Were shottin' for next weekend to pull deck, grind transom, build transom wood & stringer/drain well and maybe get deck back on ...
Any one care to join us we'll be at Jeff's house.
-
Gregg my Saturday is pretty full otherwise I'd come help. Maybe Tonka Jim will bring some of his Bloody Mary mix over to help sooth your nerves a little when you split the deck and hull and your thinking this thing will never get back together! :o.....LOL No worries with Jeff running the show!
Anyways, try and hurry your project up. I know a guy that needs a new floor and transom in his CVX18 and I need to borrow Jeff!.....LOL
-
Ya ... He's starting to get POed at me for going so slow ... LOL
-
Me too!...LOL
-
Jeff has his ups and downs (repairs elevators) LOL
-
Me too!...LOL
You have a floor & transom job to do as well Kip?
-
I might be able to come down and get in the way. :D
Its over an hour drive though so you better have donuts or something.
-
I'll bring Foglifter (coffee) and donuts.
-
I'll be there, just tell me what time & where.
Someone PM me Jeff's address.
-
I'll bring Foglifter (coffee) and donuts.
Fog lifter...I like it.
You are talking the 27th, right?
What time?
Got any extra dust type masks since we were talking about that recently?
Never mind... I need to pick one up anyways.
-
Doran I knew the floor was toast when I bought it. Jeff helped me pull the motor, drive and transom assembly in March. I had suspected transom rot and with everything removed there was no question. Not too bad but no sense putting it back together like it is.
Looks like Gregg has plenty of help this weekend!
-
I can do the grinding. I'm not very good with cutting wood. Wood and I don't get along.
What's a good time for you Jeff ?
I'll PM you the address , After Jeff PMs it to me ...
-
Kip,
Take very good notes on replacing the transom, I will need them sometime. Thanks
-
I'm almost ready ... Still need wood ...
-
Early sometime around 8:00am would be good or when anybody wants to show up.
-
PM your address to all members ... Just in case ... LOL
-
I'm almost ready ... Still need wood ...
Let me know if you need me to bring anything; tools, sanding disc, beer, pretty girls ;)
-
Sounds good Jim ...
You bring the beer and pretty girls ...
If you bring enough beer they don't need to be pretty ...
-
I am SUPPOSE to be selling a V172 Saturday. Not sure what time. We'll see. If i can make it, i make it.
-
Good luck with sale Jason hope it all works out.
-
Good luck with the sale Jason !
-
I'll bring my grinder and multi-purpose tool. I don't have much of an assortment of grinding wheels and disks however.
-
I have all the cutting and grinding stuff Ross.
Just need someone to drink coffee and eat donuts ...
OH. ... And talk to the pretty girls ...LOL
-
I can do all of those things.
I think the "pretty girls" would just be a distraction to those working. I can "run interference"
-
Hey Gregg...
i have a sheet of treated plywood you can use for the transom !!!
-
Keeping my fingers crossed for ya Jason!
Sorry for not being able to help. My "honey do" list has become too long!
-
Will epoxy stick to the treated wood Joe ?
-
epoxy will stick to anything ;)
-
Hey Gregg...
i have a sheet of treated plywood you can use for the transom !!!
OHHH no here we go!
-

Wait for me...popcorn's in the microwave!
-
yep bringing back memories of my ladder install.
-
Were waiting is the popcorn done yet?
-
Were waiting is the popcorn done yet?
Ate it waiting for the fireworks...now I'm off to a 'Wine Tasting' with my wife & the neighbors. :'(
-
Joe
what all the post are about is that it has been a question asked by many people on the use of treated plywood for use in boats.
And the answer on this forum and others has been not to use it. As may epoxy ( yet another debate) will stick to treated wood, with the use of polyster resin it will look like it will stick at first but with very little time you could grab it and pull it off the treated wood very easily. The treated wood in most cases still contains moisture and maybe some chemicals that does not react with poly very well.
As for wood will leave it at just plywood and let everybody decide for them self what to use.
Hope this will end the fireworks
-
What time are the bloody Mary's. Let me know what you need. Oh you picked up the card board.
I plan on coming down have to get my boats out of storage and back to my shop.
-
Hey Gregg...
i have a sheet of treated plywood you can use for the transom !!!
Sorry, that was feeble attempt at humor
;)
-
OK ...
I don't want the wood Joe ...
But do you have any seat covers laying around ... Maybe something in orange that would fit a CV's seats ?
Maybe we could trade ?
Got a radio out of the CV ... Pioneer , model # DEH-P4400 , MFD Oct. 2002
I never even turned it on ... It looks OK though ...
Let me know ...
LOL !
-
yea, ill take it, did you still want some cab ?
you can just grab the bag and use what you need
-
I grabbed a small tub from express after work ...
If I need more I'll give ya a call, do you deliver ?
... LOL
-
im sure the gallon will do, or are u doing the floor and stringers too :/
oh and sorry but i tossed the "fall print" seat cover
-
AAAHHH MAN ... how could you ...
Pumpkins ROCK !
Just transom ...
-
Anybody need a address let me know.
-
Well ... I didn't think it could be done ... BUT ...
Jeff, Jim and Ross replaced a transom in ONE ... YES ... ONE DAY !
HUGE THANKS to you guys ! And Scott to ...
-
Sweet Gregg!
Nice work guys!
-
The generosity of Jeff, Jim, and Ross continues over and over in many ways.
-
It was fun to hang out with other "boat people" and work towards getting Gregg water ready, especially after what feels like a long winter. The grinding dust in every orifice of the body is not fun however. My eyes just about sealed shut by the time I got home.
-
Ya had a great time as Ross said it is fun to hang with other fellow glastron people.
Had cold pizza and fog lifter this morning for breakfast thanks Gregg
-
How bad is the fiberglass smell in your house Jeff ?
Carol got up this morning and said ... It smells like boat in here .... LOL
AAAHHHH .... Foglifter ... liquid motivation !
Thanks again guys ... You guy did some AZZ BUSTIN' !
-
It's great to have club members with projects.
Thanks to Jeff, Gregg, & Ross for keeping me busy & forgetting my problem.
Sound like I missed out on Pizza, what time did you guys call it quits?
-

I left at 8:30 and Gregg and Jeff were still drilling holes.
-
Smell not that bad expected worse.
Sue said it smelled a little, I ask is it cat or garage smell.
Quitting time right around 10:00pm, all holes drilled and new battery tray glassed in.
-
Think I got home about 10:30 - 11:00 ...
Ordered the pizza right after ya left Jim ... J/K !
Itchy fiberglass dust has a way of making you forget your troubles ...
-
First time I ever seen one get split in half. Sorry I couldn't hang around had to get both boats out of storage.
When I left it looked like there was two snowman in the drive way.
It was nice to see you guys.
scotty007
-
WOW! Nice work guys! 12 hours is a long day working on a boat. I am impressed. The last picture of Jim in a cloud of dust is awesome!
Let me know when you are ready to hang that motor back on Gregg.
-
Should be pretty quick, need some sealer to get trim and drain tubes in.
Also ...
Ross need your Merc lifter.
-
It's amazing what a "motivated pit crew" can do, awesome work guys! I know there's still a lot to do, but you've turned a major corner Gregg, congrats. ;)
-
Looks like you guys had a good day weather wise to work outside. Good to see to see you guys even in pics. Well done.
-
wow thats a great job in short order......I was just watching the news.....possibility of snow Wed-Thur????
-
you guys done good !!!!
-
Why does it look like Jim's doing all the work? After all that talk about respirators, Jim uses one like mine (filter tip)
-
We only had three respirators, and Jim drew the short straw ... LOL
I was wheezing and coughing enough even after wearing one .. But it could have been the pack of smoke I went through ...
-
Gregg the nightmare is over! So did you actually pull your boat back home Saturday night with the deck installed. Sounds like you did. That's awesome!
And what a great group of guys that came over on Saturday to help. Especially Jeff for hosting at his place.
-
What an awesome deal, you guys have got somting great down there. what a great project boat also. i cant wait to see the finished product.
-
Got there at nine. Because I got lost. Twice. Was home by 11.
Those guys are fast !
-
Why does it look like Jim's doing all the work? After all that talk about respirators, Jim uses one like mine (filter tip)
We all had our turn at grinding. I did wear a respirator when I was actually doing the grinding but took it off when not. There was still plenty of that stuff in the air even when nobody was grinding. I've got a killer sore throat. It might be all the smoking too.
Yeah you dont get much fiberglass thru one of the filter tip respirators. Pretty small intake. lol
-
Went over to Jeff's yesterday (and didn't get lost, thanks iPhone) to pick up a grinder, rivet gun and resin ... Well forgot the resin ...AAARRRGGGH ...
Hope to get fuel tank hooked up, old carpet glue ground out, horn installed, trim on stern, drain plug installed and soak drilled holes in wood with resin I forgot to grab at Jeff's ...
Went with this drain plug, part's guy said Ranger uses them on the boats ...
Got the rub rail cleaned up and "Buckeye 2002ed" last week and some other small stuff done ...
-
You probably know it's wise to borrow a drilling template from a dealer. Mount it high enough not to plow water. Min 3/4" up. I'm sure you know all this.
About the plug. In our younger days we put the plug on the outside and it rotated and flipped out.
Had to keep on plane to get the water out. The boat store was open that day, Sat.
-
I like that plug. Can't fall out for one thing.
-
Got some stuff done today ...
Had a few problems ...
Couldn't stand to see it dirty ... So gave her a bath ...
-
Lookin' good Gregg!
Heck you will probably get the CV back together before amber and I get Phoenix Rising back in one piece.
-
Man ... I hope so Brandon ... LOL !
-
Forgot something. Gregg, I noticed on CGOA you had long mounting bolts. You can put 1" plastic spacers if you can find something. Take a close look at my pics on 1980 cvx. I think Belwood_laker has a pic of a good jack plate. Your motor is light and you definitely will get improvement by going back and up with the V in the way on the CV 16 now. You want to at least match David. Your motor dynos out stronger. Your retro is looking impressive.
-
I went with two 3/4 pieces of wood sandwiched with fiberglass so bottom motor mount bolts shouldn't be to long any more ...
On the top motor mount I got a T & H transom plate, so should take up some slack in the top motor mount bolt.
I'm gonna raise motor to the second from bottom hole and see what happens, maybe next year I'll look into a jack plate ... Not in the budget this year ...
I'm not a speed demon, I would be happy with 53 mph if it handled nice ...
This will cover the scars from the old Merc clamps and trim cylinder holes ...
-
Question ...
Under splash well was painted flat black ...
Would like to do that again ...
Do I need to grind glass/resin down or will rattle can paint stick to it ?
Maybe wipe it down with acetone or something first ?
-
Boat looks great.
Keep the pictures comming.
Igor
-
The white I ward on mine was "tractor paint" from fleet farm, it was left over from something I did years ago, it stuck just fine to both the new and old glass as it was, no sanding.
-
Your paint should stick just fine. I'd wipe it down, first, just as you thought. It will have whatever texture is there, the only prep you should need is to create the surface you want to see when the paint dries.
-
Thank guys ...
-
Gregg...
where did you get the Buckeye 2002 ?
-
I got it from my buddy, 4 of us would get together and buy a case ... That was about 15 years ago, first bottle only lasted 10 years ...
Looks like it a lot easier to find online ...

Got rear trim on and drain plug in ...
Motor's ready to go back on ...
-
Atta boy Gregg. Lookin good!
-
Looks great Gregg!
-
You are making great progress Gregg. If your stuff is like my stuff, there are endless hangups, mods, putsing, undoing things done wrong, etc.
Need any help with the engine? I have off Thursday, and the weekend of course. Do you need polishing of your back corner aluminum pieces?
-
Man I love that color. Looks sweet!
Hope you got my resin finger prints off.
-
" If your stuff is like my stuff, there are endless hangups, mods, putsing, undoing things done wrong, etc "
AMEN !
I put trim back on after a quick polish job ...
There riveted on, so there not coming off again ...
I HATE RIVETS ... LOL
Thanks for the offer but I'm just tiring to get as much done as fast as I can ... Warm weather is here and I still have lots to do !
-
Yep ... Resin on gel scrape's right off with a finger nail ...
Must be all the wax !
-
Look'in great Gregg, Splash day will be soon.
-
Gregg, Picker and lifting eye are ready when you are. Thursday after work would work for me.
-
I'll get back to you tomorrow Jason ...
Gotta check with the War Dept.
... LOL
-
Thur. Is good for me ..
Don't ever wake up a sleeping war dept.
...lOL
-
cool! see you a little after 3:30.
-
Sounds good !
See ya then ...
-
I'll be stopping by to make sure everything is done right / JK
That is if you don't mind the company.
-
Jason if its ok with you, how about leaving the lift ring at Greggs and I'll pick it up from him. Her is closer, I think. I'll send you the agreed upon amount.
Thanks
-
Works for me Ross.
I'll bring your hammer too Jim.
-
I'll need an address to Gregg's, never been there.
-
I'll PM ya the address if for some reason this doesn't work ...
-
Looking forward to seeing all who would like to stop by ...
Any one have a very small angle grinder or angled roto tool to get into my very small drain well and grind out some glass that is plugging drain for under floor.
-
Gregg, maybe some kind of a round rasp file would work. At work they use this to file the welds down on the joints of railings, powered by compressed air:
Dynablade Mini-Dynafile II Abrasive Belt Tool
.4 hp, 7 Degree Offset, 25,000 RPM, Rear Exhaust, for 1/8"-1/2" W x 12" L (3-13 mm x 305 mm) Belts
-
Dave
Grinder would have to fit between transom and stringer and grind at a 90 degree angle.
Bottom of well is only about six inches.
-
I see the difficulty of the restricted space.
-

I would love to help but I am completely lost in what you need. I have a 4" angle grinder and a multi tool so probably don't have what you need anyway.
-
Can you drill a hole using a long wooden drill bit from the outside of the boat through the drain plug, at an angle?
-
" Can you drill a hole using a long wooden drill bit from the outside of the boat through the drain plug, at an angle? "
Nope ... Transom drain is angled and to high to angle a screw driver down to knock glass out of drain holes in stringer.
Like this with the 90 degree adapter in center of picture ...
http://www.harborfreight.com/80-piece-rotary-tool-kit-68986.html (http://www.harborfreight.com/80-piece-rotary-tool-kit-68986.html)
HECK ... For that price ... I'll just go buy one ...
That Oscillating Multifunction Power Tool has paid for it self many times over !
-
Are you sure that it is not two items in the middle of the picture. Not a 90 degree adaptor?
-
Yep .. Your right ... not a 90 degree angle but two sanding wheels ...
I need one like this with a 90 degree adaptor ...
-
Gregg do you have a dremel? Use it with a drill bit.
-
Gregg,
I have a Dremel tool with lots of adaptors, I'll bring it tomorrow.
-
Thank Jim ...
There's coffee & Bailly's wait for you ...
Or on the rocks ...
-
I have a 90 degree chuck for a drill. Would that help?
-
Gregg -
Dremel sells a "wand" attachment. I had one but have worn it out and haven't replaced it.
http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-225-01-Flex-Shaft-Attachment/dp/B0000302Y8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top (http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-225-01-Flex-Shaft-Attachment/dp/B0000302Y8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top)
Crazy helpful for tight spaces. I bet you could make it work ...
-
I have one like that, I'l be bringing it.
-
My "Pit Crew" stopped by this afternoon ... Jim, Ross and Jason ... Can't thank you guy enough !
Jason brought his engine hoist and Jim brought his dremel tool with wand attachment ...
Every thing went pretty smooth ... except I put the splash well drain in and when the motor squeezed the glass and wood it pop out, so will have to be reset.
Jim's dremel cut through the over lapping fiberglass in bilge drain and trimmed some of the aluminum on the motor plate.
I now have the motor 2 1/2 inches above transom ... Might have gone to high ... LOL
-
Well Gregg, we have the props that can handle motors raised off the transom, such as your Laser II, and my Ballistic XL and the Quicksilver Hi-Performance 2-blade bronze that is meant to run at 5" off the transom. Watch the water pressure gauge readings and for a strong water discharge. I imagine that there are still things to button up on your boat, but things are coming together.
-
Lookin' good Gregg, we will see if I can catch you over this weekend. I only have Amber half of the day on Saturday and Sunday, but I think I just might be able to catch up. ;D
-
Must have drilled the right 4 holes
-
It was a good guess Jeff ...LOL
-
Very lucky!
-
Motor is second hole up from bottom and cavitation plate is exactly one inch above hull bottom.
-
They say every inch above the hull bottom equals one mile per hour.
-
Got something done tonight ... LOL
There green this year ....
Got a few other things done also ...
-
Too bad we can't pick the colors. That green doesn't look so hot next to the blue. :P
-
Guess it was better then the year it was pink !
-
Got carpet in tonight ...
Tape works GREAT !
Very easy to work with ...
-
You used carpet tape? I tried it on the 175. I had 2 brands because I ran out and one worked and the other didnt so I pulled it all up and glued it down. The mess type I got from Menards didnt work too well. The black foam stuff I had laying around was better.
-
I think it was this stuff, but it was $7 for 75 feet.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Roberts-Indoor-or-Outdoor-15-ft-Double-Sided-Carpet-Tape-Roll-50-605-12/100645279?N=c1to#.UZWAor4o600 (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Roberts-Indoor-or-Outdoor-15-ft-Double-Sided-Carpet-Tape-Roll-50-605-12/100645279?N=c1to#.UZWAor4o600)
Cleaned surfaces with acetone ...
Stuff is like glue, stick it to floor and peel backing off, it not like tape but more like glue with a backing paper ...
Also stapled to wood deck joint.
I cut tape with a scissors and it took some effort with a acetone soaked rag to get it off scissors !
-
That carpet looks real nice, Gregg!
-
Glad it went so smoothly Gregg.
-
looks great...
for what its worth, when i put the 79 motor on mine i plan to put 3/8"alum spacers between the transome and the motor so the drain will work.
-
Lookin' great Gregg, you're getting there!
-
Got kick panel carpeted and installed, plus some other small stuff done ... MAN there's lottsa small stuff to do !
-
Details, details, details. Looks good Gregg. Have you decided on the steering system yet? I sold my old V-153 to someone who was tired of working on boats. What caught his eye in my ad for the sale of the boat was "turnkey" "needs nothing". Thats what I thought I was buying with the CVX16. LOL. The fun is the satisfaction of doing a good job, and seeing the finished product. But, this will be my last boat.
-
Looking good Gregg. Inching closer to splash time. Heck its the middle of May and I'm not ready. Disgusting!
-
I have no choice but hydraulic system, look at the angle the cable would have to take to get to tilt tube.
Don't wanna cut any more holes in boat ...
I budgeted for it from the start ...
Ross
Did you mess around with resin today ?
-
Gregg, is it possible to use a spashwell brace and have the cable connect to the tongue in front of the motor like my system? The hydraulic system sure is nice though. Smoother and easier to turn than the mechanical system.
-
That wouldn't work, angles are to much and I would still have a Non - NFB system ...
I would still have the steering torque ...
Should solve two of my problems ...
-
Read that the hydraulic system needs a 3 inch hole in the dash. Is that correct and what size hole is now in your dash?
-
Daximus installed one on his CVX17 with very good results ...
Dash has a 5 inch opening for helm ...
Splash well has 3 plus inches of clearance, with motor all the way down on transom, over 6 inches where it sits now ...
-
The thought of a hydraulic steering system is exciting Gregg. The oil lines sure solves alot of physical restaints. Have you ordered it yet?
-
Nice work Gregg, I hope mine turns out looking 1/2 as good.
-
Hundreds of problems yet to sort out ... LOL
-
I've got a hydraulic system on mine that I wish I didn't. At least I think it'd be better off without it.
Never fails, a couple times a year, there is a seal that sits around the steering shaft - the helm piece is the reservoir for the oil, that seal pops out of it's seat and I lose half a quart of power steering fluid all over my flip flops. Seems to me the guy who put it together kinda rigged it silly at the motor.
Biggest problem I wish I could solve, is that when I tilt that motor into trailering position, it kinks the hose right at the fitting. I'm just waiting for oil to start squirting out of there one day.
-
They have done two updates, one was to fix seal. Might just be seal it self, think it's about $100 though ...
Do you or could you take some pictures of the motor/cylinder for me ?
-
Sure ... I'm under cover & in the dark right now ... expecting crazy thundershowers overnight. I'll snap some in the morning and get them to you.
-
I'm under cover & in the dark right now ... expecting crazy thundershowers overnight
Yea, we are too, I'm running my desk, computer, phone and light off my 800 watt inverter, we got satelite tv so it's off.
Power just came back on, went out and looked at the scimitar under the portable shelter, it's still standing, that surprized me, we had 60mph winds, 1/4 hail, lots of rain and wind, some ,ore small limbs down in the back yard.

Had the same thing over night here and expecting the same again tonight. When the front of the storm hit here last night it made the whole house creek. Amber had to work till 10:30pm yesterday in Aurora and said the wind blew one of her residents windows out in their room.

Hyper.....sent you an E-mail.......let me know

Ross
Did you mess around with resin today ?
I did and had some trouble getting it to kick. I know I know, its science. lol
Maybe I had the mixture of acetone to resin not right. I was winging it of course. Added probably twice the hardener initially, then had to add more, then more. It was a small batch but at least 3 times what I needed to bond dowels into old motor holes and coat the inside of the used holes. I think part if it was the temp. It was cool in my shop (61) but I didnt want to open the door and let all that hot humid air in. When I walked outside, my sunglasses fogged up it was so muggy.
-
Maybe to cool, should be 65 degrees or more according to Express Composites data sheet ...
Could be old resin, can't remember how long ago you said you got it ...
When we did my transom at Jeff's house every batch kicked in the 10 to 15 min. time frame ..
We were adding hardener with syringe so had to be very close to perfect ratio ..
I did a test batch with out acetone and kicked in the 10 to 15 min. range ...
Should have got epoxy ...
... LOL
-
Yea I was there, remember? lol
-
OH YA ... Now I remember you ... LOL
-
It was pretty ideal, condition wise that day...not too hot and low humidity.
-
Got throttle/controls in and hooked up, speedo tube and some wiring for lights and tank ground in.
Need to rewire dash ... looks like a bird's nest under there ... LOL
Tomorrow I'll hook up battery and see if I got the right wire's plugged in to the right spots ...
I'm thinking about taking boat to Hannay's to put steering in ...
I'll try to set up appointment for the time they have there boat show ... LOL
-
CV's going into Hannay's Thur. morning for Bay Star steering ...
Don said I should get it back that night or Fri.
Thanks Don !
-
Looks great. You have enough space to put the Baystar steering system? I though it needed 32" of space in the splash well. I want to get one on my CVX but that measurement is what has kept me from doing so. Once you drive a boat with hydraulic steering you'll never want anything else.

You only need 21 inches, Dan has one in his GT150.
(http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p286/Hyperacme/GCOTD/BayStarsplashwellwidth_zps73dcc4fd.jpg) (http://s131.photobucket.com/user/Hyperacme/media/GCOTD/BayStarsplashwellwidth_zps73dcc4fd.jpg.html)
Ya, but don't the pistons have to move?
-
Look through manual, you'll see how it works.
But the 21 inches is all that is needed.
Hope it works ....
-
Gregg, it will work perfectly in your boat.
-
Don/Hannay's got her done in 4 hour's !
Thank's again Don !
Will need to straighten up cables/hoses/wiring and get splash well trim boards installed and battery mounted.
Also need some seat bases and I think I'm ready to " GO BOATIN' " !
It will take some getting use to turning wheel right and going left, but I'll manage ...
-
I really like the looks of that Gregg. You'll get use to the steering I'm sure.
-
Looks good Gregg
The kid does good work after he sobers up.
-
My brother's got a Sea Star on his Ranger and say's he love it ...
Can't imagine trying to steer a 225 HP motor with any thing else !
-
Jeff ...
Took a while to clean out all the empty beer can's & cigarette butt's ...

Isn't the steering wheel upside down?

Gregg is good at driving standing on his head.
-
" Isn't the steering wheel upside down? "
No ... But it is inside out ...
-
Clean professional setup.
-
Looks great, especially if he didn't have his glasses.
-
Guy was amazing !
Second week on the job, so drunk he couldn't talk or see, because he forgot his glasses ...
And he only had one leg ...
-
The kid will probally never want to work on a CGOMN boat again after the bashing he is taking.
I am sure Don will let him know.
-
That steering setup is so much cleaner than mine, Gregg. It looks great !!
-
The tip off should have been when he parked his car in the handicapped spot at Hannay's.
-
If any one reads this thread there NEVER gonna bring there boat to Hannay's ... LOL
SO ...
Don gave me a VERY good price on parts and labor, the kid ( can't remember, was it Adrian ) that installed steering look over boat and parts before job, we talked about options and possible problems.
Job took about 1 1/2 hours ... That was from my garage and back to my garage in less then 6 hours !
I give Don and his kid's a A1+ rating for a job well done !
Didn't get to thank the new kid, he was sleeping it off in the back room .... LOL
-
In all my dealings with Hannay's, it has been top drawer. Joe, the accessories man, several times spent alot of time over the telephone and in person, helping me to choose the best steering system and advising on anti-seizure solutions. When I purchased a non-spill gas tank with a defective nossle, they exchanged the tank and nossle for a new one on the spot. Their showroom and shop are very clean. The employees are involved in fishing and boating, using the products they sell.
-
While Greggs boat was in one of the local racers stopped by, the boat obviously caught his eye as he mentioned it and if my memory is working I think he said "top shelf"....anyway he felt the boat was very nice and it is. Thank you Gregg, would be great to see that boat at the store again during St. Anthony Days.......
-
Got the water pressure gauge installed and cleaned up motor rigging ...
Ordered a 3 degree transom wedge for my drain hole problem, should be here in a few days ..
Bunch of other little stuff done ...
I gotta do something with the "Rat's Nest" of wires under dash ... Looks like $%^&*#@* ...
-
I gotta do something with the "Rat's Nest" of wires under dash ... Looks like $%^&*#@* ...
I agree. I'm not fond of using Scotchlocks and butt connectors so I try to solder everything. I'm a bit far away to help but I think Joe could show you how to do a T tap and Western Union splice. A little rerouting of wires and some soldering and you'll have that "Rats Nest" removed.
-
Gregg, impressive work.
-
HEY WAIT. What are you doing working on the boat when you should be at Rathburn?
-
I need to stay home and shampoo my hair this weekend ... LOL
Hasn't been a good spring/summer for me ...
Thanks Dave ...
-
It will take some getting use to turning wheel right and going left, but I'll manage ...
Gregg when you say stuff like this it scares me and I almost believe it. I even googled it.
-
On the helm the two ports are marked " P " & " S " so I bet if you hooked them up wrong it would turn the wrong way ...
-
I gotta do something with the "Rat's Nest" of wires under dash ... Looks like $%^&*#@* ...
Gregg,
I'm good at wiring, let me know if I can help.
-
Jim ...
I should be over at your house helping you !
-
On the 1988 Mercury 115 HP, the connections on the motor for the power trim are hooked up wrong. Pushing the down botton trims out the motor, and pushing the up botton trims the motor in.
-
Jim ...
I should be over at your house helping you !
I'm all done with the glassing.
I'm waiting for Don to find me the right transom gasket, then the engine goes back in.
Hopefully we will have a 'rainny day' so Jason can help me put it back in.
-
You could get a job at " Jeff's One Day Transom Repair service " ... LOL
We sure have had our share of "Rainy Days" this year !
Maybe we can all get out on the water by Mid July ... LOL
-
Now that my drain plug is on the out side, I'm thinkin' about mounting my battery in center, over the top of drain bowel ...
It's just sitting there now while I do the rigging, but looks good ...
-
Gregg, if you put in a bilge pump, you want that spot open. Maybe next year I'll put in a bilge pump. I left out the fiberglas container insert under 1/2 of the back seat to get more room. Always a question of how to use the limited available space in these boats. Need room for tools, extra prop, fenders, life preservers, fuel, food, and anchor. Taking the VRO oil reserve freed up alot of space.
-
It would need to be a very very small bilge pump to fit in bowel !

Jason,
Don at Hannay's located the correct transom gasket for me even after I messed-up and ordered the wrong one. I'm ready when you are.
Gregg,
I have a battery box for you, don't buy one.
Jim
-
OK ...
Thanks Jim ...
-
I'd be willing to help with some of the "rats nest" if you want. I have soldering irons etc. Maybe next thursday?
-
Sounds good Ross ...
I'll borrow some connectors from work ...
-
OK let me know what time you want to get started. I should say it depends on trailer painting. If that is the only day we get that is decent, I might not be able to make it but if its crappy like normal, I'll be there.
-
Jeff made me some seat bases last night ...
Thanks Buddy and hope your feeling better for your vacation !
-
Looks like a nice fit. I've gotta become better friends with Jeff ...

The out side's will be Burl Wood Vinyl Wrap Film , just like from G/C.

Nicely done.

Excellent craftsmanship! Well done Jeff and can't wait to see them in person out on the water Gregg!
-
Had to get some "Honey Do" stuff done first ...
Got the transom curtain side boards trimmed to fit, little bigger cut out on the cable and hose side ...
Got one of them carpeted, took my time and did a great job ... Climbed in to boat to see how it fit .... YEP ... I put it on the WRONG side !
Other side has stuff for battery so can't trade sides ... AAAARRRRGGGHHH ....
Back at it after dinner ...
Wasn't trying to " One Up " you Shawn ... LOL

Could we see some pics? ;D

NOPE ...

I wouldnt have taken any either.

Spent some time at Greggs today cleaning up the rats nest under the dash. Could have done more but not having wire colors that I would have liked to use kind of limited what was done. There were wires under there that changed color 3 times. I just went by the factory harness as to what they were but would have liked to change them to the correct color. Also, there is no uninterrupted power under his dash, unless the key is on. I believe my 163 was like that and added a terminal block to change the order things were getting powered. Everything works so....
Dash lights are on as long as the key is on and 12V socket is only hot with the key on.
-
Ross spent 8 hours under my dash today ...I let him have two cigarette break , so he could have been done sooner ... LOL
Thanks Buddy ! The rat nest is nothing but a fond memory ...
Got most of t he transom curtain side boards and battery tray sorted out ... NEXT is seats !
Thanks again Ross !
-
Looking really good !! You might be me to the water, Gregg, and I've had a year's head start.
I had the color changing wires, too. Yanked 'em all out, threw them in the trash, ordered a bunch of Ancor Marine Wire in appropriate gauges and colors and made my own harness.
-
Could have easily spent more time under there changing wires back to the correct color codes but only had white, red and black on hand. Speedo light wasn't working either and that was due to it not being grounded. No return wire there at all. Wonder where it went. Still lots of jumpers/daisey chaining off the gauges but that is how it was done in the day and I didn't have a terminal block to use for distribution but really, all that does is move the jumpering from the gauge to the block. Also nothing was/is fused. I did manage to eliminate several butt connectors and scotch locks but not all. At least now, you can follow a wire if there is an issue. New horn installed as well and some wood cut for under splash well.
-
Looks 100 percent better !
Now I have a place to plug cell phone charger into also ...
-
"New horn installed as well."
Hope it is not one of those air powered blast railroad train horns you can hear for miles that Gregg got from work.
-
No ... Sounds kind of wimpy ... being under the deck must knock down the decibel's ...
-
Test fit seats today ...
Passenger side is almost perfect fit ... YAA !
Driver side is off, one inch shorter in center ... thought both sides were the same ... BUT NO ... Have to cut a "Dip" into it some how ...
Ross did you leave your saw here .... I though not ... DARN ...
-
Gregg, does not seem like anything is the same on the left and right hand side of boats. My V-153 seats were different. Paul had to mark all the wood on the seat bases to make sure. I bet the Glastron factory takes a stock seat base and conforms it to the boat configuration seat by seat. With the different stringers, depths of fiberglass coatings, different carpet depths, there is give and take. We think it is exacting from the factory. Bass and Walleye Boating magazine would test identical boats, but the weight would vary maybe 50 pounds from boat to boat.

No sorry it followed me home. Well you have your trusty hand saw. That should be fun.
-
OH YA ... Forgot my hand saw ... LOL
-
So do you have to take off looks to be 3/4 to 7/8 from the whole bottem?
-
No ... Just the top .. I'm gonna break down and buy a saw, cut out the section on old seat for a templet and make some saw dust !
-
Soooooooooooo where did we go wrong?
-
That was the side with the control and wierd cut out on seat.
Shouldn't be to hard to fix ...
-
Something does not add up. Mine were 100% the same on both sides. The cutout is on the upper part not the base of the seats..... Maybe the old one was modified. I don't see why an outboard version would be different either. Maybe I just don't understand the problem.
-
Top of drivers seat base dips down about an inch more then the passenger side. Don't know why ?
-
Gregg, I have a jigsaw and a new vibrating block sander. Let me know if you need them. Going to be outside now for a few hours, so cell phone if need them.
-
Thanks for the offer Dave ...
There only $20 and I should have one ...
Top board on driver seat is rotted and will need replacement when vinyl is done.
-
That is really strange Gregg and makes no sense. seems like your floor would have to be uneven also.
-
I think it has more to do with how/where seats attachment bolts fit to deck, bolt slot's are lower on drivers side ?
Place where that part of base sit's is hull and not floor ...
-
Floor or not, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if it was uneven. I have the original floor in the V175 and there are seams and humps where the glass is thicker etc. Everything needs to be "custom" :P
-

yea, I guess that could be it.
-
Cut off the side on old box, traced on to new box, cut & sanded it, fit perfect !
Cut piece to extend wood battery tray so plastic battery tray fits ...
Ready to do some more glassing ...
I might even be done by Red Wing !
-
Post some pics of that battery tray thingy when ya get a chance.

Do you just screw that down to the wooden tray then?
-
Yep ... But screw holes are on the little tab's that stick out and wood tray is to small.
-
I see.
-
Why didn't you mount the battery on the opposite side from the driver? That why keeps weight more even.
-
Thought about it ... I'm now in the "Just get the #$@&# thing done " so I can go boating !
Battery cable's would be pretty tight also ...
-
Why didn't you mount the battery on the opposite side from the driver? That why keeps weight more even.
Yea I dont know why they don't mount them over there in the first place. I did move mine in the 175 but its still Starboard. I'm not going for any speed records. This one has plenty of extra weight on it anyways. Toolbox, battery jumper air compressor etc.
-
Battery tray on drawer glides !?!? GENIUS !
-
Battery tray on drawer glides !?!? GENIUS !
Yeah but I ended up spending way too much time on that. I ended up having to raise the fuel line, wiring harness, blower hoses and bilge line to get the battery under them. Its very crowded in that area! Also the stern light will not go all the way down now but thats fine. I put some quick disconnects on the light incase I want to remove it but my cover is not "custom" so I dont think it will be a problem.
I also ended up mounting that jump seat on hinges so the battery could be accessed without unbolting it from the floor. Turned into a much bigger job, just to move the battery out of the bilge area.
-
Time is a good thing to spend on your own projects ... it's done & awesome ... and it didn't cost you a ton of money, either. That is one idea I will certainly copy whenever I do another. I'll budget for the time - looks worth it.
I've got my battery down inside one of those Attwood battery boxes. I can just BARELY get the top on when the box is in place. The main battery disconnect switch has been good to me. Before that, even in my last boat, I would need access to the battery so I could take the wing nut off the ground wire and pull it free as part of my routine when pulling out of the lake and rigging to the trailer. Seemed like every time I forgot, I also forgot the radio, or lights, or something else that drained my battery and it was dead the next time I wanted to go out.
-
Battery tray on drawer glides !?!? GENIUS !
We did it 3 years ago when we rebuilt Burnin Daylight. Slides out from the top of the flotation box.
-
The battery is mounted on the drivers side because the bow mounted fuel tank is mounted more heavy to the port side
-
Thanks Steve .. I didn't know that ...
Got all SS hardware to put seats back together, mounting plates painted, boxes bottom & top edge sealed with resin/acetone, etc. etc.
Burlwood vinyl should be here Monday.
The 3M resin is very hard to work with ... Had to use 4 times the amount of MEKP the instruction state, and even then it set up tacky ...
I'm going to Express tomorrow and getting resin, measuring cups & syringe to do the glassing around seat base's inside corners right ...
Seven drops per ounce ain't cutting it !
Any one want a almost full quart of 3M resin and a empty tube of MEKP ?
-
If it does not dry, set it out in the sunlight.
-
Needed more supply's so went to Express and talked to Tomas about the 3M resin, he thought it must be old stuff and said I should shake it up and mix it with styrene instead of acetone, then mix it with the recommend amount of MEKP ...
Finished up all the important stuff with the good resin and whipped up a batch of 3M resin and styrene ( 50/50 ) and had a senior moment ...
Added 5cc of MEKP instead of 2.5cc ... HA HA ... Almost burned my hand ! Check out picture of mixing cup ... LOL
Jerry's right ... This stuff is chemistry ! Mixed right, with a syringe it works great !
7 drops from a tube aint' cutting it ... LOL
The battery mounting block didn't come out lookin' so good ... have to rethink it ...
Getting closer to done ...
-
You wont see that 2x4 when the curtain is installed ;)
-
Doesn't look like you'll be using that mixing cup again.

Looks like a leaker to me.
I have an idea as to how to fix your tray. Either build a small box to replace the 2x4 "U" shaped with the open end towards the existing tray, then cut a piece to enclose the front or stack pieces of plywood replacing the 2x4 and enclose the end as above, OR leave the 2x4 there and enclose the front. Not even you will see it.
-
Ya ... That would work ...
-
Problem solved !

Paint it black, it will blend right in ;)

Got one side done ...
Only got 8 T nuts, should have got 16 ...
CRS is getting worse every day ...
The burl wood vinyl is kind of stretchy and not as bad as I thought it would be ...
Hope to get the other side done tomorrow ...
-
That looks really slick, Gregg.
How do you like that vinyl ?
I bought a piece of black plexi for my instrument panel, but I know it will scratch to the max when dust settles on it - had looked at that vinyl, thinking it would go down on the plexi nicely - you might have "talked" me into it with those pictures.
-
I'm diggin the burlwood vinyl Gregg. If nothing else it's period correct. Looks good man!
-
Wow Gregg, all the work is paying off. Looks like your boat is moving down the Glastron/Carlson factory production line with the steering system, carpeting, seats bases, and vinyl covering. Do you have a launch date? I got a season pass at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park (family picnic). A just a few boat trailers in the parking lot on Friday no doubt due to the no wake rule on the St. Croix River. Sad for the owners of the high performance Baja being wiped down in the parking lot.
-
Looking good! You might be ready for the August meet. ;D
Same with me.
-
Gregg used CRS "Complete Restoration Services"
-
Gregg
Is that burlwood sticky back or dry?
-
Yes ... Sticky backed ... But not to sticky ... While wrapping seat base, some of the sticky sides touched the other sticky side and thought I was screwed ! But they peeled apart pretty easy.
It's also kind of stretchy so you can get the bubbles out.
I was very happy with it !
-
Looking great Gregg, keep up the good work!
-
Got the other seat base done, windshield on, seats in boat but not bolted/screwed down yet ...
Should get them screwed/bolted down tomorrow night ...
-
Getting closer Gregg!!
-
Almost splash time! You'll be out before the meet, no sweat. ;D
-
Looks like a boat again!
-
I'm worried that Gregg's boat is now faster than mine with the motor raised 2." Thinking I should not let him test my Mercury props. LOL
Gregg, let me know when you want to prop test.
-
Dave
I'm pretty sure your hull will always be faster and more stable then mine ...
We lost 12 more people at work, so I'll be going to second shift with Fri. & Sat. off ...
Not what I was hoping for ... but at least I got some of the weekend off and can take vacation days on Sunday if needed ...
I'll still need some help getting transom wedge's in ... Any one care to hold a motor while I slip some wedges in ? ... LOL
-
Really looking great Gregg, nice work!

That sucks! Guess I wont be applying there. At least you're still working.
Transom wedges ???
-
" Transom wedges Huh? "
To set motor back a half inch so splash well will drain ...
Motor sits up tight against it and it's a plastic drain tube so makes a good seal ...
http://www.thmarine.com/products/Outboard-Performance/Outboard-Transom-Wedges/CMC-Transom-Wedges-2-degree (http://www.thmarine.com/products/Outboard-Performance/Outboard-Transom-Wedges/CMC-Transom-Wedges-2-degree)
-
Got the wedge's in today ...
I think some gas and I'm ready to go boating ...
I think ...
Better test start/run first ... LOL
-
Sweet Gregg, can't wait to see the return to the water. Have fun and good luck!
-
Bet you're getting excited about trying the boat with the new steering and raised motor.
-
Did you have to remove the bolts and reseal again? How did you get them in place with the weight of the motor on the transom? Sledge hammer?
-
Put a block of wood under skag and jacked trailer until weight was on skag/wood, backed off nuts and pulled back on motor enough to get wedge's on two top bolts, then did same to bottom bolts.
Went pretty easy, cept for the climbing in and out of the boat ...
Could only seal bolt on inside of transom, but bolt holes in wood are sealed with resin.
I shouldn't have any issues for at least 30 years ... LOL
-
Dave did you and Joy get out today ?
Sure was a nice day !
I'm hoping that between the rotted transom, soft floor and rotted rear stringer that was barely connected to transom my handling should improve. The BayStar will be the icing on the cake ...
Bet there will be a few other things to sort out yet ...
-
It was a perfect day but Joy and I did not go boating. Instead fixed things around the house.
"a few other things to sort out yet..." can also be determined by a shake down cruise. All the planning and fixing and adjusting are fine, but the maiden cruise will turn up something else that needs fixing and adjusting.
Yes, moving the motor higher should eliminate some of the torque forces of the Laser II and the Baystar will eliminate the steering wheel from turning.
I sold the Ballistic 22" XL prop, but I think your Laser II is a better prop.
The 21" and 22" 2-blade bronze props I still have and can be tested.
-
" Bet there will be a few other things to sort out yet ... "
Ya that's what I'm saying ... that I'm going to have some other thing to do after first outing ...
Hope I'm wrong ... LOL
-
When you are ready for the wet "dry run" let me know and we can test it out - White Bear Lake might be ideal for the initial run - no debris and no swift current.
My next project is setting the trim tab to eliminate the torque of the Raker prop. Thinking of mating a bigger fin on the exisitng base.
These pictures are from White Bear Lake the spring of 2012.
