Just cut a deal for this 16' Allison race hull. Oughta run at least upper 70's or so with my 140. WooHoo!
-
no hate...
bummer yer not fixin the metric.
but that hull will be a blast, and kinda yer style. :o
-
Good for you Doug
Have fun with it, you could always add a glastron swoosh!
-
Congrats Doug! Just don't kill your self! ;D
-
You left me far behind long ago. I don't care any more. Go for it. Just don't blow any engines or hit any buoys. LOL
Now you will have to get all the Allison gear.
Congratulations, Allison's are the best.
-
Now you will have to get all the Allison gear
Nah y'know I don't believe in all that crap David. But my birthday IS just before the MN meet ...?
-
Congrats Doug! Just don't kill your self! ;D
300lb hull. I figger if'n it starts to come over, I can *Censored* and push it back down ...
edit. Substitute 'flatulate' for "Censored". Aie aie aie ...
Y'know if Flatulate had a "r" in it, you could make it spell *Censored* ...
-
you could always add a glastron swoosh!
Just might Jeff. That and I do have a pair of 'footballs' I could rivet on ...? After all it's probly gonna wind up bein a rat boat, as usual. But she oughta be purty dang fast. Hard to believe how light the hull is.
Lemme know if ya need any parts for your V4 project.
-
Hey I just realized, now my jack plate will match ... I'm tellin ya that lil sob ought really haul with this motor.
Anybody wanna buy a BAJA? Hull only ...
-
Your banned from the Glastron forum for 20 seconds ...
OK ... Welcome back and congratulations on your new Allison !
-
Thats cool...........300 is light for a 16 foot boat...........should fly
-
Congratulations on your new hot rod, please be safe. Curious to know what makes the Allison's so fast, is the hull profile much different or is it simply because it is so light?
-
It would still go faster with a Mariner .... LOL ... Nice find ...
-
Hauled her home today. No major negative surprises. Couple positive. Has a high dollar 'recall' tach. Rigging is 'plug and play' for my motor.
But I think I'm gonna need a bigger fuel tank ...?
Hull is already finished. Just need to strip the stickers & spray the deck and transom.
-
Nice! That would be Doug. The need for speed!
That is super light. Hope you dont flip it. Be cool until you get the feel for it.
Yeah sell the Baja but keep the metric. Good plan.
-
My buddy Ron claims to have a '79 115 to hang on the Baja.
(I shouldn't tell you this, because it's posed to be classified top secret. But the 115 came off a CVX 16 that he's almost finished restoring. Gonna have a 150 HO Etec on her now.)
Regardless. The Baja'll run 55 with a 90. Oughta do at least that with a 115? For sale cheap!
-
Doug
With a bigger gas tank looks like the cooler will be staying behind. lol
How you going to bring your friends with, only one seat?
-
Well I spose if'n ya didn't mind holding a tank in your lap ...
edit. 'Regulation' drag boat tank fer sale ...
-
NICE Doug !
We should be seeing some CRAZY mph numbers shortly ...
-
What is that... about 3-4 gallons?
I was thinking the same thing...about your cooler. Maybe strap it to your seat back.
No, I have it...either carry it in your belly or DOPB
Drink other peoples beverages.
-
Doug
With a bigger gas tank looks like the cooler will be staying behind. lol
How you going to bring your friends with, only one seat?
If'n they're brave enough to climb into a boat with me. They can bring their own friggin seat ...
-
A lot of potential in that boat Doug.
-
This video of an Allison Craft with an in-line Mercury. Don't know if it is the same hull as yours, but it sure is balanced.

Doubt it's more than 3? Set up for drag racing. Actually have the aluminum rails that were stuck on to the bottom for that purpose, keepin it goin straight. (If'n ya look close you can see em in the early race pic.) Thankfully the screw holes were filled when the bottom was redone.

Very cool Dave. Thanks! Looks to be about the same hull.
Re stability. They did put different width pads on these. With difrent hooks and such. Mine's about the widest at 9 inches, and then some ... This hull has been "blueprinted" and has what they call a finger hook on the very end of the pad. Like you were to lay your finger across it and glass it in. If'n ya had a 9" finger ...
-
Jerry Sellner from our Glastron group holds the world's record with an Allison boat traveling 86.772 MPH in a 1995 Allison XR-2001 powered by a 99.9 CI V-4 140 HP OMC. Darris Allison helped Jerry set the boat up for the record. Darris said he could add several MPH to the top speed if Jerry had time for Darris to fine tune it.
And some more of Jerry's boats.
I've heard that the finger on the back of the hull adds MPH's to the top speed - must be like a step that reduces the wetted area, but is tricky to handle the boat and some owners sand it off.
-
Re finger hook. I'm told it was in response to guys hangin V6's on em'n blowin em over.
-
Congratulations on your new hot rod, please be safe. Curious to know what makes the Allison's so fast, is the hull profile much different or is it simply because it is so light?
Allison have a narrow pad that the boat rides on. Accordingly, skill is necessary to keep it on the pad. The boats are years in designing, with test runs, back to hull modification, etc, until everything is right. Then use of quality materials - and no wood.
-
Another thing is, it's a purty deep vee. Lot deeper than the Baja or C500. Reckon the key is to balance it up on the pad. And don't come off!...
Funny, but now that I own this contraption. Everyone and anyone feels compelled to tell me their Allison horror stories ...?
Regardless. 'Fore I go to bed/pass out, I just wanted to say that I have the baddest effin tachometer outa any of y'all! Good night ...
-
My CV is over 650 lbs ...
I feel fat and unattractive now ...
If you can spin your V4 up to 14,000 RPM's with out it coming apart, I want you to build me one next !
-

Legend has it guy that raced it turned 10.5K on nitrous. We won't be testing that theory anytime soon ...
However the 'recall' feature is kinda nice.
-
Doug, what does the bottom of the hull look like? Straight? Scratch free? Sharp edges at chines and back?
-
Doug, what does the bottom of the hull look like? Straight? Scratch free? Sharp edges at chines and back?
Just dialed in and freshly painted. Looks great. Nice and sharp. Though I ain't real happy with the creamy 'pastel' color ... Oh well, beggars cain't be choosers.
-
A good hull design and its condition means you can build the rest of the boat and not worry about the expense because you have a winner at the end of the project.
-

The bottom is perfect David. Never been in the water. I'll fix that ...
Just about got the string steering out. Seat out. Questionable area in the floor aft of the seat, under the fuel cell. Wasn't planning on that. Hope it ain't worse than it appears?
-
Only blemish below the rubrail are the holes from the string steering pulleys/u-bolts. Now I gotta figger out what to plug/cover em with.
-

Skill?! Uh oh ...
-
Fwiw. More I analize this Allison hull. More I see what the lines of it are intended to do. Ain't near's purty as say a Glastron, or Carlson. But if'n ya stare at it long enough ya start to realize what the designers had in mind. All kinda curves converging here'n there'n what not.
-
Many complex lines, but all with a purpose.
-
More pictures of 15' Allisons
-
That's awesome Doug!
A couple questions...
How's your life insurance written?
Do you think your 140 monster can spin 10k?
Maybe we are on different boating paths as I wan a faster yet heavier boat not a lighter one.
Besides I always say "Safety's third" so all of the above really doesn't matter cause you certainly have the looking cool and going warp speed handled. :)
-
Doug be sure to put a kill switch on. Just wondering where you drive your boat at high speed. I thought everything is no wake around there. My friend/neighbor who sold his CVX 16 moved to Ft Meyers from Nebraska. We need to let you get to work now.
-
Thanks for the pics David. Gives me some ideas for paint/decals.
Forgot to mention I also picked up a nosecone/lwp:
-

Lee County (Ft Myers) has a crapload of no wake zones. Yet has the highest number of Manatee killed by boat strikes. Meaning: MANATEE ZONES DON'T PROTECT MANATEE!!!
South Sarasota County isn't near as restricted. Though technically the speed limit in the ICW is 25 ...
Kill switch on dash.
-
Do you think your 140 monster can spin 10k?
Supposed to be good for 8. Not sure I'm gonna rush right out and test that theory ...
-
I'd love to hear that drilled mid at 8000. Well actually just about any RPM is good. Sweet sound.
-
Well the C500 is moving to a new home tomorrow. Ron and his cousin Mark have almost finished Ron's CVX16, so I guess they figured while they're on a roll ...
That's the good news. Bad news is the Allison's gonna need a lil floor work aft. Wasn't expecting that. Hope it's the last surprise.
On the bright side, Ron's bringing along a '79 115 Erude that was on his CVX. Says he has no use for it. Condition unknown. Turns over. If'n I can make it run gonna hang it on the BAJA and sell as a package. With the galv trailer the Ally's currently on.
Got the string steering out. What a pita that was! Gauges/switches just about out, if it ever stops raining ... Looks like everything has plugs/connectors. Just need to mark the leads and disassemble?
-
Doug, two recommendations:
(1) Change the topic of this thread to "Allison 15' Project"
(2) Buy a 26" Raker Prop - don't think you can bend your 23" SRX to the steep pitch you need for the Allison.

Ironically Ron says he has a stock 24 Raker. Figger the boys down at Burris oughta be able to whack a couple inches into it for me? Fwiw Weiler thinks once I get the nose cone/lwp installed, might actually turn that Ron Hill 30.
-
Sounds good. I gave you misinformation on a 26" Raker. They only come in the 14.5 diameter. The 13 1/2's only go up to 24".

A Ron Hill Chopper in 30" on a 100 ci 140 making power on a boat that is under 1000 pounds ready to run with you in it. Nope I don't see that being an issue. I'd try it before dropping a dime on the 24.

Figger even with 15 gals of fuel, she oughta be under 1000lbs
-
I see that the Quicksilver Lightspeed (Laser II modified to fit OMC's) is made in a 26" pitch. That may be your ticket Doug, but as I stated in an earlier thread, I tested a Lightspeed against a Raker, and the Raker was much faster.
http://www.boatpropellerwarehouse.com/product/29515/lightspeed-13-1-2-x-26-quicksilver-rh-propeller-qs5126x (http://www.boatpropellerwarehouse.com/product/29515/lightspeed-13-1-2-x-26-quicksilver-rh-propeller-qs5126x)
Watch out for bargains, I picked up a new 22" Lightspeed for $210.
-
Well we put the lid back on the C500, strapped it down, blew up the tires and off she went.
'79 Motor looks like we may be able to resurrect it. Appears unmolested. I just happen to have some hi-comp heads, and a bubble butt, and reed stuffers, and type III carbs. Hmm ...
But I gotta fix a floor in a Allison first.
-
Floor out. Just got a lil sanding to do around the edge. Stringer and everything else looks good. Thank God.
Rot was under one of the fuel tank mounts.
-
Okay we got all the decals off. What a freakin mess. Pulled up a buncha paint. Why does it do that in some places and not others?!
Plan is to strip her all the way down to the blue flake and repaint. OR ... wrap it. Just be the deck. Lot of stress cracks to try'n hide. And there ain't a whole lot of acreage to cover, figger that might could be a viable option?
Regardless. What're y'all usin for paint stripper these days?
Also found several 4-5 lb chunks of lead screwed onto the lil "sub-floor" area under the bow. Y'know those are comin out ...
-
" Also found several 4-5 lb chunks of lead screwed onto the lil "sub-floor" area under the bow. "
Seems kind of light / small for any kind of balance weight ?
Any guess what there for ?
-
"Also found several 4-5 lb chunks of lead screwed onto the lil "sub-floor" area under the bow."
Being a drag boat, the weights in front were meant to get the bow down quickly off the starting line (a guess)
-
4.5 and 5.5 lbs respectively. There are several more.
-
"Also found several 4-5 lb chunks of lead screwed onto the lil "sub-floor" area under the bow."
Is it something Allison did for balance ?
Or PO added them ?
-
Probly like David suggested. Keep the bow down during launch.
One thing's fer sure. More time I spend sanding, the less appreciative I am of them fancy schmancy angles in the deck ...
Original flake reminds me of your boat Gregg.
-
That's kind of a neat look

You might have started a new trend in flake paint jobs Doug !
Ya thinkin' of a different color ?
-
That's kind of a neat look
Y'know now that you mention it ...
Hey mebbe where the stripes are really posed to go ...?
-
Ya thinkin' of a different color ?
Actually at this point I'm leanin toward a wrap. Just the deck I mean. Lotta stress cracks to fix and pray they don't come back.
Wraps are a lot more forgiving. Plus there ain't a whole lot of acreage to cover?

Cool stuff Gregg. Dig the lil tunnel hull.

Picked this lil gem up earlier at Ron's. 24 Raker. Appears to be unmolested. God I love the barter system! When it works in my favor ...

Doug dont waste time sandin that crap off just go get some Citristrip , save your self some torture.
-
The 24" Raker looks like new. Could be shinier though. LOL
-
Hear ya Gil. But I figger this way at least I can save money on a stripper ...
Yo David. Looks a lil better after some never dull. Mostly over spray from sittin in Mark's shop. Couple microscopic dings but otherwise in nice shape.
Might just stick it on the Baja next time out. But I 'magine it'll need a lil more pitch whacked into it. Specially on the Ally?
-
Only $563 new at Iboats. Free shipping! ...

Doug, I was going to mention last night on the fb...you going to run that steering wheel? I have 3 or 4 in my basement if you need any parts for it. I don't have an extra chrome center cap but I've got everything else. I think mine all came off Rinkers.
-

No particular wheel in mind yet Ray. One that was on it went with the string steering set up.
-
Ok. I'm going to run that same wheel on my CV. It's a Detmar like most Glastron steering wheels, but it's a nice smaller diameter over the faux wood. I've got 3/4" round taper hubs on all of them. Lemme know and I'll send you whatever you might need. I've got a whole box of spare wheel parts.
Oh, I think a place up in Jax makes the Allison bucket seat shells, too. They look great, not sure how comfortable they are.

Thanks Ray. Got the seat shell part covered. Needs a lil lipstick but it oughta work okay. Lemme tell ya I'm gonna be stuffin some foam between it and my butt.

20 minutes into first coat of Citrustrip. Seems to be workin okay.
Just read the directions. Says avoid using in hot sun. Thought it looked like it was dryin purty quick ...
-
Citrus goo worked alright I guess. Ain't real impressed. Course I did put it on in the sun, and then a lil later it rained ... So I reckon I shouldn't be too disappointed. Does have a "pleasant citrus aroma" ...
Did somethin funky to the black primer down a couple coats. Had me scared chitless at first, but looks like it'll sand off. Gel underneath appears okay. Phew!
Sho was purty way back when, weren't she?
-

Doug , to get into the nooks and cranny's smear some of the goo on wait a little then use course steel wool to clean the paint out .
You gonna spray some flake back on to it , the blue / black base sure looks cool ?
-
I dig the blue too Gil, but boy I dunno. There're an awful lot of stress cracks in this thing, led a tough life.
Don says he's got almost a gallon of some super duper white he'd let me use. Thinkin shoot the deck white, then lay some blue metal flake vinyl stripes? Mebbe a couple on either side of the hull as well? (Like the one pictured earlier with the Chrysler on it?)
Got some more goo on. Yeah I know it's hot and sunny. Windy today too so now I'm violatin TWO directions. But dang it I just cain't wait!
Lookin like two applications oughta just about do it.
-
Gettin there: Lemme tell ya that black primer or whatever it is is some tough stuff. Probly shouldn't even bother sandin it off. But I cain't resist the blue flake, or what's left of it, underneath
-
Blue or Red ...
Looks cool no matter how ya do it ...

According to Don they now have some newfangled kinda 1/8" tape with a thin wire buried inside. Lay that down first, then lay your vinyl on top. Then ya ya yank up on the wire and it cuts/trims the vinyl perfectly. Brilliant! Why didn't I thinka that?
Fwiw I'm kinda diggin a reverse kinda stripe like the one(s) I invented ...

Works for me !

This is a priceless Allison with a rich history Joe. Already got a rat boat That said. I am poor. So we'll see what happens.

I thought 220 too David. Cain't seem to find none nowhere. Kinda like Bunny Bread I spose. Used to be my favorite, now I'm told they don't make it no more. I think this is all part of a conspiracy intended to drive me completely insane.
Y'know Bunny made hamburger and hot dog buns well as sandwich bread. All good. What happened? Used to tell the kids Bunny Bread was made from real bunnies. Spose that had anything to do with it? ...
-
Which reminds me. Did y'all hear bout the rabbit escaped from the lab? Was befriended by some wild ones. Hopped around and ate carrots and reproduced with them all day long. That night announced he had to go back. His new friends exclaimed, "Why!?" He said, "I really need a cigarette" ...
But I digress

Try to stay focused Doug ...
Yes I know Gregg, but there are just so many distractions these days. Oreo's made in Nova Scotia, Twinkies banned. The Bunny Bread debacle. Where will it all end?!
-
Okay I'm back. Imo there is no better close quarter scraping tool for softened paint on fiberglass, than my patented sawed off plastic chopstick. If'n it starts gettin dull just nip a lil off'n the end ...
-
Today's progress: Whatever that black stuff is they laid it on thick. And it kinda thumbs its nose at the Citrus strip.
-
You mentioned "rat boat"...

Fwiw the present consensus is to scrape off all the white. And as much of the black mud as possible. Then lay a buncha clear on top.
-
I don't know about covering that beautiful blue flake. I'd try and save as much as possible and work some sort of striping vinyl to cover the troubled areas.

"The present consensus is to scrape off all the white. And as much of the black mud as possible."
Yes, you would not want to call your boat "Tar Heels" or "Black Stuff"
-
Still some flake left. But the farther aft ya go, the worse it gets. Somebody burned through alotta corners. And it weren't me!
-
I'm facing fierce lobbying from the rat-rod PAC. What to do, what to do ...
-
i kno i already voted...
twice
but through some clear at that thing and run it, that is a cool look.
if i ever find a contender (and have $), i would run it like that
-
My vote is rat boat!!!!!!
-
Put it in the water!
Next winter clean it up and make it the beauty that it originally was.
David
-
I am voting again. Run her as is and make her the beauty she deserves at a later date.
-
We'll see. Got mosta the white off. Now on to the black mud. Dude sprayed the chit on like bedliner.
-
Sadly she's been the victim of a lil overzealous sanding throughout the years. Weren't me!
-
I kinda like it like it is...

I agree. Go with the rat boat!
-
Make her run first, then make her pretty. Never know if the setup works for you until ya try. At least the glass wont rust while your playing. You might just find some stress areas that need some glass work anyway, better to find the faults without the makeup. Just my $0.02
-
Yes, put it together the best you can unfinished, mount the motor, and test for balance, motor height, determination of the best tank location, seat location, any imperfections in the hull, all which needs to be done in the unfinished state, and to determine how much money should be put into the project.
-
Thought the black stuff was under the blue flake ?
Paint your boat with bed liner ? ... Shouldn't surprise me after seeing some of the hack jobs on CL ...
Ya ... clean it up and run it !
-
Ya just know if ya fix her up, ya'll just run into something. If it ain't broke, don't mess with it.
-
Thought the black stuff was under the blue flake ?
It is. Black base, then flake. But then a thick coat of some kinda black primer/surfacer on top. Chit's difficult to sand, and seems impervious to citrus strip.

Y'know this is kinda like a treasure hunt. Least that's what I keep tellin myself
Dash and splash well area are gonna be interestin. Transom's still got some flake on it. Why they didn't shoot the stern along with the resta the hull's a mystery. Asked Don about it'n he said it musta been beer thirty ...
Regardless. I honestly think the citrus strip rearranged the molecules or somethin in that black primer. I member when I was usin some acetone to get the last of the glue from the stickers off. Rag kept gettin black. Now acetone won't even touch the stuff.
Ah well, back to the old grind ...
-
Ya just know if ya fix her up, ya'll just run into something.
That's not very nice Jerry. And ya wonder why nobody likes you ...
-
Doug , till ya figure out what to do with it resto or rat , being in Fla you can always go this route .

After many sleepless nights, and consulting with my financial adviser. A decision has been made. Gonna sand her down to what's left of the flake then clear coat. Figger if'n the stress cracks reappear they oughta be easy to spot ...

Nah, y'know I ain't into all that trendy chit Gil. Every ahole snowbird's got a "pirate" sticker on their car. Or the even more annoying "Salt Life" version. Yes! Please regale me with tales of your life on the sea?
For cripe sake ...

Doug - I'm surprised (a bit) by how quickly you're moving though the stripping using Citristrip...the only reason I say that is that its recommended that the product be on for 24 hours, with a minimum 1/8" think coat to keep it wet & working.
I'm wondering if you're getting that thick black stuff b/c it just hasn't had enough time to stay wet & working?
-
I've never used Citri Strip, and for the most part, I avoid strippers, the paint kind fellas. Have had issues with stripper residue causing problems with primers and top coats. Is there a cleaner-deactivator that you use after the Citri Strip? As for any finish, I wouldn't bother to put any clear or anything on for now, maybe a urethane primer to make it all one color.
Now this is going back 30 years, and I suppose its the same thing, but I used to deal with a lot of glass on VW Baja's and buggies, and the glass had a gelcoat that was very durable and allowed for a proper smooth automotive finish to be applied to it. Point is, that stuff was much harder to sand than any primers or gelcoat, and it came only in white and black. Was wondering if that is what you are busy fighting with. I remember the last thing ya wanted to do was break through it, because nothing else stuck to the glass the same way. Bondo would pop, and primers required much more work to match the surface texture.
-
You just wash the Citristrip off with soap and water...its non-toxic (not that I'd drink the stuff)...very common product in wood working.
-
Citrus strip only softens the black goo to the point ya can knock a lil off with a 3M pad. Not soft enough to scrape. I dunno bout the 24 hr claim. Think it does it's best work earlier on?
-
Hey got a line on another one. David? Anybody?
-
"Ran great last time out!" "Just requires a lil tlc" "Trailer needs paint." ...
-
Wait til I apply 25 coats of Liquid Glass to that boat. It will look like a million dollars!
-
I dunno Dave. I reckon that one might be needin a lil Liquid A** beforehand ...
-
"Ran great last time out!" "Just requires a lil tlc" "Trailer needs paint." ...
Now that is truly some funny stuff right there, sounds just like a Craigslist ad.
-

It works best when it hazes over on the top and seals out air, but it has to stay wet underneath that skim layer, so it has to be very thick too. Very common product in woodworking, and yeah, you have to leave it on to do its work.
If I'm stripping wood, I always let it sit overnight. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 coats & nights to get everything off.

Well, yeah, it is best in a garage or controlled environment. Sounds like the black Goo isn't going easily, so probably wouldn't help anyway.

Lil progress on the splashwell area tonight but not much. Had to bail. Done wore a hole in my middle finger. And, least for me, that's a very important finger ...
Been conducting tests with the orange goo vs black. The black goo's kickin orange's butt. Man it's thicker'n snot back there.
However, on the bright side, there's still alotta flake left underneath?
-

Y'all do know who invented, what I like to call, desperado salesmanship. Don't you?
Stuff like: "Only X amount of days before armageddon", etc.
Extra credit for the first correct answer.
-
Rain rain go away! Does make the truck and boats look good ...
-
Speaking of trucks it appears we'll be replacing the starter on the Ranger tomorrow. Can ya magine, 250k and worn out already ...
-
Dig those fancy car Ramps, certainly safer than cinder blocks. Stop by, I'll let ya use the lift.
-
Well when my buddy stopped over this am to bring me to the parts store, it dawned on us that we could still push start it. (Duh.) Got her up on the drive on ramps after that. Made the job a lot easier.
Had the old one out'n the new one in in bout 45 min.
Yes, a lift would be nice.
-
Started grindin on the corner of floor that was delaminated. Not happy. A lil damp under there. Thinkin I'm gonna have to grind a bunch of that glass back to let her dry out?
Guess it's to be expected but I'm not a happy camper right now.
-
In the interest of 'transparency', I must share some sad news. It has just come to my attention the boat is a counterfeit. Identical to an Allison in every way, except the dashboard. It is in fact a "Speedcraft" out of Texas. Danged if'n I ain't been hoodwinked ...
In response to this news I will now be calling her "Fallison" (fake Allison). Or "Phallison", for phony Allison perhaps? (Hope that one makes it past the censors ...)
Not a happy camper right about now.
-
Dig those fancy car Ramps
Yo Mike, if'n ya look close you'll see the top layer is the transom corners from the 153.
-
Did the seller of the boat think it was an Allison and was it sold under those pretenses?
I would be disappointed with a lost of trust in mankind.
But did the boat do well in it's racing career? Does the seller know if the boat was as good as an Allison?
My heart goes out to you Doug. Allison is a prestigious name.
-
Boat did very well in it's racing career David. Least as well as the Allisons. But it's just not the same.
I think Don knew it wasn't legit, but he sure didn't allude to it.
That said the purchase agreement is somewhat flexible. As in no money has yet changed hands. When we hooked her up to the truck all he said was, "You have to let me drive it sometimes ..."
Don's a great guy and he's helped me a lot with the Baja project so I ain't gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. However I am feelin a lil 'stung', and disillusioned. Particularly cuz I wasn't expecting this much work to do.
Plus now what'm I gonna do with all the "Allison" bling I just ordered? And this new tattoo!? ...
-
Okay I got one for ya: "Dear forum. Replaced starter and a tire went flat. What should I check next?"
-
Sorry to hear about you disappointing news, maybe you can work out something with the seller? I suppose the good in all that is you found out before you completed a full restoration. Still a neat looking boat, and would still make a perfect rat boat.
-
Let's leave a void with no drainage under the floor. Yeah, that's it ...
-
Well there's yer problem!
-
More on the 'Speedcraft', and other Allison splashes:
Legend has it Allison takes a unique approach to dealing with counterfeiters. #1) Pay us royalties, or else. And #2) Conspicuously display a plaque/tag stating "This boat built with permission of the Allison Boat Co." Or something to that effect.
Mine must be missin the plaque ...
-
Well there's yer problem!
Yeah ya think!? Duh! Least Glastron put drain plugs in em, that nobody knew were there ...
-
Q: What's the easiest way to fix a rotten stringer?
A: Easy, just lay a new one next to it'n glass over all the rotten chit ...
-
This is the 'floor' I was able to pull out aft of my cut on the stb side. Naturally the port side refuses to budge.
God what have I gotten myself into now?
-
Gee look. Some soggy foam thrown in for good measure. Aw, ain't that nice ...
Y'know this all raises the frightening question, "How's the transom?" Looks good ... Sounds okay when ya tap on it. Poked around inside the motor holes'n didn't feel any mushiness. The scab stringers look all right?
Considering the contraption was run with nitro motors twice the hp of mine, and the transom's still there. Perhaps I'm overreacting?
Regardless. Recent events have certainly turned my outlook on the project upside down ...
-
I'm currently considering installing aluminum stringers 'tween the new and old. Just to complete the bastardization ...
-
I've discovered 'Speedcraft' boats are alive'n well, in Malta. And they're turning out some lovely models.
Here's an eye catcher from the Malta Boat Show:
edit. Fwiw I recommend we ship Malta kayaks and SUP's ahead of anymore glass'n resin. Let's nip this thing in the bud ...
-
I don't really know what to write Doug. That's some bad luck streak though. Sorry about your boat and your truck. I however am confident you will fix them both.

Ehh, ain't nuthin cain't be fixed with the right tools Chris.
The irony in all of this of course is the freakin hull is beautiful. Knife sharp strakes'n chines, plenty of paint. Only problem's with the turd that lies within ...
Ah well ...
-
Fix it right Doug and be done with it ...
We have all opened the can of worm's to find .... OH %@#*%@ !
Cool little boat well worth saving, even if it isn't an Allison.
-
This evenings progress:
Naturally the original stringers were tacked to the side of the strake, so gettin the last lil bit of wood out's gonna be fun.
Floor under the seat's gonna come out too but that's as far fwd as I go. I don't know what's fwd of that and I don't care! Heh heh heh. Hey I can live with a tiny triangle of 1/4" ply regardless of condition ...
On the bright side the new stringers are well sealed and look good. Performed biopsy's on the knees and transom and got nice clean dry wood. Phew!
Plus I bet I've removed about 30 lbs of soggy wood'n excess glass. So we're gettin back to her fightin weight, which I'm told was 330 lbs. "Dry" ...
-

From the looks of things it's been a long time since it was "dry". Keep up the good work Doug and you'll have her on the water soon.
-
Thanks for the encouragement GJ. I need it!
The stark irony in all of this is: By the time I get done screwin around with this phony Allison. I coulda been finished with the C500. Hell I'd already done mosta the dirty work?
No. I gotta give it away'n take on this soggy pos.
Reckon the thing that irks me most is I could never, in good conscience, decorate this boat like a Allison. I reckon some would. Looks real close. But personally I'd be afraid a dude with a real Allison might happen by'n out me ...
-
But personally I'd be afraid a dude with a real Allison might happen by'n out me ...
Well Doug if you're afraid of being outed just stay in the closet.
-
Please do not hang any Glastron badges on it.
-
Paint it all white, then apply black letters to the side that say "BOAT". Keep your bling for a real Allison, I'm certain you'll happen upon one later. Personally I have no druthers anymore about boats, cars, or motorcycles. You don't have to own a certain brand or model to hang out. Be honest, if ya go out with the Allison gang, tell them what it is, most won't care, and those that would aren't worth hanging out with. Better yet, smoke em with you rat boat, they'll come around quick enough.
-
Dug mosta the rotten soggy chit out. Completely baffled at why it appears the original stringers were bedded in foam? What in tarnation's up with that?!
-
Talked to a guy who used to race the boat. Said it was purty beat up when he got. Used to have to add 40 lbs to make 1050 for comp V4. Hence the lead up front.
Said as the hull got soggier he could gradually remove some of the weight. Well I reckon that's one way to do it ...?
-
I'm guessin once she's drained out the hull oughta weigh a lil under half the Baja. Which I'm told is 725-750 lbs. Dry ...
-
Please do not hang any Glastron badges on it.
Whuddya think ...?
-
You're going to change emblem to "Phlastron" 'cause it's also a phony Glastron. :)
-
"Falsetron"?
-
"Falsetron"?
That will work. I like falsies.
-
Q: What's the easiest way to fix a rotten stringer?
A: Easy, just lay a new one next to it'n glass over all the rotten chit ...
Look at it this way Doug....another opportunity to take some weight outta the boat!
Had no idea you were digging this deep on this one. Thought it was just the finish. Well maybe you didn't either, huh?
-
Believe there was a few company's that copied that hull, maybe even legally.
Most didn't copy deck ...
Maybe not the real thing ... but still a very cool race boat ...
Bet if it was a Allison you would have paid much much more then you got it for ... and still had to repair wood and gel/flake.
You know that lil sucker gonna be a ROCKET when your done !
-
I would call it: Alibison
Or Put a Sticker on the Side: My Other Boat Is An Allison
Doug, a boat is a boat. What matters is how you fix it up. You did a tremendous job in rebuilding your Evinrude to go 66.7 MPH and you will do a great job in getting this boat operable and going so fast that any boat name or logo on the side would be a blur to those watching you pass them.
-
I'm with Plugcheck. Name it BOAT.
I too am in the camp of hey if you are here with us who cares what your ride is. Those that are strict about "it has to be ________ " aren't worth hanging out with in the end.
Look at us here. Does any one have a beef with a non-glastron? A non-outboard? Even a non-watercraft? Or best yet a non-Minnesota'er? I'll chat with just about anyone with a like mind about just about anything except personal watercraft.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. No Ross I hadn't planned on getting anywhere near this involved with the resto. But que sera ...
Been blessed with some cool(er) temps and low(er) humidity, so I figger better git her done now.
Got her 99% gutted, just some cleanup round the edges. Thank God for my Dremel multi-max and the old Dewalt grinder. Don't attempt a resto without both these tools.
Hope is to have her ready for glass and/or primer-filler by the end of the day tomorrow.

Ehh, it's also Best Of All Times.
That's why we do it Ross.

Been thinking....
If you're going to keep coming to the meets here, you should have a boat here. Something you dont have to worry about etc.
Maybe a piece of plywood with a fishin boat seat and 140 J/E?
-
Came up with another potential name btw:
"Nahlison" ...

Perhaps Ross. But I been purty lucky so far. Got to drive David's, and scratch Jeff's in '14. Deuceman hooked me up last year.
What mo could a po floda boy ask for?
Meanwhile:
-
Look'n clean all the way back to the transom.
How's your knees?
-
My knees are raw'n hurt like hell. Along with the rest of my body. One's in the boat look okay ...
Regardless. Decided it might be wise to measure the boat. 16' 6" which means it's a copy of an R16. Don thought it was a R15, but he was off by a foot ...
-
Seriously considerin diggin the new old stringers out'n puttin a new pair back where they belong. Stuck inside the strake. Like the original ones. What the hell I come this far?
Think it'd stiffen her up a bit. Plus it'd gimme 4 more inches widthwise. Just enough to squeeze my 9 gal tank in lengthwise, side to side. And still leave room for the cooler. Which is very important ...
-
Hey I was just thinkin. A boat that weighs less than half as much as another, with the same HP. Oughta go at least twice as fast. Right?
133.4 here I come! WooHoo!!!
-
The only way that will happen is if you hitch it behind a Corvette.
-

Ya, I'd have to agree. Peel those outer stringers out of there and put new ones in where they should be. They would peel out pretty easy with a vibrating blade. Grind out the residue material where your going to lay your new stringers. Although your going to have to play with the height to make the floor fit flat; that will be a hassle. I used kiln dried brown treated stingers; resin stuck to it.
Your past the unpleasant part for the most part, I found the reconstruction a lot more fun than the clean out.
David
-
Nah OFG. I think the unpleasantness is probly gonna continue for just a lil while longer ...
Eh well, ain't got nothin better to do ...
Good news is we've preserved, the unbroken parts of, the floor'n stringers from the 153. All composite laminated w/biax both sides.
I'm envisionin a Nahlison with the spine of a bad azz Glastron?
-
This just in: Weight for the R15 & 16 in '83. 340 and 390 lbs respectively. Think mine's already lighter. When I can pick it up? It must be purty light!
And if'n it ain't it will be by the time I get finished ...
-
Okay I ripped out the misplaced stringers. Knees are actually in the right place. But ya know what? We've come this far ... so they're gonna be replaced with composite as well.
Now I gotta break out Big Bertha again ... See what you guys got me into?
Y'know I blame it all on David.
-
For future reference ... This is what an Allison dash looks like:
-
I was just going to suggest as long as you're in it this far to get rid of the spackle paint on the floor, but looking at the pic of the Allison dash I see spackle is original and correct.
-

That one's purported to be in original condition. 13 footer.
I dunno, that's a lil small. Even for me ...
-
Today's Progress Report: None ...
Please stay tuned ...
-
Got the knees free from the hull. If I could fold em inward without runnin into the center stringer they'd probly break off. But of course not. So it's back in there with a grinder. (This grindin chit's gettin old ...)
-
Knee and stringer removal nearly completed. Just need to grind off a lil bit of remaining tissue. (That'll be the really dusty part) Yippee! [cough]

Call the boat "Creative Canvas" in big bold letters on each side and write the boat off on your tax return as an advertising expense.
-
Name I been kickin round forever is, "MisCreative"
In any regard. Got her all cleaned up 'cept for a few inches fwd of the transom.
Gotta pattern a splashwell curtain for Ron in the AM, but I'll be back on her by tomorrow afternoon. With any luck I'll have her ready to start mockin some pieces up.
-
Got the knees cut out and ready to laminate. 3/8" Nidacore sandwiched with biax. Makin em a lil taller and longer to start.
Many thanks to Mike Muscato aka "Dago" for the Nidacore! Gave me three 2 x 4 sheets, and another with just a tiny rectangle out of one corner.
Oughta be more than enough to beef up the transom and do the floor. Have plenty of biax & mat. Just need to pick up some resin tomorrow. WooHoo!
-
Is Nidacore anything like plasCore?

Very much so but has a almost waxy feeling on both sides. When you look at it real close it has a bunch of little diamond shaped dimples on the surface.

And my Radiologist is devastating too. Well as my CNA, Luba, from Russia. So things could be worse?

Hope you're feeling better Doug. At least your eyes are getting a good work out. I'll take some of Luigi's Italian Ice if you don't mind.

You're welcome to it John. Appears all they have is lemon, which is not my favorite flavor.

Lemon, I was hoping for orange. Anyway, I'm optimistic you'll be eating real food, real soon.

See what happens when the Glastron Gods find out you are working on a non-Glastron boat.

Well at least your appetite for the staff has not diminished. Seems a good sign.

Almost sad. My nurse today is Yelena, another foxy Russian.

Might just be the pain meds, come back for follow up and they may look like Zorba, just saying......
-
Looks like they're not gonna cut me loose til tomorrow. Bummer!
-
Are ya feeling better ?
-
Are they telling you you're going to have to deal with this the rest of your life or what sets it off? Nasty stuff according to Nurse Joni.
-
Well I was set free last night. Put in a whole day at the shop today. Man am I whooped.
Yes Ross it appears this is my cross to bear. Wish I knew what the 'trigger' was. Avoided all of the likely suspects since the last go round a couple years ago.
Joni ain't kidding. Feels like someone's twisting on yer guts, tryin to pull em out. I'll take a broken bone over this any day. It's a real sob.
However, besides dealing with it, and a raging bladder infection. I feel like a hunnert bucks!
-
Are they telling you to stay away from food with seeds, hulls etc. Like popcorn?
Joni gave me the impression, that is the kind of stuff that gets lodged in your gut? Gets worse from there. I am sure you already know more then you want to.
-
Ya the usual suspects are seeds & nuts. Corn (my favorite). Apples are okay but not the skin.
Really spicy foods, etc.
-
Well just in case anyone was wondering why things have come to a grinding halt. I'm laid up with this damn diverticulitis again. Someone please shoot me!
You sound like my Mom. Simple little mistakes can cause weeks worth of "I want to die!" I told her since she can no longer use quite a few digestive aids (needs something like Prilosec for heartburn/reflux issues) that she should also consider besides passing up so many other things that she needs to also cut gluten out as well.
In the last few years I have become a damn near expert on what one can eat with these weird exceptions that you have. Simple stuff even. I feel for you. This is no joke people.
-
Though maybe a little gut pain may be favorable to me right now verses my massive upper left back pain, left shoulder pain, left upper and lower arm pain, left wrist constant cracking and dull feeling and my numb thumb, first and second fingers on my left hand. I'm 2 weeks in and no end in sight. Oh and my right leg hamstring is very tight. To the point of charlie horse kind of tight. Maybe June 1st I'll go see my doctor but until then all I can do is *Censored * about the crap healthcare I have thanks to the ACA. Well that is if I don't stroke out or have a heart attack from my 165/111 blood pressure and current 92bpm heart resting rate.
Hey the weather is looking better maybe hitting the lake will help with all of these issues. Well one can hope. I so want to see if my new Taurus can tow my Carlson. I'm about 800 pounds over it's tow rating but really only plan on driving it locally on nearly flat roads.

Meanwhile ... back at the Medical Testing Facility:
