Those do not look Marine.  Are they standard automotive mufflers? The Marine counter parts would be stainless. I would also think those might break off easily.

Well, perhaps not the most aesthetically pleasing arrangement Ross ...  But it oughta keep the noise police happy.

Question for Mark S......Didnt you take apart your steering rack and do some work to it? My steering is stiff and I've greased it at the fitting near the rear so the helm is all that is left.

Question for Rich..Do you know what Shell Alvania #2 grease might be equivilent too? This is what my book says to use to grease the impeller shaft ball bearings with.
Also Gear oil EP90, is that the common stuff? I assume 90 is the weight?
Thanks

Yes sir, I did.  Take apart being careful of the plastic bushings in the helm, clean, lube and reassemble, works like a champ now.  It's not too complicated, think I have the drawing/parts breakdown here somewhere...(Courtesey Joe Poole, Jr.)

Today I installed my risers and worked on some electrical things too. After I had them on I looked back from a distance trying to see if everything was going to clear and it looked like the motor is off set to Port by maybe an inch? I was crapping my drawers around this time. Either that or the opening in the back is off. I was also concerned about how high things were looking so I decided to put the motor cover in the boat and check out the fit. SInce I dont have the exhaust hoses on yet, I was able to look in from the outside the transom and sure enough, the port side riser was rubbing on the cover. I decided that at least I was going to take the foam out then check again. That stuff would probably smolder if it burned and whats it for? Keep noise in? It has OPEN exhaust! I started removing that and found some would be stoaways that left earlier. Dang mice! I tought maybe the nests were in there when I bought the boat, but recognized the brown paper towels from my dispenser. At least they were "repurposing" materials on hand. Anyway took that stuff out and refitted the cover and it appears only a couple of protrusions on the port side riser are touching. I am hoping they dont get too hot and discolor the cover. I dont think they will. There isnt much else I can do except change back to some log style and that aint happening any time soon. I suppose the water patrol would frown on a guy if they ran with the cover off. Might fall off the seat and get tangled in a belt.  :D

Couple of other things I did when running new hose was to install a valve on the supply line. Since I was told I could run this off a garden hose and not worry about the jet impeller, I needed a way to plumb it so I could do so. I couldnt come up with a way to combine heater hose and garden hose until I thought of those radiator flush kits for cars so I bought one of those just for that tee. Now I can hook up a garden hose and shut the valve so the water doesnt exit the jet housing. This will be good for tuning up, winterizing etc. I dont like having all those breaks in the line however. Just more potential places to leak. I'll have to watch that.
I also decided to move my bildge pump from starboard to port. It was jammed down between the bellhousing and battery and tough to get at and clean. I thought about moving the battery too because it is difficult to get at. Its under the forward/reverse, throttle and steering cable and right below and exhaust hose, but I'd need to build a tray for it and the exhaust would stilll be an issue over there. I was thinking about sticking it under one of the jump seats but the are too low.

One of my biggest accomplishments over the last week was finding a light socket that will work inside the original stern light. I know, not too exciting, but I have been looking for awhile and usually the dimensions I needed to know where not posted and no one could tell me what they were. I tried a couple that I bought and for one reason or another, they wouldnt work. Usually because the socket needs to move up and down when you install the bulb and that would create interference with the internal tab used for mounting it to the mast. This one really bugged me! Now I can check that one off the list. Another PITA

I am having a bit of a problem with the anchors in the floor for the engine cover hinges. From what I can tell, they are the kind of anchors that have some teeth on the top flange to dig into the wood and keep them from rotating. Down below the floor is a part that is threaded and as you tighten the screw, it would colapse the "wings" on the anchor and prevent it from coming back out the hole. Problem is, they were installed after the carpet and when I tore it out, it disloged the flange and now a couple of them are spinning and no longer want to bite into the floor. If I try to remove them to replace them, I am going to end up with a larger hole and have to patch it and patch it good enough to install new anchors, or get by with two of the four kind of holding or try to bond them into place. Any suggetions?
One hinge is broken too so best case, I'll have 3 screws holding it down.

In your earlier post you mentioned running the engine (on the trailer) and not to worry about the pump.  WORRY about the pump!!  You do NOT want to run the pump dry for long.  The bushings and bearings will heat up in a hurry and wear out.  If you do run it on the trailer keep the pump wet as possible by directing a hose up into the intake or at least by keeping that valve you put in open.  I have a similar tee in my inlet hose that I do also hook a hose to to run the engine or should I say START the engine.  I always start it before heading to the ramp but do not run it long.  There is also a packing in the front of the pump by the bell housing that is designed to weep water very slowly.  Do not over tighten the adjuster bolts on it as it will clamp that packing tight and burn it up.
.. it is what it is ... and that is how it should be!

When I reinstalled the engine cover in my V174 I used normal stainless wood screws which is what was originally used. In the location where the hinges screwed down it is through the half inch marine ply floor and a 1x6 cross frame so there was plenty of wood for them to grab into. I also sealed each screw with some LifeCalk.

Unfortunately I haven't got an answer for you, I know so little about jet pumps but you could be correct about EP90, not exactly sure though.
