Doug, here's hoping that you beat 54.8 MPH in your new boat. Hello Baja, goodbye BooHoo. I have 3 untested props for the new motor, but would not be surprised if the old reliable 21" 2-blade bronze turning 5,800 RPM is the fastest. Then I have to correct the speed here in Minnesota at 666 feet above sea level to Florida's 0 feet at sea level. LOL.

About 1056' on Lake of the Woods, however that would affect it.

Looks like brand new David! Hopefully the internals are as the previous owner stated.  Sounds like your planning to stick it on your V-153 versus getting another boat for it.

Thank you for all the compliments. It is a fun project. Do not know if it will replace the 1974 115 Merc on the V-153 Glastron soon or not. Been half heartedly looking for an 80's CVX Glastron/Carlson in pristine condition but with a burnt out Merc.

Will give updates on the mechanical condition of the motor when they are known.

Thanks again.

So far is has been all show, no go. Today hooked up the motor to water, battery, controls. and tested on the outboard motor stand. Disconnected the "Auto Blend" which is simple to do and plugged the outlet from the water jacket since am not running a water pressure gauge yet. The motor started right off, little smoke, idles great, and has the same authoritative sound to the exhaust as the 1974. This 1988 motor seems more refined than the 1974. Will probably switch next spring. Figuring out transom support plates (TH Marine), bolts and fasteners(stainless steel fine thread), how to plug the old transom holes, template for the new bolt pattern, and height off transom. Will probably have compression test on both motors next.

" Figuring out transom support plates (TH Marine), "
That should cover the scars from the old Merc thumb screw mounts.

" how to plug the old transom holes "
Wood dowls epoxyed in and covered with silicone, the new motor mounts will cover old holes.

Theres nothing that sound like a Tower of Power at WOT !
Lookin' GOOD Dave ...

Motor did not come with a speedometer, only a tach, water pressure gauge, and a power trim angle indicator. Purchased a speedometer today to match the tach. The electrical connection confiigerations have changed from 1974 to 1988 so the old instruments need to be replaced. The tach rests at 800 RPM so will call the previous owner to see if works. Had the hardest time figuring out how to attach the electrical harness on this motor. Nothing is easy on outboards - or inboards. Plan to raise the horizonal plate about 1" off the bottom of the boat to start out with. Figure the bronze props might loss grip if the motor is mounted higher.

Doug, Mercury makes a 1500XS (makes more than 150 HP) that I could disguise as a 90 HP.

Forgot about your early hole(s) not lining up with the new ones. Bummer. Believe they were all standardized around '76.

Ya as others have said epoxy some dowels in there. Whatever you do promise me you'll make sure your new hole(s) are centered. Do not rely on the origionals as a centering point. Mine were off by almost 11/16".

And before I fergit: Raise the motor a hole, or two ...

Thanks for the information Doug. The top holes are close, but the bottom ones moved out from about 7 7/8 to 9 7/8. Yes, the old holes will be epoxyed several times and a hardwood dowel forced in and cut off and capped with epoxy or silicone. Yes, the centering of the motor is important. I plan to make a template or get a Mercury template from a dealer that can hang on the transom. Will do alot of calculations and measuring before drilling the holes. Yes, will evenually raise the motor up from about 1" to 2" knowing that at that height the surface props - Ballistic, PowerTech, and Chopper will work.

Bet you are anxious to find out what you Baja will do. There are always the finetuning, the adjustments, the different feel of a different model of boat.

Gregg, thanks for the information about your tach sitting at 800 RPM. Mine is probably the same and why buy a new one when the old one works?

What's the difference between the 1500 and 1500XS?  Where can I get those 90 hp decals?
