Title: Digital Picture Frame for Art Carlson
Post by: dorelse on February 03, 2013, 10:53:11 PM
This is Red's idea, and the frame is already purchased by the OK group.  I'm going to collect the pictures and get the frame ready for Art.

Red wanted to give something for Art to have in the care center as he is slowly battling dementia. He came up with the great idea of sending him a digital photo frame with all of our pictures so he can see how we all love our boats!

So, here's the guidelines, submit any (1) picture of each Glastron or Carlson boat (so if you have 3 boats, send 3), size 800x600 pixels in .jpg or .bmp format.

Send your photo to:  cgoaia@gmail.com

Here's what we've come up with so far...please do the photo editing yourself as the picture you send me is how it will appear for Art.

A little birdie dropped a suggestion to me that not everyone will be able to do the photo editing.

So...you can send the picture to the same email address above.  If you want something on the photo, let me know, if not, I'll just resize it and load it onto the frame.

I'm also planning to load a couple videos of the meets as well.

Very good idea. I hope his memory isn't too far gone yet.

So can text be added (by someone)? Do you think it would add anything to include the year, model and maybe owner and location?

For those of you that don't know this,  Art's son, John, runs the facility where Art live's now, so you know he in in the best care available, I don't think it's a nursing home, it's more like a senior living center. John told me Art is progressing in the dementia grip, but he still has a pretty good memory of things in the past.

I've talked to John a few times since Art's wife, Barb, passed away, and each time I have talked to him he has expressed
appreciation to the group for staying in touch with Art, and how much it means to him, sending pic's and video links, not just me, there has been a few of us over the last several years talk with him by phone, and couple guy's went by and visited with him, and one from Austrailia, his name slips my mind right now, but he conducted a kind of interview.

Great, great idea!  Thanks for doing this.

Quick question...  I have Glaston's that are not Carlson designs... should I include those?

I think I know what boats that Art designed, the obvious ones, but was wondering about the GT-150... is that his design?   I didn't want to assume... embarrasingly, maybe that should be obvious to me.  Just, some of them don't actually carry his name that I think he probably had a part in.   Sorry.

Mark

EDIT....  ok, I see now where you say Glaston or Carlson above, thanks.

Hoping Red will weigh in on your questions Mark.  I'm sure Art would appreciate lots of photos from the club, I doubt he'd care if he personally designed them?

Also, I'll be including photos from the meets, MN, IA and some videos from both.  I've got an 8GB SD card for the frame so we can put lots of pictures on them.

not doing any research at this moment, just taking a break, but there is a history page on my site, http://www.olered.com/Art_Carlson.html (http://www.olered.com/Art_Carlson.html)   Bob Hammond arranged a meeting with Art in 1969 with an offer to buy out Art and close his shop in Garden Grove California, and making Art head of the new inity, Glastron/Carlson, building a new plant in Anaheim Ca.  Although the main focus at that time was the production of the Italian Molinari race boats, they began making them at the Anaheim plant, other Glastron/Carlson boats were in the build also, and I think Art's first design that really took off as a Glastron/Carlson was the 1970 CV-19.  Anyway, Art and Bob worked side-by-side developing the Glastron/Carlson line of boats, the two were close friends. Bob Hammond told me his self that him and Art have stayed in contact.  I think it was 1973 when Bob Hammond sold out his interest in the Glastron/Carlson line and began the Hammond Boats.

All that to say this,  Art is a boat guy, I believe he would appreciate seeing all of our boats, Glastrons and Carlsons go together from March 1969 until ?  I don't know when Art stepped out of Glastron Carlson line.

I had bought a wifi picture frame for my parents ... you can enter a password to a picasa or kodak gallery and it will show whatever is in the gallery online - so my wife and I can edit from our house - add new pictures of the kids, etc. - and voila, they show up on the frame sitting on mom and dad's shelf ...

Cool gizmos.

Man, there are some cool boats in this group.  I wish I were Oprah rich.

We did talk about that, but those frames take a bump up in price and we weren't sure if he has wifi access in the care facility.  Since his son runs the facility, I can just send out a $5.00 SD card so he can swap them out.

Should work just as well.

I'm not suggesting we pu cakes on the picture frame at all, but just since a couple cakes showed up on this thread, I searched for this picture taken 3 or 4 years ago, it was 4th of July, at a parade we had on the river, the fellows wife built him a cake that looked just like his boat participating in the parade,  I couldn't help but share the pic

I'm sure it will Red.  I'm going to need to remaster them to 800x600 resolution so they'll be small, and playback won't be glitchy.

We just need to make sure he can easily get to all of them, so I'm hoping the frame isn't complicated to operate.

I don't know the first thing about one of those frames, but did you get the one that has the motion sensor, I'll bet John
helps him get some seat time at the controls.

I'm waiing on some more pic's from Gary in St Louis, Mo.  and Bill in California, should be here in a couple days

But, by Art having that frame, and John setting it up for him, if John don't mind, anyone who
wants to could send a compatible card to him for them to watch, and I was also wondering if that frame has sound.

Just keep in mind Jason, that the target is for Art.

If the idea is to turn this into a public video, I won't want my name & city out there for the world (ie every Identify thief in the world) to see.  A little bit of internet anonymity is a good thing.  Why make it easy for them?

Art sitting in the care center, I'm good with.

And btw, the link at the first post IS a slideshow.

I suspect that because this idea for Art is such a good one, that it has some of our creative juices going - and having been a victim of a minor case of identity theft, I can also understand the hesitation of putting your name out in the public view...in fact it came to my mind before I submitted our picture.

It eased my mind while rationalizing to allow our names and city because it was for Art - plus the names and cities are already pretty much out there in the public domain anyway (at least our tax records are around here) - so the only real risk is probably from possible Glastron collectors.   ;)   But as I said, I certainly understand the hesitation and had the same thoughts myself.

There might be some other future possibilities opening up from this though, which is what I think 74GlasCarlSS is eluding to. Maybe some "tweaking", or "enhancement" to our website to keep it "fresh"? I don't want to use the term "improvement" because that might imply there's something wrong with our current site, which I think is actually pretty good (my compliments to the original designers) - but there are sometimes new "additions" or "tweaking" that might keep people coming back to see what's new too.

You might even be "inventing" a marketable product with this "slideshow" and digital picture frame idea concept too - even if only to club members...possibly calendar ideas (club members special editions?) or maybe even a new concept for Alzheimer's patients (pictures of their past put into digital frames - kind of a "digital signage" variation (digital signage has turned into a big business)). Some of these ideas might actually be marketable, if not even patentable, services and items...but maybe I'm dreaming??   :)
Title: Re: Digital Picture Frame for Art Carlson

The flaw to you tax records argument is that currently, an identify thief wouldn't have our name & city to even start with...posting this out there gives them a key starting point, yes they could randomly search them.  If you saw what we've had to do to block IP's from Eastern Europe & China, you'd worry too.

The plan is to lock down/remove the album when we're done.  Its a gift for Art, let's keep the focus there.

No, no I wasn't offended.  I get the enthusiasm and that's good!

I'm just really for spring...and you're right Red had an awesome idea.

I'm happy to put the slideshow together without the name & city for a more public version...we can just call that section 'Member boats' and I'll just remove the names/city and throw it up on youtube as a slideshow/movie.

Ok, I had to delete the online Picasa album, the order of the album wouldn't match how it would appear on the frame.

Moving everything to Photobucket.

Digital Frame is here, looks good, will work on the videos over the next week.  I will not put you or your boat in without your ok to do so...

Friday is the LAST CALL for your boat to make the frame.

I don't mind sharing the finished slideshow directly to folks that want it...its looking really good!

All I mean by that is that I won't put up pictures with name/locations without permission.

Kip, Wex, our fearless leader, Jerry, Grinder, Gary V to name a few...I'm pretty sure they're in the slideshow but not in the 'Member Boats' section with a name & location.

Not trying to be a jerk about it, but I'd like to be asked if it were me, so that's the premise I'm operating under...

Doran I guess I thought you were just looking for people to send you pictures which I can't do as my computer is on the fritz. Just have my IPAD which doesn't have any photos loaded onto it. I am fine with the name/location part of it.

I've got the video figured out.

Jim/anyone wanting to submit a video - if you're still working on your highlights video, I need it in this format.  The width of 720 matters, the height of 576 can be less, but not more.

https://nix.zendesk.com/entries/22012031-How-can-I-play-my-Video-on-a-Digital-Photo-Frame- (https://nix.zendesk.com/entries/22012031-How-can-I-play-my-Video-on-a-Digital-Photo-Frame-)

Video Options:

(THESE ARE THE ONLY SETTINGS YOU CAN USE FOR THE FRAME)

Video Codec:  MPEG4

Frame Size: 720 x 576

Video Bitrate: 768

Video Frame Rate: 25

***All the other settings should be preset, changing them will affect the playback of your video and possibly not play***

If there's something you really want Art to see...now's the time.  Frame will be sent to him on Wednesday.  I've spoken with his son John, and Art is excited to see it, so I want him to have it by next weekend.

I've had that happen for me as well Mark.  They display on my phone & the frame fine, and I'm not sure why Win 7 is doing that to the photos...its random and isn't that way when I resized & saved them.

AND...btw...7-Zip corrupted Red's Win XP computer...just got off the phone with him.  I've never heard of 7-Zip...I've used Stuff-It Expander on my Mac...but not 7-Zip.

I've always had WinZip, so I didn't even realize it wasn't free!  Normally, you can unzip freely, its when you want to zip it up that they get ya.

I have never even had win zip on my XP computer. Mine has always had the ability to unzip the files.

BTW, downloaded and unzipped just fine on my android tablet.
Only problem I have is one I always have with my tablet it plays the slide show backwards.

Do you use any of these listed at the link you provided me? The first one (7zip) I went to download got the attention of my antivirus and said it was a threat.

Sorry Ross, I still use an old copy of WinRar that I've been using for years and on other computers when I've repaired them I just use the built-in Windows one...but one of the reasons I sent that link of freebee's was because if I'm not mistaken I've used 7Zip while using the Hiren's DVD's and it's always worked great.

Sorry to hear that it might have screwed something up on Red's though. I definitely never heard of it doing that to anyone's system or I wouldn't have recommended. Hopefully it's not another one of those freebees that have been "altered" on a few sites to carry along a virus, spyware, or worse.   :(

My antivirus may be overly cautious too. It did warn of spyware but I did use 7zip from the link Gregg provided. I have them as individual files but not as a slideshow.
I've used WinRar before and may have an old version of PKunzip too. I just didnt want to automatically get signed up for some paid deal.
So you guys are seeing this as a slideshow huh? Maybe I need to open it using Powerpoint or something?

Nope that didn't work. Oh well. My PC is about 13 years old so who knows.

"AND...btw...7-Zip corrupted Red's Win XP computer"

Me do scan now.

So you guys are seeing this as a slideshow huh? Maybe I need to open it using Powerpoint or something?

Ross - It is just the raw pictures...if you want to see it in a slideshow you'll need something like Picasa loaded on your machine to play the album as a slideshow.  Windows media player likely can do the slideshow too.

For Art's frame, it just sees the pictures (.jpg's) and runs through them...but you have the photos the same as Art does...his just does a slideshow automatically.

His frame will also loop through all the videos automatically as well, but it doesn't do photos & videos together, so he has to switch between them using the remote.

The reason they're all numbered (and not names) is that I had to come up with a method to keep them all in order so the frame would play them in an ordered fashion.

So...I figured out that it would play in order provide the name was numeric.  I then grouped them by numeric orders of precedence.

So...
100000 = Intro - 'Carlson' Brand Images & Member Boats
101000 = European Members
102000 = 2012 Red Wing Meet
103000 = 2012 Iowa Meet
104000 = 2011 Red Wing Meet
105000 = 2010 Red Wing Meet
106000 = 2009 Red Wing Meet

That way, when the summer is over, I'll add in new photos for 2013 and I can just send him out a new SD card with all the new photos ordered with the old ones still there.

WOW ... Sorry Red ... Link for 7zip was from Cnet... Never had a problem with software from them ... Trust them more then Microsoft !
It even had good ratings on Cnet ...
Been so long sence I have used Winzip, 7Zip and PKunzip that I can't even remember how ...
With high speed internet acess haven't seen a zipped file in a long time !

What happened to Red's computer Doran ?

Looks like 7-Zip tries to install a special 'Toolbar' and other software to make money from, Red skipped them, then cancelled the installation which promptly trounced his registry to the point that IE & Firefox won't start up.

He'll need help from someone down there to fix it.  I tried over the phone, but its likely time to backup and save everything and rebuild his machine...at least, that's what I'd do.

He still has his laptop, so he's not dead to the world, just his desktop is messed up.

I wonder if Red downloaded it from one of those sponsored links - which are notorious for having altered software or tack-ons.

I just went into the link that I had posted. There were plenty of sponsored links made to look like legit downloads - but towards the bottom was the actual download link that took you to the legit website http://www.7-zip.org/ (http://www.7-zip.org/). I guess I should have posted that link instead - but left the other to give a choice of zip software.

I downloaded their latest 7-zip from there (filename 7z920.exe). Loaded and worked fine for me and didn't ask to load any toolbars or anything.

This is a typical example of why I hate those sponsored links - I understand the need to make a little money to maintain their site and have done it myself at times for affiliate sites, but depending on who they sign up with, the webmasters usually don't have control over which actual links come up after that - and we all know how interactively "targeted" everything has become with that technology.   :(

By the way, unless Red was to the point that he was needing to reload/rebuild his system anyway (seems like I always need to do that every six months or so - and I'm really over due on my main unit too), I've found when people bring me their computers for repair that I've been able to fix a heck of a lot of problems using the Hiren's DVDs (especially the "restored" versions). You do need to be comfortable with computers and know what you're doing though - but most people I've met on this forum seem to be pretty knowledgeable with computers.

is cost me $80 to get this lap top shaped up to face todays world, I don't know why really, just because it 9 years old and has been tucked in all cozy for the last 3 or so years in the bottom of a sock drawer, anyway ... the tech said the same thing Doran did, it lost a fight with a corrupted program and took a dump.  I don't really know how old the computer is, maybe three years, it was custom built by a guy that is out of business now, anyway, the tech said he will get into it in a few days, see if it's cost effective to fix it or to build another one.

I downloaded the link for the 7zip, and it wanted me to download a tool bar, and some more stuff that would cost me, so I just "red x'd" out of it and deleted the 7zip from the control panel, after that, I couldn't get anything to work that had to do with the internet, just off line stuff.

Thanks Doran, for trying to help me on the phone to get it back up.  I got a wireless router with a disc to load it up for the laptop, and the antenna thing that sticks into the back of it,  but I couldn't get it to work, so now I got the lap top hooked up to the modem only with the yellow line that was hooked up to the other computer, the tech loaded Google chrome, added more memory, said google chrome took up a lot less space than the explorer did,  nothing is in the right place now, have to look for everything, and can't save nothing ... grrrrr

Well, running wired (yellow ethernet cable) will give you a very stable connection...is the laptop running XP as well Red?

If you do upgrade, I think you'd really like Windows 7.  Easy to use, very stable, and not such a departure from XP that you'll be totally lost like Windows 8 is...

Just keep in mind, for $350.00, you can get a brand new one...that will do basically everything you'd need it to...is it a top tier system?  Nope, but its pretty darn good for a daily driver...and not so expensive that you can't shelve it in 3-5 years when its obsolete.

I don't like that these have Win 8 on them...but it is Microsoft's latest & greatest...but it could be wiped and have Windows 7 installed easy enough.

There are numerous links out there that hack the registry (have someone that knows what they're doing) that can turn off all that tile nonsense of windows 8 since all 8 is really is a more streamline version of 7 with the tiles sitting in top if it. Like your start menu exploded all over your screen.

I use to buy laptops with the same mentality I bought tools - that they'd be going with me to a job site and had the potential to walk off.  Whether I wanted or could afford a top-tier system was immaterial.  I only spent what I was willing to possibly lose.  Today, you can buy a notebook computer with some pretty decent abilities for less than the cost of a good replacement cell phone.  Amazes me to see ads with HP brand computers for less than $300.

Yea, i picked up one of those HP deals last year, have been vary happy with it, though i don't use on a daily basis (i prefer my MacBook)
I have a "maxed out" dell precision at work and it is great...
but it cost near 2K, and accounting don't hesitate to remind me that i have the "most expensive note book in the company"

I have not personally used win 8, but we got my in-laws a now pc for Christmas that has 8.
father in-law picked it up quick for doing most general web stuff.

I'm less of a Mac fan than I used to be, but I like them both, we have both OS's.  For someone who's used to Win XP, like Red, is the reason I recommended the 2 Office Depot PC's...but yeah, the Mini's are perfectly acceptable PC's.

Red: I threw both zipped files onto one of my web servers. Maybe that might work better for your system to grab from?

Since it's set to serve as files, your system should automatically know how to download. If it doesn't, try to right click on the files to do a save as.

It's not a fast server or connection and I really need to rebuild it sometime this spring, but I'll leave the files out there for a short while in case that helps you (or others).   :)
