in my barn. It has a crushed limestone floor and small casters would sink in. This thing is supposed to be rated for 1400 pounds but I have my doubts. It would probably be a pain to move around in any case but I may try it. I can almost see this being flattened like a pancake.

Nice !

Guys at work have large tool boxes on carts with wheels like that.
BUT ...
There Snap-On and probably cost ten time that ...
I'm sure some of there Battle wagons full of tools weigh about 1500 lbs.

Yes way more money and smaller casters that wouldn't roll in gravel.

Ross, that is the exact cart I used to move my engines into my shop to work on. It's is just a balancing act. Just move slowly and keep one hand on the engine or have Joni help balance it.

i have had 2 of them.  I am a slow learner.  I think you'd be better of with a pneumatic tire 2 wheeler, and some mods to the plate to cradle a V8.

The gravel part is the proverbial wrench in the works.  The cart tires should hold, but the center of gravity would be a bit high.  Could probably make a cart specific to the task with a bit of cutting/welding.  Spread the wheels out and bring the engine lower.

I think I'd build something simple out of wood then bolt on some wheels. Cart should work but yea, high center of gravity.

Here is a pic of what junk yards use for moving engines around. With some wheels it would be perfect.

This is what I use for engines in storage that need to somewhat mobile.  In the surface is really rough, some cheapie harbor freight wheels could be retrofitted.  Cost for this cradle is about $30.00 and can be found at Summit or Jegs.

Thanks for the info. I agree that the center of gravity is going to be high. Ideally, the cart would be closer to the ground with wheels on the outside as opposed it underneath but I'm not equipped to build one out of steel, so I picked up one of the mentioned carts yesterday. I like the wooden support Jason posted. Something like that would make it more stable but it does raise it higher.
I have one of those red motor cradles. As a matter of fact, that's what my 350 is sitting in but like you said, it wouldn't roll on gravel. Its tough enough rolling on concrete. One little grain of sand and it gets stuck!
Like Brandon said, I'll have to be careful moving it around and likely have to have one person pulling and another pushing.

Might be better off putting skis on it when dragging it.

Could use some plywood or similar to roll it into place on the gravel.   Retrofit that cart with some larger casters and some plywood?.   It would make it an all bolt together affair.
