I'm glad you like the sound,  I'm anxious to hear them, sometime's I like for mine not to be so loud.  I don't know why really, but the port side always seems to get good water flow berore the starbord side does, and I do know this,  the impeller pushes up more pressure that a garden hose, and if the impeller is failing, as you indicated, there just simply may not be enough pressure to give your motor a sufficient circulation, just changing out that impeller may solve your problem, I think so anyway.

The port that service's the risers have the path of least resistance, it's a constant flow, first, the other ports that service the manifolds have to go through the motor first, and the port side head is closer than the starbord side, the first one to get water, only a small amount of water gets around the thermostat to flow through the logs until the thermostat opens.

Looks great man! Mine is the same way the port side flows water out first. I don't you have to worry about it. As long as decent amount if water flows out both sides your fine. I will be getting my new t-state setup on this weekend. So I will be running it again and will have to see if it does the same as yours. We both have the same setup. The one difference is I just put a new impeller in mine last weekend.  :) If the water level is done at the river I will be talking her out for a shake down run. 8)

Looks great! Hopefully a new impeller solves that issue and puts it to bed.

I have a question and especially since you CV is taller at the transom then many. Were you able to pull your motor with a portable engine hoist or do you have an over head one? My engine hoist will not go high enough to get my motor out. It is about 53" high. Now of course the nose can go up some and I could take the tires off. Setting it on the axel would give me another 5" of so. Just wondering. If I have to have an overhead, then thats another issue, that I dont need.
After looking at the pics closer, yours really isnt all that tall.

Yeah the more I read into it the more this seems pretty normal. I'm gonna replace the impeller to be safe and throw it in the lake as soon as spring decides to comes back...

Craig - hope you can get your rig in the water soon! It's been hard to catch a decent streak of good weather, let alone a solid day of good weather  :'(

And Red - it's still pretty loud  ;D At idle it sounds great...the muffled tips seem to take the edge off of higher RPM's, which is exactly what I wanted.

Ross - we used a portable engine hoist Jeff borrowed from his work. I could've been a bit more specific when describing the process - we couldn't actually lift the engine OUT of the boat, as the hoist wouldn't go that high. Also, we had to take one of the engine covers off, had to approach the boat from the port corner, and rigged the lift so the arm could extend long enough. Needless to say, we had to screw around with it a bit before we could get the hook over the engine. Once we did get the hoist in position, we only lifted the motor up and moved it about 2 feet to the side. From there we had enough room to work. You might be able to do the same, but it sounds like your boat is a bit higher than mine. I can measure the height of the rear for reference if ya like?

Based on my discovery of a cracked block today, it needs to come all the way out.
I'll likely need to invest in an equalizer as well.

There a song about that.....
Yup and the tranny on my truck started slipping moving the 175 in and out of the shop. I'm not even going to ask, what next? Opps, just did.

Ross - I know I'm late to the party, but I'm really sorry to hear about your misfortune  :'( Most of us have been in your situation before and it's never fun. It's always hard to tell if the seller was honestly naive or just a lying pile of crap...hell, the guy I bought my boat from told me the floors and stringers had all been replaced...not a chance. But he seemed "nice" so I figured I could trust his word.

It's a cliche thing to say, but try to make of it. I think Jason mentioned the convenient fact that 350's are some of the cheapest and easiest motors around...I've got a few trustworthy buddies that may have a couple collecting dust, or know of a quality place to source one if you're interested. Keep looking forward buddy...

Sorry not trying to steal your thread, but I contacted a couple of Marine mechanics thru Craigslist that state they have over 30 years experience and their rates are 1/2 what I have seen. I'm looking for someone that will work with  me as I have to save $$. I have a spare 350 as well.
I'll safely say "lieing pile of crap" because they told me they had it out recently and with 2 frost plugs out and cracked block, there is no way. I could tell that oil had not been run thru more the a few minutes.
I am certainly partly to blame for believeing them. Besides, I knew there were some issues and just figured I'd deal with them. This one is a bit larger then I anticipated, at least for what I paid for it. Live and learn. I'll go ramble on my own thread now.

Update -

I put the rear bench back in, tied up all the loose ends and dropped the 23 in Minnetonka on Monday night. It sounds great at idle and better at WOT ;D Idling around, the tips are about 3/4 under water, so it sounds kinda like an old Cris Craft. Better yet - it didn't sink. Jeff, well done.

However, it's not all butterflies and rainbows...so I took a chance and didn't replace the impeller before taking it to the lake. Sure enough, as soon as I throttled down and ran at low RPM's (under 1,000), it would start to warm up, as it previously had on muffs. I shut it off and tried to figure out if anything else (I hadn't checked) besides the impeller could be causing overheating at low rpm's. I dug into my new t-stat and sure enough, I forgot to tighten up the check balls on the brass t-fitting, which allowed water to simply pass through the t-stat housing and dump into the risers. I'm a moron.

I snugged up the check balls to the t-fitting and the overheating problem is no more! I took it out Tuesday and it ran perfect - nice and cool. I'll post some pics of it all back together later tonight...

Now it just needs to stop raining.... :'(

when you say you tightened those check ball nuts up, how tight do you mean? I just have mine at the end of the threads. should they be tightened till i bottom out on the threads?

Bingo - as long as it's dry, I plan on going out Sunday around noon or 1. Hope to see you guys and anyone else that wants to join out there  8)

Craig - I don't know if you have to bottom out on the threads - I just tightened them so there was enough spring tension to hold the check balls snug against the brass t-fitting.

Thanks for the heads up Jim. That kind of bites but what do you do. I've got everything worked out family wise so I'll be going for sure unless the weather decides not to cooperate.
