Title: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 24, 2014, 06:27:14 PM
A never fired "Nine Paged" '77 115. Scalloped block & scalloped teflon coated pistons. Ported. Big carbs. New stator & timer base. All new coils. New Starter & trim motor. Drilled mid, not sure I'm gonna use that. (Might be too noisy.) Cowl & pan. T&T and brackets sand blasted, ready for paint. Fresh paint on rest of mid. Gnarly looking chopper prop. Pile of assorted parts, gaskets, etc.

Know I'm takin a risk cuz it's never been run but figgered I couldn't go wrong for $500 bucks?

The plan is to pull the heads, exhaust & intake'n see what's been done. (I got tonsa gaskets.) Find out what kinda reeds/stuffers are in there, etc.  Before I bought it I pulled one of the inspection covers. Pistons are brand new. The scalloping & port work is top shelf.

Reckon we'll stick it on the ole 90 mid'n see if'n we can make it run? Oughta be interesting.

Yo David the prop is a Ron Hill worked 30P chopper. #48-78800-30A4. Doubt I'll ever be able to use it ...  But it does fit. And it's razor sharp. Take a manatee's head clean off ...

Ya I feel a lil guilty. The guy that it was being built for was killed in a motorcycle wreck. His buddys are all Merc heads so nobody really knew what to do with the motor.

Bobby Beer's on his way over to help me lug it outa the craport back onta the work bench.

Hate to take it apart but I dunno what's inside. Been told this is in there and that's in there. So now I have to see for myself.

Stay tuned.

So which hull is this penciled to go on?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

This one goes on the Baja. Then finish the C500. Got my eye on a 225 for that project.

See the scallop on the block'n pistons. Note the raised & squared off ports:

I'm told the psi's posed to be around 150. Cain't hardly turn it by hand. We took the bolts outa another inspection cover & were wonderin why we couldn't remove it. Pried hard til it finally came off with a "pop". It was then we realized vacuum was holding it on. Duh.

Priced out the prop. $519 from Ron Hill ...  Too bad I'll never be able to use it on this set-up.

What's  "Nine Paged" mean Doug ?
You might be able to make your money back, by selling that prop on Craigslist !

Once ya get the C500 going it will be just like old time's with you and Dave "Uppin" the anty ... LOL

WHOOooo.... 225 HP ...  Ya better beef up the transom !

Congratulations on the purchase Doug. Do not know exactly what you purchased, but seems to be a lot of good high performance parts that you can use. Probably with the prop, if you can not use it, the place to list it is on the Scream and Fly and Allison classifieds.

Ya I doubt my boys at Burris propeller can knock enough pitch outa it to where I could use it. I don't think they like bendin em more than a couple degrees either way from what they are.

Forgot to mention I got another motor stand with the deal. They claim they had the motor sittin on it but I dunno. Looks kinda flimsy. Think I'll stick with my home made version(s).

Went by Bob Clim's shop today to pick up a new impeller. Figgered it'd be a good idea since mine's been sitting a year. Bob wasn't real busy so I talked him into digging through his vast collection of manuals. We found he had doubles of this one: Year ain't exact but close enough. That thing is just SO much better'n the Clymer or Seloc.

Gregg, the "9 Pages" refers to an old article from Bass & Walleye titled "Crankin up your crossflow". Gave in depth instructions for all the mods. They modded a V6 but the same rules apply to the V4.

Plan for tonight is pop the intake'n exhaust manifolds and see what's up in there. Probly wasting my time but I just don't think I'd be able to sleep at night if'n I didn't. Plus it doesn't appear they use any gasket sealer or gel seal or locktite or anything during assembly?

Stay tuned

Post by: V153 on September 26, 2014, 08:01:53 PM
Okay ... Pulled the heads. Pistons and bores look good. Heads are good but gonna swap em for a couple of mine that have the coil lugs. Gonna update the power pack arrangement too because where it sits now is right where my T&T solenoid box needs to be. And I hate the clunky bracket that holds it and the coils, etc.

Gonna be fun tryin to get the flywheel off with the block sittin on the bench. But I think it's best to use the stator and timer base that match the powerpack. So all the pretty lil plugs fit together without monkeyin around with new connections.

Dunno who's reeds but they're two stage carbon fiber. Upgrading to a newer intake that has the lil egr/oil recirculating vacuum system. This'll require changing out the two lower inspection covers with two that have the vents. Carbs will be replaced with a newer pair that don't have choke butterflies, as those impede air flow. And it'll have the more modern choke 'primer' system installed.

So far ...

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 27, 2014, 03:22:28 PM
New vs old intake: Note the inch increase in thickness. "High Rise" ...    Heh heh heh

But seriously I really need to have it. Or I'd be "pre-engineering" all my stuff backward to make it fit. The fuel pump, carb & shift linkage, etc, all mount on the later model intake. Plus the new intake has the fittings to recirc the gas/oil from the inspection covers. Gonna change all 4 to vented style.

We'll be swapping the outer bubble butt cover too cuz this one was born without a pee hole. Poor thing ...

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 27, 2014, 07:43:19 PM
Welp we got the fancy carbon reeds installed in the new(er) "hi rise" intake, then commenced to bolting it on. 'Bout halfway through torquing it down we noticed the reed stuffers were still laying on the work bench ...  Naturally. So off it came again. We got it right the second time. Sigh ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 27, 2014, 08:17:12 PM
We'll be using the 1 5/16 carbs from the '83 140. Bleve they have #36 jets in em. Which is okay. But since I cain't 'member we'll probly pull em apart to check

Note the absence of air flow robbing choke butterflies. These have OMC's "primer enrichment" gig on em. Lot simpler than butterflies & the motor'll still start up cold.

Project Frankenrude: Heads, water jackets & exhaust are on. New, vented inspection covers too. Now all's we need is a lil plumbing & fuel'n fire ...

The 90 mid is cleanin up okay. Well as could be expected. I'm kinda fonda this new citrus Gunk. Works good & smells purty. Y'all should try it ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 28, 2014, 06:53:24 PM
Coils are on. (Yes they're 'posed to be sitiated that way.) Carb & fuel pump test fit. Late model brain box is posed to go here: But only one bolt hole lines up. Hmm.

In other news we discovered the block is the coveted '76 135 model. Highest compression of all. King of the crossflows. WooHoo!

edit. Hey Joe do those water jacket covers on the heads look familiar? I just KNEW we'd find some use for your old motor somehow ...  Heh heh heh
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 28, 2014, 07:26:18 PM
Note we got the flywheel off. No easy feat btw. Much to my chagrin however, the nut is stuck in the socket & shows no sign of wanting to come out anytime soon. Sigh ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: WetRaider on September 29, 2014, 01:28:34 PM
Hey Doug,
if you have a bolt the right size for that nut, set the bolt in, then use a small puller kit through the back end of the socket - some plumbing supply places will have a faucet puller that will have a threaded center that should get through the hole on the wrench side of that socket.

Or, really, if you've got a bolt long enough, keep driving the bolt and use the end of the bolt to push the socket off the top.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 29, 2014, 04:59:05 PM
Thanks Dan. Got it out by sticking a punch through the socket & beating it against the driveway.

Well the exhaust cover has to come back off. Wasn't paying attention and didn't notice it was missing the mounting lugs for the trim solenoid box. Duh! Musta been focused on the pee hole. Oh well still got 2 new gaskets if I can't save the one's that are on it.

Monkeyed around some with the throttle & shift linkage. Think I got it purty much figgered out.

The hardest part of this is gonna be attatching the electronics. This '76 block is a lil lacking on mounting lugs. I'm hoping I'll be able to stick some'a the stuff on the newer inspection covers. Note the multiple lugs on them:
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 29, 2014, 06:19:45 PM
Layin out the "plug & play" ignition. This is as close to perfection OMC got on these motors. The one small brain box eliminates the two earlier bulkier power packs, and the wiring required. It's a much more streamlined system. This one came off the '92 88 Special. Knew I bought that motor for sumpthin ...

The only drawback to these is they're rev-limited to 6200 rpm. Wussies ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on September 30, 2014, 06:25:32 PM
Changed my butt ... My new one has two extra 'dimples'. See:

Ah well. As they saying goes, "Practice, practice, practice." Sigh ... (I just love takin chit on'n off for no other reason than stupidity the first time around?)

Regardless the T & T module will now be in it's rightful place.

Thanks Brandon. Ya she's gettin there. Lil drawback today. Wiring harness I thought I was gonna use is not so great. Insulation is literally peeling off some of the leads. Dang! Ah well I guess it just means more splicing?

Found another treasure in one'a the parts boxes. Brand new cowl gasket: WooHoo!
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 03, 2014, 04:37:00 PM
Take back what I said about the powerpack. Upon further investigation it is not rev limited. WooHoo!

Now all's I gotta do is find somehow to mount it. Only got 1 hole outa 3 & that ain't too good?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 03, 2014, 08:31:01 PM
More 'tronics. Got 2 outa three bolts in the powerpack now. Wallered out the holes with a file to make it fit. No hope for lining up the last hole less'n I fab some kinda bracket. But two outa three ain't bad ...?

Ain't got the wiring harness I'd prefer. So there's gonna be a fair amount of cobbling goin on, but oh well.

For example we already have a female on female connector issue with the timer base. Gonna have to change the sex of one of em. As it should be ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 05, 2014, 07:52:11 PM
Well we thought we might install the powerhead today. That didn't go so good. Does anyone remember me saying pre '77 blocks won't fit on '78 & up mids ...? I believe I might've mentioned something as well about making sure the mid gasket perfectly matched the powerhead ...

What a rookie mistake! Been crying ever since ...

Looks like I'll be using that drilled mid after all. Reckon I'll just have to plug the holes if'n it's too loud?

Had to make some mods to the pan so's the shift linkage would clear. But I kinda like this pan. In addition to bein purty the cool thing about it is it has dual pee-holes. And I'm gonna use em both ...

On a lighter note: As purty as they are we will be forsaking the aluminum lower cowlings for plastic ones. A combined 730 gram weight savings!

Talk about putting the brakes on a project ...  Anybody gotta '73-'76 mid/exhaust housing? Joe? Do you still got the one from the '75 115?

(As I sink further into depression ...)
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

I have 4 motors here,
2 are 135's with bad power heads, I can send I one of them.
Do you have a lower ?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 07, 2014, 08:13:25 PM
Thanks Joe. Think all's I need is the mid "housing" itself (see pic). Bleve the resta the stuff bolts up.

Having said that it might be wise to have the whole mid?

Bolt spacing to the pwrhead should be like so:

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: thedeuceman on October 07, 2014, 09:48:09 PM
so the motor don't fit on the mid in the pix ?
the lower mount on the swivel is different on the older ones
apparently 76 and 77 are odd, or a mix of some sort.
anyway i have a mid and swivel i can spare, but the pre 77 are hydro mech lower, newer are full mech
i don't kno if the lower swaps but have herd you can make the newer trim fit the older swivel some how.
any ways the 2 135's are 76, older style swivel that work with external trim.
i can pull one apart later this week and send you some pix/dims
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 08, 2014, 05:00:42 PM
Ya the mid is new pattern. Block was reported to be a '77 115. (Heads were.) But as we later learned it's a '76 135. None of us dumbazzes thought to roll the motor over'n look at the bottom. Sigh ...

So basically I'm screwed. Nothing I have will fit. If'n I wanna run this pwrhead. I'm gonna purty much need everything that mounts underneath it. Adapter plate is different. Thermostats are different. Mid is different. Bracket is different. Lower is different. Etc, etc.

I'm so po'd & frustrated right now Joe, dunno what I'm gonna do. 'Posed to look at a complete '75 motor tomorrow afternoon. Guy says it ran great ... 5 or so yrs ago ...  askin $250. But I'm still not convinced I wanna head in that direction.

Old vs New:
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: Jerry on October 08, 2014, 06:45:03 PM
I have the same problem. I traded Jerry Sellner a 75 Stinger for a V4 powerhead that I thought would fit my '60 75, but it doesn't so I need a complete motor to fit my powerhead too. Sounds like Joe has a collection that need what we have (maybe) Hard to find with T&T. Mine is different than either of those.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: thedeuceman on October 08, 2014, 10:01:06 PM
Doug, yea i think  you do need all the old stuff...
i would have no prob knocking one of 135's in the head and shipping you the mid and swivel but im reluctant to let a lower go.
i suspect shipping would be too high anyways.
either way the pre 77 motors use the external trim system, i have herd that a newer integral trim can be fitted to an older motor.
i think it would take some machining cuz the swivel on the newer motor is a half inch longer than the older one (see pix)
Jerry, looks like that is a 73 to 77 block

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 09, 2014, 08:03:41 PM
Okay. I was angry before but now I'm just really confused.

Grew a wild hair'n tore down the "'76". Attacked it from the top. Got to the bottom'n thought, gee this looks more like a '78 & up motor. Hmm ...

Some sadist altered the bolt pattern to fit an earlier model. Which makes no sense cuz the base is different?

See the line-up: '75 115, '76 135(?), '78 140. Is it just me or does that 135 look more like the 140?

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 09, 2014, 08:44:38 PM
Grew another wild hair'n pulled the mid apart. Very interesting tuner: Think I might use it after all. Probly wind up plugging or somehow covering the additional holes that were drilled. Cuz I bet the sob is loud enough without em?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 10, 2014, 08:21:46 PM
Good news! My boy "Dago" says he can put the holes back where they belong. Just how he intends to do that is anybody's guess. But he says he can do it.

I'm glad I pulled this motor apart before running it. With the exception of the case halves & rod bolts. Stuff felt loose to me. And they didn't use any locktite or thread sealant?

Ah well. Hey Jerry, I faithfully numbered the rod caps. Then haphazardly pulled the pistons ...  Not to worry. Got em all sorted out now. Each assembly weighs 1220 gm btw. Perfect.

Discovered yet another use for my beloved 'Pearl Disc':

No need to monkey around with dangerous razor blades scraping that last lil piece of old gasket material off ...

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 13, 2014, 06:46:34 PM
Well Mike picked up the block today. Says it's no problem to put the holes back where they belong.

So ... I started putting the '77 mid together. Sadly gaskets are 'unavailable' for this particular tuner assembly. Hence the RTV.

Gotta wait a hour before torquing the bolts the resta the way, but I hope to have it back together tonight.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: Fuzzbutt on October 14, 2014, 06:44:16 PM
I've got to find where to get Pistons like those. I'm going to need at least one new one for my 'up block. Also what's up with the inspection cover and manifold differences? My '79 is standard type and my spare '88 block has hoses and tiny nipples in places all over the intake and inspection covers.

Also can you shoot a ton more pics of anything that was modified or unique to the bubble back modified block.

I love that disk idea for cleaning gasket material.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 15, 2014, 04:53:55 PM
The idea is the teflon coating eliminates the need for extended break in period(s). Though I don't think I'm gonna rush out'n test that theory ...

The earlier manifold doesn't have lugs/bosses for the later shift & carb linkage. Nor does it have vents.

Inspection covers don't have the multiple bosses for mounting rectumfrier, solenoid, etc. And they are unvented as well. The vents are said to improve oil distribution. Also claim to make it idle smoother.

Re Bubble-butt. There's not much to modify other than chopping out the exhaust rail at the bottom of the block. Note you don't absolutely have to do that, but it's posed to be good for at least 5 hp.

Ya the beauty of a "super-fine" pearl disc is it's hard to eff up and take off too much material. I'm not sure it's even possible with that grit. All it does is polish. You can still see the factory tool marks after yer done.

Yo Fuzz. Being '79 & later your stuff should interchange without too many headaches
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: Fuzzbutt on October 15, 2014, 06:06:35 PM
I'd like to figure out what you mean by the area I need to chop out of the exhaust area of the block.

I love pictures

I have teflon coated pistons in my Yamaha sled and it didn't require much of any break in. Was revving 8300 after about half an hour of driving. I eventually put enough clutch in it to settle the shift out RPM down at the power peak of 7800. Even at 9000 + miles my twin is strong. The bump in compression and lower rotating friction makes a difference. Especially in a motor with some wear the skirts slap the bores a bit and rob power.

Found Carson reeds for the "sport" modem for the V4 on eBay for $80. :)

I'm wondering if I can do the newer intake and newer side covers but still run the older style carbs and fuel pump. I'm worried about not knowing where all the extra plumbing should be going. Looking at a rats nest of the "88 88 I have no clue what's what. If I go the new route I need a lot of things to get the priming system complete and I need a replacement float bowl and likely a set of bigger jets to feed my increased appetite. I have the newer single CDI but the timer base I have is shot (bubbles in the windings so bad I can't fit it on the crank snout). Not sure if I would want to go the new electronics route since my power packs are fine. I don't think I have all the newer shift/carb linkage.

Well we got the drilled Franken mid assembled. Trim actually works!? Alls I need now is a powerhead ...  Hopin to get my block back from Dago in a couple days.

Monkeyin around pre-plumbing the dual pee hole set up. Gonna be killer. Might even have 'em cross midstream ...

Hey Brandon I got a deal in the works. Guy wants to swap one of my lowers, and some parts to assemble a mid. That plus a lil cash and I'm into a purty good looking alum trailer. 'Posed to go down mid week. Keep yer fingers crossed.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on October 25, 2014, 12:07:43 PM
Well I'm still waiting for my block. But on the brighter side I should have the aluminum trailer by midweek.

Got a present from Chris Carson yesterday. And Don hooked me up with a OMC dual cable bracket. Decided that was the way to go since hydraulic's a lil outa my price range at the moment. But the dual cable really oughta help combat chine walk.

More good news is it's finally gettin bearable outside so I can get back on the C500 project. Though it is 87 right now ... Won't really cool off til Halloween.

Ya and the best part is the bracket & reeds were free. WooHoo!

I never had a steel one break in one of these motors but I guess there's always a first time. Think I'd much rather chew on a composite one. Though I doubt that'll happen. Chris says these are good for 9K(!?), plus a couple more if'n you cut/square the reed cages. Like 9000 rpm's not enough ...

Fear not friends I have no intention of turning those kinda revs. (Mebbe 8K ...)

What I'm told is Don had chit Chris wanted. And a couple sets of these reeds were part of the settlement. Posed to be sumpthin new Chris cooked up for the re-emerging V4 drag class. I figger if'n they're good enough for drag boats that oughta be fine for mine ...

I hope I wasn't the only one to "go" in there. Although in my case it is kinda like anti-freeze ...

Got the new reeds safely locked in their cages today. Lil nerve wracking but it went okay.

The hot rod guys chop material outa the cages & square the rounded openings. (See pic.) In order to force more fuel through the motor. We won't be doing that ... Burns enough gas as it is.

Finally something positive. Got the aluminum trailer home. Needs a lil tlc but not too shabby. The boat'll easily fit between the fenders so's I hope to set it as low as possible. Should look purty cool.

Plus I talked to "Dago" and he says the 140 block should be ready soon. He was waitin on some fancy schmancy thread inserts.

Now if I can just get my truck running ...

Forgot to mention. Digging through Ernies junk pile & found these lil gems: 5 deg transom wedgies. Add an inch of setback too. WooHoo!

Couple better trailer pics. As you can see the bunks need a lil work but otherwise it's in purty good shape. I'm probly just gonna do away with those big bunks anyway so I'm not too concerned about em.

Springs look good & I'm told the axle's only a couple years old. Not a bad trade for a gearcase & $250?

"Loadmaster" is built up in Tampa & considered to be a higher end trailer, so I'm happy as a clam. Now if I can just get my truck running ...

Good Deal, Doug. That's a stout looking trailer. Those bunks look tall and large enough to hold a pontoon boat.

Ya it had a big skiff sittin on it. Buddy stripped & scrapped everything but the hull yet the boat still weighed bout 1000 lbs. Cost him $28 bucks to dump it. ($56/ton.)

But I reckon that ain't too bad. Gonna take that into consideration before I chop another one up with a sawsall ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

$28.00 seems cheap or at least reasonable to dispose of a boat. Heck it costs $25.00 just to get rid a TV and don't set it out for trash  because it won't get picked up.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on November 01, 2014, 08:24:08 PM
Seems more than reasonable to me. I really had no idea it was that inexpensive. Been raised on urban legends of it costin a ton'a bucks I spose.

Fwiw if you hack one into small enough pieces the trashmen will take it away. But that's alotta work. I'm startin to lean toward takin em to the dump.

Lil more progress today: Rear cross member's a lil rough but I already knew that. Mark replaced the two fwd ones so they're okay. Other than that she looks purty good.

Not hip to the lights where they're at. Spent the afternoon forgetting they were there'n bashing my head into em. Gonna chop em down'n lower em some.

The older houses (like mine) in the neighborhood were built in the early 70's. AC yes but they did not come with central heat. Rule then was they didn't install heat strips south of Tampa. Seriously.

Went to a party last night in Venice East. We were scheduled to have a Cornhole tournament but the wind was relentless. And cold. Wound up huddled around the fire, drunk ...

I am proud to say that I was the only one wearing shorts. All those other wussies had long pants on.

Yo David the prop is a Ron Hill worked 30P chopper. #48-78800-30A4. Doubt I'll ever be able to use it ...  But it does fit. And it's razor sharp. Take a manatee's head clean off ...

This fits a small hub Johnson?  Try it out and see what the rpm and slip numbers are.
I wonder if I could turn 5,000?  My 24p has me puzzled.  Running 61-6200 @ 54-55.  Rich

Yes it is hubbed for 13 spline OMC. I might try running it just for gits'n shiggles, but I'll bet it's way too tall.

My 24 SRX on the stock '83 140 would turn 58-5900 at 62-63 mph.

It's a 2 blade high performance 14" diameter.  New hub.  Seems tight but slips some as does my old OMC.  Prop guy said they are supposed to.  Still have the 23 2 blade.  Day and night diff when you look at them.  Runs 56 @ 6000.  No cavitation on either one.  Speedo is right on.

Good news on the '77 V4 block. "Dago" says it's done. Holes back where they belong. WooHoo!

More good news is I got a line on some 3" square alum tube for the trailer crossmembers.

Now all's I gotta do is find a way to replace the $700 bucks I spent on Rangerette this week ...

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

Got the block back. WooHoo!

Now I get to put it together. Again ...

Believe I have enough gaskets to do it. Like to find a powerhead gasket like the one I destroyed. I've got regular paper ones but that one was more like a head gasket? Naturally everywhere I look has only the paper ones. Sigh ...

Gonna try'n get at least the rotating assy installed tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Din't get near as far's I woulda liked today. Just that kinda day. Cold & rainy. Makes ya not want to do much of anything.

Did get some'a the parts re-cleaned and laid out for assembly. Then Don stopped by to scavenge some stuff for his Xflow project. He brought beer so all work stopped right then ...

He also brought a pair of Bob's 2" setback brackets: WooHoo!

Made a lil progress today. Top'n bottom bearings in. Inspection covers on.

Hadn't noticed how much the rod slots had been sawed on til now. Hope you can see it in pic. Purty radical actually. Done to increase air(fuel) flow through the intake, of coarse. Like I wanna burn even more fuel ...?

Ah well. Granpappy Jack always liked to say fuel economy was for wussies ...

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

Intake on w/new 'special' Carson "drag" reeds. Ain't they purty?

Had to install the intake two times btw. Left the reed stuffers out first time around ...

I've made that mistake twice now on this same motor. Y'know you'd think ya'd learn the first time but oh no not me. Duh ...

edit. Granpappy Jack always liked to say a really good mechanic could rebuild something & make it run, and still have parts leftover ...

Lil assorted progress today: Got the nasty rotten X member off'n the trailer. Moved the tongue jack to the correct(port) side.

Waste of time but we opened up one'a the carbs. Clean as a whistle. But y'know now I have to take the other one apart too ...?

Check out my 'custom' carb mounting hardware arrangement. Studs on the top two holes, allen screws on the bottom. Imo there is no faster way to get a carb on or off.

Funny thing about these X flows Joe is OMC offers no spec on bearings & other thangs you or I might consider important. They prefer to say, "Replace if showing signs of wear ..."

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

Swapping carb jets this evening. Figgered it'd be wise to go with the biggest set I had. Hate for this sucker to run lean.

Note my 'special' jet removal tool. (Ground down screwdriver ...) Works like a charm and a heckuva lot cheaper than OMC's version.

Ain't that what's great about tools? If'n ya got more than one of one, you can turn the extra one into something else? Provided ya have the right tools to do it that is ...

Got the new cross member mounted. Way too purty for one'a my trailers.

Sawed the top off the light posts/guides. Now the lights whack you in the chin vs scalping you. Cleaned up the ground & some other connections'n got the lights working.

Dug out what was left of the old side marker lights & stuck in a pair I had kickin around. Not sure I'm gonna wire em. Guess they'd look cool at night, but they're not required on this length trailer. And all's I can see from where I'm sitting is another connection to corrode?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

A miracle! Loadmaster finally emailed back with some info on the trailer. It's a '96 with 2500 lb capacity. So I doubt it'll struggle much with a 1000 lb boat?

They're posed to get back to me with a quote for a new Xmember but I'm bettin it'll be a lil more than $75 bucks?

Still waitin on a couple things for the motor. Should have them tomorrow. Then I can finish puttin the pig back together.

Deja Vu all over. Well we got the heads & exhaust housing on. Again.

Not without drama. Freakin bolt in the exhaust cover broke.

Naturally this required pulling both the outer & inner covers back off. Thankfully the broken bolt was sticking up far enough to get a hold of. Wasn't bottomed out or too tight or anything. Turned right out. Just decided it was gonna break that day ...?

Now, basically, all's I gotta do is hang the starter & carbs. Then figger out how I'm gonna wire the sob. Then once it's runnin I get to monkey around with carb jets. (Yippee ...!)

Boy I sure hope so. Least that's the plan ...

Got the starter'n solenoid on.

Appears the wiring harness from the '83 140 is gonna be my best candidate. Course it looks like a rats nest at the moment but actually it's not too bad. The leads line up. Kinda ... It'll be much purtier once I get it a lil more organized.

Mounted the trim relay(s). Nice thing about this version is it plugs into a connector directly to the control box.

Goin through the carbs for good measure. Probly don't need to. They appear to be spotless so far. But they have sat since 8/13. And all it takes is a lil tiny piece of crud in a high speed jet to ruin your day. Ask me how I know ...

Stay tuned.

Okay. Carbs are on. Fuel pump, air box and choke primer installed. Wiring somewhat straightened out. Matched 9 of 10 wires outa the harness to their likely location(s). So there's a distinct possibility it'll run. Cuz 9 outa 10 is purty good ...

Well we got her fired up yesterday. It did run. But as you can see the result was less than encouraging. Leaked water from both heads. With low compression on the port bank. Wtf?!

So the powerhead's back on the bench. Sigh ...  Y'know this chit's startin to get a lil old ...

Anyway now I gotta get these heads up to "Dago" and find out what's what. Fwiw I never personally had them decked. Just took for granted they were good.

Ya I thought so too. Stb side was a slow drip. Port side was a steady trickle.

Dropped off the heads & covers at Dago's earlier. He took one look at em'n said he could see the problem area(s). Not me. I guess if'n ya look at that kinda stuff all day ...

Welp just picked the heads up. Ain't they purty?

Dago said there were definitely some issues. Took 6 thousandths off the block side.

Should have new gaskets tomorrow. With any luck we'll have her running, and not leaking I hope, on Sunday.

Like to work on it Saturday but I gotta go up to Tampa for my nephew's wedding. Should be fun. Puttin me up in a swanky hotel Sat night. 'Posed to have some kinda fancy "Guy Harvey" saltwater pool where ya can swim with the fishies. Yawn ...

Appears to be on the block side of the gasket. Guessing it's from that thin looking area next to the water deflector?

I dunno. But now I'm out another gasket.

Tell ya what. If that sob leaks next time around? I'm gonna let it leak. Screw it. It'll corrode shut soon enough ...

Put a new impellor in'n went ahead'n stuck the lower on the mid. Went uncharacteristically smoothly?

Normally you have to fight with the impellor key for awhile. Then tryin to force the impellor into the housing you knock the base plate & gasket out of position. Once finally aligned you bobble & drop screws and/or washers into the housing.

If'n yer lucky enough to make it past that stage, alive. You get to mount it back on the mid. Which means fighting with the water tube then having to align the driveshaft with the crank.

However none of that happened today ...

Hmm ...

Ehh I dunno, kinda diggin the "rat boat" thang for now. I have decent original cowls for 88 Special, 90 & 115. Plus the '83 140 cowl which is repainted white at the moment. So it's anybody's guess ...?

X2! Hey Doug, when you get a chance would you take a pic of where the tell-tale water tube comes out of the motor on yours?  My 135 doesn't have one, and the bubble back makes it tough to get at the place I installed one on my 115.  Thanks, and Merry Christmas (belated) to ALL!

Yo Mark. Factory pee hole:

Yours may not have that 'boss' cast into the cover.

I've seen guys drill & tap in that area regardless. Seen others go through that raised area in the center. But there's a bolt under there so whatever fitting you use can't protrude much past the housing.

Keep runnin her through 'heat cycles' here on the stand. Start cold, let it warm up then shut it off. Wait a couple hours, rinse & repeat.

Doing wonders for compression. Started off with 125 or 6 per hole. Now up to 129 - 130. WooHoo! Bring it to Daddy ...

Yes. Sea trial soon. I hope ...

Thanks Doug.  That's about the same place it is on the flat back motors, I'll have to check again but I don't think mine has the boss right there.   I've drilled and tapped a hole in a '73 before (115HP), guess they had not figured out the need for them at that point.  Love the dual pee tubes (symmetrical balance?), but I'll probably run one line up to a water pressure gauge on the dash.  I know GrandPappy Jack wouldn't approve, but that's how I like it.   ;D

Yep! Balances the motor, improves performance ...

Got the bunks on the trailer, oughta be purty close. Probly wind up adding a roller to the fwd Xmember.  But shouldn't need any more'n that. 99% of the weight's in the aft few feet of the boat.

I measured from the axle back to the end of the bunk on the old trailer. Mounted the new ones accordingly. Figgered the balance point oughta be roughly the same? (Please say yes ...)

Let her sit for a day or so & just re re-torqued the heads. Surprizing how loose some of em felt. Specially near the center of the head?

Had her fired up afterward & all of a sudden started runnin like crap. Almost went apechit til I discovered she was running out of fuel.

Burned 6 gals since the day before Xmas? Mebbe 2 - 3 hours total running. 99% of it at idle. Yikes! (Me thinks this's gonna be a thirsty sob ...)

Regardless. The plan is to hang her on the boat tomorrow. Stay tuned

Did you end up with opposite entry dual cable (where did you find Helm) or just go with single cable?.............Are you running the spacers or the wedges?

6 hours running time today. Mainly up'n down the ditch. Skeered to stray too far from home.

Ran great! But sounds weird, takes a lil gettin used to. You'll swear the motor's making noises that are in fact coming from the exhaust.

Teased her all day then finally run her up to about 55 mph. At which point it quit. I was thinkin oh dear god I done gone'n blowed her up.

No worries. Fresh fuel tank & we were good to go.

Doug, I know the two props that you run now are a repitched 23" SRX and a 22" Lightspeed. I suggest that you try a 24" pitch OMC Raker. They are just a little bit slower than the SRX's, but are more of a general purpose prop. The Raker will be a faster prop than your Lightspeed, as I tested them against each other in one of my prop tests. A good used one should be $200 or less. Let me know if I can help you locate one.

Pictures of a Raker and Lightspeed together.

Thanks David. I'll keep it under consideration. But I doubt I'll be buyin a new prop anytime soon.

All depends on how the 24 SRX performs. Might turn out it needs a lil more pitch. But if so then I gotta start thinkin bout mebbe bending a couple inches outa the Ron Hill 30p. Vs tryin to bend more into the SRX?
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: David CVX-16 on January 06, 2015, 09:24:27 PM
You might put the 30" pitch Ron Hill up for sale and use the proceeds on a 24" Raker.

Doug, look in the Classified section of this forum.  John Thomas from Chicago is downsizing his inventory and has both a 24" Raker and a 23" SRX for sale at $175. I just got done talking to him. He goes back to 1969 racing V-4 OMC's and knows all the different heads, exhausts, pistons, etc. you can put together. He is very interesting to talk to.  Give him a call and compare notes. He was telling me the various ways to increase HP on my 115 Johnson.

Besides the rotted area under where the ski tripod base went. The floor's really not too bad.

Yes. No stringers is correct. Floor is about 18" wide.

It's very unnerving when you first get out in it. Cuz there's alotta noise from the water slapping against the hull.

Seat base done. WooHoo! Whittled the inner pieces down til I could hammer em through the glass tabs. You have to insert the front, then the two sides, and then aft. In that order. Trust me ...

Got the cushion bottom & back cut out too. Wasn't happy bout usin 3/4" for that cuz 1/2" is lighter and would've sufficed. But 3/4" was all I had.

Gots me two seats again. WooHoo! Now, to find somebody crazy enough to ride along ...

Note I left the seat back cushion short on the bottom in hopes that it would fold down flat. It didn't. Sigh ...  Still hits the bottom cushion.

Gonna move the helm chair a couple more inches to port. It's much better than it was but still not quite centered on the wheel. The old one was ridiculously stbd.

Not getting too concerned with cosmetics cuz I wanna build a base that goes all the way across. With a storage compartment between/under the seats.

Then I'll get fancy and wrap all the bare stuff with material. That's "Charcoal Tweed" Sunbrella btw. Imo it goes good with the boat. And it's one of what I refer to as the 'pre-dirty' colors. Hides oily greasy handprints well ...

I dunno. More I look at it think I might shorten the bottom cushion ahead of the hinge.

The old ones didn't fold all the way flat but enough so that you could sit on the back(s) when folded. Came in handy when docking or beaching.

Ya the bow light burnin out "issue" has always plagued this boat. Happens all the time. Cain't figger it out. Checked & double checked the switch, wiring, socket, fuse, etc. Everything checks out okay. Aft/anchor light always works fine? Wtf?!
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: Glastronjohn18 on January 22, 2015, 08:53:49 PM
There are only a couple of reasons for the bow light to repeatedly burn out that I can think of.  A weak filament would not happen all the time.

    1)  There is too much voltage going to the bow light.

    2)  There is more vibration / shock at the bow than at the stern. Bouncing off waves, etc.

    3)  Bulb not tight in socket or socket deformed (not making complete contact) causing increased resistance thus drawing more current shortening the life of the bulb.

    4)  Corrosion. See "not making complete contact" above.

    5)  Poltergeists

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on January 24, 2015, 07:38:31 PM
Poltergeists more'n likely.

Looked over the LED bulbs in china mart. They have one that'll fit. Down to $15 bucks or so. Tempting. But if'n I can get a pair of regular incandescent for $4 or $5 ...? Plus I gotten used to carrying a spare, and a phillips screwdriver.

Horn decided to start working again. Refused to do so earlier. But now it sounds kinda like Inspector Clouseau's 'Silver Hornet' ...

Dropped by Abel Marine today'n my boy Tony hooked me up with the missing pieces needed to install the ram. WooHoo!

Gonna run her tomorrow.

Something in the ignition this time. #2 rarely fires & 4 fires sporadically.

Crazy as it sounds I'm elated by this news. I was thinkin I'd done'n gone blowed the sob up!? (Hell I got 'nition parts ...)

Ya I hope to get some new vid(s) up soon fuzz. Motor sounds awesome. Even at idle it turns alotta heads. And at speed there's nothing quite like the roar of a V.

edit. Checked compression. 135 + per hole. WooHoo!

135? Wow that's almost what mine was doing. 135 on one side and 140 on the other. Figure that was why I could walk all over a 115 on the same hull and darn near keep up with a 130.

I watched the in the water idling video a few times. It really breathes out of those new "relief's" do you think that might mess with the ventilation on the "chopper"?

do you think that might mess with the ventilation on the "chopper"?
Shouldn't ... Though I haven't run it yet. Gotta get this steering squared away first.

Speaking of steering: Just got home with the rest of the pieces. Helm, hoses, and an additional 250 hp rated ram. All for a hunnert bucks from one'a my Scream'n Fly boys. WooHoo!!!

Probly gonna go with the heavier duty 350 hp cylinder I scrounged earlier, but now I got everything else I need.

Well 'cept fluid. Not sure I wanna dig that deep & buy the factory stuff. They're awful proud of it. Anything meeting Mil Spec H5606 is acceptable, though I ain't found nothin yet.

ATF may be used "in an emergency". Me thinks the only "emergency" is yer not buyin it from them? But we'll see.

My friend here that also owns a CVX16 has the baystar on his CVX16 with a 150 eTec and it seems to run great. I haven't been at the helm yet but it too care of a lot of his instability on the transom side mount single cable steer.

Anything'll be better'n what I got.

Talked to a cheerful lady at SeaStar in British Columbia earlier & she emailed a manual. I printed it, punched holes in it, and put it in a three ring binder. Opened it up and the pages were in backwards ...

Under normal circumstances my printer prints last page first. So it's on the bottom? Guess it must be some kinda Canadian thing ...

Ah well. After rearranging the pages I went over all my goodies & looks like I got what I need to install.

Far as oil goes: Did a lil research & hydraulic fluids meeting the Mil Spec are commonly used in aircraft. Excluding shipping the stuff can be had for $6 bucks a quart. Dunno bout you but that's a lot better'n $15 a pint for SeaStar's chit. Gotta give my boy out at Venice Airport a call ...

I'm told similar fluid is used in tractors & snow plows. Also oil shocks & hydraulic jacks?

Got her cleaned up a lil mo:

Went through the ignition. The stator, timer base, and coils all test good so's it's gotta be the power pack. Bummer is this unit ain't that old, bought in 2012?

Oh well. Just found a new one from a joint in Texas for a lil under $90 bucks incl shipping.

Fyi the big self proclaimed "low price" outfits were at least $35 to $45 bucks higher. Some jokers out in CA even wanted $228?! Yikes!!

Me too! They say it is ...?

Well, got the old helm out. But now I need to open my hole ...  That's always fun, drilling a bigger hole around a smaller one.

Got the ram installed without too much trouble. Other than blowing fluid all over the place.

The pretty newer one wouldn't line up so had to go with the uglier one. But it is rated for 100 more hp. If it works I'll probly pop the 'Z' brackets off and repaint em. Or mebbe just polish em up.

Ran out to Venice Airport and my buddy John hooked me up with a gallon of acceptable oil for $33 bucks. WooHoo! Heckuva improvement over $15 bucks a pint for Sea Star I'd say?

Stay tuned

Dash hole reamed out, new helm in. Hoses run. Decided on drilling a new hole in the splashwell & run em down port side'a the boat. Counterbalance don't you know ...

Still gotta 'purge' the system tomorrow. Got plenty o helicopter fluid ... Then tidy up the hoses. Tie em up under the bow, etc. Got something special in mind for where they come into the splashwell. But it's a secret ...

Been doin a lil research and have determined I can use the shiny new(er) hydraulic cylinder. IF I have the correct 'pivot plate'. ie The part that bolts between it and the motor tiller. One I have is on the left, one I need is on the right in the pic.

Joint up in Jacksonville is Teleflex's regional repair center. Gonna call em tomorrow & see if they'll sell/swap one? Yet somehow I doubt my 'trade-in' proposition is gonna go over well ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on February 04, 2015, 03:21:32 PM
Well today's boat news is mostly depressing. Came home early to swap out the power pack. Guess what? Didn't solve the problem. Grrr

Thought for sure I had it diagnosed right but now Bob says it's gotta be the timer base. Which btw showed good on the tests I could do with my meter. Sigh. Reckon if I'm gonna keep playin this game I better bite the bullet and buy a decent DVA meter huh?

Oh well. SeaStar in Jacksonville said they'd be more than happy to swap the pivot plate. But they wan't me to mail it to em. Along with $100 bucks. Which means I'm gonna keep scrounging for awhile.

If there's a bright side the ignition problem must be in the timer base. If it isn't, I'm going to kill myself ...

Seriously. What really ticks me off most is priding yourself thinkin ya got it right. But then ya wind up lookin like a dumbazz?

Now you bite your tongue mister! But that'd be my luck. Though I seriously doubt it. No I think the culprit is the timer base. The other suspects have been ruled out, by process of replacement ...

Risking additional frustration, I decided to go ahead'n attempt installing my custom hose keeper. Thankfully it worked out great. WooHoo!

Soon Gregg, soon.

Have had her up over 60 with the Lightspeed, but Sunday we'll stick the SRX on & really let the ponies run. Gotta be broken in by now.

As you can see in the vid it still wants to chine walk a lil. Gonna try'n position the fuel tanks more to port & see if that helps any. You wouldn't think my scrawny butt'd throw it off balance much but evidently it does?

Then again this might be near good as it gets. Unfortunately the hull is what it is. Being short and squat with no significant pad kinda limits what it'll do.

Gotta get some vid shot by somebody on shore so the wind noise don't obliterate the motor. That or a camera with a better mic? I guarantee the sound'll put a smile on the face of anyone who knows anything bout motors.

There's a walking/biking trail that runs along the east side of the ditch. People just stop and stare. Heh heh heh. In the no wake zones too.

Grew a wild hair Sunday'n decided to see how far North I could get with a 6 gal tank. Made it all the way to just past the Ringling Causeway. Ain't been that far in a coon's age.

I remember why now, basically cuz it sucks. Din't measure but it's gotta be 90% no wake these days. I'd heard the last round of new "Manatee Zone" crap was tough on Sarasota boaters but it was ridiculous. Must be working, didn't see a single Manatee?

But I digress. Boat ran great with the SRX. 62 or so on the way home. Getting closer but ain't quite cracked the 62.9 record. Had I been a lil more sober last night I woulda broken it. Maybe next time.

Though the new steering is purty dang tight. Chine walk continues to be a problem. I'm thinkin short of addin a pad mebbe some trim tabs'd help?

Bummer on the chine walking. How's the motor bushings? Put 100 pounds of moveable weight low in the hull to see if it's just a balance thing. I took the chine walk out of my cvx16 with raising the motor up. Made a huge difference.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: GCarlover on February 21, 2015, 02:07:33 PM
Fuzz is right.  Less leverage from the motor to rock the boat.  I've heard that from others.  Try raising motor first.  Look at where my tabs are mounted on the first page of 1980 CVX 16.  I have them mainly for the weight of the 140 Looper.  When I tried raising them from flush last fall I got porpoising at 30 mph with an empty tank.  Also best place is outside edges.  Less drag and you can run them negative some?  The 10 inch aluminum are above the bottom offset.  Sawed it off on mine.  Tendency to cavitate on turns is great if the prop is not low.  No chine walk at 56+.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: V153 on February 21, 2015, 03:57:35 PM
Don't know that I can raise the motor much more without needing a low water pickup. And a jackplate ... already as high as the bolts will let me go. Could drill new holes but that wouldn't leave much meat at the top of the transom.

Bearings/bushings are new. No slop. Next step would be to go with solid motor mounts I spose.

Tabs are definitely on the wish list. Might try'n cobble up a pair on my own.

This hull just don't seem to like much trim at all. Cain't fly the bow anywhere near's much as the 153.

Ya the chine walk is frustrating. Just start getting there and here it comes. P's me off ...

Ah well. Gonna try for top speed again tomorrow. Polished the prop some, mebbe that'll help ...?

Title: Re: Look what followed me home:
Post by: David CVX-16 on February 21, 2015, 04:10:45 PM
The OMC Raker's do not have as much bow lift as the SRX's - may help control the chine walk. I would try a 24" Raker. You will find that a Raker is a much faster prop than the Lightspeed (Laser II). Are the back edges of your boat where the transom meets the hull sharp edges?

Today was a good day. Sold my old galvanized trailer this morning & then went 63.8 in the boat this afternoon. WooHoo!

Wasn't really tryin. Honest. And I had near full fuel, beer, & cigarettes, etc?

My buddy Ron snuck up and blew by me in the ditch on the way to Snake Island. He's got a really light 16' Stevens w/115 Etec on a jack plate. Boat'll run 59 or so. I was cruising at 40 - 45 so it took me awhile to catch up.

Wasn't paying attention to the GPS, reckon I was focused on catching & passing the sob. Which I did of course. Didn't notice the new top speed til on the way home.

Mebbe that's the key. Not to think too hard about it? I dunno. But hey I'll take a  surprise .9 mph increase any day. YeeHaw!

Read way high on the 4 cyl setting but when I switch to 8 cyl it seems to be about right. Seeing as how it's for 4 cycle motors I dunno if it's gonna be accurate. But it looks cool ...

If yer asking how many rpm. I dunno. My guess would be close to 6K.

63.8's the best top end. There's still plenty left in the motor but the hull becomes uncontrollable. We're workin on that ...
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

So how do you like the hydraulic steering? I'm looking at the baystar system for mine. If I'm pulling off my current v4 I might as well change the steering over from a single cable. My buddy David has one on his cvx16 on a 159 eTec and it works amazingly well. How does that steering wheel feel?

I dig the big tach. The 2 stroke v4 should have the same number of pulses as a 4-stroke v8. It's looking at frequency not the AC voltage. If you have a very good DMM you can flip it over to frequency and double check. I did this with my Fluke to back up the signal coming across the purple or grey wire (I forget which is tach and which is key on)

I'm thinking about a Ram mount for my iPad once I get the navigation software it should work as good or better than my Garmin (same model as yours) since I should be able to see it better. I might end up using both. Who knows.
Title: Re: Look what followed me home:

Really dig the hydraulic steering Chris. Like night & day compared to the ole sloppy cable. Lot tighter/more responsive.

Not much feedback through the helm. But not hard to steer. Purty much stays aimed at where it's pointed?

Tach don't work right. Dang it!

Ya the RAM mount works great. Been in the sun for three years or so. Ain't fell apart yet.

Years ago I picked up a pair of handle bar mounts from Garmin for the Venture. It replaces the back with one half of the mount then the other half is mounted on a bar. I use one on my snowmobile (have the aux power adapter wired to the sled too) and one on the grab bar next to my ski mirror. Works great.

Bummer on the tach. Do you need one? I might have one. I can shovel my way back to my shed and see what I have.

I know I'll be looking for another water pressure gauge this year. I also want to modify my dash stuff to include some sort of drains on both the water pressure and speedometer making it so I can vent it for winterization needs.

I'll keep my eye out for a decent baystar kit. Need to have a running outboard first so I'll wait to drop the $600 on steering. I've got 70 feet of privacy fence to install this spring along the rear of my back yard cause my neighbor hates my dogs add to that my driveway isn't surviving winter here too well. Some or all of it may need to be replaced this summer. Sure would be handy to have a money tree out back.

Sounds like my in-laws are moving back to your neck of the woods this month. I'm not sure if it's Punta Gorda again but it is somewhere near there.

That'd be great Chris. Whenever you get a chance. No rush, done without one for this long. Would like to try the 30P Ron Hill and see where the revs are. Kinda gimme an idea how much pitch I need to have whacked outa it.

Punta Gorda's a nice area. Got hammered by hurricane Charley in '04 so a lot of it's new/rebuilt. Bleve that's where Terry & Nancy stayed last time down.

re Your gauges. I'd think mebbe just a tee with a plug in it right behind the gauge? Blow some air/anti-freeze through when you wan't to winterize?

It's cheap too. Less than the $60-$130 of the others.

26 Laser II for sure.......I think at least some of the Lasers won't fit a v4 due to length.....I can check if you think you might be interested......

They would be talking about the Quartach I think......attached from the 1984 accessory catalog.......I ran the part number into BRP and it superceded about 5 times to 0175756..........they still show availability on them with a list of 95.00..........

Sure I'd be interested. Too long? Where, the hub? (I don't have a trim/torque tab.)

"Quartach". (Sounds like a character on Star Trek ...)

I think I just might have to have me one of them. (Soon's I make some money that is ...)

Did ya see the blistering refresh rate of once every quarter second?

Do not believe any of the Laser II's built for Mercury outboards will fit a Johnson/Evinrude. The Lightspeed designed for a OMC has special machining to make the outside wall that fits into the lower unit gearcase smaller. Then of course you need the hub kit for a 13 spline shaft.

From my experience, the Raker is a faster prop than a Laser II/Lightspeed  by a significant difference. Tested a Lightspeed 22 and a Raker 22 both on the same day on White Bear Lake.

"First was the Mercury Lightspeed 22" pitch. Same as a Laser II, with a good reputation as a performance prop that holds the bow up. The take off was smooth and gripped better than the Rakers. Bow lifted. Gripped well around the corners. But the top speed was 52.8 MPH at 5,400 RPM, slowest prop tested for the day. Good prop, but perhaps the blades are too big.

Next the two Raker 22" pitch props, 53.3 and 54.2 MPH at around 5,300 to 5,400 RPM's. The Rakers are not quick out of the hole, and lose grip around the corners, but they are fast and hold the bow high. The motor hums with this prop. With a Raker 22" last fall in cold weather with quite a chop and back wind, the boat hit 55.0 MPH, so 54.2 MPH today in warmer weather and 9 gallons of gas in the back seat was respectable"

Thanks David. For some reason I can never 'member which one's same as a Lightspeed. Some type of mental block ...

I really need to get mine down to the boys at Burris and have'em work some of their mojo on it. When that repitched SRX came back it was a freakin work of art. Mile an hour faster and sharp enough to take a Manatee's head clean off. I've since dinged it ... sigh ...

I will be in the shop this weekend.....just for grins I will see what I have in the mid-upper 20"s pitch and let you know......Thinking I should at least have a few Cleavers.........I was not sure about the fit of all years on the Lasers....I have them dating back to when they first came out and my old memory thought there may have been some different length tubes used?????  The longer tubes helped provide transom lift I think?  Anyway  the Quartach would be cool and very period correct.....Smittys in Lake City, Mn  shows 1 in Inventory......

current list price is 95.00 available  as a drop ship from BRP.....current part number is 0175756......The current part number may not look exactly the same as the original......Example......The SRX prop was called SST II Over the Hub when introduced and was finished in Teflon (Black).......I Think......(my old memory again).....
