Title: Tim's Intimidator rebuild ...
Post by: Hyperacme on March 12, 2012, 04:49:23 PM
Between yesterday and today I glassed my stringers and transome together,  bedded my transome, bedded my stringers, replaced rotten wood for the rub rail (about 3 feet on each side), replaced the wood backing for the transome tie downs, and tabbed in all the stringers. Might be more All in all, a very productive weekend.

Run on Rathbun?  Love to have a brotha.  if you can bring RTC to Rathbun, I'll try to make Minneapolis so we can make couple of paternal twins.  Looking good.  Just remember OleRed been there done that.  And myself. :-*

Looks great! If yer not planning to put anything under the floor might I recommend you consider 'shoe boxing' the stringers a lil. Might be a pipe dream but I believe it adds lateral stability?

Thats some Nice Work !

I'm curous, because I see the boat is on the trailer, did you check to see if the hull was true, the "hook"  the same on each side, I think the "hook" is just out-side the stringers, I've only seen that in Barb's boat, so I'm no authority.

The black spots on the transom .. were trim tabs installed there ?

I am planning on shoe boxing in the stringers. Hopefully this weekend. Then the floor.
Red, I looked the underside of the transom over pretty good and the only place I could see anything resembling a hook was like you stated, outside the stringers. I'm not one for measuring to the hundredths of an inch but it looks good to me. We will all see how bad I screwed up this spring.

If you are wondering what the h___ that picture is of in the previous post, well that is a 65" paddle fish. The walleye fishing at red wing this year has been great, with the occasional monster (sturgeon, northern, paddles, 30+" walleyes, 20+" sauger). It its really easy for me to get distracted living this close to open water all year round.

Tim does your boat have the round back seats in it like mine? I am picking up a sheet of the bendable plywood tonight for the seat backs and you can only get it in a 4x8 sheet. Let me know if you are going to need some for your seat backs.

Too many buttons

I agree. I am not a fan of the button's either of the early 80's. The pleated round back seats of 77 look cool though.

I love the updated interiors Andy put in his Intimidator and CVX18. Fit the lines of the boat better than what the factory put in. Here's a link to his website. Definitely what I'd love to with mine when the time comes.

Wow, no fans of the buttons out there, huh? I must be the only one! I absolutely LOVE the look, and was very happy to find locals that were capable of reproducing it correctly. I think it only works in the right boat, but classic Glastron/Carlsons are the right boat!  ;D

I thought mine turned out well and complimented the boat, maybe it's just me. It can be seen in this video...

Thanks Steve,  I was wondering if anyone was going to jump in and take up for the buttons,  I like the "old school" look myself, but you are right, they don't fit in with all boats ... just the best one's.  I must say though, it was a time staking effort making, positioning, and stringing up the 124 buttons in the interior of my Scimitar.

I do like the looks, and because of the softer, thicker foam, they are Very comfortable, How ever, if it was not for the "originality" look, that I think I'd like to keep with these two boats, I would prefer the diamond tuff like Barb had put in her Intimidator, simply Gorgeous, less maint, don't  trap water like the buttons do, and comfprtable.

Red,
To answer your other question, yes the boat had smart tabs. Why, I have no idea. They are staying off. And on the seat subject, I don't hate the look of the original buttons, just the maintenance/rot.

Believe it or not I didn't go fishing today. I worked on the Intimidator all day.
Shoe boxed the stringers, tabbed and glassed the transom, fabbed and glassed in a support for a ski eye, cut out the floor, maybe more.

Mmmmm..... Gotta love those buttons!  ;D

seriously though, in a restore/rebuild, it's all a matter of prefference.

Do what makes you happy. The buttons are beautiful, but a maintenance issue and alot of skill to do it right. On the other side, it is original, and have you ever sat in a button seat? The most comfortable out there, for sure.

Doubt that helps...

Today was crap in regards to progress. Carpeted either side of the tank box, noticed that some of the glass supporting the dash area to the deck was split, reglassed those. Hopefully tomorrow will be more productive. I bet no one can tell me why there was so little progress today. I will tell you tomorrow. Think real hard........

Cut the transom out, secured the fuel tank, glassed in the foot board, glassed in the seat bases, and glassed in the motor mounts. Time for the flotation boxes.

The one that threads in from the front side of the bell housing is a pre-alpha cable. The one that threads in from the rear side (drive side) is an Alpha cable. You can still use the newer cable, just need to rethread the hole as per the instructions at the link below. I've done this mod, it works fine.

It wasn't the mercury/mercruiser stuff I used on the 18 this time. It was rustoleum enamel.

Title: Re: Tim's Intimidator rebuild ...
Post by: still_fishin on April 03, 2012, 03:49:19 PM
I ruffed it up some with some sand paper then sprayed the whole thing down with something called blue shower. It gets rid of all the oils and grease on the surface. But don't get it on your new paint cause it will shrivel it on real quick. I'm no expert on painting. I know one of the Shawna use to paint automobiles. I also know he painted his CV-16 drive before the boat show this year, maybe he will chime in.

If you are going to use a spray can enamel I would first wipe down with a good wax and grease remover. Next sand with 220 grit sandpaper and then use a scotch brite for all the hard to reach places (get them all). Take parts off as opposed to taping. Less places for it to start pealing. Again wipe down with wax and grease remover. Prime any bare metal showing with a self etching primer and last spray with the new paint. Paint is all about prep you can spend a million dollars on products and have top of the line everything and it will still look like crap and flake off. Take your time clean and prep everything correct and should look good. All this stuff you should be able to get at local parts store especially if the sell automotive paints and products.
I worked in one shop and one painter's work came out of the paint booth looking perfect and the other guys stuff looked like crap and all needed to be sanded and buffed before it could leave. Same paint, same cars, same paint booth. One just preped his stuff and kept the "environment" clean.
Also Paint and silicone based products do not mix. No spraying cleaning products or WD40 things like that before you paint.
Painted the whole side of a truck once and was Cleaning my Jeep in between coats of paint last coat of clear reacted to the cleaners I was using I had to sand and repaint the whole job.

I have used a few different brands of Wax and grease remover all the big paint manf. have there own PPG DuPont etc I use an after market place that sells parts called Keystone. The have a place in Minneapolis that is where I get all my paint supplies I am pretty sure they are nationwide.

As far as recommending. Most of the paint out there is pretty comparable it is more of preference than anything. I have used alot of different manfactures PPG, Sikkens, Dupont, Sherwin Williams, Martin Seinor, the list goes on. Omni is PPG's ecomony line and I have had good luck with there products. I use there primer and basecoat and clear coat on most of the Auto repairs that I do. Most of what I use I spray out of a paint gun. Not much spray can stuff. Alot of the big manfacturers do offer spray cans for some of there stuff especially basic black or white.

I love your interior Barb. New but still retro, very good idea.

I've never been a friend of buttons.

What are your plans Tim?

No buttons, just don't know what yet. Maybe some of that heat pleated vinyl. I don't know yet. Should have the captains seats done by Friday, then off to my home town for a quote for the interior.
Title: Re: Tim's Intimidator rebuild ...
Post by: Burnin Daylight on April 11, 2012, 04:58:38 PM
Sometimes I wish that I had the round back captains chairs, but seems like I have a little more room in the cockpit with the seats that I have.  I chose to buy current period fiberglass glastron seats and have them covered (1996) when I had my interior redone because I didn't want to face having to rebuild them again as long as I owned it.  Well I am pretty OCD about taking care of it and 16 years later the interior still looks great and I don't have to replace the seats.  My other choice if I had to do it again now would be the pleated vinyl.  I really like that look also.  Great job Tim.  Hope I get to see it sometime.

Imo diamond pleat is the best choice for a CV/CVX. (I wouldn't trade yours for anything Barb.) Followed by press pleat. I'm not a huge fan of buttons either, but they do look good in certain applications.

Keep in mind there are some purty far out textures available nowadays, embossed into smooth vinyl, that are very cool. Morbern makes one called "shock" that looks kinda like carbon fiber, purty neat.

Another thing to consider is you're gonna have to live with your interior for as long as you own the boat. So don't rush into it. Get samples, compare colors & manufacturers, material specifications, etc.

She's coming along nicely Tim. Carry on.
Title: Re: Tim's Intimidator rebuild ...
Post by: still_fishin on April 11, 2012, 05:56:24 PM
Thanks a lot. Now I have even more to think about. All kidding aside, I really don't even know what is available. I haven't decided on a color range. I do know I want it to look period correct. But I am going to look up that carbon fiber looking stuff for fun. At least with my 18 the interior was salvageable. Too many decisions.

Thanks for the compliments.
And Barb, I was planning on Iowa with the intimidator, it all depends on the interior.

I had a guy out to look at mine today said matching the orange color wouldnt be a problem also said he sould probably get it with the pleating if I wanted. He was also figuring about 2800.00 give or take. I have now had Quotes from $800- $2800 to do the interior. I figured doing the seats myself would cut the cost a lot more.

I'll try'n remember to bring a chunk home'n scan it tomorrow. I'm not suggesting one should do his or hers entire interior in it. But I plan to incorporate some of it in the future. Got all kinda pipe dreams for the C500 ...

Yo Sean $2800 is a lil pricey considering you did the bases. I'd bid 13-14 hunnert for a job like yours.

I'm with ya Doug, I like to fell over when George got estimates to cover the interior on that scimitar, three quote's, from $2800 to $2400, and all they had to do was cover the seats, and the two little side panels, I built the seats, bought some new foam, cut to fit, he got it done for the $2200 and it didn't really look professional to me, the cushoins were sewn like square corners, and they were round, left little pimples stickin up, after that I bought an Adler industrial machine, see if me and the Fox can do that kinda work,  we done one job so far, and thats when I realized how much time it takes to do an interior job.  here's a pic of the scimitar, and then the YellowJacket we done.

Hear ya Red. If only I had a magic needle ...  Tell ya what if'n I could walk on water it'd make my job a whole lot easier! But I digress.

Kudos to you'n the Fox. Not bad. Not good, but not bad. Heh heh heh. Looks purty dang good actually!

Yeah I never imagioned one would have to use so much gray matter doing this crap but one does. You can teach a monkey to sew btw. (I've seen video ...) But patterning'n measuring'n tailoring'n dealing with customers is when my brain starts to hurt ...  Incredibly we just celebrated our 8th anniversary!? Woohoo!

Would I do it again I dunno. Would I change anything? Nah ... But I probly aged 20yrs in the past 8. I'd never used a sewing machine in my life before falling into the business. It was a leap of faith. What a long strange trip it's been.

edit. Sorry for the hijack Tim. Sometimes I blather on'n on. I blame it on Ole Red. Boat looks great btw ...

The guy that will do my CVX interior (bench and two buckets) is charging me $550 for new foam and to sew everything up. My material is flat and he will take 1/8" foam and sew in some 3" pleats for the seats. That price is with bases made by me and me providing the material. I've seen his work and it's really good. He's done quite a few street rods around here

Another guy quoted me $1200 for doing everything including building the base structures.

Steve and Garnet? live(d) in Madison, WI and I heard Tim got his "timi" from MI.  So pretty sure it's not the same boat.  Also if memory serves me correct the intimidator you are thinking of was last registered in Florida and it still had FL on the side.

Nope,
I got my intimidator out of grand rapids Ohio.

Progress report,
Adjusted the rear seat so I'm not chewing on my knees if I ever do sit back there. I also fabed up both front seats, final fit all the parts, then screwed and stapled them together. Then I glassed the inside of the back rest and coated the rest in a resin/acetone mix. Also fabed up the side panels to look pretty close to my 18. I made a pattern for the seats Shawn and I made, I know that a few people are interested in a pattern so this week I will try and make ten sets or so. I actually modified mine so they would be under my legs a little father. About 2.5".  The first picture is what Shawns are like, second is mine.

Time for another sanding and buffing party, maybe next weekend, I have it free.

And next weekend might work for a buffing part. I'll buy the beer.

No  da if you bring one will have to find a larger compressor.

Looking a buying a 6" random orbital I believe is the same action as a da.

Have 2 5" but the pads are 6"

What do you have ?

I have a buffing adapter for a DA. It works great in small areas, and I wet sand with 1000 and 1500 on the DA. Hand sanding is so 90's. LOL

I have all 6in and DA (dual Action sander) are basically the same thing as a random orbital. Do you know if the sand paper is Hookit I or Hookit II. I have both pads so I will bring them, they are soft backed so the edge of the sander wont dig into the gel. I also have pads for hand sanding with the 6in paper that I can brig. Do we need a 2nd buffer? or any thing else?

Shaun

I do not have a large compressor what would it take to run your DA's

I do have is 2, 5in elec random orbital sanders.  Bought a new soft pad for one today.

I know the sanding pads are 6in but i think they will work.

The pads are hook and loop.

We got a lot done yesterday and learned some stuff also ...

Jeff neighbor gave us all the stuff needed to get Tim's Timmi "LOOKIN' GOOD".
With all the supplys and guidance from Shawn we preformed a minor miracle on his flake ...
Forgot my camera .. But pictures would not do it justice ...

We did the flake with 1200 and the gel with 1500 ( power wet sanded ) then 3000, then some new 3M Marine Imperial Compound then FI II.
Didn't have enough time to wax, but flake looked like a mirror !
Even the engine cowel came out pretty good ...

My boats next .... LOL

Dropped the boat in the water this afternoon..........for about 5 minutes. Driving out through the harbor I heard some ticking when I turned the wheel. I really wanted to run this boat out. I still don't know how it happened but I turned around and put it on the trailer. No sense in breaking something out on the main channel. Barges don't stop so well. Anyways, I pulled the drive. Found water in the u-joint bellows. Seriously? This stuff is brand new. Then I noticed the u-joint bellows wasn't clamped down any more.  Well I fixed that, actually tightened it up a little more this time.

Back to the ticking. I looked the u-joints over and noticed some fresh marks in an area. Looked at the corresponding area in the bellows and found the little wire that holds the bellows in shape sticking up about an inch. A little twist from a needle nose and I'm in business. Drive is back on and tested. I'm guessing that the u-joint slapping against that wire pushed the boot off. Well, I got that one out if the way, we will see what tomorrow brings. Weather permitting.

when I built the seats for my scimitar I built a wedge 3/4 front side to 1/8 rear to tilt the seats back, monnted between the swivel and the seat, made a noticable difference in comfort, and don't let ya "slide out" so much.

On my CVZ19, they were tilted back a little by adding a couple washers up front where the seat mounts to the pedestal.

Seemed an easy and adjustable way to add a bit of tilt.

The bases that the seats are mounted to have a good amount of slope already in them.

in my five minutes of time on the water I decided I AM NOT doing any sort of water sport behind this boat.

Any suggestions for vinyl color?
I've thought of the obvious blues and whites, but also looked at some darker colors similar to the wood color that is in the boat. More like a oiled leather.

Whites get dirty.
Blues would work if the boat hadn't faded green. Still could work though.
The wood or leather color could get pretty hot I think.
Keep in mind that I'm going with the interior out of a '77 cvx-20.

something in a buckskin leather would probably look good. I looked at the vinyl that is like carbon fiber and it is pretty nice. The white stripe in my seats will be done with it.

I was having problems with my tilt/trim. Would go down fast, up would take way too long. What ever was on those screens/filters was some nasty stuff. I cleaned them offand now our works like a charm now.

Took the boat out down in Winona today with my dad, it started missing once it was up to temp. Not a ton, just enough to be annoying. A full tune up is in its near future. It didn't do it up on plane though. The u-joints were making a lot of noise, actually vibrating though corners. I'm not even talking about sharp corners. Great, more work.........

The good...........dad ran the boat up to 66 today. He told me he doesn't drive his car that fast. Then chuckled.
Don't worry, I actually turned the wheel, stop to stop before beating on it. We herd nothing and felt nothing. I wouldn't have beat on it if there was a Queston of something failing. That is what has me puzzled, why did it start vibrating 15 or so minutes into our fun session? Any thoughts are welcome.
FYI: all new bellows, new gimbal bearing, new u-joints. Probably more......

When I had my boat out a couple weeks ago I had an instance where there was a sudden vibration but it went away after throttling back. The drive and gimbal bearing are only 2 years old so the U-joints are not the problem. I suspect it could be the drive shaft coupler on the flywheel having some wear causing the splined drive shaft to have a little play under certain load conditions. At some point I plan to pull the engine and replace the coupler, I've got one standing by that's in almost new condition.

I'm going to pull the drive yet again, look everything over real good, check the alignment for the hundredth time, then look into the coupler. Most of this stuff I can figure out but it sure is nice knowing you have a group of people in your corner when needed. Right now, is one of those times. Thanks again Rich. I will let you all know if I find anything.

Tim - I have an extra (used) coupler from my box-o-parts you're welcome to try it out and see if you need to get a new one.

I'm assuming you did the 'whack' on the alignment tool to set the gimbal alignment and all that...

Whack?  ???

Thought you guys would like that   ;D

Here are the instructions I followed from the iboats 'Adults Only' sticky.  You give the alignment bar a couple whacks from all angles and it helps to true up and set the gimble to the coupler.  I could get everything lined up on mine, but there was always a little resistance on one side.  Adjusted motor mounts a bit, off again, but only by a little, and I was making small micro adjustments.  Did this, and it set the gimbal, and the bar lined up (even markings on the grease), and the drive slid in like butter.  I just know this helped.  I have no idea if its an issue for you, I was just going through how I mounted everything on mine was all.

I didn't know there was a technical term for that but yes I did do that. I was having the same problems as you, really small adjustments. I'll pull it apart tomorrow and look for any new signs of wear.
Doran, as far a your coupler, I shouldn't need it. I met a guy down at the launch the other day who noticed my boat, asked about it, and mentioned that he recently repowered his work boat and had lots of new in the box mercruiser parts. he said he was going to make a list and to call on Tuesday. He said he sold two gen one complete outdrives for the hundred a piece. I wish I would have met him sooner.

I don't know how many times I've checked this alignment, guessing five times now, but today when I checked it it was off, a lot. Obviously something moved. I dropped the front of the motor down something like two turns. Put it all together, hooked up the hose, started it up, trimmed the drive and turned the wheel stop to stop. I couldn't feel any vibrations or hear anything other then the exhaust. I even put my hand on the upper drive to feel for vibrations. Nothing now. Sweeeeet.

Almost forgot, I also checked to make sure the bearing was seated. It was.

Thanks to all, I'm still going to cross my fingers.
Tim

I've seen that before too, my original 1967 engine had saggin rear mounts. Most of the time that would just make it difficult to install the drive because the rear of the engine would sit lower. I had to prop up the engine with some large flat washers so the shaft would go in. It wouldn't do too much to throw off the engine angle because the engine would be supported by the drive shaft as long as the drive was installed. It would however put excess strain on the shaft and gimbal bearing. Alignment can change if stringers or hull settle, especially if there's a change in the way the hull is supported from underneath.

As far as the vibration goes though the splines in the coupler could be worn thinner because of incorrect or a change in alignment.
Title: Re: Tim's Intimidator rebuild ...
Post by: OleRed on May 08, 2012, 09:29:41 PM
you can not set up a proper alignment with this mis-alignment, with-out shims, but that will create a hard mount, motor noise thru-out the hull, and when this mount failed it caused an immedient vibration, and noise, obvious vibration continually, what fooled me is it failed after "grabbing air" like you did in the video Rich, I would have suspected the port mount to fail, but when I got to thinking about it, both rear mounts are suspect to the same torgue, when the forward mounts are more subject to a torque issue on the port side.
On the 4 and 6 cylinders, the front mount is more critical, a structural failure there can be corrected by re-aligning ... but just for the present.

I still have those_________________,___________,________ vibrations. Though not as bad. Now I'm going to look into all the other possibilities. It makes them a lot more in the water then on the trailer.
I guess the one good thing that came out out of todays run was my get out of jail free card. I smoked a log, darn near tree at around 40. A loud boom and a heck of a thud. No new vibrations but I still figured something bent or broke so I babied it back. Pulled it out to find no sign of the impact. Sweet.

Those same men and women in the upholstery trade, could you please take it easy on me, it is my first.   :D

All kidding aside, let the comments fly, I have thick skin.

So, on to my first interior...........

Rear seat and carpet are unfinished.  Any opinions on a carpet color? I really haven't looked yet.

I would choose a little darker color than the seats. Some warm color that compliments the orange - a darker orange or a brown.

Not a bad job at all, Tim.  I'm sure you've noticed that a "pro" really has to tug and stretch the vinyl into place, where as we amateurs take it a little easy.  It takes experience to know how much stress your seams will hold while trying to shove a seat up into something you've just spent quality time putting together.  We tend to fear ripping something apart because we don't yet know what the vinyl and stitching can handle.  I think the seats look great.  Did you sew the pleats in yourself?  I wouldn't trust myself to stay parallel so many times in a row.

I thought Brandon's carpet looked really nice at the meet here at Rathbun.  I've thought about getting that padded 3/8" rubberized vinyl flooring for mine.  Nonslip, should help quiet down some of the ride, too.  Haven't bothered looking for it in rolls yet, though.

Just got off the phone with Rite Way canvas out of Winona, MN. They said the material was soft touch. It is suppose to be for delicate surfaces like our wind shields. That price is good for anyone else as well.

Don't worry, I've got a list of people I owe rides too. Jeff, Gregg and Shawn are just under my parents.

On to the boat. I know I said I was done working on this thing but I couldn't stand how crappy the steering wheel looked. So I sand blasted it primed it then thought how ugly that black vinyl looked against the rest of the interior. I figured I couldn't make it look any worse so I cut it off. Called a shoe repair shop in town who stated he had never done one before and wasn't interested. Well I've never done one either. I had never done an interior before but managed too make a bunch of vinyl kind of fit some what ok....................any ways, I gave it a shot. Reallywant that hard, just like everything else, it took time. Now, what color to paint the frame?  I'm thinking the powder blue on the outside of the boat.

Tim you have negative prop slip, which is not possible. I'd say your turning more than 4100 RPM. Could be something else though.
