V175 work
« on: April 02, 2011, 08:07:32 AM »
Since I'll be working on this one from now until it gets dunked and after that too, I've decided to try to collect all the various threads pertaining to my projects for this boat in one spot, since they are spread out all over both in time and location. I'm going to try to assemble it in chronological order as well so there will be some duplication from the past. As far as I know, all I can do is cut and paste. It will be tedious but it will be easier for me (and anyone else) to find any info anyone provides.
I bet there is a way to link the other threads from here.
Gregg? Doran?

First, a couple of pics of the subject before I brought it home.

So I received my new cable last week and worked on it some here and there until I needed some hardware. At work we use mostly stainless on our products so I can usually get what I need there.
I bought a new cable clamp along with the cable becuase I knew the thing they had on there wasnt right. I realized what it was the other day. Its part of a slide bolt lock for a fence gate! More rigging went on here.
Today I am going to try to figure out the throttle cable too. I know it is not right. As it stands right now, it appears that with the lever in the neutral position, the carb is half way open. Pushing it forward opens it up and pulling it back beyond neutral should open the throttle up again for reverse but its trying to push it past the idle position at the carb.

What program do you guys use to add arrows and text to pics? Alll I have is MS picture editor.

Ordered my carpet this week. Needless to say, I wont be installing that until I am done messing around with the engine.
I didnt end up getting exactly what I wanted. I could only get 16 oz in the color I decided to go with. I looked at Corinthian and they have some nice stuff but most of it comes in 7 1/2-8 1/2 feet wide and its sold by the square foot. Also didnt quite find a color I was happy with. Most of it was too light. I would have ended up with alot of waste and I didint want to spend 200.00 on carpet at this time. I ended up getting it from Overtons. This color wasnt offered in 20 oz. It will be fine.
I didnt care for the original green  nor did I see anything like it, so going brown.

I'm pulling hardware off of the transom to make it easier to work in the finish, as well as re-seal everything. I thought the exhaust tips were chrome plated steel but they are aluminum. I've started working on those but will take them to my buffing wheel to finish them. I've done a little wet sanding to get the paint and crud off and thats about it.

I have been messing with the new forward/reverse cable and throttle too and I think I have the throttle working properly but I am not sure about the whole things operation.

So question for the jet guys... I thought you were supposed to be able to go from forward to reverse pretty much at will because there are no gear changes to do that but as it sits today, in order for me to be able to throtle up with the cup/diverter closed (almost closed) I have to disengage the F/R cable via the disengage lever. Is that correct?  ??? ???
When I bring the throttle control back to neutral, it will not move aft until it is disengaged. I read about a technique where by going back and forth, you could get in and out of slips and other spots but the way mine is operating now, you'd need to reach down and disengage the linkage. If that is not how its suppose to operate, then I'm at a loss.
Also above and beyond that, does this sound right? It appears that the cup/diverter starts to close as you throttle back. Sounds normal until I thought about it more. Now that is going to start to divert water forward and create drag and slow you down. Not all bad unless you are cruising at half throttle and its partially closed. I would think it should be wide open back there.
I'm a bit confused.

Something is out of adjustment. You should be able to go from forward to reverse without touching the neutral button.
.. it is what it is ... and that is how it should be!

Argh. Thats what I thought but I dont see how its possible since there is only so much travel in the forward reverse cable. The reason I can not move the control beyond neutral is because the cable is at the end of its stroke...bottomed out. (Diverter is closed) It can go beyond that point. I spent a couple of hours messing with this yesteday and I'm at a loss.

On a better note, my new manifolds and risers were delivered on Friday. I wont be installing them until I finish up other stuff in and around the engine bay but am looking at how I'm going to go about plumbing. I assumed the port left open on the top was for water but I poked a piece of wire in there and it goes right into the exhaust. Good thing I checked! I dont know what that would be for.
Needless to say, I'll be plugging that and using others.
With all the tools I have and about 10 sets of allen wrenches, I've discovered I do not have a hex wrench the size I need to remove/install those plugs. Think I can buy just one?

Ross - I know that boat has given you a few headaches but I think your gonna have a lot of fun with it once you get it on the water. Nothing like a V8! Looks like you bit the bullet on new exhaust manifolds.

Yes I did finally and with it, more headaches but not too serious yet. I have to figure out how I am going to plumb it and how to get the plugs out.

Question for Chris, or Brian or Scotty...How far back does your throttle lever move? Maybe the fact that I am out of forward/reverse travel is what is suppose to limit the throttle to some low speed in reverse?

I spent a fair amount of time running around looking for fittings to plumb my manifolds. Everything I picked up was the wrong size.  :P
Doesnt help that there are two different hole sizes in the manifolds so some I bought were right for that but wrong hose size.  :(

Havent found the 4 1/2' hardened bolts I need to install them either. 4" is as long as I've found grade 8's in at two different places.
