Working on the 1988 115 HP Merc.
« on: May 24, 2011, 05:45:48 PM »
Mounted the 312 lb. Merc. on the stand with the help of two neighbor men, wenching from a heavy walled pipe between two trusses in the garage. Nice to be able to wheel it in and out of the garage. Top of motor clears garage door by 3 inches. Degreased engine at end of driveway and sprayed down with water. Lower unit is to the welder to fill in 8 holes in the cavitation plate from a hydrofin and to add to the broken off skeg. The existing skeg will be cut horizontially in a zigzag pattern halfway down and the new piece matched and welded in place. The zigzag pattern adds more strength and had less welding warp to it.

Next will be compression test, water impeller inspection, test run on stand, adjustments, fluids, and cleaning up the paint and waxing. Have not made decision on switching yet.

Put your blue band on it and mount it on your V-153 !
You can remove your external trim pump and get more HP !
Do it Dave ... DO IT !

Motor looks great Dave ...

Only thing I would need is a blue decal in the middle section. In my opinion, the 1974 Mercury has better and classier decals and front panel. The front panel of the 1988 is too plastic. Guess that we could say the same things about the old Glastrons in comparision to the new ones, the old ones have more details and class.

Four screw hold the lower wrap ... should be any easy swap.
Changing motors might be a little harder ... LOL
Would you need the newer control box ?

The new motor has a different bolt pattern through the transom. Top bolts 12 7/8" apart on the newer motor and 12 5/8" on the older. Do not know about the comparability of the bottom holes yet. Bummer. Control box would be no problem to switch - just be careful with all the parts in the box as you switch throttle and shift cables. Newer motor has both water pressure gauge and trim angle gauge. Do not want to cut a new hole in the dash for the trim angle gauge. Think that the older gauges look better than the new, and would stay with the older gauges.

Exterior paint of motor and cowl look good, just needs a touchup here and there with small dabs of paint. Will prime and paint the lower unit myself when it comes back from the welder.

I'm certain you'll have it "up to par" before doing anything with it David, nice swap and worth the effort IMHO.  You can always mount  any additional gauges needed under the dash, to prevent drilling new holes..........I'm proud for you buddy!

Lower unit back from welding shop. Skeg fixed and eight holes filled on cavitation plate. Now to sand entire unit, prime and paint.

Touched up small scratches and nicks in more than 100 places with a small artist's paint brush dipped in paint sprayed into the plastic spray cap of Mercury Phanton. Touched up the top, cowl and front panel. One side of the cowl is specked with small white spots which I will have to live with.

Next to touch up the midsection and primer and paint the lower unit.

Don't know Dave ... Kind of like the band and colors of that year ... although the chrome face plate is much better looking.
" One side of the cowl is specked with small white spots which I will have to live with. "
I have the same thing on my motor, over spray from touch ups maybe ?
It only shows on the large decal but don't want to use anything to harsh and melt the decal.

After touch up a coat of wax will knock down the high spot on touched up area and look very nice.
I used a match stick (paper kind from a match book, not the wood kind) as the brush and it worked well.

Keep the pictures coming Dave ...

The one who sold me the Mercury motor paints muscle cars as a living and I suspect it was from the cowl being close to where he was painting. I did have the cowl repainted on the 1974 Mercury because of paint damage (my fault) but it is costly to have it done. My computer wall paper is this picture, and perhaps the condition of this restored Mercury (Note: Not Mine) is my inspiration for the completed project.

Lower unit's skeg's leading edge sharpened, nicks and scratches sanded smooth, leading edge of lower unit sharpened, and all paint roughed up in preparation for primer.

Looks gorgeous David.  Whomever welded your skeg deserves a pat on the back...  first class!

You should be able to swap the entire cowl from your old Merc onto your new one, including the front plate and cover.  That way you can preserve the vintage appearance while benefiting from the additional horsepower, electronic ignition, and integral trim of the new motor.

Yes, the best of both worlds - new technology of the 88' and the classic look (and color blue to match the boat) of the 74'. The double red and silver strip right above the caviation plate on the 88' could be covered with black tape.

I am taking this project one step at a time and have not ruled out a future purchase of a 16' CVX Glastron/Carlson on which to mount this motor. The ideal would be a pristine boat with a blown Mercury motor.

right on David, like what you're doing with your 88, looks great.  I was inspired by the same picture!, and seems we had the same idea with the vintage look, newer motor features.  :)  I would like to find some vintage looking, but newer built, speedometer and tachometer to put in the dash.  Once I get that installed and get the motor fully broken in, it will be time to start experimenting with some different prop options.
